Benzimidazole‐branched bi‐anchoring organic dyes that contained triphenylamine/phenothiazine donors, 2‐cyanoacrylic acid acceptors, and various π linkers were synthesized and examined as sensitizers for dye‐sensitized solar cells. The structure–activity relationships in these dyes were systematically investigated by using absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. The wavelength of the absorption peak was more‐heavily influenced by the nature of the π linker than by the nature of the donor. For a given donor, the absorption maximum (λmax) was red‐shifted on changing the π linker from phenyl to 2,2′‐bithiophene, whilst the dyes that contained triphenylamine units displayed higher molar extinction coefficients (?) than their analogous phenothiazine‐based triphenylamine dyes, which led to good light‐harvesting properties in the triphenylamine‐based dyes. Electrochemical data for the dyes indicated that the triphenylamine‐based dyes possessed relatively low‐lying HOMOs, which could be beneficial for suppressing back electron transfer from the conduction band of TiO2 to the oxidized dyes, owing to facile regeneration of the oxidized dye by the electrolyte. The best performance in the DSSCs was observed for a dye that possessed a triphenylamine donor and 2,2′‐bithiophene π linkers. Electron impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the use of triphenylamine as the donor and phenyl or 2,2′‐bithiophene as the π linkers was beneficial for disrupting the dark current and charge‐recombination kinetics, which led to a long electron lifetime of the injected electrons in the conduction band of TiO2.  相似文献

Dipolar metal‐free sensitizers (D‐π‐A; D=donor, π=conjugated bridge, A=acceptor) consisting of a dithiafulvalene (DTF) unit as the electron donor, a benzene, thiophene, or fluorene moiety as the conjugated spacer, and 2‐cyanoacrylic acid as the electron acceptor have been synthesized. Dimeric congeners of these dyes, (D‐π‐A)2, were also synthesized through iodine‐induced dimerization of an appropriate DTF‐containing segment. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with the new dyes as the sensitizers have cell efficiencies that range from 2.11 to 5.24 %. In addition to better light harvesting, more effective suppression of the dark current than the D‐π‐A dyes is possible with the (D‐π‐A)2 dyes.  相似文献

We report here the synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical properties of a series of easily prepared dipolar organic dyes and their application in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For the six organic dyes, the molecular structures comprised a triphenylamine group as an electron donor, a cyanoacrylic acid as an electron acceptor, and an electron‐deficient diphenylquinoxaline moiety integrated in the π‐conjugated spacer between the electron donor and acceptor moieties. The incorporation of the electron‐deficient diphenylquinoxaline moiety effectively reduces the energy gap of the dyes and broadly extends the spectral coverage. DSSCs based on dye 6 produced the best overall cell performance of 7.35 %, which translates to approximately 79 % of the intrinsic efficiency of the DSSCs based on the standard N719 dye under identical experimental conditions. The high performance of DSSCs based on dye 6 among the six dyes explored is attributed to the combined effects of high dye loading on a TiO2 surface, rapid dye regeneration, and effective retardation of charge recombination.  相似文献

Organic dyes that contain a 2,7‐diaminofluorene‐based donor, a cyanoacrylic‐acid acceptor, and various aromatic conjugation segments, which are composed of benzene, fluorene, carbazole, and thiophene units, as a π‐bridge have been synthesized and characterized by optical, electrochemical, and theoretical investigations. The trends in the absorption and electrochemical properties of these dyes are in accordance with the electron‐donating ability of the conjugating segment. Consequently, the dyes that contained a 2,7‐carbazole unit in the π‐spacer exhibited red‐shifted absorption and lower oxidation potentials than their corresponding fluorene‐ and phenylene‐bridged dyes. However, the enhanced power‐conversion efficiency that was exhibited by the fluorene‐bridged dyes in the DSSCs was attributed to their broader and intense absorption. Despite the longer‐wavelength absorption and reasonable optical density, carbazole‐bridged dyes exhibited lower power‐conversion efficiencies, which were ascribed to the poor alignment of the LUMO level in these dyes, thereby leading to the inhibition of electron injection into the TiO2 conduction band.  相似文献

