We designed and developed novel cycloaliphatic liquid‐crystalline (LC) poly(ester amide)s to investigate the effects of nematic LC phases and hydrogen‐bonding interactions on the glass‐transition behavior. Three series of poly(ester amide)s based on commercially important poly(1,4‐cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate) were synthesized with two new cycloaliphatic diamines {3,8‐bis(aminomethyl)‐tricyclo [5.2.1.0.(2,6)]decane (tricyclic) and 1,3‐cyclohexane bismethylene amine (monocyclic)} and a linear counterpart (1,6‐hexamethylene diamine). The compositions of the ester/amide units in the copolymers were varied up to 50% by the adjustment of the amounts of the diol and diamine in the feed. The structures of the polymers were confirmed with NMR and Fourier transform infrared, and their inherent viscosities were measured at 30 °C with an Ubbelohde viscometer. Thermal analysis revealed that the poly(ester amide)s having less than 25 mol % amide linkages were thermotropic and LC, and threadlike nematic phases were observed under a polarizing microscope. The introduction of nematic, LC phases drastically affected the glass‐transition temperatures of the copolymers, and a plot of the composition versus the glass‐transition temperature passed through a maximum for lower amide incorporation, regardless of the structural differences of the amide units (cyclic or linear). This nonlinear Flory–Fox trend was correlated to the cooperative effect of the strong alignment of polymer chains in the nematic phases and intermolecular packing induced by the hydrogen bonding in the poly(ester amide)s. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New hydrogen‐bonded liquid‐crystalline poly(ester amide)s (PEA)s were obtained from 1,4‐terephthaloyl[bis‐(3‐nitro‐N‐anthranilic acid)] (5) or 1,4‐terephthaloyl[bis‐(N‐anthranilic acid)] (6), with or without nitro groups, respectively, through the separate condensation of each with hydroquinone or dihydroxynaphthalene. The dicarboxylic monomers were synthesized from 2‐aminobenzoic acid. The phase behavior of the monomers and polymers were studied with differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction methods. Monomer 5, containing nitro groups, exhibited a smectic liquid‐crystalline phase, whereas the texture of monomer 6 without nitro groups appeared to be nematic. The PEAs containing nitro groups exhibited polymorphism (smectic and nematic), whereas those without nitro groups exhibited only one phase transition (a nematic threaded texture). The changes occurring in the phase behavior of the polymers were explained by the introduction of nitro groups. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel multiblock poly(ester amide)s containing poly(L ‐lactide) and cycloaliphatic amide segments were synthesized from telechelic oligomer of α,ω‐hydroxyl terminated poly(L ‐lactide), 1,3‐cyclohexylbis(methylamine), and sebacoylchloride by the “two‐step” interfacial polycondensation method. The blocky nature of PEAs was established by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The effect of relative content of ester and amide segments on the crystallization nature of PEAs was investigated by WAXD and DSC analyses. PEAs having lower content of PLLA, PEA 1 and PEA 2, showed a crystallization pattern analogous to polyamides, whereas PEA 3, having higher content of PLLA, showed two crystalline phases characterized by polyester and polyamide segments. Random nature of PEAs was observed from single Tg values. Biodegradation studies using the enzyme lipase from Candida Cylindracea showed higher degradation rate for PEA 3 than that for PEA 1 and PEA 2. FTIR, 1H NMR, and DSC analyses of the degraded products indicated the involvement of ester linkages in the degradation process. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Novel biodegradable copolymers derived from succinate, butan‐1,4‐diol, and butan‐1,4‐diamine were synthesized by two‐step polycondensation reactions. The obtained copolymers had a periodical‐sequence structure consisting of ester and amide units, and the melting temperatures of the periodic copolymers increased with an increase in amide content. The crystalline structure of the periodic copolymers differs from that of butylene succinate homopolymer (PBS), and these results suggest that the periodically introduced amide units are included in the crystalline phase forming a novel crystalline structure.

