Previous studies have demonstrated that perturbations in voice pitch or loudness feedback lead to compensatory changes in voice F(0) or amplitude during production of sustained vowels. Responses to pitch-shifted auditory feedback have also been observed during English and Mandarin speech. The present study investigated whether Mandarin speakers would respond to amplitude-shifted feedback during meaningful speech production. Native speakers of Mandarin produced two-syllable utterances with focus on the first syllable, the second syllable, or none of the syllables, as prompted by corresponding questions. Their acoustic speech signal was fed back to them with loudness shifted by +/-3 dB for 200 ms durations. The responses to the feedback perturbations had mean latencies of approximately 142 ms and magnitudes of approximately 0.86 dB. Response magnitudes were greater and latencies were longer when emphasis was placed on the first syllable than when there was no emphasis. Since amplitude is not known for being highly effective in encoding linguistic contrasts, the fact that subjects reacted to amplitude perturbation just as fast as they reacted to F(0) perturbations in previous studies provides clear evidence that a highly automatic feedback mechanism is active in controlling both F(0) and amplitude of speech production.  相似文献

To determine if the speaking fundamental frequency (F0) profiles of English and Mandarin differ, a variety of voice samples from male and female speakers were compared. The two languages' F0 profiles were sometimes found to differ, but these differences depended on the particular speech samples being compared. Most notably, the physiological F0 ranges of the speakers, determined from tone sweeps, hardly differed between the two languages, indicating that the English and Mandarin speakers' voices are comparable. Their use of F0 in single-word utterances was, however, quite different, with the Mandarin speakers having higher maximums and means, and larger ranges, even when only the Mandarin high falling tone was compared with English. In contrast, for a prose passage, the two languages were more similar, differing only in the mean F0, Mandarin again being higher. The study thus contributes to the growing literature showing that languages can differ in their F0 profile, but highlights the fact that the choice of speech materials to compare can be critical.  相似文献

Native speakers of Mandarin Chinese have difficulty producing native-like English stress contrasts. Acoustically, English lexical stress is multidimensional, involving manipulation of fundamental frequency (F0), duration, intensity and vowel quality. Errors in any or all of these correlates could interfere with perception of the stress contrast, but it is unknown which correlates are most problematic for Mandarin speakers. This study compares the use of these correlates in the production of lexical stress contrasts by 10 Mandarin and 10 native English speakers. Results showed that Mandarin speakers produced significantly less native-like stress patterns, although they did use all four acoustic correlates to distinguish stressed from unstressed syllables. Mandarin and English speakers' use of amplitude and duration were comparable for both stressed and unstressed syllables, but Mandarin speakers produced stressed syllables with a higher F0 than English speakers. There were also significant differences in formant patterns across groups, such that Mandarin speakers produced English-like vowel reduction in certain unstressed syllables, but not in others. Results suggest that Mandarin speakers' production of lexical stress contrasts in English is influenced partly by native-language experience with Mandarin lexical tones, and partly by similarities and differences between Mandarin and English vowel inventories.  相似文献

A growing body of contemporary research has investigated differences between trained and untrained singing voices. However, few studies have separated untrained singers into those who do and do not express abilities related to singing talent, including accurate pitch control and production of a pleasant timbre (voice quality). This investigation studied measures of the singing power ratio (SPR), which is a quantitative measure of the resonant quality of the singing voice. SPR reflects the amplification or suppression in the vocal tract of the harmonics produced by the sound source. This measure was acquired from the voices of untrained talented and nontalented singers as a means to objectively investigate voice quality differences. Measures of SPR were acquired from vocal samples with fast Fourier transform (FFT) power spectra to analyze the amplitude level of the partials in the acoustic spectrum. Long-term average spectra (LTAS) were also analyzed. Results indicated significant differences in SPR between groups, which suggest that vocal tract resonance, and its effect on perceived vocal timbre or quality, may be an important variable related to the perception of singing talent. LTAS confirmed group differences in the tuning of vocal tract harmonics.  相似文献

