In this paper, we quantitatively investigate the properties of a statistical ensemble of stock prices. We focus attention on the relative price defined as X(t) = S(t)/S(0), where S(0), is the stock price for an onset time of the bubble. We selected approximately 3200 stocks traded on the Japanese Stock Exchange, and formed a statistical ensemble of daily relative prices for each trading day in the 3-year period from January 4, 1999 to December 28, 2001, corresponding to the period in which internet Bubble formed and crashed in the Japanese stock market. We found that the upper tail of the complementary cumulative distribution function of the ensemble of the relative prices in the high value of the price is well described by a power-law distribution, P(S>x) ∼x , with an exponent that moves over time. Furthermore we found that as the power-law exponents α approached two, the bubble burst. It is reasonable to suppose that it indicates that internet bubble is about to burst.  相似文献

We select the n stocks traded in the New York Stock Exchange and we form a statistical ensemble of daily stock returns for each of the k trading days of our database from the stock price time series. We study the ensemble return distribution for each trading day and we find that the symmetry properties of the ensemble return distribution drastically change in crash and rally days of the market. In crash and rally days, the distribution becomes asymmetric. In particular for crashes the positive tail is steeper than the negative one whereas the reverse is observed in rally days. We analyze the hitting time distributions of stock price returns in different time windows, characterized by different levels of noise present in the market. The study has been performed on two sets of data from US markets. The first one is composed by daily price of 1071 stocks trade for the 12-year period 1987-1998, the second one is composed by high frequency data for 100 stocks for the 4-year period 1995-1998. We compare the probability distribution obtained by our empirical analysis with those obtained from different models for stock market evolution. Specifically by focusing on the statistical properties of the hitting times to reach a barrier or a given threshold, we compare the probability density function (PDF) of three models, namely the geometric Brownian motion, the GARCH model and the Heston model with that obtained from real market data. We will present also some results of a generalized Heston model.  相似文献

The statistical properties of the bid-ask spread of a frequently traded Chinese stock listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange are investigated using the limit-order book data. Three different definitions of spread are considered based on the time right before transactions, the time whenever the highest buying price or the lowest selling price changes, and a fixed time interval. The results are qualitatively similar no matter linear prices or logarithmic prices are used. The average spread exhibits evident intraday patterns consisting of a big L-shape in morning transactions and a small L-shape in the afternoon. The distributions of the spread with different definitions decay as power laws. The tail exponents of spreads at transaction level are well within the interval (2,3) and that of average spreads are well in line with the inverse cubic law for different time intervals. Based on the detrended fluctuation analysis, we found the evidence of long memory in the bid-ask spread time series for all three definitions, even after the removal of the intraday pattern. Using the classical box-counting approach for multifractal analysis, we show that the time series of bid-ask spread do not possess multifractal nature.  相似文献

In financial market risk measurement, Value-at-Risk (VaR) techniques have proven to be a very useful and popular tool. Unfortunately, most VaR estimation models suffer from major drawbacks: the lognormal (Gaussian) modeling of the returns does not take into account the observed fat tail distribution and the non-stationarity of the financial instruments severely limits the efficiency of the VaR predictions. In this paper, we present a new approach to VaR estimation which is based on ideas from the field of information theory and lossless data compression. More specifically, the technique of context modeling is applied to estimate the VaR by conditioning the probability density function on the present context. Tree-structured vector quantization is applied to partition the multi-dimensional state space of both macroeconomic and microeconomic priors into an increasing but limited number of context classes. Each class can be interpreted as a state of aggregation with its own statistical and dynamic behavior, or as a random walk with its own drift and step size. Results on the US S&P500 index, obtained using several evaluation methods, show the strong potential of this approach and prove that it can be applied successfully for, amongst other useful applications, VaR and volatility prediction. We have investigated the tail distribution of the daily fluctuations in 202 different indices in the stock markets of 59 countries for the time span of the last 20 years. Power law, log-normal, Weibull, exponential and power law with exponential cutoff distributions are considered as possible candidates for the tail distribution of the normalized returns. It is found that the power exponent depends strongly on the choice of the tail threshold and a sizeable number of indices can be better fitted by a distribution function other than the power law at the region that has power law exponent of 3. Also, we have found that the power exponent is not an indicator of the maturity of the market.  相似文献

