The main goal of this paper is to present results of existence and nonexistence of convex functions on Riemannian manifolds, and in the case of the existence, we associate such functions to the geometry of the manifold. Precisely, we prove that the conservativity of the geodesic flow on a Riemannian manifold with infinite volume is an obstruction to the existence of convex functions. Next, we present a geometric condition that ensures the existence of (strictly) convex functions on a particular class of complete manifolds, and we use this fact to construct a manifold whose sectional curvature assumes any real value greater than a negative constant and admits a strictly convex function. In the last result, we relate the geometry of a Riemannian manifold of positive sectional curvature with the set of minimum points of a convex function defined on the manifold.  相似文献

Surface Reconstruction by Voronoi Filtering   总被引:24,自引:0,他引:24
We give a simple combinatorial algorithm that computes a piecewise-linear approximation of a smooth surface from a finite set of sample points. The algorithm uses Voronoi vertices to remove triangles from the Delaunay triangulation. We prove the algorithm correct by showing that for densely sampled surfaces, where density depends on a local feature size function, the output is topologically valid and convergent (both pointwise and in surface normals) to the original surface. We briefly describe an implementation of the algorithm and show example outputs. Received August 25, 1998, and in revised form March 31, 1999.  相似文献

The concept of a geodesic invex subset of a Riemannian manifold is introduced. Geodesic invex and preinvex functions on a geodesic invex set with respect to particular maps are defined. The relation between geodesic invexity and preinvexity of functions on manifolds is studied. Using proximal subdifferential, certain results concerning extremum points of a non smooth geodesic preinvex function on a geodesic invex set are obtained. The main value inequality and the mean value theorem in invexity analysis are extended to Cartan-Hadamard manifolds.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce horizontal and vertical warped product Finsler manifolds. We prove that every C-reducible or proper Berwaldian doubly warped product Finsler manifold is Riemannian. Then, we find the relation between Riemannian curvatures of doubly warped product Finsler manifold and its components, and consider the cases that this manifold is flat or has scalar flag curvature. We define the doubly warped Sasaki-Matsumoto metric for warped product manifolds and find a condition under which the horizontal and vertical tangent bundles are totally geodesic. We obtain some conditions under which a foliated manifold reduces to a Reinhart manifold. Finally, we study an almost complex structure on the tangent bundle of a doubly warped product Finsler manifold.  相似文献

A characterization of Lipschitz behavior of functions defined on Riemannian manifolds is given in this paper. First, it is extended the concept of proximal subgradient and some results of proximal analysis from Hilbert space to Riemannian manifold setting. A technique introduced by Clarke, Stern and Wolenski [F.H. Clarke, R.J. Stern, P.R. Wolenski, Subgradient criteria for monotonicity, the Lipschitz condition, and convexity, Canad. J. Math. 45 (1993) 1167-1183], for generating proximal subgradients of functions defined on a Hilbert spaces, is also extended to Riemannian manifolds in order to provide that characterization. A number of examples of Lipschitz functions are presented so as to show that the Lipschitz behavior of functions defined on Riemannian manifolds depends on the Riemannian metric.  相似文献

A weak characterisation of the Delaunay triangulation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We consider a new construction, the weak Delaunay triangulation of a finite point set in a metric space, which contains as a subcomplex the traditional (strong) Delaunay triangulation. The two simplicial complexes turn out to be equal for point sets in Euclidean space, as well as in the (hemi)sphere, hyperbolic space, and certain other geometries. There are weighted and approximate versions of the weak and strong complexes in all these geometries, and we prove equality theorems in those cases also. On the other hand, for discrete metric spaces the weak and strong complexes are decidedly different. We give a short empirical demonstration that weak Delaunay complexes can lead to dramatically clean results in the problem of estimating the homology groups of a manifold represented by a finite point sample.   相似文献

