Flow and thermal field in nanofluid is analyzed using single phase thermal dispersion model proposed by Xuan and Roetzel [Y. Xuan, W. Roetzel, Conceptions for heat transfer correlation of nanofluids, Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 43 (2000) 3701–3707]. The non-dimensional form of the transport equations involving the thermal dispersion effect is solved numerically using semi-explicit finite volume solver in a collocated grid. Heat transfer augmentation for copper–water nanofluid is estimated in a thermally driven two-dimensional cavity. The thermo-physical properties of nanofluid are calculated involving contributions due to the base fluid and nanoparticles. The flow and heat transfer process in the cavity is analyzed using different thermo-physical models for the nanofluid available in literature. The influence of controlling parameters on convective recirculation and heat transfer augmentation induced in buoyancy driven cavity is estimated in detail. The controlling parameters considered for this study are Grashof number (103 < Gr < 105), solid volume fraction (0 < ? < 0.2) and empirical shape factor (0.5 < n < 6). Simulations carried out with various thermo-physical models of the nanofluid show significant influence on thermal boundary layer thickness when the model incorporates the contribution of nanoparticles in the density as well as viscosity of nanofluid. Simulations incorporating the thermal dispersion model show increment in local thermal conductivity at locations with maximum velocity. The suspended particles increase the surface area and the heat transfer capacity of the fluid. As solid volume fraction increases, the effect is more pronounced. The average Nusselt number from the hot wall increases with the solid volume fraction. The boundary surface of nanoparticles and their chaotic movement greatly enhances the fluid heat conduction contribution. Considerable improvement in thermal conductivity is observed as a result of increase in the shape factor.  相似文献

The steady laminar boundary layer flow over a permeable flat plate in a uniform free stream, with the bottom surface of the plate is heated by convection from a hot fluid is considered. Similarity solutions for the flow and thermal fields are possible if the mass transpiration rate at the surface and the convective heat transfer from the hot fluid on the lower surface of the plate vary like x−1/2, where x is the distance from the leading edge of the solid surface. The governing partial differential equations are first transformed into ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically. The effects of the governing parameters on the flow and thermal fields are thoroughly examined and discussed.  相似文献

Lie group method is investigated for solving the problem of heat transfer in an unsteady, three-dimensional, laminar, boundary-layer flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid over inclined permeable surface embedded in porous medium in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and heat generation/absorption effects. A uniform magnetic field is applied in the y-direction and a generalized flow model is presented to include the effects of the macroscopic viscous term and the microscopic permeability of porous medium. The infinitesimal generators accepted by the equations are calculated and the extension of the Lie algebra for the problem is also presented. The restrictions imposed by the boundary conditions on the generators are calculated. The investigation of the three-independent-variable partial differential equations is converted into a two-independent-variable system by using one subgroup of the general group. The resulting equations are solved numerically with the perturbation solution for various times. Velocity, temperature and pressure profiles, surface shear stresses, and wall-heat transfer rate are discussed for various values of Prandtl number, Hartmann number, Darcy number, heat generation/absorption coefficient, and surface mass-transfer coefficient.  相似文献

The natural convection boundary-layer flow on a solid verticalsurface with heat generated within the boundary layer at a rateproportional to (TT)p (p 1) is considered. The surfaceis held at the ambient temperature T except near the leadingedge where it is held at a temperature above ambient. The behaviourof the flow as it develops from the leading edge is examinedand is seen to become independent of the initial heat input;however, it does depend strongly on the exponent p. For 1 p 2, the local heating eventually dominates at large distancesand there is a convective flow driven by this mechanism. Forp 4, the local heating does not have a significant effect, the fluid temperature remains relatively small throughout andthe heat transfer dies out through a wall jet flow. For 2 <p < 4, the local heating has a significant effect at relativelysmall distances, with a thermal runaway developing at a finitedistance along the surface.  相似文献

The steady laminar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary-layer flow past a wedge with constant surface heat flux immersed in an incompressible micropolar fluid in the presence of a variable magnetic field is investigated in this paper. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity variables, and then they are solved numerically by means of an implicit finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical results show that micropolar fluids display drag reduction and consequently reduce the heat transfer rate at the surface, compared to the Newtonian fluids. The opposite trends are observed for the effects of the magnetic field on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics.  相似文献