A series of metal‐free organic donor–π bridge–acceptor dyes are studied computationally using density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent DFT (TDDFT) approaches to explore their potential performances in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Taking triphenylamine (TPA) and cyanoacrylic acid moieties as donor and acceptor units, respectively, the effects of different substituents of the π linkers in the TPA‐based dyes on the energy conversion efficiency of the DSSCs are theoretically evaluated through optimized geometries, charge distributions, electronic structures, simulated absorption spectra, and free energies of injection. The results show that the molecular orbital energy levels and electron‐injection driving forces of the TPA dyes can be tuned by the introduction of substituents with different electron‐withdrawing or ‐donating abilities. The electron‐withdrawing substituent always lowers the energies of both frontier orbitals, while the electron‐donating one heightens them simultaneously. The efficiency trend of these TPA derivatives as sensitizers in DSSCs is also predicted by analyzing the light‐harvesting efficiencies and the free energies of injection. The following substituents are shown to increase the efficiency of the dye: OMe, OEt, OHe, and OH.  相似文献

Four novel donor ? π‐bridge ? acceptor (D ? π ? A) polymeric metal complexes (P1–P4) based on 8‐hydroxyquinoline metal complexes were synthesized and tested for their performance in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The polymeric metal complexes dyes use alkoxy benzene or alkyl fluorene as the electron donor and C=C as π linker; the 8‐hydroxyquinoline derivative complex part was used as the electron acceptor and diaminomaleonitrile was used as ancillary ligand. The two strongly electron‐withdrawing cyano groups in the polymer structure can provide an efficient charge transport in the intramolecular between donor and acceptor parts. The thermal, photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of these copolymers were investigated by TGA, differential scanning calorimetry, cyclic voltammetry and cureent density‐voltage curves, and the results showed that dye containing complex Zn(II) and alkoxy benzene unit benefited the generation of photocurrent and open‐circuit voltages, and a maximum power conversion efficiency of 1.91% (P2) was obtained, with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.71 V, a short‐circuit current density of 4.23 mA cm?2, and a fill factor of 38.6% under AM1.5G irradiation. The study results also show that the four polymers exhibit good thermal stability, indicating that these polymeric metal complexes are suitable for the fabrication processes of optoelectronic devices. Two donor–acceptor molecular tweezers incorporating the 10‐(1,3‐dithiol‐2‐ylidene)anthracene unit as donor group and two cyanoacrylic units as accepting/anchoring groups are reported as metal‐free sensitizers for dye‐sensitized solar cells. By changing the phenyl spacer with 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) units, the absorption spectrum of the sensitizer is red‐shifted with a corresponding increase in the molar absorptivity. Density functional calculations confirmed the intramolecular charge‐transfer nature of the lowest‐energy absorption bands. The new dyes are highly distorted from planarity and are bound to the TiO2 surface through the two anchoring groups in a unidentate binding form. A power‐conversion efficiency of 3.7 % was obtained with a volatile CH3CN‐based electrolyte, under air mass 1.5 global sunlight. Photovoltage decay transients and ATR‐FTIR measurements allowed us to understand the photovoltaic performance, as well as the surface binding, of these new sensitizers.  相似文献

The high performances of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on seven new dyes are disclosed. Herein, the synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical properties of a series of intentionally designed dipolar organic dyes and their application in DSSCs are reported. The molecular structures of the seven organic dyes are composed of a triphenylamine group as an electron donor, a cyanoacrylic acid as an electron acceptor, and an electron‐deficient diphenylquinoxaline moiety integrated in the π‐conjugated spacer between the electron donor and acceptor moieties. The DSSCs based on the dye DJ104 gave the best overall cell performance of 8.06 %; the efficiency of the DSSC based on the standard N719 dye under the same experimental conditions was 8.82 %. The spectral coverage of incident photon‐to‐electron conversion efficiencies extends to the onset at the near‐infrared region due to strong internal charge‐transfer transition as well as the effect of electron‐deficient diphenylquinoxaline to lower the energy gap in these organic dyes. A combined tetraphenyl segment as a hydrophobic barrier in these organic dyes effectively slows down the charge recombination from TiO2 to the electrolyte and boosts the photovoltage, comparable to their RuII counterparts. Detailed spectroscopic studies have revealed the dye structure–cell performance correlations, to allow future design of efficient light‐harvesting organic dyes.  相似文献

