Six series of liquid crystal materials containing a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene unit were synthesized. The liquid crystal compounds obtained were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The properties of liquid crystalline phases were investigated as a function of spacer units, number of aromatic core rings and different terminal moieties. Cyano, methoxy and iodo groups were used as terminal groups. It is found that: (i) compounds having one thiophene ring and one phenyl ring connected by an ester group, with a length/breadth value of 2.1, exhibit no mesophase, while other compounds containing two biphenyl rings, with a length/breadth ratio of 2.7, show mesophases; (ii) the polarity of terminal groups and the flexible spacer length significantly affect the thermal behaviour of these compounds; (iii) the nematic transition range of cyano-containing compounds decreases with increasing length of the flexible spacer, and long alkenyloxy chains tend to facilitate the formation of the smectic phase and suppress the nematic phase in all the mesogenic compounds synthesized.  相似文献

New thermotropic liquid crystal compounds, with one and two mesogenic groups, have been synthesized and characterized. The structural elements of the compounds consist of thiophene ring systems, vinylene units and, for some compounds, carbaldehyde groups. Mesogenic groups involving three thiophene ring systems are normally not liquid crystalline. Only in the case of E,E-5-[5-(5-butyl-2-thienylvinyl)-2-thienylvinyl]-2-thiophenecarbaldehyde could a monotropic nematic phase be easily observed. By replacing thiophene ring systems in the core with a benzene ring system, or by attaching one carbaldehyde group at the moieties, or by doubling the mesogenic groups via an alkylene spacer, the temperature ranges of the mesophases of the compounds with thiophene ring systems can be enlarged or liquid crystal phases induced. The small values for δSNI, which have been observed for the low molecular weight compounds, indicate a very low order in the nematic phases.  相似文献

Four series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing oligooxyethylene spacers have been synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical polarized microscopy (POM). The properties of the liquid crystalline phase were investigated as a function of spacer units, numbers of core aromatic rings, and different terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that (i) the phase transition temperature decreased with the increasing oligooxyethylene spacer unit, (ii) the liquid crystalline phases were enhanced in three phenyl ring system than in two phenyl ring system, and (iii) ferroelectric liquid crystals containing different terminal asymmetric moieties exhibited novel mesophase phenomena. A twist grain boundary phase (TGBA phase) was observed in some compounds of this study. Furthermore, a wide temperature chiral smectic Crange including room temperature was achieved.  相似文献

Two series of new three-ring phenylacetylene liquid crystals were synthesized and their physical properties were evaluated. These liquid crystal materials show only a nematic phase, high clearing points and good solubilities. The compounds containing two cyclohexyl rings exhibit moderate birefringence (Δn) values of around 0.14, while those containing one cyclohexyl ring show a broad nematic phase range and high Δn of around 0.33.  相似文献

A series of 24 cyclic siloxane-based liquid crystalline compounds was synthesized using conventional hydrosilation chemistry. Variables examined included ring size, spacer group length, and type and composition of pendant mesogeric groups. Both pentamethylhydro- and tetramethylhydrosiloxane rings were reacted with mesogens based on cholesterol, biphenyl, or equimolar mixtures of both. Four different length spacer groups containing terminal vinyl groups were used to attach the mesogens to the cyclic siloxane core. The thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). A lengthening of spacer groups resulted in lower crystallization temperatures for the biphenyl-based compounds and lower glass transition temperatures for the cholesterol- and mixed mesogen-based compounds. The tetramethyl ring derivatives exhibited higher glass transition or crystallization temperatures than their pentamethyl counterparts. Biphenyl-based compounds exhibited low temperature crystalline phases while the cholesterol-based compounds exhibited low temperature glassy phases. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Four series of compounds 11?50 containing terminal alicyclic rings such as cyclohexylmethyl, cyclopentylmethyl, cyclobutylmethyl, and cyclopropylmethyl rings were synthesized and their liquid crystal behavior studied. The ring size and the length of flexible alkoxy chain influence the phase formation in different ways. While the smaller ring and the shorter alkoxy chain tend to favor the formation of the N phase, the larger ring and the longer alkoxy chain tend to favor the formation of the SmC phase. All the compounds except 11 and 21 exhibit SmA phases. The widest temperature range of the N, SmA, and SmC phases are found in the compounds 41 , 46 , and 20 , respectively, which are 75 °C for 41 , 115 °C for 46 , and 100 °C for 20 .  相似文献

X-ray diffraction has revealed the structure of the smectic A phase for the ethyl homologue to be intercalated, whereas that for the decyl compound is interdigitated. The existence of the intercalated smectic A phase has previously been explained in terms of a charge-transfer interaction between unlike mesogenic groups. However, for the non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers described here this specific interaction appears unlikely and we discuss, therefore, other possible mechanisms for the formation of intercalated smectic phases.  相似文献