A mathematical model of fluid flow across a rod bundle with volumetric heat generation has been built. The rods are heated with volumetric internal heat generation. To construct the model, a volume average technique (VAT) has been applied to momentum and energy transport equations for a fluid and a solid phase to develop a specific form of porous media flow equations. The model equations have been solved with a semi-analytical Galerkin method. The detailed velocity and temperature fields in the fluid flow and the solid structure have been obtained. Using the solution fields, a whole-section drag coefficient Cd and a whole-section Nusselt number Nu have also been calculated. To validate the developed solution procedure, the results have been compared to the results of a finite volume method. The comparison shows an excellent agreement. The present results demonstrate that the selected Galerkin approach is capable of performing calculations of heat transfer in a cross-flow where thermal conductivity and internal heat generation in a solid structure has to be taken into account. Although the Galerkin method has limited applicability in complex geometries, its highly accurate solutions are an important benchmark on which other numerical results can be tested.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, we explore the three-dimensional boundary-layer flow over an exponentially stretching surface in two parallel ways. Constitutive equations of a second-grade fluid are used. Instead of classical Fourier’s law, Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model is employed for the formulation of the energy equation. This model can predict the effects of thermal relaxation time on the boundary layer. The resulting partial differential equations are reduced into ordinary differential equations by similarity transformations. Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is employed to solve the non-linear problem. Physical impact of emerging parameters on the momentum and thermal boundary-layer thickness are studied.  相似文献

A boundary-layer model is described for the two-dimensional nonlinear transient thermal convection heat and mass transfer in an optically-thick fluid in a Darcian porous medium adjacent to an impulsively started vertical surface, in the presence of significant thermal radiation and buoyancy forces in an (X1,Y1,t1) coordinate system. An algebraic approximation is employed to simplify the integro-differential equation of radiative transfer for unidirectional flux normal to the plate into the boundary-layer regime, by incorporating this flux term in the energy conservation equation. The conservation equations are non-dimensionalized into an (X,Y,T) coordinate system and solved using the Network Simulation Method (NSM), a robust numerical technique which demonstrates high efficiency and accuracy. The transient variation of non-dimensional streamwise velocity component (u) and temperature (T) and concentration (C) functions is computed for various selected values of Stark number (radiation–conduction interaction parameter) and Darcy number. Transient velocity (u) and steady-state local skin friction (τX) are also studied for various thermal Grashof number (Gr), species Grashof number (Gm), Schmidt number (Sc) and Stark number (N) values. These computations for the infinite permeability case (Da  ∞) are compared with previous finite difference solutions [Prasad et al. Int J Therm Sci 2007;46(12):1251–8] and shown to be in excellent agreement. An increase in Darcy number is seen to accelerate the flow and boost velocity. A decrease in Stark number (corresponding to an increase in thermal radiation heat transfer contribution) is shown to increase the velocity values. Temperature function is observed to fall in value with a rise in Da and increase with decrease in N (corresponding to an increase in thermal radiation heat transfer contribution). Applications of the study include rocket combustion chambers, astrophysical flows, spacecraft thermal fluid dynamics in debris-laden environments (cosmic dust), heat transfer in forest fire spread, geochemical contamination and ceramic materials processing.  相似文献

In order to explore the capability of a solid–liquid phase change material (PCM) for cooling electronic or heat storage applications, melting of a PCM in a vertical rectangular enclosure was studied. Three protruding generating heat sources are attached on one of the vertical walls of the enclosure, and generating heat at a constant and uniform volumetric rate. The horizontal walls are adiabatic. The power generated in heat sources is dissipated in PCM (n-eicosane with the melting temperature, Tm = 36 °C) that filled the rectangular enclosure. The advantage of using PCM is that it is able to absorb high amount of heat generated by heat sources due to its relatively high energy density. To investigate the thermal behaviour and thermal performance of the proposed system, a mathematical model based on the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations was developed. The governing equations are next discretised using a control volume approach in a staggered mesh and a pressure correction equation method is employed for the pressure–velocity coupling. The PCM energy equation is solved using the enthalpy method. The solid regions (wall and heat sources) are treated as fluid regions with infinite viscosity and the thermal coupling between solid and fluid regions is taken into account using the harmonic mean of the thermal conductivity method. The dimensionless independent parameters that govern the thermal behaviour of the system were next identified. After validating the proposed mathematical model against experimental data, a numerical investigation was next conducted in order to examine the thermal behaviour of the system by analyzing the flow structure and the heat transfer during the melting process, for a given values of governing parameters.  相似文献

