The effect of the stiffness of the core, treated as a three-dimensional elastic body, on the buckling mode and the critical load is investigated for orthotropic cylindrical shells in axial compression. Parametric equations that permit the easy determination of the critical loads are obtained together with an expression for the stiffness parameter at which the buckling mode changes. A new mathematical model is suggested for nonuniform deformation of composite materials valid for arbitrary external load gradients. As a basis stochastic equations are suggested for the statics of an elastic microinhomogeneous two-component material with volumetric forces differing from zero. A solution is obtained for the elastic equilibrium problem for an anisotropic plate with a circular hole into which is pressed a ring of arbitrary cross section symmetrical about the middle surface of the plate. Before deformation the outside radius of the ring differs from the radius of the hole in the plate by the amount of the permissible elastic displacements. A normal concentrated load is applied to the ring. The ring is analyzed in accordance with the theory of thin curved bars. A numerical example is given.I. Franko L'vov State University. The problem of the stability of a three-layer plate with a central plastic layer of metal sandwiched between elastic glass-reinforced plastic outer layers is considered. The presence of a metal layer restrains the development of creep strains in the glass-reinforced plastic and makes it possible to neglect the viscous strain components. The general equations of the problem are obtained, and the approximate Il'yushin formulation [1] is considered. An example is presented for a rectangular plate in pure shear. It is shown that the elastic anisotropic layers play the part of a load-relieving system for the central plastic layer [3], which results in an increase in the over-all critical load for the layered plate.Kalinin Polytechnic Institute. The article deals with the spatial problem of the limit equilibrium of an isotropic elastic body weakened by a three-dimensional crack with an almost planar surface. At infinity the body is subjected to tensile constant forces of intensity p. With the small parameter method this problem is reduced to a series of problems for a body with a disk-shaped crack. The generalized self-consistent method is extended to the problems of statistical mechanics of composites with random elastic properties of inclusions. This approach makes it possible to reduce the problem of predicting the effective elastic properties of composites with random structures to a sequence of simpler homogenized boundary-value problems for solitary inclusions with inhomogeneous elastic transition layers in a homogeneous effective elastic medium and with the corresponding boundary conditions. The elastic properties of a solitary inclusion for the gth homogenized problem are found from the solutions of the gth and (g+1)th homogenized problems. The elastic properties and sizes of the transition layers account for the random distribution, random sizes, and random elastic properties of inclusions in the composite. A test problem of predicting the effective elastic properties of a transversely isotropic layer composite with random elastic properties of some layers is solved by using the method proposed. An analytic method of calculating the deformations of an infinitely long thick-walled cylinder under a periodically varying gravitational load is described. The cylinder material is linearly viscoelastic. The solution employs the elasto-viscoelastic analogy. The corresponding elastic problem is solved by Muskhelishvili's method. The nonhomogeneity of the equilibrium equations is eliminated by applying the theorem of body forces with a potential function. The dynamic stability of glass-reinforced plastic shells subjected to the action of a longitudinal pulsating force and an external, uniformly distributed load is examined. A ray method based on geometrical optics is applied to solve the problem of propagation of harmonic elastic waves excited by the perturbation of the surface of a noncircular cylindrical cavity. The bending characteristics of a composite panel with asymmetric layered structure under local surface loads are obtained. A refined version of the applied theory is developed using the analytical solution of the bending problem of a sandwich plate with arbitrary asymmetric structure under a point load. Local effects are investigated within the limits of a discrete model allowing for the specific character of elastic properties of a soft filler. The advantages of the solution are expressions of bending characteristics — layer curvatures, displacements, and stresses — in a closed form. It is shown that these characteristics can vary several times depending on the asymmetry parameters of the structure. Degeneration peculiarities of the solution, stemming from the slipping of layers or, otherwise, their rigid linking by the Kirchoff—Love hypothesis, as well as from account of the transverse shear and compression of the normal, are examined in line with the degeneration of geometric and physical parameters of the discrete model adopted. We consider a two-dimensional problem concerned with static deformation of an elastic halfstrip under the action of a self-equilibrated load at its end. An ultrasonic method of determining the elastic characteristics, developed for isotropic materials and based on the measurement of the angles of total internal reflection of ultrasound at a liquid-solid interface, is applied to an anisotropic Compreg of the DSPA type. The results obtained for the shear modulus using the ultrasonic method at 2.5 MHz and an independent method based on measuring the frequency of the damped torsional vibrations of a prismatic bar at 10–30 Hz are compared. The problem of a long hollow viscoelastic cylinder, enclosed in an elastic shell and loaded by internal pressure, is considered. Two cases are investigated: 1) the shear and volume relaxation kernels are proportional; 2) the shear and volume creep kernels are proportional. Resolving integral equations with singular kernels of a nondifference type are obtained and a method of solution is proposed. Conclusions 1. Relationships have been obtained for determining nine elastic characteristics of orthotropic composite materials from the properties of the starting components and the assigned reinforcement scheme.2. Formulas are given for calculating the propagation velocity of three types of elastic flat waves for an arbitrary direction in one of the planes of elastic symmetry of a uniform orthotropic material.3. It has been shown that the velocity of the first arrival of a packet of ultrasonic vibrations which is recorded in an experiment is equal to the velocity of motion of the wave front in a limitless medium even for rather thin (5–10 mm) fiberglass-plastic specimens with unidirectional or cross-reinforced schemes.4. It is shown that, if certain conditions are satisfied, the solution of a viscoelastic mixed boundary value problem can be obtained from the solution of the corresponding elastic problem by substituting time operators for the body and surface forces or given displacements. A similar assertion is also proved for media with time-varying properties. A theoretical basis is provided for the experimental method of determining the elastic and strength properties of materials by stretching ring specimens with a pair of rigid half-disks. The equilibrium equations of the plane problem for an anisotropic ring with mixed boundary conditions are solved by means of an expansion in Fourier series with respect to the circumferential coordinate.
