The influence of surfactants (anionic and cationic) on the reactivity of the redox couple cerium(IV) and D-glucose was examined spectrophotometerically. Various kinetic parameters have been determined in the absence and presence of surfactants. The kinetics were followed by monitoring the disappearance of the absorbance of cerium(IV) at 385 nm. The reaction obeyed first-order kinetics with respect to [D-glucose] in both media. No effect of anionic micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was observed due to electrostatic repulsion between the negative head group of SDS and reactive species of cerium(IV) (Ce(SO4) 3 2− ). A twofold increase in the oxidation rate was observed in the presence of cationic micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The observed catalytic role has been analyzed in terms of the Menger–Portnoy model. The effects of various inorganic salts (Na2SO4, NaNO3 and NaCl) were also studied in micellar media.  相似文献

The oxidative degradation of d-xylose by cerium(IV) has been found to be slow in acidic aqueous solution with the evidence of autocatalysis. The reaction is accelerated in the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micellar medium but sodium dodecyl sulfate (an anionic surfactant) has no effect. The pseudo first-order rate constants have been determined at different [reductant], [oxidant], [H2SO4], temperature, and [CTAB]. The reaction rate increased with increasing [d-xylose] and decreased with increase in [H2SO4]. The CTAB-micelle-catalyzed kinetic results can be interpreted by the pseudophase model. The kinetic parameters such as association constant (K s), micellar medium rate constant (k m), and activation parameters (E a, ΔH # and ΔS #) are evaluated and the reaction mechanism is proposed. The reaction rate is inhibited by electrolytes and the results provide an evidence for the exclusion of the reactive species from the reaction site.  相似文献

Kinetics of the oxidation of D ‐fructose by cerium(IV) has been investigated both in the absence and presence of surfactants (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) in sulfuric acid medium. The reaction exhibits first‐order kinetics each in [cerium(IV)] and [D ‐fructose] and inverse first order in [H2SO4]. The Arrhenius equation is found to be valid for the reaction between 30–50°C. A detailed mechanism with the associated reaction kinetics is presented and discussed. While SDS has no effect, CTAB increases the reaction rate with the same kinetic behavior in its presence. The catalytic role of CTAB micelles is discussed in terms of the pseudophase model proposed by Menger and Portnoy. The association constant Ks that equals to 286 mol?1 dm3 is found for the association of cerium(IV) with the positive head group of CTAB micelles. The effect of inorganic electrolytes (Na2SO4, NaNO3, NaCl) has also been studied and discussed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 38: 18–25, 2006  相似文献

The oxidative behavior of d-dextrose toward diperiodatoargentate(III) (DPA) has been studied in the absence and presence of anionic and cationic micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), respectively. The kinetics is based on the reduction of silver(III) to silver(I) by d-dextrose under pseudo-first-order conditions. The monoperiodatoargentate(III) ions act as active oxidants in comparison to that of DPA. The reactions are first- and fractional-order dependence with respect to [DPA] and [d-dextrose], respectively. The reaction rates decrease with [H+] and [periodate]. The premicellar environment of SDS and CTAB strongly inhibits the reaction rate. Inhibition is due to favorable thermodynamic/electrostatic binding between the Ag(III) complex and CTAB monomer aggregates. A suitable mechanism involving a one-electron transfer (rate-determining step) from d-dextrose to the silver(III) species has been proposed. Activation parameters have been evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

The kinetics of the o-toluidine–d-glucose reaction has been studied as a function of [o-toluidine], [d-glucose], [acetic acid], and temperature by UV–visible spectrophotometry at 630 nm in the absence and presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The reaction follows second-order kinetics, being unity in each of the reactants in both media. The effect of added surfactants has also been investigated. The model of micellar catalysis, such as the Menger–Portony model modified by Bunton, is applied to explain the catalytic role of CTAB and SDS micelles. The association/incorporation constants (K s and K n), the rate constant in micellar media (k m), and the activation parameters of this system have been calculated and discussed. The value of the rate constant is found to be higher in SDS than in CTAB. Hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions are responsible for higher reaction rates in SDS. From all observed facts, a reaction mechanism involving a nucleophilic addition–elimination path has been suggested.  相似文献