The effects of variations in vocal effort corresponding to common conversation situations on spectral properties of vowels were investigated. A database in which three degrees of vocal effort were suggested to the speakers by varying the distance to their interlocutor in three steps (close--0.4 m, normal--1.5 m, and far--6 m) was recorded. The speech materials consisted of isolated French vowels, uttered by ten naive speakers in a quiet furnished room. Manual measurements of fundamental frequency F0, frequencies, and amplitudes of the first three formants (F1, F2, F3, A1, A2, and A3), and on total amplitude were carried out. The speech materials were perceptually validated in three respects: identity of the vowel, gender of the speaker, and vocal effort. Results indicated that the speech materials were appropriate for the study. Acoustic analysis showed that F0 and F1 were highly correlated with vocal effort and varied at rates close to 5 Hz/dB for F0 and 3.5 Hz/dB for F1. Statistically F2 and F3 did not vary significantly with vocal effort. Formant amplitudes A1, A2, and A3 increased significantly; The amplitudes in the high-frequency range increased more than those in the lower part of the spectrum, revealing a change in spectral tilt. On the average, when the overall amplitude is increased by 10 dB, A1, A2, and A3 are increased by 11, 12.4, and 13 dB, respectively. Using "auditory" dimensions, such as the F1-F0 difference, and a "spectral center of gravity" between adjacent formants for representing vowel features did not reveal a better constancy of these parameters with respect to the variations of vocal effort and speaker. Thus a global view is evoked, in which all of the aspects of the signal should be processed simultaneously.  相似文献

Spectral amplitude measures are sensitive to varying degrees of vocal fold adduction in normal speakers. This study examined the applicability of harmonic amplitude differences to adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) in comparison with normal controls. Amplitudes of the first and second harmonics (H1, H2) and of harmonics affiliated with the first, second, and third formants (A1, A2, A3) were obtained from spectra of vowels and /i/ excerpted from connected speech. Results indicated that these measures could be made reliably in ADSD. With the exception of H1(*)-H2(*), harmonic amplitude differences (H1(*)-A1, H1(*)-A2, and H1(*)-A3(*)) exhibited significant negative linear relationships (P < 0.05) with clinical judgments of overall severity. The four harmonic amplitude differences significantly differentiated between pre-BT and post-BT productions (P < 0.05). After treatment, measurements from detected significant differences between ADSD and normal controls (P < 0.05), but measurements from /i/ did not. LTAS analysis of ADSD patients' speech samples proved a good fit with harmonic amplitude difference measures. Harmonic amplitude differences also significantly correlated with perceptual judgments of breathiness and roughness (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate high clinical applicability for harmonic amplitude differences for characterizing phonation in the speech of persons with ADSD, as well as normal speakers, and they suggest promise for future application to other voice pathologies.  相似文献

Background

Spectrum is a fast Fourier transform-generated power spectrum extracted from the speech sample. It is reported to provide a quantitative acoustic index of the degree of glottal abduction and adduction in voices perceived to be breathy or pressed. In the present study, it was hypothesized that there would be abnormal reduction of higher harmonic amplitudes relative to the amplitude of the first harmonics in the subjects with vocal nodules and hence the present study was carried out.

Method

One hundred twenty participants were divided into clinical group and control group. They were instructed to phonate /a/ at their most comfortable pitch and loudness. Fourier transformation of the recorded acoustic signal was first performed to create a spectrum. Amplitudes were measured for the first and second harmonics (H1 and H2) as well as the harmonics at the first, second, and third formants (A1, A2, and A3) using the Computerized Speech Science Lab (Kay Pentax, Lincoln, NJ).

Results

There was a significant difference between the means of two groups for all the parameters, such as H1-H2, H1-A1, H1-A2, and H1-A3 at P < 0.05. The obtained results are discussed with respect to the underlying pathophysiology.

Conclusions

The present study investigated the vowel harmonic amplitude differences in persons with vocal nodules. The results revealed a significant difference between the two groups for the vowel harmonic amplitude differences. This particular measure could be used to track the changes following the vocal treatment.  相似文献

Although the amount of inharmonic energy (noise) present in a human voice is an important determinant of vocal quality, little is known about the perceptual interaction between harmonic and inharmonic aspects of the voice source. This paper reports three experiments investigating this issue. Results indicate that perception of the harmonic slope and of noise levels are both influenced by complex interactions between the spectral shape and relative levels of harmonic and noise energy in the voice source. Just-noticeable differences (JNDs) for the noise-to-harmonics ratio (NHR) varied significantly with the NHR and harmonic spectral slope, but NHR had no effect on JNDs for NHR when harmonic slopes were steepest, and harmonic slope had no effect when NHRs were highest. Perception of changes in the harmonic source slope depended on NHR and on the harmonic source slope: JNDs increased when spectra rolled off steeply, with this effect in turn depending on NHR. Finally, all effects were modulated by the shape of the noise spectrum. It thus appears that, beyond masking, understanding perception of individual parameters requires knowledge of the acoustic context in which they function, consistent with the view that voices are integral patterns that resist decomposition.  相似文献

