Recently P.H. Dederichs and R. Zeller (1973) have developed a formal theory of the bounds of odd order n for the effective elastic moduli of linearly elastic, disordered materials. The bounds are established by use of statistical information given in terms of correlation functions up to order n (= 1, 3, 5,…). This theory is extended to include the bounds of even order n. It is indicated how these bounds can be made optimum under the given statistical information. The results for bounds of even and odd order are obtained in forms which resemble Neumann series, containing multiple integrals up to order (n?1). These integrals can be calculated for certain materials which are classified in terms of a gradual statistical homogeneity, isotropy and disorder. Materials which possess these properties up to the correlation functions of nth order are called overall grade n materials. The optimum bounds for overall grade 2 and grade 3 materials are given explicitly. Optimum bounds for materials which are of grade ∞ in homogeneity and isotropy (i.e. (statistically) perfectly homogeneous and isotropic) and, at the same time, disordered of grade 2 or 3 are also derived. Those for grade 2 in disorder are the Z. Hashin and S. Shtrikman's (1963) bounds. Those for grade 3 are the narrowest, explicit bounds so far derived for random elastic materials. They contain within themselves the so-called self-consistent elastic moduli.  相似文献

The paper deals with the effective linear elastic behaviour of random media subjected to inhomogeneous mean fields. The effective constitutive laws are known to be non-local. Therefore, the effective elastic moduli show dispersion, i.e1 they depend on the “wave vector” k of the mean field. In this paper the well-known Hashin-Shtrikman bounds (1962) for the Lamé parameters of isotropic multi-phase mixtures are generalized to inhomogeneous mean fields k ≠ 0. The bounds involve two-point correlations of random elastic moduli. In the limit k → ∞ the bounds converge to the exact result. The interest is focussed on composites with cell structures and on binary mixtures. To illustrate the results, numerical evaluations are carried out for a binary cell material composed of nearly spherical grains of equal size.  相似文献

Composites made from two linear isotropic elastic materials are subjected to a uniform hydrostatic stress. It is assumed that only the volume fraction of each elastic material is known. Lower bounds on all rth moments of the hydrostatic stress field inside each phase are obtained for r?2. A lower bound on the maximum value of the hydrostatic stress field is also obtained. These bounds are given by explicit formulas depending on the volume fractions of the constituent materials and their elastic moduli. All of these bounds are shown to be the best possible as they are attained by the hydrostatic stress field inside the Hashin-Shtrikman coated sphere assemblage. The bounds provide a new opportunity for the assessment of load transfer between macroscopic and microscopic scales for statistically defined microstructures.  相似文献

Bounds on the Effective Anisotropic Elastic Constants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Hill [12] showed that it was possible to construct bounds on the effective isotropic elastic coefficients of a material with triclinic or greater symmetry. Hill noted that the triclinic symmetry coefficients appearing in the bounds could be specialized to those of a greater symmetry, yielding the effective isotropic elastic coefficients for a material with any elastic symmetry. It is shown here that it is possible to construct bounds on the effective elastic constants of a material with any anisotropic elastic symmetry in terms of triclinic symmetry elastic coefficients. Similarly, it is then possible to specialize the triclinic symmetry coefficients appearing in the bounds to those of a greater symmetry. Specific bounds are given for the effective elastic coefficients of cubic, hexagonal, tetragonal and trigonal symmetries in terms of the elastic coefficients of triclinic symmetry. These results are obtained by combining the approach of Hill [12] with a representation of the stress-strain relations due, in principle, to Kelvin [25,26] but recast in the structure of contemporary linear algebra. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Our earlier derived bounds on the elastic moduli of two-dimensional random polycrystals [1, 2] involve a geometric restriction through an assumption on the form of an isotropic eight-rank tensor. The general form of the tensor is used in this study to reconstruct the bounds, which are expected to approach the scatter range for the moduli of the irregular aggregate.  相似文献

