ReacTiO 2 ns for rings : Gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2 are used as a novel heterogeneous catalyst for the isomerization of epoxides to allylic alcohols by a concerted mechanism (see scheme). The reaction proceeds in high yields and the product selectivity is often remarkable.

The effect of carbon is subtle but sweet : The flexible C‐linkage in the newly synthesised C‐glycosyl mimetic, Manα(1,6)‐C‐ManαOPh allows OH? π bonding, both in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. This interaction is absent in the O‐linked disaccharide (see figure).

W415 is a chiral smectic compound with a remarkably weak temperature dependence of its giant electroclinic effect in the liquid crystalline smectic A* phase. Furthermore it possesses a high spontaneous polarization in the smectic C* phase. The origin of this striking electroclinic effect is the co‐occurrence of a de Vries‐type ordering with a weak first‐order tilting transition (see the synchroton X‐ray scattering profiles).

A promising method for the production of germanium photonic crystals consists of electrodeposition of Ge from GeCl4‐containing ionic liquids inside templates of polystyrene colloidal crystals and subsequent removal of the template. This room‐temperature method gives rise to the fabrication of a three‐dimensional highly ordered macroporous germanium nanostructure (see picture; scale: 2 μm) as a prototype of a photonic crystal.

PS, I love you! Novel mixed phosphole/thiophene π‐conjugated systems were synthesized and their electronic properties have been studied both experimentally by UV/Vis spectroscopy and electrochemistry and by theoretical calculations. Exploiting the chemistry of both P‐ and S‐heteroles allows the generation of a diverse range of novel ring‐fused benzophosphole–thiophene derivatives.

Metal‐free triazole turns : 1,5‐Disubstituted peptidyl triazoles are obtained regioselectively from the 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition of peptidyl phosphoranes and azides. Peptide turns are thus formed that contain a conformationally locked cis peptide bond. Being regioselective and free of heavy metals, this reaction may find broad application in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry.

Dark state: The photophysics of 9H‐2AP (see figure) depends strongly on the solvent and the temperature. In polar, aprotic solvents the fluorescence quantum yield is lower compared to protic ones. Analysis of the diffuse fluorescence spectra point to the existence of a dark singlet n,pi* state which is long‐lived (1 microsecond).

Chain change : Variations in the position, number, and chain length of the n‐alkoxy chains readily tune the liquid‐crystalline properties of 2,5‐diaryl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole derivatives from smectic to hexagonal columnar mesophases at room temperature. The calamitic S‐heterocyclic compounds show electrical conductivity in both solid and liquid‐crystal states.