We study a special case of the critical point (Morse) theory of distance functions namely, the gradient flow associated with the distance function to a finite point set in . The fixed points of this flow are exactly the critical points of the distance function. Our main result is a mathematical characterization and algorithms to compute the stable manifolds, i.e., the inflow regions, of the fixed points. It turns out that the stable manifolds form a polyhedral complex that shares many properties with the Delaunay triangulation of the same point set. We call the latter complex the flow complex of the point set. The flow complex is suited for geometric modeling tasks like surface reconstruction.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a proximal algorithm for unconstrained optimization on the cone of symmetric semidefinite positive matrices. It appears to be the first in the proximal class on the set of methods that convert a Symmetric Definite Positive Optimization in Nonlinear Optimization. It replaces the main iteration of the conceptual proximal point algorithm by a sequence of nonlinear programming problems on the cone of diagonal definite positive matrices that has the structure of the positive orthant of the Euclidian vector space. We are motivated by results of the classical proximal algorithm extended to Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. An important example of such a manifold is the space of symmetric definite positive matrices, where the metrics is given by the Hessian of the standard barrier function −lndet(X). Observing the obvious fact that proximal algorithms do not depend on the geodesics, we apply those ideas to develop a proximal point algorithm for convex functions in this Riemannian metric.  相似文献

We show that the Vrănceanu connection which was initially introduced on non-holonomic manifolds can be used to study the geometry of foliated manifolds. We prove that a foliation is totally geodesic with bundle-like metric if and only if this connection is a metric one. We introduce the notion of a foliated Riemannian manifold of constant transversal Vrănceanu curvature and the notion of a transversal Einstein foliated Riemannian manifold. The geometry of these two classes of manifolds is studied and the relationship between them is determined.  相似文献

In the present paper, we consider a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold with an irreducible SO(3)-structure as an example of an abstract statistical manifold. We prove that if a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold with an irreducible SO(3)-structure is a statistical manifold of constant curvature, then the metric of the Riemannian manifold is an Einstein metric. In addition, we show that a five-dimensional Euclidean sphere with an irreducible SO(3)-structure cannot be a conjugate symmetric statistical manifold. Finally, we show some results for a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a nearly integrable SO(3)-structure. For example, we prove that the structure tensor of a nearly integrable SO(3)-structure on a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold is a harmonic symmetric tensor and it defines the first integral of third order of the equations of geodesics. Moreover, we consider some topological properties of five-dimensional compact and conformally flat Riemannian manifolds with irreducible SO(3)-structure.  相似文献

It is a well-established fact that the witness complex is closely related to the restricted Delaunay triangulation in low dimensions. Specifically, it has been proved that the witness complex coincides with the restricted Delaunay triangulation on curves, and is still a subset of it on surfaces, under mild sampling conditions. In this paper, we prove that these results do not extend to higher-dimensional manifolds, even under strong sampling conditions such as uniform point density. On the positive side, we show how the sets of witnesses and landmarks can be enriched, so that the nice relations that exist between restricted Delaunay triangulation and witness complex hold on higher-dimensional manifolds as well. We derive from our structural results an algorithm that reconstructs manifolds of any arbitrary dimension or co-dimension at different scales. The algorithm combines a farthest-point refinement scheme with a vertex pumping strategy. It is very simple conceptually, and it does not require the input point sample to be sparse. Its running time is bounded by c(d)n 2, where n is the size of the input point cloud, and c(d) is a constant depending solely (yet exponentially) on the dimension d of the ambient space. Although this running time makes our reconstruction algorithm rather theoretical, recent work has shown that a variant of our approach can be made tractable in arbitrary dimensions, by building upon the results of this paper. In this paper, we study the expectation values of topological invariants of the Vietoris–Rips complex and ?ech complex for a finite set of sample points on a Riemannian manifold. We show that the Betti number and Euler characteristic of the complexes are Lipschitz functions of the scale parameter and that there is an interval such that the Betti curve converges to the Betti number of the underlying manifold.