A set of poly[ω‐(4′‐cyano‐4‐biphenyloxy)alkyl‐1‐glycidylether]s were synthesized by the chemical modification of the corresponding poly(ω‐bromoalkyl‐1‐glycidylether)s with the sodium salt of 4‐cyano‐4′‐hydroxybiphenyl. New high‐molecular‐weight side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were obtained with excellent yield and almost quantitative degree of modification. All side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were rubbers soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The characterization by 1H and 13C NMR revealed no changes in the regioregular isotactic microstructure of the starting polymer and the absence of undesirable side reactions such as deshydrobromination. The liquid crystalline behavior was analyzed by DSC and polarized optical microscopy, and mesophase assignments were confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. Polymers that had alkyl spacers with n = 2 and 4 were nematic, those that had spacers with n = 6 and 8 were nematic cybotactic, and those that had longer spacers (n = 10 and 12) were smectic C and showed some crystallization of the side alkyl chains. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fifteen highly regular hydrogen‐bonded, novel thermotropic, aromatic‐aliphatic poly(ester–amide)s (PEAs) were synthesized from aliphatic amido diols by melt polycondensation with dimethyl terephthalate and solution polycondensation with terephthaloyl chloride. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds more or less perpendicular to the main‐chain direction induce the formation and stabilization of liquid crystalline property for these PEAs. The structure of these polymers, even in the mesomorphic phase is dominated by hydrogen bonds between the amide–amide and amide–ester groups in adjacent chains. Aliphatic amido diols were synthesized by the aminolysis of γ‐butyrolactone, δ‐valerolactone and ε‐caprolactone with aliphatic diamines containing a number of methylene groups from two to six in isopropanol medium at room temperature. Effects of polarity of the solvent on solution polymerization and effect of catalyst on trans esterification were studied. These polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, solubility studies, inherent viscosity, DSC, X‐ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy, and TGA. All the melt/solution polycondensed PEAs showed multiple‐phase transitions on heating with second transitions identified as nematic/smectic/spherullitic texture. The mesomorphic properties were studied as a function of their chemical structure by changing alternatively m or n. Odd‐even effect on mesophase transition temperature, isotropization temperature, and crystallinity were studied. The effect of molecular weight and polydispersity on mesophase/isotropization temperature and thermal stability were investigated. It was observed that there exists a competition for crystallinity and liquid crystallinity in these PEAs © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2469–2486, 2000  相似文献

The dehydrogenation of poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene)–polystyrene binary block copolymers obtained by anionic copolymerization with alkyllithium/amine systems was investigated for the first time. The dehydrogenation of the poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) block, which was composed of 1,2‐cyclohexadiene (1,2‐CHD) and 1,4‐cyclohexadiene (1,4‐CHD) units, was strongly affected by the polymer chain structure. The existence of 1,2‐CHD units prevented the dehydrogenation of the poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) block in the binary block copolymer. The rate of dehydrogenation was fast on a long sequence of 1,4‐CHD units, whereas it was relatively slow for 1,2‐CHD/1,4‐CHD (≈1/1) unit sequences. The bonding of the polystyrene block to the polymer chain effectively improved not only the rate of dehydrogenation of a long sequence of 1,4‐CHD units but also that of the polymer chain with a high content of 1,2‐CHD units. The dehydrogenation of a poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) block containing a small number of 1,2‐CHD units progressed via step‐by‐step reactions. The dehydrogenation of a long sequence of 1,4‐CHD units proceeded as the first step. Subsequently, in the second step, the 1,2‐CHD/1,4‐CHD (≈1/1) unit sequences remaining in the polymer chain were dehydrogenated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copolymers of 2‐methoxy‐5‐2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene (MEH‐PV) and 2,3‐diphenyl‐5‐octyl‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene were prepared via the Gilch route with their chain compositions and the reactivity ratios of the monomers estimated by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results indicated that the copolymers tended to form an alternative copolymer as the feed ratio of the monomers closed to one‐half. When an individual copolymer solution in tetrahydrofuran was spun‐cast to form a film, the MEH‐PV units were able to attract the like units from the adjacent chains. As a result, the ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrum of the alternative copolymer in film form was broader than the spectra of those with different compositions. The photoluminescence spectra of the copolymers in film form exhibited the characteristic shoulder of poly(2‐methoxy‐5‐2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene), even though the content of MEH‐PV units was not great enough for the formation of repeat units in sequence. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble alternating poly(fluorene)‐based copolymers containing electron‐transporting 1,3,4‐oxadiazole (OXD) and hole‐transporting carbazole pendants attached to the C‐9 position of fluorene units by long alkyl spacers were synthesized. These copolymers possess mesogenic and nonmesogenic pendants attached to a rigid mesogenic poly(fluorene) (PF) backbone. All these polymers exhibit glass‐forming liquid crystalline properties, including the nematic and smectic A (SmA) phases, and reveal much wider mesophasic temperature ranges than that of PF. The thermal properties and mesomorphism of these conjugated polymers are mainly affected by the nature of these pendants, and thus the mesophasic temperature ranges and glass‐forming properties are greatly enhanced by introducing the OXD pendants. In addition, the tendencies of crystallization and aggregation of PF are also suppressed by introducing the OXD pendants. A single layer device with P4 as an emitter shows a turn‐on voltage of 5 V and a bright luminescence of 2694 cd/m2 at 11 V with a power efficiency of 1.28 cd/A at 100 mA/cm2. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polystyrene (PS), and poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CuBr/1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as a catalyst system. First, the bromine‐terminated diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PEO‐PS‐Br) was prepared by the ATRP of styrene initiated with the macro‐initiator PEO‐Br, which was obtained from the esterification of PEO and 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. An azobenzene‐containing block of PMMAZO with different molecular weights was then introduced into the diblock copolymer by a second ATRP to synthesize the novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PEO‐PS‐PMMAZO). These block copolymers were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). Their thermotropic phase behaviors were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). These triblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase over a relatively wide temperature range. At the same time, the photoresponsive properties of these triblock copolymers in chloroform solution were preliminarily studied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid‐crystalline, segmented polyurethanes with methoxy–biphenyl mesogens pendant on the chain extender were synthesized by the conventional prepolymer technique and esterification reaction. Two, side‐chain, liquid‐crystalline (SCLC) polyurethanes with mesogens having spacers of six and eight methylene units were prepared. The structures of the mesogenic units and SCLC polyurethanes were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. Polymer properties were also examined by solubility tests, water uptakes, and inherent viscosity measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the transition temperature of the isotropic to the liquid‐crystalline phase decreased with increasing spacer length. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) studies revealed the existence of liquid‐crystalline phases for both SCLC polyurethanes. Polarized optical microscopic investigations further confirmed the thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviors and nematic mesophases of both samples. Thermogravimetric analysis displayed better thermal stabilities for both SCLC polymers and indicated that the presence of mesogenic side chains may increase the thermal stability of segmented polyurethanes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have designed and synthesized rod–coil–rod triblock copolymers of controlled molecular weight by two‐step nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization, where the rod part consists of “mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer” (MJLCP). The MJLCP segment examined in our studies is poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) while the coil part is polyisoprene (PI). Characterization of the triblock copolymers by GPC, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, TGA, DSC confirmed that the triblock copolymers were comprised of microphase‐separated low Tg amorphous PI and high Tg PMPCS blocks. Analysis of POM and 1D, 2D‐WAXD demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed nematic liquid crystal phase. Morphological studies using TEM indicated the sample formed lamellar structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 5949–5956, 2007  相似文献

A bromine capped star‐shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (S‐PMMA‐Br) was synthesized with CuBr/sparteine/PT‐Br as a catalyst and initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate (MMA) according to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, with S‐PMMA‐Br as a macroinitiator, a series of new liquid crystal rod–coil star block copolymers with different molecular weights and low polydispersity were obtained by this method. The block architecture {coil‐conformation of the MMA segment and rigid‐rod conformation of 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene segment} of the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of these copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. We found that the liquid‐crystalline behavior depends on the molecular weight of the rigid segment; only the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers with each arm's Mn,GPC of the rigid block beyond 0.91 × 104 g/mol could form liquid‐crystalline phases above the glass‐transition temperature of the rigid block. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel series of side‐chain liquid crystalline copolymers, i.e. poly‐[1‐({(4‐methoxyazobenzene‐4′‐oxy)alkyl}thio)‐2.3‐epoxypropane]s, were synthesised in which the number of methylene units in the alkyl group of the side chain varies from 3 to 6. The structures of compounds obtained were characterised by elemental analysis and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Thermal properties were investigated using polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffraction analysis. The synthesised thiols and corresponding polyepichlorohydrin‐based copolymers exhibited thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour and nematic phases with schlieren textures. The thiols have lower transition temperatures than the corresponding copolymers. In addition, the degree of substitution of the copolymers synthesised increased with an increase in number of methylenes in the side chain. The phase transition temperatures increased and the mesomorphic temperature ranges widened with the increasing degree of substitution of the copolymers.  相似文献