Key features of the voice--fundamental frequency (F(0)) and formant frequencies (Fn)--can vary extensively among individuals. Some of this variation might cue fitness-related, biosocial dimensions of speakers. Three experiments tested the independent, joint and relative effects of F(0) and Fn on listeners' assessments of the body size, masculinity (or femininity), and attractiveness of male and female speakers. Experiment 1 replicated previous findings concerning the joint and independent effects of F(0) and Fn on these assessments. Experiment 2 established frequency discrimination thresholds (or just-noticeable differences, JND's) for both vocal features to use in subsequent tests of their relative salience. JND's for F(0) and Fn were consistent in the range of 5%-6% for each sex. Experiment 3 put the two voice features in conflict by equally discriminable amounts and found that listeners consistently tracked Fn over F(0) in rating all three dimensions. Several non-exclusive possibilities for this outcome are considered, including that voice Fn provides more reliable cues to one or more dimensions and that listeners' assessments of the different dimensions are partially interdependent. Results highlight the value of first establishing JND's for discrimination of specific features of natural voices in future work examining their effects on voice-based social judgments.  相似文献

The purpose of this cross-language study was to examine whether the online control of voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) during vowel phonation is influenced by language experience. Native speakers of Cantonese and Mandarin, both tonal languages spoken in China, participated in the experiments. Subjects were asked to vocalize a vowel sound /u/at their comfortable habitual F(0), during which their voice pitch was unexpectedly shifted (± 50, ± 100, ± 200, or ± 500 cents, 200 ms duration) and fed back instantaneously to them over headphones. The results showed that Cantonese speakers produced significantly smaller responses than Mandarin speakers when the stimulus magnitude varied from 200 to 500 cents. Further, response magnitudes decreased along with the increase in stimulus magnitude in Cantonese speakers, which was not observed in Mandarin speakers. These findings suggest that online control of voice F(0) during vocalization is sensitive to language experience. Further, systematic modulations of vocal responses across stimulus magnitude were observed in Cantonese speakers but not in Mandarin speakers, which indicates that this highly automatic feedback mechanism is sensitive to the specific tonal system of each language.  相似文献

Traditional interval or ordinal rating scale protocols appear to be poorly suited to measuring vocal quality. To investigate why this might be so, listeners were asked to classify pathological voices as having or not having different voice qualities. It was reasoned that this simple task would allow listeners to focus on the kind of quality a voice had, rather than how much of a quality it possessed, and thus might provide evidence for the validity of traditional vocal qualities. In experiment 1, listeners judged whether natural pathological voice samples were or were not primarily breathy and rough. Listener agreement in both tasks was above chance, but listeners agreed poorly that individual voices belonged in particular perceptual classes. To determine whether these results reflect listeners' difficulty agreeing about single perceptual attributes of complex stimuli, listeners in experiment 2 classified natural pathological voices and synthetic stimuli (varying in f0 only) as low pitched or not low pitched. If disagreements derive from difficulties dividing an auditory continuum consistently, then patterns of agreement should be similar for both kinds of stimuli. In fact, listener agreement was significantly better for the synthetic stimuli than for the natural voices. Difficulty isolating single perceptual dimensions of complex stimuli thus appears to be one reason why traditional unidimensional rating protocols are unsuited to measuring pathologic voice quality. Listeners did agree that a few aphonic voices were breathy, and that a few voices with prominent vocal fry and/or interharmonics were rough. These few cases of agreement may have occurred because the acoustic characteristics of the voices in question corresponded to the limiting case of the quality being judged. Values of f0 that generated listener agreement in experiment 2 were more extreme for natural than for synthetic stimuli, consistent with this interpretation.  相似文献

