Dynamic toughness in elastic nonlinear viscous solids
This work addresses the interrelationship among dissipative mechanisms—material separation in the fracture process zone (FPZ), nonelastic deformation in the surrounding background material and kinetic energy—and how they affect the macroscopic dynamic fracture toughness as well as the limiting crack speed in strain rate sensitive materials. To this end, a micromechanics-based model for void growth in a nonlinear viscous solid is incorporated into a microporous strip of cell elements that forms the FPZ. The latter is surrounded by background material described by conventional constitutive relations. In the first part of the paper, the background material is assumed to be purely elastic. Here, the computed dynamic fracture toughness is a convex function of crack velocity. In the second part, the background material as well as the FPZ are described by similar rate-sensitivity parameters. Voids grow in the strain rate strengthened FPZ as the crack velocity increases. Consequently, the work of separation increases. By contrast, the inelastic dissipation in the background material appears to be a concave function of crack velocity. At the lower crack velocity regime, where dissipation in the background material is dominant, toughness decreases as crack velocity increases. At high crack velocities, inelastic deformation enhanced by the inertial force can cause a sharp increase in toughness. Here, the computed toughness increases rapidly with crack velocity. There exist regimes where the toughness is a non-monotonic function of the crack velocity. Two length scales—the width of the FPZ and the ratio of the shear wave speed to the reference strain rate—can be shown to strongly affect the dynamic fracture toughness. Our computational simulations can predict experimental data for fracture toughness vs. crack velocity reported in several studies for amorphous polymeric materials.

This paper examines steady-state crack growth at interfaces between polymeric materials and hard substrates under quasi-static conditions. The polymeric material is taken to be an elastic nonlinear viscous solid while the substrate is treated as a rigid material. Void growth and coalescence in the rate-dependent fracture process zone is modeled by a nonlinear viscous porous strip of cell elements. In the first part of this paper, the polymeric background material surrounding the process zone is assumed to be purely elastic. Under fixed mode mixity, the computed interface toughness is found to be a monotonically increasing function of crack velocity; toughness also increases rapidly with higher rate sensitivity. This behavior can be explained in terms of voids growing in a strain-rate strengthened process zone. In the second part of the paper, the background material is also treated as an elastic nonlinear viscous solid. The competition between work of separation in the process zone and energy dissipation in the background material leads to a U-shaped toughness–crack velocity curve. Effects of mode mixity, initial porosity, rate sensitivity, as well as the initial yield strain on toughness are studied. The simulations produce trends that agree with interface toughness vs. crack velocity data reported in experimental studies for rubber toughened epoxy-paste adhesive and urethane acrylate adhesive.

The theoretical understanding of the fracture mechanics of rubber is not as well developed as for other engineering materials, such as metals. The present study is intended to further the understanding of the dissipative processes that take place in rubber in the vicinity of a propagating crack tip. This dissipation contributes significantly to the total fracture toughness of the rubber and is therefore of great interest from a fracture mechanics point of view. To study this, a computational framework for analysing high-speed crack growth in a biaxially stretched rubber under plane stress is therefore formulated. The main purpose is to investigate the energy release rates required for crack propagation under different modes of biaxial stretching. The results show, that inertia comes into play when the crack speed exceeds about 50 m/s. The total work of fracture by far exceeds the surface energy consumed at the very crack tip, and the difference must be attributed to dissipative damage processes in the vicinity of the crack tip. The size of this damage/dissipation zone is expected to be a few millimetres.

The effect of high temperature hydrogen attack on creep crack growth rates in steels is studied by modeling the interaction between creep deformation and gaseous pressures generated by hydrogen and methane. The equilibrium methane pressure as a function of hydrogen pressure, temperature and carbide types for carbon steels and Cr–Mo steels is calculated. This gaseous driving force is incorporated into a micromechanics model for void growth along grain boundaries of a creeping solid. Growth and coalescence of voids along grain boundaries is modeled by a microporous strip of cell elements, referred to as the fracture process zone. The cell elements are governed by a nonlinear viscous constitutive relation for a voided material. Two rate sensitivities as well as two types of grain boundaries are considered in this computational study. Simulations of creep crack growth accelerated by gaseous pressures are performed under conditions of small-scale and extensive creep. The computed crack growth rates at elevated temperatures are able to reproduce the trends of experimental results.

We consider a Mode III lattice with an interface layer where the dynamic crack growth is caused by a localised sinusoidal wave. In the wave–fracture scenario, the ‘feeding wave’ (here also called the knife wave) delivers energy to the moving crack front, while the dissipative waves carry a part of this energy away from the front. The questions addressed here are:
• What are the conditions of existence of the localised knife wave?
• What is the lower bound of the amplitude of the feeding wave, which supports the crack propagation, for a given deformational fracture criterion?
• How does the crack speed depend on the amplitude of the feeding wave?
• What are the dissipative waves? How much energy is irradiated by these waves and what is the total dissipation?
• What are the conditions of existence of the steady-state regime for the propagating crack?
We consider analytically two established regimes: the steady-state regime, where the motion of neighbouring masses (along the interface) differs only by a constant shift in time, and an alternating-strain regime, where the corresponding amplitudes differ by sign. We also present the numerical simulation results for a model of a high-contrast interface structure. Along with the energy of the feeding and dissipative waves, an energy radiated to the bulk of the lattice is identified.