A series of side‐chain liquid‐crystalline (LC) homopolymers of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with different degrees of polymerization were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which were prepared with a wide range of number‐average molecular weights from 5.1 × 103 to 20.6 × 103 with narrow polydispersities of around 1.17. Thermal investigation showed that the homopolymers exhibit two mesophases, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase, and the phase‐transition temperatures of the homopolymers increase clearly with increasing molecular weights. A series of novel LC coil triblock copolymers with narrow polydispersities was synthesized by ATRP, and their thermotropic phase behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The LC coil triblocks were designed to have an LC conformation of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with a wide range of molecular weights from 3.5 × 103 to 1.7 × 104 and the coil conformation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (number‐average molecular weight: 6000 or 12,000) segment. Their characterization was investigated with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and gel permeation chromatography. Triblock copolymers exhibited a crystalline phase, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase. The phase‐transition temperatures from the smectic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased, and the crystallization of PEG depressed with increasing molecular weight of the LC block. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photochromic liquid‐crystalline copolymers consisting of a photochromic monomeric unit containing both a spironaphthoxazine group and an undecamethylene spacer, and a liquid‐crystalline monomeric unit containing both a cholesteryl group and a decamethylene spacer were prepared to investigate the effect of the thermal properties of the photochromic monomeric unit on the mesomorphic order of the side chain of the related copolymers. The photochromic liquid‐crystalline copolymers containing a photochromic liquid‐crystalline monomeric unit showed only a smectic phase. On the other hand, the photochromic liquid‐crystalline copolymers containing a photochromic non‐liquid‐crystalline monomeric unit showed a chiral nematic phase (cholesteric phase). The photochromic chiral nematic liquid‐crystalline copolymer containing 14 mol % photochromic monomeric unit reflected visible light around 104 °C. To lower the temperature range of reflection of visible light, cholesteryl oleyl carbonate was used as a chiral nematic plasticizer for the photochromic chiral liquid‐crystalline polymer systems. Photo‐induced pitch change of the mixture by means of UV irradiation was investigated and it was concluded that the pitch change observed under UV irradiation was mainly induced by thermal effect in the case of our system. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Copolymers of a liquid crystalline monomer, 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS), with St and MMA were prepared by free radical polymerization at low conversion in chlorobenzene with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The copolymers of poly(MPCS‐co‐St) and poly(MPCS‐co‐MMA) were characterized by 1H NMR and GPC. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined by using the extended Kelen–Tudos (EKT) method. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained from the possibility statistics and monomer reactivity ratios. The influence of MPCS content in copolymers on the glass transition temperatures of copolymers was investigated by DSC. The thermal stabilities of the two copolymer systems increased with an increase of the molar fraction of MPCS in the copolymers. The liquid crystalline behavior of the copolymers was also investigated using DSC and POM. The results revealed that the copolymers with high MPCS molar contents exhibited liquid crystalline behaviors. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Half titanocenes (CpCH2CH2O)TiCl2 (1), (CpCH2CH2OCH3)TiCl3 (2), and CpTiCl3 (3), activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO) were tested in copolymerization of ethylene with internal olefins such as cyclopentene. All the catalysts were able to give incorporation of cyclopentene in polyethylene matrix. 13C NMR analysis of obtained copolymers showed that the catalytic systems have low regiospecificity. In fact, in ethylene–cyclopentene copolymers, cyclic olefin inserts with both 1,2 and 1,3‐enchainment. X‐ray powder diffraction analysis of these copolymers confirmed that 1,2 inserted cyclopentene units are excluded from crystalline phase, whereas 1,3‐cyclopentene units are included, giving rise to expansion of unit cell of crystalline polyethylene. Titanium‐based catalysts were investigated also in the copolymerization of ethylene with E and Z‐2‐butene. Only complex (1) was able to give copolymers and 13C NMR analysis of products showed 2‐3, 1‐3, and 1‐2 insertion of 2‐butene. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis displayed that ethylene–cyclopentene, as well as ethylene‐2‐butene, copolymers are crystalline and their melting point decreases by increasing the comonomer content. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, a new series of semiflexible liquid crystalline (LC) polyesters and poly(ester‐amide)s were synthesized and characterized. Polymers based on 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid (4‐HBA), 6‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoic acid (HNA), suberic acid (SUA), and sebacic acid (SEA) were modified with hydroquinone (HQ) and different concentrations of 4‐acetamidophenol (AP) to obtain a polyester and two poly(ester‐amide)s, respectively. All polymers were successfully prepared using conventional melt‐condensation techniques. The polymers were characterized by inherent viscosity measurements, SEC, hot‐stage polarizing microscopy, DSC, and TGA. The mechanical behavior was investigated using DMTA and tensile testing. All linear polymers have Tgs in the range of 50–80 °C and melt between 120 and 150 °C. Our polymers display good thermooxidative stabilities (5% wt loss at ~ 400 °C) and exhibit homogeneous nematic melt behavior over a wide temperature range (ΔN ~ 250 °C). The liquid crystal phase was lost when high concentrations of nonlinear monomers such as 3‐HBA (>27 mol %) and resorcinol (RC) (>23 mol %) were incorporated. The LC polyester based on 4‐HBA/HNA/HQ/SUA/SEA could easily be processed into good quality films and fibers. The films display good mechanical properties (E′ ~ 4 GPa) and high toughness, that is, ~ 15% elongation at break, at room temperature. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