Compounds that contain the strongly dipolar cyanobiphenylyl group exhibit a smectic layer spacing that is about 1.7 times the length of the molecule. Three series of alkoxybiphenylylcontaining dimers exhibit two other smectic modifications. For short spacers, a smectic layer spacing is observed that is about the same length as the molecule and for long spacers the smectic layer spacing is about half the length of the molecule. In the latter cases the entropy change at the SmA-N* transition is clearly larger than for the compounds with the other smectic modifications. One or two compounds in each alkoxybiphenylyl-containing series, that have similar spacer length and terminal group length and have an odd number of flexible units in the spacer, exhibit only a chiral nematic phase, and no smectic phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of several new series of monosubstituted ferrocenyl-containing liquid crystals has been achieved. The results indicate that a terminal ferrocenyl group can promote stabilization of a nematic liquid crystal state. At least three phenyl rings are required in the molecular core in order to provide nematic properties and addition of a fourth ring substantially enhances it. Bulky lateral substituents or the introduction of linker groups that introduce kinks inhibit liquid crystal phase formation. Short highly polarising terminal groups or terminal groups that support hydrogen bonding support liquid crystal behaviour.  相似文献

Three series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a (2S)-2-(6-(4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)-2'-naphthyl)propionate mesogenic group and oligo(oxyethylene) spacers were synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarized microscopy (POM), and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Some of these materials containing four phenyl rings of ester cores (i.e. -Ph-Ph-COO-naph-) and chiral heptyl tail exhibited a rich mesomorphic behaviour, a blue phase (BP), a cholesteric phase (Ch), a smectic A (SA), a twist grain boundary A (TGBA), and a chiral smectic C (SC*) phase. Another series containing four phenyl rings of ester cores and chiral butyl and pentyl chain tails revealed only a SA phase and a SC* phase. Moreover, a crystal E phase was observed in the short spacer chain (n = 0 or 1) homologues of three series of compounds. Also, the mesomorphism properties were discussed as a function of spacer units, numbers of aromatic rings of core, and different terminal asymmetric moieties.  相似文献

In this work, six new compound derivatives from thiophene were synthesised. The three symmetrical compounds were synthesised containing two heterocyclic 1,2,3-triazole on each side of thiophene, 2,5-disubstituted and the three non-symmetrical compounds were synthesised containing alkyne groups as a spacer in replacing one of these heterocycles. The structural modifications were made by changing the number of alkoxy groups in order to understand the relation between structure and mesomorphic behaviour. Some of the compounds presented liquid crystalline properties, smectic and nematic mesophases. The non-symmetrical compounds allowed for a low emission in the blue region.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline properties of five series of biphenyl derivatives connected with p-nitrophenyl, phenyl, 2-naphthyl, 9-phenathryl and bromo as the terminal groups via flexible spacers were studied. All the compounds exhibited nematic phase. The nematic–isotropic or isotropic–nematic transition properties resulted in an odd–even effect as the length of the spacers was varied, in which the even members exhibited higher values, for the compounds with p-nitrophenyl, phenyl, 2-naphthyl and 9-phenanthryl groups, while the transitional properties of the compounds substituted with bromo atom as the terminal group instead of the aryl groups did not show such odd–even effect. These results suggest that the aryl rings, such as p-nitrophenyl, phenyl, 2-naphthyl and 9-phenanthryl groups, play a role of mesogen while the terminal bromo atom does not. The effect of the terminal aryl rings on the liquid crystalline properties will be reported.  相似文献

Novel thermotropic liquid crystals containing a terminal dimethylamino group were synthesized via a multi-step route. Three phenyl ring units linked with ester and azomethine groups constituted the mesogenic core. All the compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. An enantiotropic nematic phase was observed for all the systems studied.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a phenyl biphenyl carboxylate mesogenic group and oligooxyethylene spacers were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurements. These series all contain a smectic A (SA), a chiral smectic C (SC) and a crystal E (Cr E) phase sequence. The ordered smectic Cr E phase was observed for the short spacer chain (n = 0, 1, 2) homologues of the two series. Moreover, the mesomorphic properties are discussed as a function of the oligooxyethylene spacer length, and the position of the aromatic core rings. These results indicate that the structures with a rigid part (biphenyl group) closer to the flexible spacer chain (oxyethylene unit) tend to form the symmetrical smectic SA and Cr E phases.  相似文献

Despite this large lateral protruding substituent, a large nematic range is obtained. We have synthesized azobenzene-based molecules containing either one or two chiral groups. A cholesteric phase can be induced by adding the chiral azobenzene compounds to a host nematic liquid crystal. We investigated the effects of the trans - cis photoisomerization of the chiral azobenzene compounds on the properties of the cholesteric phase, such as the helical pitch length. This can be increased or decreased by the photoisomerization of the chiral azobenzene compounds. We discuss the photochemically driven change in the helical pitch of the cholesteric phase with respect to structural effects involving the chiral groups.  相似文献

A series of new symmetric dimer compounds was synthesized, constaining 2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxypropylene as the central linkage and terminal alkyl chains with different lengths. The chemical structures of the liquid crystal dimers (2ES-n) were examined by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Their mesomorphism, thermodynamic properties and optical textures were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscope and X-ray diffraction. For homologues with terminal propyloxy and butyloxy chains, no liquid crystalline phase was observed. Homologues with pentyloxy and hexyloxy terminal chains showed nematic phases, while those with heptyloxy, octyloxy, nonyloxy and decyloxy terminal chains displayed nematic phases and smectic phases. The results confirmed that the liquid crystalline phase changes from nematic to smectic as the terminal chain length increases.  相似文献