The ring‐fused thiophene derivatives benzo[c]thiophene and its precursor bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene (BCOD) have been introduced as π‐conjugated spacers for organic push–pull sensitizers with dihexyloxy‐substituted triphenylamine as donor and cyanoacrylic acid as acceptor ( OL1 , OL2 , OL3 , OL4 , OL5 , OL6 ). The effects of the fused ring on the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of these sensitizers and their photovoltaic performance in dye‐sensitized solar cells have been evaluated. Introduction of a binary benzo[c]thiophene and ethylenedioxy thiophene as π bridge caused a significant red shift of the characteristic intramolecular charge‐transfer band to 642 nm. It is found that the sensitizer OL3 , which contains one benzo[c]thiophene unit as π linker, gives the highest overall conversion efficiency of 5.03 % among all these dyes.  相似文献

Two D–π‐A′–A regioisomers (A‐IDT‐D and D‐IDT‐A) featuring 4,4′‐di‐p‐tolyl‐4 H‐indeno[1,2‐b]‐thiophene as a π linker (π) between the diarylamino donor (D) and the pyrimidine–cyanoacrylic acid acceptor (A′–A) have been successfully synthesized and characterized as efficient sensitizers for the dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The different arrangements of the D and A′–A blocks on the unsymmetrical indenothiophene (IDT) core render the dipole of IDT being along (A‐IDT‐D) or opposite (D‐IDT‐A) to the direction of intramolecular (donor‐to‐acceptor) charge transfer, and thus induce variations in the physical properties. The experimental observations correlated well with the theoretical analyses, clearly revealing the trade‐off between the molar extinction coefficient (ε) and the S0→S1 transition energy. As a result, a superior ε value was observed for D‐IDT‐A, whereas a bathochromic shift in the absorption occurred in A‐IDT‐D. The larger ε value of D‐IDT‐A together with its more favorable energy level relative to TiO2 led to a higher power conversion efficiency of 7.41 % for the D‐IDT‐A‐based DSSC, retaining approximately 95 % of the N719‐based DSSC efficiency. This work manifests the clear structure–property relationship for the case of donor and acceptor components being connected by an unsymmetrical π linker and provides insights for molecular engineering of organic sensitizers.  相似文献

A series of organic dyes were prepared that displayed remarkable solar‐to‐energy conversion efficiencies in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes are composed of a 4‐tert‐butylphenylamine donor group (D), a cyanoacrylic‐acid acceptor group (A), and a phenylene‐thiophene‐phenylene (PSP) spacer group, forming a D‐π‐A system. A dye containing a bulky tert‐butylphenylene‐substituted carbazole (CB) donor group showed the highest performance, with an overall conversion efficiency of 6.70 %. The performance of the device was correlated to the structural features of the donor groups; that is, the presence of a tert‐butyl group can not only enhance the electron‐donating ability of the donor, but can also suppress intermolecular aggregation. A typical device made with the CB‐PSP dye afforded a maximum photon‐to‐current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 80 % in the region 400–480 nm, a short‐circuit photocurrent density Jsc=14.63 mA cm?2, an open‐circuit photovoltage Voc=0.685 V, and a fill factor FF=0.67. When chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) was used as a co‐absorbent, the open‐circuit voltage of CB‐PSP was elevated significantly, yet the overall performance decreased by 16–18 %. This result indicated that the presence of 4‐tert‐butylphenyl substituents can effectively inhibit self‐aggregation, even without CDCA.  相似文献