Weshow in detail how the McCoy bounds on the effective shear modulus of a statistically isotropic composite, can be simplified and expressed in terms of the volume fraction, f1, and two geometric parameters. ζ1 and η1. We simplify Silnutzer's bounds on the effective elastic moduli of fibre-reinforced composites and find they can be expressed in terms f1and two geometric parameters, ζ'1 and η'1. The parameter ζ'1 also determines bounds on the transport and optical constants of such composites. Also, the Elsayed-McCoy bounds on the transport properties of fibre-reinforced, symmetric-cell materials are shown to depend on three geometric parameters.  相似文献

This paper presents new bounds for heterogeneous plates which are similar to the well-known Hashin–Shtrikman bounds, but take into account plate boundary conditions. The Hashin–Shtrikman variational principle is used with a self-adjoint Green-operator with traction-free boundary conditions proposed by the authors. This variational formulation enables to derive lower and upper bounds for the effective in-plane and out-of-plane elastic properties of the plate. Two applications of the general theory are considered: first, in-plane invariant polarization fields are used to recover the “first-order” bounds proposed by Kolpakov [Kolpakov, A.G., 1999. Variational principles for stiffnesses of a non-homogeneous plate. J. Meth. Phys. Solids 47, 2075–2092] for general heterogeneous plates; next, “second-order bounds” for n-phase plates whose constituents are statistically homogeneous in the in-plane directions are obtained. The results related to a two-phase material made of elastic isotropic materials are shown. The “second-order” bounds for the plate elastic properties are compared with the plate properties of homogeneous plates made of materials having an elasticity tensor computed from “second-order” Hashin–Shtrikman bounds in an infinite domain.  相似文献

Using the spherical and deviator decomposition of the polarization and strain tensors, we present a general algorithm for the calculation of variational bounds of dimension d for any type of anisotropic linear elastic composite as a function of the properties of the comparison body. This procedure is applied in order to obtain analytical expressions of bounds for multiphase, linear elastic composites with cubic symmetry where the geometric shapes of the inclusions are arbitrary. For the validation, it can be proved that for the isotropic particular case, the bounds coincide with those recently reported by Gibiansky and Sigmund. On the other hand, based on this general procedure some, classical bounds reported by Hashin for transversely isotropic composites, are reproduced. Numerical calculations and some comparisons with other models and experimental data are shown.  相似文献

In connection with the extensive use of various kinds of inhomogeneous materials (glass, carbon and boron reinforced plastics, cermets, concrete, reinforced materials, etc.) in technology, there arises a need to calculate the elastic properties of such systems. Here in each case it is necessary to work out specific methods for finding both elastic fields and effective moduli. Since, as a rule, such methods do not take into account the character of distribution of inhomogeneities in space, which is reflected on the form of the central moment functions [1], they can be referred to a single class and, consequently, can be obtained by a common method [2], In the given paper, by means of the method of solution of stochastic problems for microinhomogeneous solid bodies proposed in the work of the author [2], we find elastic fields and effective moduli in an arbitrary approximation. Depending on the choice of parameters, the latter form bounds within which there lie the exact values of the effective moduli. It is shown that the conditions used earlier for finding these parameters [3] are not the best ones. The effective elastic moduli of an inhomogeneous medium are calculated, and bounds, narrower than the bounds formed in [3], are found for them.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhniki, No. 5, pp. 144–150, September–October, 1973.  相似文献

Explicit bounds on the elastic moduli of completely random planar polycrystals, the shape and crystalline orientations of the constituent grains of which are uncorrelated, are derived and calculated for a number of crystals of general two-dimensional anisotropy. The bounds on the elastic two-dimensional bulk modulus happen to coincide with the simple third order (in anisotropy contrast) bounds for the subclass of idealistic circular cell polycrystals. The bounds on the shear modulus are close to the much simpler bounds for circular cell polycrystals, which approximate aggregates of equiaxed grains.  相似文献