Kinetics of D-mannose oxidation by cerium (IV) was studied in a sulfuric acid medium at 40°C both in absence and presence of ionic micelles. In both cases, the rate of the reaction was first-order in D-mannose and cerium (IV), which decreased with increasing [H2SO4]. This suggested that the redox reaction followed the same mechanism. The reaction proceeded through formation of an intermediate complex, which was proved by kinetic method. The complex underwent slow unimolecular decomposition to a free radical that reacted with cerium (IV) to afford the product. The catalytic role of cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles was best explained by the Menger-Portnoy model. The study of the effect of CTAB also indicated that a negatively charged species was the reactive form of cerium (IV). From the kinetic data, micelle-cerium (IV) binding and rate constants in micellar medium were evaluated. The anionic micelle of sodium dodecyl sulfate plays no catalytic role. The oxidation has the rate expression: -d[Ce(IV)]=k1Kc1[D-mannose][Ce(IV)]dt Different activation parameters for micelle catalyzed and uncatalyzed paths were also calculated and discussed.  相似文献

Kinetics of Br anion oxidation by cerium(IV) species in aqueous H2SO4 solutions have been reexamined. The rate of reaction was determined spectrophotometrically based on a factor analysis of the absorbance – time data collected in the wavelength range 318–390 nm – the region characteristic for the cerium(IV) sulphato complexes. The data fit very well to a pseudo-first order dependence under a large molar excess of the reductant. The rate law of the form –d[CeIV]/dt = k[CeIV][Br]2 has been obtained at constant H2SO4 concentration and ionic strength I = 2 m. The pseudo-first order rate constant decreases with an [H2SO4] increase from 0.1 to ca. 0.4 m range, then increases for higher [H2SO4]. The apparent activation parameters have been calculated from the third order rate constants k for different [H2SO4].  相似文献

The oxidation of D ‐mannitol by cerium(IV) has been studied spectrophotometrically in aqueous sulfuric acid medium at 25°C at constant ionic strength of 1.60 mol dm?3. A microamount of ruthenium(III) (10?6 mol dm?3) is sufficient to enhance the slow reaction between D ‐mannitol and cerium(IV). The oxidation products were identified by spot test, IR and GC‐MS spectra. The stoichiometry is 1:4, i.e., [D ‐mannitol]: [Ce(IV)] = 1:4. The reaction is first order in both cerium(IV) and ruthenium(III) concentrations. The order with respect to D ‐mannitol concentration varies from first order to zero order as the D ‐mannitol concentration increases. Increase in the sulfuric acid concentration decreases the reaction rate. The added sulfate and bisulfate decreases the rate of reaction. The active species of oxidant and catalyst are Ce(SO4)2 and [Ru(H2O)6]3+, respectively. A possible mechanism is proposed. The activation parameters are determined with respect to a slow step and reaction constants involved have been determined. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 42: 440–452, 2010  相似文献

The oxidation of antimony(III) by cerium(IV) has been studied spectrometrically (stopped flow technique) in aqueous sulphuric acid medium. A minute amount of manganese(II) (10−5 mol dm−3) is sufficient to enhance the slow reaction between antimony(III) and cerium(IV). The stoichiometry is 1:2, i.e. one mole of antimony(III) requires two moles of cerium(IV). The reaction is first order in both cerium(IV) and manganese(II) concentrations. The order with respect to antimony(III) concentration is less than unity (ca 0.3). Increase in sulphuric acid concentration decreases the reaction rate. The added sulphate and bisulphate decreases the rate of reaction. The added products cerium(III) and antimony(V) did not have any significant effect on the reaction rate. The active species of oxidant, substrate and catalyst are Ce(SO4)2, [Sb(OH)(HSO4)]+ and [Mn(H2O)4]2+, respectively. The activation parameters were determined with respect to the slow step. Possible mechanisms are proposed and reaction constants involved have been determined.  相似文献