The statistical properties of the Hang Seng index in the Hong Kong stock market are analyzed. The data include minute by minute records of the Hang Seng index from January 3, 1994 to May 28, 1997. The probability distribution functions of index returns for the time scales from 1 minute to 128 minutes are given. The results show that the nature of the stochastic process underlying the time series of the returns of Hang Seng index cannot be described by the normal distribution. It is more reasonable to model it by a truncated Lévy distribution with an exponential fall-off in its tails. The scaling of the maximium value of the probability distribution is studied. Results show that the data are consistent with scaling of a Lévy distribution. It is observed that in the tail of the distribution, the fall-off deviates from that of a Lévy stable process and is approximately exponential, especially after removing daily trading pattern from the data. The daily pattern thus affects strongly the analysis of the asymptotic behavior and scaling of fluctuation distributions. Received 9 August 2000 and Received in final form 28 August 2000  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the Tehran stock exchange (TSE) and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) in terms of perturbed correlation matrices. To perturb a stock market, there are two methods, namely local and global perturbation. In the local method, we replace a correlation coefficient of the cross-correlation matrix with one calculated from two Gaussian-distributed time series, whereas in the global method, we reconstruct the correlation matrix after replacing the original return series with Gaussian-distributed time series. The local perturbation is just a technical study. We analyze these markets through two statistical approaches, random matrix theory (RMT) and the correlation coefficient distribution. By using RMT, we find that the largest eigenvalue is an influence that is common to all stocks and this eigenvalue has a peak during financial shocks. We find there are a few correlated stocks that make the essential robustness of the stock market but we see that by replacing these return time series with Gaussian-distributed time series, the mean values of correlation coefficients, the largest eigenvalues of the stock markets and the fraction of eigenvalues that deviate from the RMT prediction fall sharply in both markets. By comparing these two markets, we can see that the DJIA is more sensitive to global perturbations. These findings are crucial for risk management and portfolio selection.  相似文献

In many practical important cases, a massive dataset can be represented as a very large network with certain attributes associated with its vertices and edges. Stock markets generate huge amounts of data, which can be use for constructing the network reflecting the market’s behavior. In this paper, we use a threshold method to construct China’s stock correlation network and then study the network’s structural properties and topological stability. We conduct a statistical analysis of this network and show that it follows a power-law model. We also detect components, cliques and independent sets in this network. These analyses allows one to apply a new data mining technique of classifying financial instruments based on stock price data, which provides a deeper insight into the internal structure of the stock market. Moreover, we test the topological stability of this network and find that it displays a topological robustness against random vertex failures, but it is also fragile to intentional attacks. Such a network stability property would be also useful for portfolio investment and risk management.  相似文献

We examine the volatility of an Indian stock market in terms of correlation of stocks and quantify the volatility using the random matrix approach. First we discuss trends observed in the pattern of stock prices in the Bombay Stock Exchange for the three-year period 2000–2002. Random matrix analysis is then applied to study the relationship between the coupling of stocks and volatility. The study uses daily returns of 70 stocks for successive time windows of length 85 days for the year 2001. We compare the properties of matrix C of correlations between price fluctuations in time regimes characterized by different volatilities. Our analyses reveal that (i) the largest (deviating) eigenvalue of C correlates highly with the volatility of the index, (ii) there is a shift in the distribution of the components of the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue across regimes of different volatilities, (iii) the inverse participation ratio for this eigenvector anti-correlates significantly with the market fluctuations and finally, (iv) this eigenvector of C can be used to set up a Correlation Index, CI whose temporal evolution is significantly correlated with the volatility of the overall market index.  相似文献

We show that the current economic crisis has led the market to exhibit a non-critical behavior. We do so by analyzing the quantitative parameters of time series from the main assets of the Brazilian Stock Market BOVESPA. By monitoring global persistence we show a deviation of power law behavior during the crisis in a strong analogy with spin systems (from where this concept was originally conceived). Such behavior is corroborated by an emergent heavy tail of absolute return distribution and also by the magnitude autocorrelation exponent. Comparisons with universal exponents obtained in the international stock markets are also performed. This suggests how a thorough analysis of suitable exponents can bring a possible way of forecasting market crises characterized by non-criticality.  相似文献

We investigate scaling and memory effects in return intervals between price volatilities above a certain threshold q for the Japanese stock market using daily and intraday data sets. We find that the distribution of return intervals can be approximated by a scaling function that depends only on the ratio between the return interval τ and its mean 〈τ〉. We also find memory effects such that a large (or small) return interval follows a large (or small) interval by investigating the conditional distribution and mean return interval. The results are similar to previous studies of other markets and indicate that similar statistical features appear in different financial markets. We also compare our results between the period before and after the big crash at the end of 1989. We find that scaling and memory effects of the return intervals show similar features although the statistical properties of the returns are different.  相似文献

We study here numerically the behavior of an ideal gas like model of markets having only one non-consumable commodity. We investigate the behavior of the steady-state distributions of money, commodity and total wealth, as the dynamics of trading or exchange of money and commodity proceeds, with local (in time) fluctuations in the price of the commodity. These distributions are studied in markets with agents having uniform and random saving factors. The self-organizing features in money distribution are similar to the cases without any commodity (or with consumable commodities), while the commodity distribution shows an exponential decay. The wealth distribution shows interesting behavior: gamma like distribution for uniform saving propensity and has the same power-law tail, as that of the money distribution, for a market with agents having random saving propensity.  相似文献