A new method for deriving rigorous bounds on the effective elastic constants of a composite material is presented and used to derive a number of known as well as some new bounds. The new approach is based on a presentation of those constants as a sum of simple poles. The locations and strengths of the poles are treated as variational parameters, while different kinds of available information are translated into constraints on these parameters. Our new results include an extension of the range of validity of the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds to the case of composites made of isotropic materials but with an arbitrary microgeometry. We also use information on the effective elastic constants of one composite in order to obtain improved bounds on the effective elastic constants of another composite with the same or a similar microgeometry.  相似文献

Abstract

General bounds on the total displacements of structures subjected to any dynamic loading process are developed for an elastic perfectly plastic material. These bounds are subsequently extended to linear kinematic hardening materials. Previously developed bounds for the dynamics of impulsively loaded structures are recognized to be particular cases of the present formulation. A simple example indicates that the proposed technique is relatively easy to apply for numerical computations  相似文献

A new model is put forward to bound the effective elastic moduli of composites with ellipsoidal inclusions. In the present paper, transition layer for each ellipsoidal inclusion is introduced to make the trial displacement field for the upper bound and the trial stress field for the lower bound satisfy the continuous interface conditions which are absolutely necessary for the application of variational principles. According to the principles of minimum potential energy and minimum complementary energy, the upper and lower bounds on the effective elastic moduli of composites with ellipsoidal inclusions are rigorously derived. The effects of the distribution and geometric parameters of ellipsoidal inclusions on the bounds of the effective elastic moduli are analyzed in details. The present upper and lower bounds are still finite when the bulk and shear moduli of ellipsoidal inclusions tend to infinity and zero, respectively. It should be mentioned that the present method is simple and needs not calculate the complex integrals of multi-point correlation functions. Meanwhile, the present paper provides an entirely different way to bound the effective elastic moduli of composites with ellipsoidal inclusions, which can be developed to obtain a series of bounds by taking different trial displacement and stress fields.  相似文献

A variational formulation employing the minimum potential and complementary energy principles is used to derive a micromechanics-based nonlocal constitutive equation for random linear elastic composite materials, relating ensemble averages of stress and strain in the most general situation when mean fields vary spatially. All information contained in the energy principles is retained; we employ stress polarization trial fields utilizing one-point statistics so that the resulting nonlocal constitutive equation incorporates up through three-point statistics. The variational structure is developed first for arbitrary heterogeneous linear elastic materials, then for randomly inhomogeneous materials, then for general n-phase composite materials, and finally for two-phase composite materials, in which case explicit variational upper and lower bounds on the nonlocal effective modulus tensor operator are derived. For statistically uniform infinite-body composites, these bounds are determined even more explicitly in Fourier transform space. We evaluate these in detail in an example case: longitudinal shear of an aligned fiber or void composite. We determine the full permissible ranges of the terms involving two- and three-point statistics in these bounds, and thereby exhibit explicit results that encompass arbitrary isotropic in-plane phase distributions; we also develop a nonlocal “Milton parameter”, the variation of whose eigenvalues throughout the interval [0, 1] describes the full permissible range of the three-point term. Example plots of the new bounds show them to provide substantial improvement over the (two-point) Hashin–Shtrikman bounds on the nonlocal operator tensor, for all permissible values of the two- and three-point parameters. We next discuss further applications of the general nonlocal operator bounds: to any three-dimensional scalar transport problem e.g. conductivity, for which explicit results are given encompassing the full permissible ranges of the two- and three-point statistics terms for arbitrary three-dimensional isotropic phase distributions; and to general three-dimensional composites, where explicit results require future research. Finally, we show how the work just summarized, treating elastostatics, can be generalized to elastodynamics, first in general, then explicitly for the longitudinal shear example.  相似文献