Oxidation of chromone-3-carboxaldehyde (CCA) and substituted analogues by H2O2 has been carried out in aqueous acid (HCl and H2SO4) and micellar media. Reaction kinetics indicated order in [CCA] as well as [H2O2] to be unity while it is a fraction (1 > n > O) in [acid]. Reaction rates were found to be faster in the solvents of low-dielectric constant (D). Added salt (KCl or (NH4)2SO4) increased the rate of oxidation marginally. On the basis of observed linearity of Amis plot and marginal positive salt effect, protonated CCA (enol form of CCA, a cation) and H2O2 (neutral molecule) were considered as reactive species in the rate limiting step. Reaction rates were found to be enhanced significantly in anionic and nonionic micellar (sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and Triton X-100 (Tx), respectively) media. However, cationic micelles [cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)] indicated marginal retardation effect. Effect of anionic and cationic micelles has been interpreted in terms of electrostatic interactions, while that of nonionic micelles in terms of hydrophobic interactions. Structure-reactivity correlations have been interpreted by Hammett's equation. Negative “ρ” (reaction constant) values indicated cationic transition state. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The kinetics of the oxidation of L-arginine by water-soluble form of colloidal manganese dioxide has been studied using visible spectrophotometry in aqueous as well as micellar media. To obtain the rate constants as functions of [L-arginine], [MnO2] and [HClO4], pseudo-first-order conditions are maintained in each kinetic run. The first-order-rate is observed with respect to [MnO2], whereas fractional-order-rates are determined in both [L-arginine] and [HClO4]. Addition of sodium pyrophosphate and sodium fluoride enhanced the rate of the reaction. The effect of externally added manganese(II) sulphate is complex. It is not possible to predict the exact dependence of the rate constant on manganese(II) concentration, which has a series of reactions with other reactants. The anionic surfactant SDS neither catalyzed nor inhibited the oxidation reaction, while in presence of cationic surfactant CTAB the reaction is not possible due to flocculation of reaction mixture. The reaction is catalyzed by the nonionic surfactant TX-100 which is explained in terms of the mathematical model proposed by Tuncay et al. Activation parameters have been evaluated using Arrhenius and Eyring equations. On the basis of observed kinetic results, a probable mechanism for the reaction has been proposed which corresponds to fast adsorption of the reductant and hydrogen ion on the surface of colloidal MnO2.  相似文献

A minute quantity (10−6 mol dm−3) of iodide catalysed oxidation of l-glutamic acid by CeIV has been studied in H2SO4 and SO 4 2− media. The reaction was first order each in [CeIV] and [I]. The order with respect to [l-glutamic acid] was less than unity (0.71). Increase in [H2SO4] decreased the reaction rate. The added HSO 4 and SO 4 2− decreased the rate of reaction. The added product, succinic acid, had no effect on the reaction rate, whereas added CeIII retarded the reaction. The ionic strength and dielectric constant did not have any significant effect on the rate of reaction. The active species of oxidant was Ce(SO4)2. A suitable mechanism was proposed. The activation parameters were determined with respect to the slow step of the mechanism. The thermodynamic quantities were also determined and discussed.  相似文献

Aqueous solution of water soluble colloidal MnO2 was prepared by Perez-Benito method. Kinetics of l-methionine oxidation by colloidal MnO2 in perchloric acid (0.93 × 10−4 to 3.72 × 10−4 mol dm−3) has been studied spectrophotometrically. The reaction follows first-order kinetics with respect to [H+]. The first-order kinetics with respect to l-methionine at low concentration shifts to zero order at higher concentration. The effects of [Mn(II)] and [F] on the reaction rate were also determined. Manganese (II) has sigmoidal effect on the rate reaction and act as auto catalyst. The exact dependence on [Mn(II)] cannot be explained due to its oxidation by colloidal MnO2. Methionine sulfoxide was formed as the oxidation product of l-methionine. Ammonia and carbon dioxide have not been identified as the reaction products. The mechanism with the observed kinetics has been proposed and discussed.  相似文献

The manganese(II) catalysed oxidation of glycerol by cerium(IV) in aqueous sulphuric acid has been studied spectrophotometrically at 25 °C and I = 1.60 mol dm−3. Stoichiometry analysis shows that one mole of glycerol reacts with two moles of cerium(IV) to give cerium(III) and glycolic aldehyde. The reaction is first order in both cerium(IV) and manganese(II), and the order with respect to glycerol concentration varies from first to zero order as the glycerol concentration increases. Increase in sulphuric acid concentration, added sulphate and bisulphate all decrease the rate. Added cerium(III) retards the rate of reaction, whereas glycolic aldehyde had no effect. The active species of oxidant and catalyst are Ce(SO4)2 and [Mn(H2O)4]2+. A mechanism is proposed, and the reaction constants and activation parameters have been determined.  相似文献