A series of donor–π–acceptor‐type organic dyes based on 1‐alkyl‐1H‐imidazole spacers 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 have been developed and characterized. The two electron donors are at positions 4 and 5 of the imidazole, while the electron‐accepting cyanoacrylic acid is incorporated at position 2 by a spacer‐containing heteroaromatic rings, such as thiophene and thiazole. Detailed investigation on the relationship between the structure, spectral and electrochemical properties, and performance of DSSC is described here. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using dyes as the sensitizers exhibit good efficiencies, ranging from 3.06 to 6.35 %, which reached 42–87 % with respect to that of N719‐based device (7.33 %) fabricated and measured under similar conditions. Time‐dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations have been performed on the dyes, and the results show that both electron donors can contribute to electron injection upon photo‐excitation, either directly or indirectly by internal conversion to the lowest excited state.  相似文献

We report DFT studies on some perylene‐based dyes for their electron transfer properties in solar cell applications. The study involves modeling of different donor‐π‐acceptor type sensitizers, with perylene as the donor, furan/pyrrole/thiophene as the π‐bridge and cyanoacrylic group as the acceptor. The effect of different π‐bridges and various substituents on the perylene donor was evaluated in terms of opto‐electronic and photovoltaic parameters such as HOMO‐LUMO energy gap, λmax, light harvesting efficiency(LHE), electron injection efficiency (Øinject), excited state dye potential (Edye*), reorganization energy(λ), and free energy of dye regeneration (). The effect of various substituents on the dye–I2 interaction and hence recombination process was also evaluated. We found that the furan‐based dimethylamine derivative exhibits a better balance of the various optical and photovoltaic properties. Finally, we evaluated the overall opto‐electronic and transport parameters of the TiO2‐dye assembly after anchoring the dyes on the model TiO2 cluster assembly.  相似文献

A series of metal‐free organic dyes with electron‐rich (D) and electron‐deficient units (A) as π linkers have been studied theoretically by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent DFT calculations to explore the effects of π spacers on the optical and electronic properties of triphenylamine dyes. The results show that Dye 1 with a structure of D‐A‐A‐A is superior to the typical C218 dye in various key aspects, including the maximum absorption (λmax=511 nm), the charge‐transfer characteristics (Dq/t is 5.49 Å/0.818 e?/4.41 Å), the driving force for charge‐carrier injection (ΔGinject=1.35 eV)/dye regeneration (ΔGregen=0.27 eV), and the lifetime of the first excited state (τ=3.1 ns). It is thus proposed to be a promising candidate in dye‐sensitized solar cell applications.  相似文献

A series of new nonlinear optical chromophores ( 1 – 15 ) that were comprised of ferrocene‐donor and 4,5‐dicyanoimidazole‐acceptor moieties and various π linkers of different length were synthesized. Support for the presence of significant D ? A interactions in these NLO‐phores was obtained from the evaluation of the quinoid character of the 1,4‐phenylene moieties and their electronic absorption spectra, which featured intense high‐energy (HE) bands that were accompanied by less‐intense low‐energy (LE) bands. The redox behavior of these compounds was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and by rotating‐disc voltammetry (RDV); their electrochemical gaps decreased steadily from 2.64 to 2.09 V. In addition to the experimentally obtained data, DFT calculations of their absorption spectra, HOMO/LUMO levels, and second‐order polarizabilities (β) (?2ω,ω,ω) were performed. A structure–property relationship study that was performed by systematically altering the π linker revealed that the intramolecular charge‐transfer and nonlinear optical properties of these inorganic–organic hybrid D? π? A systems ( 1 – 15 ) were primarily affected by: 1) The presence of olefinic/acetylenic subunits; 2) the length of the π linker; and 3) the spatial arrangement (planarity) of the π linker.  相似文献