Peselnick, Meister, and Watt have developed rigorous methods for bounding elastic constants of random polycrystals based on the Hashin-Shtrikman variational principles. In particular, a fairly complex set of equations that amounts to an algorithm has been presented previously for finding the bounds on effective elastic moduli for polycrystals having hexagonal, trigonal, and tetragonal symmetries. A more analytical approach developed here, although based on the same ideas, results in a new set of compact formulas for all the cases considered. Once these formulas have been established, it is then straightforward to perform what could be considered an analytic continuation of the formulas (into the region of parameter space between the bounds) that can subsequently be used to provide self-consistent estimates for the elastic constants in all cases. This approach is very similar in spirit but differs in its details from earlier work of Willis, showing how Hashin-Shtrikman bounds and certain classes of self-consistent estimates may be related. These self-consistent estimates always lie within the bounds for physical choices of the crystal elastic constants and for all the choices of crystal symmetry considered. For cubic symmetry, the present method reproduces the self-consistent estimates obtained earlier by various authors, but the formulas for both bounds and estimates are generated in a more symmetric form. Numerical values of the estimates obtained this way are also very comparable to those found by the Gubernatis and Krumhansl coherent potential approximation (or CPA), but do not require computations of scattering coefficients.  相似文献

We compute Pareto fronts that estimate the upper bounds of the bulk modulus and fluid permeability cross-property space for periodic porous materials over a range of porosities. The fronts are generated numerically using topology optimization, which is a systematic, free-form design algorithm for optimizing material layouts. The presented microstructures demonstrate the trade-off between the bulk modulus and fluid permeability achievable with a multifunctional porous material and will be useful for designers of materials for which both stiffness and permeability are important. Our results suggest that the range of achievable stiffness and permeability properties is significantly restricted when considering elastic isotropy, as compared to cubic elastic symmetry. The estimated bounds are of practical importance given the lack of microstructure-independent theoretical cross-property bounds.  相似文献

Variational bounds for the effective behavior of nonlinear composites are improved by incorporating more-detailed morphological information. Such bounds, which are obtained from the generalized Hashin–Shtrikman variational principles, make use of a reference material with the same microstructure as the nonlinear composite. The geometrical information is contained in the effective properties of the reference material, which are explicitly present in the analytical formulae of the nonlinear bounds. In this paper, the variational approach is combined with estimates for the effective properties of the reference composite via the asymptotic homogenization method (AHM), and applied to a hexagonally periodic fiber-reinforced incompressible nonlinear elastic composite, significantly improving some recent results.  相似文献

We study the macroscopic mechanical behavior of materials with microscopic holes or hard inclusions. Specifically, we deal with the effective elastic moduli of composites whose microgeometry consists of either soft or hard isolated inclusions surrounded by an elastic matrix. We approach this problem by taking the stiffness of the inclusion phase to be a complex variable, which we eventually evaluate at the soft or hard limits. Our main result states that there is a certain class of non-physical, negative-definite values of the elastic moduli of the inclusion phase for which the effective tensor does not have infinities or become otherwise singular. We present applications of this result to the estimation of effective moduli and to homogenization theorems. The first application involves using complexanalytic methods to obtain rigorous and accurate bounds on the effective moduli of the high-contrast composites under consideration. We also discuss the variational estimates of Rubenfeld & Keller, which yield a complementary set of bounds on these moduli. The best bounds are given by a combination of the analytical and variational results. As a second application, we show that certain known theorems of homogenization for materials with holes are simple consequences of our main result, and in this connection we establish corresponding new theorems for materials with hard inclusions. While our rederivation of the homogenization theorems for materials with holes can be closely related to other known constructions, it appears that certain elements provided by our main result are essential in the proof of homogenization for the hard-inclusion case.  相似文献

We investigate low-energy deformations of a thin elastic sheet subject to a displacement boundary condition consistent with a conical deformation. Under the assumption that the displacement near the sheet’s center is of order h|logh|, where h?1 is the thickness of the sheet, we establish matching upper and lower bounds of order h 2|logh| for the minimum elastic energy per unit thickness, with a prefactor determined by the geometry of the associated conical deformation. These results are established first for a 2D model problem and then extended to 3D elasticity.  相似文献