The propagation of shock waves in a rotational axisymmetric dusty gas with heat conduction and radiation heat flux, which has a variable azimuthally fluid velocity together with a variable axial fluid velocity, is investigated. The dusty gas is assumed to be a mixture of non-ideal (or perfect) gas and small solid particles, in which solid particles are continuously distributed. It is assumed that the equilibrium flow-condition is maintained and variable energy input is continuously supplied by the piston (or inner expanding surface). The fluid velocities in the ambient medium are assume to be vary and obey power laws. The density of the ambient medium is assumed to be constant, the heat conduction is express in terms of Fourier’s law and the radiation is considered to be of the diffusion type for an optically thick grey gas model. The thermal conductivity K and the absorption coefficient αR are assumed to vary with temperature and density. In order to obtain the similarity solutions the angular velocity of the ambient medium is assume to be decreasing as the distance from the axis increases. The effects of the variation of the heat transfer parameter and non-idealness of the gas in the mixture are investigated. The effects of an increase in (i) the mass concentration of solid particles in the mixture and (ii) the ratio of the density of solid particles to the initial density of the gas on the flow variables are also investigated.  相似文献

The free convection boundary-layer flow on a vertical surface in a porous medium with local heat generation proportional to (TT)p, where T is the local temperature and T is the ambient temperature, is considered when the surface is thermally insulated. The way in which the flow develops from the leading edge is seen to depend critically on the exponent p. For p ≤ 2 there is a boundary-layer flow for all x > 0, where x measures distance from the leading edge, with the internal heating having a significant effect at large x. For p ≥ 5 there is also a boundary-layer flow to large x but now the internal heating has an increasingly weaker effect as x increases. For 2 < p <  5 the boundary-layer solution breaks down at a finite x, with a singularity developing leading to thermal runaway at a finite distance along the surface.  相似文献

Steady state two-dimensional mixed convection in a lid-driven square cavity filled with Cu  –water nanofluid is investigated numerically in the presence of internal heat generation. In the present investigation, bottom wall is uniformly and non-uniformly heated while two vertical walls are fixed and they are thermally insulated. The top wall is moving from left to right at a constant speed. The governing equations are normalized and solved numerically with boundary conditions by finite volume approach using third order accurate upwinding scheme (deferred QUICK). Effects of the pertinent physical parameters are investigated in terms of the flow and temperature fields, as well as Nusselt number distributions. The presented results show that the solid volume fraction plays a significant role on the flow and thermal fields and the Nusselt number distributions for different flow configurations. It is found that Richardson number strongly affect the fluid flow and heat transfer in the cavity. For Ri<1Ri<1, the forced convection becomes dominant in the entire cavity, the natural convection relatively weak.

The transient behaviour of a packed column is considered. The column, uniformly packed on a macroscopic scale, is multi-structured on the microscopic level: the solid phase consists of particles, which may differ in incidence, shape or size, and other relevant physical properties. Transport in the fluid phase happens by convective flow and longitudinal diffusion. The adsorptionrate in the column is determined by the combined effects ofmass transfer through a thin liquid film around the particles, diffusion into the particles and first-order loss in the particles. An analytical solution to the problem is given in the formof an infinite integral. The solution method is worked outin detail for three special cases, each with only one typeof particle in the solid phase, in the shape of a sphere, ora finite cylinder, or a rectangular parallelepiped. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of natural convection in a micropolar fluid flowing along a vertical slender hollow circular cylinder with conduction effects. The nonlinear formulation governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are first cast into dimensionless forms by a local non-similar transformation. The resulting equations are then solved using the cubic spline collocation method and the finite difference scheme. This study investigates the effects of the conjugate heat transfer parameter, the micropolar parameter, and the Prandtl number on the flow and the thermal fields. The conjugate heat transfer parameter reduces the solid–liquid interfacial temperature, the skin friction factor and the local heat transfer rate. The effect of wall conduction on the local heat transfer rate, interfacial temperature and skin friction factor is found to be more pronounced in a system with a greater Prandtl number. Moreover, the current results are comparing with Newtonian fluid to obtain the important results of the heat transfer and flow characteristics on micropolar fluids. It shows that an increase in the interfacial temperature, a reduction in the skin friction factor, and a reduction in the local heat transfer rate are identified in the current micropolar fluid case.  相似文献