Kinetics of oxidation of DL-malic acid by water soluble colloidal MnO2 (prepared from potassium permanganate and sodium thiosulfate solutions) have been studied spectrophotometrically in the absence and presence of nonionic Triton X-100 surfactant. The reaction is autocatalytic and manganese(II) (reduction product of the colloidal MnO2) may be the autocatalyst. The order of the reaction is first in colloidal [MnO2] as well as in [malic acid] both in the absence and presence of the surfactant. The reaction has acid-dependent and acid-independent paths and, in the former case, the order is fractional in [H+]. The effect of externally added manganese(II) is complex. The results show that the rate constant increases as the manganese(II) concentration is increased. It is not possible to predict the exact dependence of the rate constants on manganese(II) concentration, which has a series of reactions with other reactants. In the presence of TX-100, the observed effect on k is catalytic up to a certain [TX-100]; thereafter, an inhibitory effect follows. The catalytic effect is explained in terms of the mathematical model proposed by Tuncay et al. (in Colloids Surf A Physicochem Eng Aspects 149:279 3). Activation parameters associated with the observed rate constants (kobs/k) have also been evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

The effect of micelles of different surfactants (cationic, anionic, and neutral) on the kinetics of the glucose oxidase-catalyzed reduction of ferrocenium cations RFc+ (R=H, Bun) byd-glucose was studied by spectrophotometry. In micellar media of Triton X-100 and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the Michaelis dependence of the reaction rate on the HFc+ concentration is observed, while this dependence has an extreme character in cationic micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The nature and concentration of surfactants of all types have a slight effect on the rate of reduction of HFc+. The level of enzymatic activity is approximately equal in the case of Triton X-100 and CTAB and is considerably lower in the SDS micelles. On going from HFc+ to BunFc+, the reaction rate is maximum in the cationic CTAB micelles, the anionic SDS micelles exhibit almost no activity, and the activity has an intermediate value in neutral micelles of Triton X-100. The conditions are presented under which the micellar medium controls the catalytic activity of glucose oxidase with respect to ferrocenium cations. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Summary Oxidation of the FeII chelates [FeL] (L = phen or bipy) by CrVI and MnVII in H2SO4 medium was found to proceed through the formation of a bimetallic insertion complex which decomposes in the slow step, followed by electron transfer from [FeL] to the oxidant. The reactions are catalysed by both anionic and non-ionic micelles [SDS and triton-x (Tx), respectively]. A mechanism is suggested involving electrostatic stabilization of the cationic forms of the FeII chelates by anionic SDS and the partial anionic character of polyoxyethylene moiety of Tx, respectively. The marginal catalysis of cationic micelles (CTAB) is attributed to co-anion-micellar interactions.  相似文献

Stoichiometry of the redox reaction of vanadium(V) by ascorbic acid (H2A) has been experimentally determined to be H2A + 2V(V) → A + 2V(IV) + 2H + . Evidence of induced polymerization of acrylonitrile and the reduction of mercuric chloride indicates that a free-radical mechanism operates during the course of reaction. Vanadium(V) is only reduced to vanadium(IV). The kinetics of this redox reaction have been investigated spectrophotometrically at 35°C in acidic media of H2SO4. In this kinetic study we have observed the nature of vanadium(V)-H2A interaction in presence of anionic surfactant of SDS. In V(V)-H2A system, the addition of anionic surfactant (SDS) enhanced the reaction rate and shows catalytic effect. This trend was explained by the incorporation/solubilization of vanadium(V) and ascorbic acid in the Stern layer.  相似文献

The conformation of poly(l-lysine) (PLL) was investigated in sodium alkanesulfonate CnSO3Na (n=8, 7) at various temperatures by circular dichroism spectrum measurements. C8SO3Na induced a double-step conformational change from a coil, to a β-sheet, and then to an α-helix, in which C7SO3Na induced a single-step coil-to-helix conformational change. Binding isotherms of C8SO3Na by PLL were constructed from the potentiometry of equilibrium concentration of the surfactant using a surfactant ion-selective electrode. The curves indicated the cooperative binding characteristic and were analyzed by a linear lattice model using the Bethe approximation. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from the model revealed that the binding of C8SO3Na by PLL was an entropy-driven process. The conformational change was observed at nearly full binding, presumably due to the surfactant clustering of the ordered conformation.  相似文献