Reconstruction Using Witness Complexes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We present a novel reconstruction algorithm that, given an input point set sampled from an object S, builds a one-parameter family of complexes that approximate S at different scales. At a high level, our method is very similar in spirit to Chew’s surface meshing algorithm, with one notable difference though: the restricted Delaunay triangulation is replaced by the witness complex, which makes our algorithm applicable in any metric space. To prove its correctness on curves and surfaces, we highlight the relationship between the witness complex and the restricted Delaunay triangulation in 2d and in 3d. Specifically, we prove that both complexes are equal in 2d and closely related in 3d, under some mild sampling assumptions.  相似文献

Schur's theorem states that an isotropic Riemannian manifold of dimension greater than two has constant curvature. It is natural to guess that compact almost isotropic Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater than two are close to spaces of almost constant curvature. We take the curvature anisotropy as the discrepancy of the sectional curvatures at a point. The main result of this paper is that Riemannian manifolds in Cheeger's class ℜ(n,d,V,A) withL 1-small integral anisotropy haveL p-small change of the sectional curvature over the manifold. We also estimate the deviation of the metric tensor from that of constant curvature in theW p 2 -norm, and prove that compact almost isotropic spaces inherit the differential structure of a space form. These stability results are based on the generalization of Schur' theorem to metric spaces.  相似文献

In this paper we explain how the so-called adapted complex structures can be used to associate to each compact real-analytic Riemannian manifold a family of complete Kähler-Einstein metrics and show that already one element of this family uniquely determines the original manifold. The underlying manifolds of these metrics are open disc bundles in the tangent bundle of the original Riemannian manifold.

We extend the complex-valued analytic torsion, introduced by Burghelea and Haller on closed manifolds, to compact Riemannian bordisms. We do so by considering a flat complex vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold, endowed with a fiberwise nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form. The Riemmanian metric and the bilinear form are used to define non-selfadjoint Laplacians acting on vector-valued smooth forms under absolute and relative boundary conditions. In order to define the complex-valued analytic torsion in this situation, we study spectral properties of these generalized Laplacians. Then, as main results, we obtain so-called anomaly formulas for this torsion. Our reasoning takes into account that the coefficients in the heat trace asymptotic expansion associated to the boundary value problem under consideration, are locally computable. The anomaly formulas for the complex-valued Ray–Singer torsion are derived first by using the corresponding ones for the Ray–Singer metric, obtained by Brüning and Ma on manifolds with boundary, and then an argument of analytic continuation. In odd dimensions, our anomaly formulas are in accord with the corresponding results of Su, without requiring the variations of the Riemannian metric and bilinear structures to be supported in the interior of the manifold.  相似文献

We prove that a totally geodesic map between a Riemannian manifold and a metric space can be represented as the composite of a totally geodesic map from a Riemannian manifold to a Finslerian manifold and a locally isometric embedding between metric spaces. As a corollary, we obtain the homotheticity of a totally geodesic map from an irreducible Riemannian manifold to an Alexandrov space of curvature bounded above. This is a generalization of the case between Riemannian manifolds. A sub-Riemannian manifold is a differentiable manifold together with a smooth distribution which is equipped with a Riemannian metric. In this paper we attempt to study sub-Riemannian symmetric spaces (i.e., homogeneous sub-Riemannian manifolds admitting an involutive sub-Riemannian isometry at all points which is a central symmetry when restricted to the distribution) where the associated distribution is a codimension three fat distribution. We obtain a restricted classification theorem in dimension seven and we also construct a class of examples of quaternionic type in varying dimension.  相似文献

We present sequences of linear maps of vector spaces with fixed bases. Each term of a sequence is a linear space of differentials of metric values ascribed to the elements of a simplicial complex determining a triangulation of a manifold. If a sequence is an acyclic complex, then we can construct a manifold invariant using its torsion. We demonstrate this first for three-dimensional manifolds and then construct the part of this program for four-dimensional manifolds pertaining to moves 24.  相似文献