In the present investigation we have analyzed the boundary layer flow of a Jeffrey fluid over an exponentially stretching surface. The effects of thermal radiation are carried out for two cases of heat transfer analysis known as (1) Prescribed exponential order surface temperature (PEST) and (2) Prescribed exponential order heat flux (PEHF). The highly nonlinear coupled partial differential equations of Jeffrey fluid flow along with the energy equation are simplified by using similarity transformation techniques based on boundary layer assumptions. The reduced similarity equations are then solved analytically by the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The convergence of the HAM series solution is obtained by plotting (h/2p)\hbar-curves for velocity and temperature. The effects of physical parameters on the velocity and temperature profiles are examined by plotting graphs.  相似文献

Lattice Boltzmann simulation of convective heat transfer of non-Newtonian fluids in an impeller stirred tank is performed. The curved and moving boundary methods combined with the unknown-index algorithm are used to solve the flow and thermal fields induced in a cold tank by an oscillating hot impeller. For a given maximum radius of the blades, the simulation results show that a rectangular impeller of large aspect ratio induces stronger heat transfer effect on the tank walls than the small aspect ratio. This is because the latter would cause worse field synergy than the former, i.e. the induced local velocities of fluid are mostly perpendicular to the temperature gradients. The convection effects on the tank walls are also improved as the oscillation amplitude of impeller increases until the swept areas of impeller are close to whole azimuth of the tank, i.e., oscillation amplitude of 90°. The maximum Nusselt number on the tank walls for power-law fluid flows of n = 0.7, 1 and 1.5 occurs at oscillation amplitude of 75°. Finally, it is found that the heat transfer effect on the tank walls is reduced as the power-law index of fluid increases.  相似文献

The peristaltic flow of a Jeffrey fluid in a vertical porous stratum with heat transfer is studied under long wavelength and low Reynolds number assumptions. The nonlinear governing equations are solved using perturbation technique. The expressions for velocity, temperature and the pressure rise per one wave length are determined. The effects of different parameters on the velocity, the temperature and the pumping characteristics are discussed. It is observed that the effects of the Jeffrey number λ1, the Grashof number Gr, the perturbation parameter N = EcPr, and the peristaltic wall deformation parameter ϕ are the strongest on the trapping bolus phenomenon. The results obtained for the flow and heat transfer characteristics reveal many interesting behaviors that warrant further study on the non-Newtonian fluid phenomena, especially the shear-thinning phenomena. Shear-thinning reduces the wall shear stress.  相似文献

A comprehensive numerical investigation on the natural convection in a rectangular enclosure is presented. The flow is induced due to the constant partial heating at lower half of the left vertical wall and partial cooling at upper half of the right vertical wall along with rest walls are adiabatic. In this investigation the Special attention is given to understand the effect of aspect ratio and heat source intensity i.e. Rayleigh number, Ra, on the fluid flow configuration as well as on the local and average heat transfer rates. The range of Rayleigh (Ra) and aspect ratio (A) is taken [103, 106] and [0.5, 4] respectively. The results are presented in terms of stream function (ψ), temperature (θ) and heat transfer rates (local Nusselt numbers NuL, and average Nusselt numbers Nu). The numerical experiments show that increasing of Ra implies the enhancement of thermal buoyancy force, which in turn increases the thermal convection in the cavity. As a result, the local as well as average heat transfer rate is expected to increase. The local transfer rate (NuL) is increases in the small region near the left vertical wall of the left wall of the cavity and after that it is decreases in the middle portion of heated region. And, it start to increase near to the middle point of left wall. It is also observed that the local heat transfer is increases as increases the aspect ratio. The average heat transfer rate (Nu) is increases as the aspect ratio A increases from 0.5 to 1 and beyond that it is decreases smoothly. It is also found that the heat transfer rate attains its maximum value at aspect ratio one.  相似文献