Stock markets in the world are linked by complicated and dynamical relationships into a temporal network.Extensive works have provided us with rich findings from the topological properties and their evolutionary trajectories, but the underlying dynamical mechanism is still not in order. In the present work,we proposed a technical scheme to reveal the dynamical law from the temporal network. The index records for the global stock markets form a multivariate time series. One separates the series into segments and calculates the information flows between the markets, resulting in a temporal market network representing the state and its evolution. Then the technique of the Koopman decomposition operator is adopted to find the law stored in the information flows. The results show that the stock market system has a high flexibility,i.e.,it jumps easily between different states. The information flows mainly from high to low volatility stock markets. And the dynamical process of information flow is composed of many dynamic modes distribute homogenously in a wide range of periods from one month to several ten years, but there exist only nine modes dominating the macroscopic patterns.  相似文献

Recent studies in the econophysics literature reveal that price variability has fractal and multifractal characteristics not only in developed financial markets, but also in emerging markets. Taking high-frequency intraday quotes of the Shanghai Stock Exchange Component (SSEC) Index as example, this paper proposes a new method to measure daily Value-at-Risk (VaR) by combining the newly introduced multifractal volatility (MFV) model and the extreme value theory (EVT) method. Two VaR backtesting techniques are then employed to compare the performance of the model with that of a group of linear and nonlinear generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models. The empirical results show the multifractal nature of price volatility in Chinese stock market. VaR measures based on the multifractal volatility model and EVT method outperform many GARCH-type models at high-risk levels.  相似文献

We propose a model of fractal point process driven by the nonlinear stochastic differential equation. The model is adjusted to the empirical data of trading activity in financial markets. This reproduces the probability distribution function and power spectral density of trading activity observed in the stock markets. We present a simple stochastic relation between the trading activity and return, which enables us to reproduce long-range memory statistical properties of volatility by numerical calculations based on the proposed fractal point process.  相似文献

We present empirical examination and reassessment of the functional role of the market Index, using datasets of stock returns for eight years, by analyzing and comparing the results for two very different markets: 1) the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), representing a large, mature market, and 2) the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE), representing a small, young market. Our method includes special collective (holographic) analysis of stock-Index correlations, of nested stock correlations (including the Index as an additional ghost stock) and of bare stock correlations (after subtraction of the Index return from the stocks returns). Our findings verify and strongly substantiate the assumed functional role of the index in the financial system as a cohesive force between stocks, i.e., the correlations between stocks are largely due to the strong correlation between each stock and the Index (the adhesive effect), rather than inter-stock dependencies. The Index adhesive and cohesive effects on the market correlations in the two markets are presented and compared in a reduced 3-D principal component space of the correlation matrices (holographic presentation). The results provide new insights into the interplay between an index and its constituent stocks in TASE-like versus NYSE-like markets.  相似文献

On the probability distribution of stock returns in the Mike-Farmer model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recently, Mike and Farmer have constructed a very powerful and realistic behavioral model to mimick the dynamic process of stock price formation based on the empirical regularities of order placement and cancelation in a purely order-driven market, which can successfully reproduce the whole distribution of returns, not only the well-known power-law tails, together with several other important stylized facts. There are three key ingredients in the Mike-Farmer (MF) model: the long memory of order signs characterized by the Hurst index Hs, the distribution of relative order prices x in reference to the same best price described by a Student distribution (or Tsallis’ q-Gaussian), and the dynamics of order cancelation. They showed that different values of the Hurst index Hs and the freedom degree αx of the Student distribution can always produce power-law tails in the return distribution fr(r) with different tail exponent αr. In this paper, we study the origin of the power-law tails of the return distribution fr(r) in the MF model, based on extensive simulations with different combinations of the left part L(x) for x < 0 and the right part R(x) for x > 0 of fx(x). We find that power-law tails appear only when L(x) has a power-law tail, no matter R(x) has a power-law tail or not. In addition, we find that the distributions of returns in the MF model at different timescales can be well modeled by the Student distributions, whose tail exponents are close to the well-known cubic law and increase with the timescale.  相似文献

We have analyzed the statistical probabilities of limit-order book (LOB) shape through building the book using the ultra-high-frequency data from 23 liquid stocks traded on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2003. We find that the averaged LOB shape has a maximum away from the same best price for both buy and sell sides of the LOB. The LOB shape function has nice exponential form in the right tail. The buy side of the LOB is found to be abnormally thicker for the price levels close to the same best although there are much more sell orders on the book. We also find that the LOB shape functions for both buy and sell sides have periodic peaks with a period of five. The 1-min averaged volumes at fixed tick level follow log-normal distributions except for the left tails which display power-law behaviors, exhibit abnormal intraday patterns with increasing trend, and possess long memory that cannot be explained by the intraday patterns. Academic implications of our empirical results are also briefly discussed.  相似文献