Novel supramolecular side‐chain polymers were constructed by complexation of proton acceptor (H‐acceptor) polymers, i.e., side‐chain conjugated polymers P1–P2 containing pyridyl pendants, with low‐band‐gap proton donor (H‐donor) dyes S1–S4 (bearing terminal cyanoacrylic acids) in a proper molar ratio. Besides unique mesomorphic properties confirmed by DSC and XRD results, the H‐bonds of supramolecular side‐chain structures formed by pyridyl H‐acceptors and cyanoacrylic acid H‐donors were also confirmed by FTIR measurements. H‐donor dyes S1–S4 in solid films exhibited broad absorption peaks located in the range of 471–490 nm with optical band‐gaps of 1.99–2.14 eV. Furthermore, H‐bonded polymer complexes P1/S1–P1/S4 and P2/S1–P2/S4 exhibited broad absorption peaks in the range of 440–462 nm with optical band‐gaps of 2.11–2.25 eV. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, the bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell (PSC) devices containing an active layer of H‐bonded polymer complexes P1/S1–P1/S4 and P2/S1–P2/S4 (as electron donors) mixed with [6,6]‐phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (i.e., PCBM, as an electron acceptor) in the weight ratio of 1:1 were investigated. The PSC device containing H‐bonded polymer complex P1/S3 mixed with PCBM (1:1 w/w) gave the best preliminary result with an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.50%, a short‐circuit current of 3.17 mA/cm2, an open‐circuit voltage of 0.47 V, and a fill factor of 34%. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel class of β‐functionalized push–pull zinc opp ‐dibenzoporphyrins were designed, synthesized, and utilized as sensitizers for dye‐sensitized solar cells. Spectral, electrochemical, and computational studies were systematically performed to evaluate their spectral coverage, redox behavior, and electronic structures. These porphyrins displayed much broader spectral coverage and more facile oxidation upon extension of the π conjugation. Free‐energy calculations and femtosecond transient absorption studies (charge injection rate in the range of 1011 s−1) suggested efficient charge injection from the excited singlet state of the porphyrin to the conduction band of TiO2. The power conversion efficiency (η ) of YH3 bearing acrylic acid linkers (η =5.9 %) was close to that of the best ruthenium dye N719 (η =7.4 %) under similar conditions. The superior photovoltaic performance of YH3 was attributed to its higher light‐harvesting ability and more favorable electron injection and collection, as supported by electrochemical impedance spectral studies. This work demonstrates the exceptional potential of benzoporphyrins as sensitizers for dye‐sensitized solar cells.  相似文献

This work identifies the dithiafulvenyl unit as an excellent electron donor for constructing D-π-A-type metal-free organic sensitizers of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Synthesized and tested are three sensitizers all with this donor and a cyanoacrylic acid acceptor but differing in the phenyl (DTF-C1), biphenyl (DTF-C2), and phenyl-thiopheneyl-phenyl π-bridges (DTF-C3). Devices based on these dyes exhibit a dramatically improved performance with the increasing π-bridge length, culminating with DTF-C3 in η = 8.29% under standard global AM 1.5 illumination.  相似文献

Desirable components for dye‐sensitzed solar cell (DSC) sensitizers and fluorescent imaging dyes include strong donating building blocks coupled with well‐balanced acceptor functionalities for absorption beyond the visible range. We have evaluated the effects of increasing acceptor strengths and incorporation of dye morphology controlling groups on molar absorptivity and absorption breadth with indolizine donor‐based dyes. Indolizine‐based D –A and D –π–A sensitizers incorporating bis‐rhodanine, tricyanofuran (TCF), and cyanoacrylic acid functionalities were analyzed for performance in DSC devices. The TCF derivatives were also evaluated as near‐infrared (NIR)‐emissive materials with the AH25 emissions extending past 1000 nm.  相似文献

Considering different solar dyes configuration, four novel metal‐free organic dyes based on phenoxazine as electron donor, thiophene and cyanovinylene linkers as the ‐conjugation bridge and cyanoacrylic acid as electron acceptor were designed to optimize open circuit voltage and short circuit current parameters and theoretically inspected. Density functional theory and time‐dependent density functional theory calculations were used to study frontier molecular orbital energy states of the dyes and their optical absorption spectra. The results indicated that D2‐4 dyes can be suitable candidates as sensitizers for application in dye sensitized solar cells and among these three dyes, D3 showed a broader and more bathochromically shifted absorption band compared to the others. The dye also showed the highest molar extinction coefficient. This work suggests optimizing the configuration of metal‐free organic dyes based on simple D‐ ‐A configuration containing alkyl chain as substitution, starburst conformation, and symmetric double D‐ ‐A chains would produce good photovoltaic properties.  相似文献