SUMMARY: The present study investigated the effect of tonal changes on voice onset time (VOT) between normal laryngeal (NL) and superior esophageal (SE) speakers of Mandarin Chinese. VOT values were measured from the syllables /pha/, /tha/, and /kha/ produced at four tone levels by eight NL and seven SE speakers who were native speakers of Mandarin. Results indicated that Mandarin tones were associated with significantly different VOT values for NL speakers, in which high-falling tone was associated with significantly shorter VOT values than mid-rising tone and falling-rising tone. Regarding speaker group, SE speakers showed significantly shorter VOT values than NL speakers across all tone levels. This may be related to their use of pharyngoesophageal (PE) segment as another sound source. SE speakers appear to take a shorter time to start PE segment vibration compared to NL speakers using the vocal folds for vibration.  相似文献

A hypophonic voice, characterized perceptually as weak and breathy, is associated with voice disorders such as vocal fold atrophy and unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Although voice therapy programs for hypophonia typically address the vocal folds or the sound source, twang voice quality was examined in this study as an alternative technique for increasing vocal power by altering the epilarynx or the sound filter. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of twang production on physiologic, acoustic, and perceived voice handicap measures in speakers with hypophonia. DESIGN/METHODS: This prospective pilot study compared the vocal outcomes of six participants with hypophonia at pre- and posttreatment time points. Outcome measures included mean airflow rate, intensity in dB sound pressure level (SPL), maximum phonation time, and self-report of voice handicap. RESULTS: All subjects improved in at least three of the four vocal outcome measures. Wilcoxon signed-rank test of paired differences revealed significant differences between pre- and posttherapy group means for airflow rate, SPL, and Voice Handicap Index scores. CONCLUSION: The twang voice quality as a manipulation of the sound filter offers a clinical complement to traditional voice therapies that primarily address the sound source.  相似文献

This study concerns speaking voice quality in a group of male teachers (n = 35) and male actors (n = 36), as the purpose was to investigate normal and supranormal voices. The goal was the development of a method of valid perceptual evaluation for normal to supranormal and resonant voices. The voices (text reading at two loudness levels) had been evaluated by 10 listeners, for 15 vocal characteristics using VA scales. In this investigation, the results of an exploratory factor analysis of the vocal characteristics used in this method are presented, reflecting four dimensions of major importance for normal and supranormal voices. Special emphasis is placed on the effects on voice quality of a change in the loudness variable, as two loudness levels are studied. Furthermore, the vocal characteristics Sonority and Ringing voice quality are paid special attention, as the essence of the term "resonant voice" was a basic issue throughout a doctoral dissertation where this study was included.  相似文献

Acoustic characteristics of American English sentence stress produced by native Mandarin speakers are reported. Fundamental frequency (F0), vowel duration, and vowel intensity in the sentence-level stress produced by 40 Mandarin speakers were compared to those of 40 American English speakers. Results obtained from two methods of stress calculation indicated that Mandarin speakers of American English are able to differentiate stressed and unstressed words according to features of F0, duration, and intensity. Although the group of Mandarin speakers were able to signal stress in their sentence productions, the acoustic characteristics of stress were not identical to the American speakers. Mandarin speakers were found to produce stressed words with a significantly higher F0 and shorter duration compared to the American speakers. The groups also differed in production of unstressed words with Mandarin speakers using a higher F0 and greater intensity compared to American speakers. Although the acoustic differences observed may reflect an interference of L1 Mandarin in the production of L2 American English, the outcome of this study suggests no critical divergence between these speakers in the way they implement American English sentence stress.  相似文献

To determine the minimum difference in amplitude between spectral peaks and troughs sufficient for vowel identification by normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners, four vowel-like complex sounds were created by summing the first 30 harmonics of a 100-Hz tone. The amplitudes of all harmonics were equal, except for two consecutive harmonics located at each of three "formant" locations. The amplitudes of these harmonics were equal and ranged from 1-8 dB more than the remaining components. Normal-hearing listeners achieved greater than 75% accuracy when peak-to-trough differences were 1-2 dB. Normal-hearing listeners who were tested in a noise background sufficient to raise their thresholds to the level of a flat, moderate hearing loss needed a 4-dB difference for identification. Listeners with a moderate, flat hearing loss required a 6- to 7-dB difference for identification. The results suggest, for normal-hearing listeners, that the peak-to-trough amplitude difference required for identification of this set of vowels is very near the threshold for detection of a change in the amplitude spectrum of a complex signal. Hearing-impaired listeners may have difficulty using closely spaced formants for vowel identification due to abnormal smoothing of the internal representation of the spectrum by broadened auditory filters.  相似文献

This study examines voice perturbation parameters of the sustained [a] in English and of the eight vowels in Turkish to discover whether any difference exists between these languages, and whether a correlation exists between voice perturbation parameters and articulatory and acoustic properties of the Turkish vowels. Eight Turkish vowels uttered by 26 healthy nonsmoker volunteer males who are native Turkish speakers were compared with a voice database that includes samples of normal and disordered voices belonging to American English speakers. Fundamental frequencies, the first and second formants, and perturbation parameters, such as jitter percent, pitch perturbation quotient, shimmer percent, and amplitude perturbation quotient of the sustained vowels, were measured. Also, the first and second formants of the sustained [a] in English were measured, and other parameters have been obtained from the database. When the voice perturbation parameters in Turkish and English were compared, statistically significant differences were not found. However, when Turkish vowels compared with each other, statistically significant differences were found among perturbation values. Categorical comparisons of the Turkish vowels like high-low, rounded-unrounded, and front-back revealed significant differences in perturbation values. In correlation analysis, a weak linear inverse relation between jitter percent and the first formant (r=-0.260, p<0.05) was found.  相似文献

Modeling sources of listener variability in voice quality assessment is the first step in developing reliable, valid protocols for measuring quality, and provides insight into the reasons that listeners disagree in their quality assessments. This study examined the adequacy of one such model by quantifying the contributions of four factors to interrater variability: instability of listeners' internal standards for different qualities, difficulties isolating individual attributes in voice patterns, scale resolution, and the magnitude of the attribute being measured. One hundred twenty listeners in six experiments assessed vocal quality in tasks that differed in scale resolution, in the presence/absence of comparison stimuli, and in the extent to which the comparison stimuli (if present) matched the target voices. These factors accounted for 84.2% of the variance in the likelihood that listeners would agree exactly in their assessments. Providing listeners with comparison stimuli that matched the target voices doubled the likelihood that they would agree exactly. Listeners also agreed significantly better when assessing quality on continuous versus six-point scales. These results indicate that interrater variability is an issue of task design, not of listener unreliability.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated that motor control of segmental features of speech rely to some extent on sensory feedback. Control of voice fundamental frequency (F0) has been shown to be modulated by perturbations in voice pitch feedback during various phonatory tasks and in Mandarin speech. The present study was designed to determine if voice Fo is modulated in a task-dependent manner during production of suprasegmental features of English speech. English speakers received pitch-modulated voice feedback (+/-50, 100, and 200 cents, 200 ms duration) during a sustained vowel task and a speech task. Response magnitudes during speech (mean 31.5 cents) were larger than during the vowels (mean 21.6 cents), response magnitudes increased as a function of stimulus magnitude during speech but not vowels, and responses to downward pitch-shift stimuli were larger than those to upward stimuli. Response latencies were shorter in speech (mean 122 ms) compared to vowels (mean 154 ms). These findings support previous research suggesting the audio vocal system is involved in the control of suprasegmental features of English speech by correcting for errors between voice pitch feedback and the desired F0.  相似文献

To identify a speaker's sex, listeners may rely on sex-based differences in average fundamental frequency (F0), but overlap in male and female F0 ranges undermines such judgments. To test accuracy of sex-identification throughout the F0 range, listeners were asked to judge sex based on audio recordings of /ɑ/ spoken on a number of overlapping steady F0s by 10 male and 10 female English speakers. In general, listeners performed above chance (71.6% correct). However, near range extrema, listeners followed an apparent bias toward hearing high F0s as female and low as male; confidence was high when accuracy was high and vice-versa. At mid-range, listeners identified sex fairly accurately but were not very confident in their judgments. In a forced-choice task, vowels close in F0 (but beyond the difference limen) were presented in male-female or female-male pairs. Listeners weakly identified speaker sex (63.3% correct). Identification of the male voice was considerably above chance only when the male had the lower F0 of the pair. Reliance on stereotypes of speaking F0 may bias listeners to hear low F0s as male and high F0s as female, perhaps with a contribution from vocal-tract length information. No strong evidence for a contribution of voice quality obtained.  相似文献