The perceived wisdom about thin sheet fracture is that (i) the crack propagates under mixed mode I & III giving rise to a slant through-thickness fracture profile and (ii) the fracture toughness remains constant at low thickness and eventually decreases with increasing thickness. In the present study, fracture tests performed on thin DENT plates of various thicknesses made of stainless steel, mild steel, 6082-O and NS4 aluminium alloys, brass, bronze, lead, and zinc systematically exhibit (i) mode I “bath-tub”, i.e. “cup & cup”, fracture profiles with limited shear lips and significant localized necking (more than 50% thickness reduction), (ii) a fracture toughness that linearly increases with increasing thickness (in the range of 0.5-). The different contributions to the work expended during fracture of these materials are separated based on dimensional considerations. The paper emphasises the two parts of the work spent in the fracture process zone: the necking work and the “fracture” work. Experiments show that, as expected, the work of necking per unit area linearly increases with thickness. For a typical thickness of , both fracture and necking contributions have the same order of magnitude in most of the metals investigated.A model is developed in order to independently evaluate the work of necking, which successfully predicts the experimental values. Furthermore, it enables the fracture energy to be derived from tests performed with only one specimen thickness. In a second modelling step, the work of fracture is computed using an enhanced void growth model valid in the quasi plane stress regime. The fracture energy varies linearly with the yield stress and void spacing and is a strong function of the hardening exponent and initial void volume fraction. The coupling of the two models allows the relative contributions of necking versus fracture to be quantified with respect to (i) the two length scales involved in this problem, i.e. the void spacing and the plate thickness, and (ii) the flow properties of the material. Each term can dominate depending on the properties of the material which explains the different behaviours reported in the literature about thin plate fracture toughness and its dependence with thickness.

Cohesive zone model was used to simulate two-dimensional plane strain crack propagation at the grain level model including grain boundary zones. Simulated results show that the original crack-tip may not be separated firstly in an elastic-viscoplastic polycrystals. The grain interior's material properties (e.g. strain rate sensitivity) characterize the competitions between plastic and cohesive energy dissipation mechanisms. The higher the strain rate sensitivity is, the larger amount of the external work is transformed into plastic dissipation energy than into cohesive energy, which delays the cohesive zone rupturing. With the strain rate sensitivity decreased, the material property tends to approach the elastic-plastic responses. In this case, the plastic dissipation energy decreases and the cohesive dissipation energy increases which accelerates the cohesive zones debonding. Increasing the cohesive strength or the critical separation displacement will reduce the stress triaxiality at grain interiors and grain boundaries. Enhancing the cohesive zones ductility can improve the matrix materials resistance to void damage.

A multiresolution continuum simulation of the ductile fracture process
With the advancement in computational science that is stepping into the Exascale era and experimental techniques that enable rapid reconstruction of the 3D microstructure, quantitative microstructure simulations at an unprecedented fidelity level are giving rise to new possibilities for linking microstructure to property. This paper presents recent advances in 3D computational modeling of ductile fracture in high toughness steels. Ductile fracture involves several concurrent and mutually interactive mechanisms at multiple length scales of microstructure. With serial sectioning tomographic techniques, a digital dataset of microstructure features associated with the fracture process has been experimentally reconstructed. In this study, primary particles are accurately and explicitly modeled while the secondary particles are modeled by a two scale multiresolution continuum model. The present numerical simulation captures detailed characteristics of the fracture process, such as zigzag crack morphology, critical void growth ratios, local stress triaxiality variation, and intervoid ligament structure. For the first time, fracture toughness is linked to multiscale microstructures in a realistic large 3D model.

Crack propagation in metallic materials produces plastic dissipation when material in front for the crack tip enters the active plastic zone traveling with the tip, and later ends up being part of the residual plastic strain wake. Thus, the macroscopic work required to advance the crack is typically much larger than the work needed in the near tip fracture process. For rate sensitive materials, the amount of plastic dissipation typically depends on the rate at which the material is deformed. A dependency on the crack velocity should therefore be expected. The objective of this paper is to study the macroscopic toughness of crack advance along an interface joining two dissimilar rate dependent materials, characterized by an elastic-viscoplastic material model that approaches the response of a J2-flow material in the rate independent limit. The emphasis here is on the rate sensitivity of the macroscopic fracture toughness under mixed Mode I/II loading. Moreover, special cases of joined similar rate dependent materials, as well as dissimilar materials where one substrate remains either elastic or approaches the rate independent limit is also included. The numerical analysis is carried out using the SSV model [Suo, Z., Shih, C., Varias, A., 1993. A theory for cleavage cracking in the presence of plastic flow. Acta Metall. Mater. 41, 1551–1557] embedded in a steady state finite element formulation, here assuming plane strain conditions and small-scale yielding. Results are presented for a wide range of material parameters, including noteworthy observations of a characteristic crack velocity at which the macroscopic toughness becomes independent of the material rate sensitivity. The potential of this phenomenon is elaborated on from a modeling point of view.

Crack initiation and crack growth resistance in elastic plastic materials, dominated by crack-tip plasticity are analyzed with the crack modeled as a cohesive zone. Two different types (exponential and bilinear) of cohesive zone models (CZMs) have been used to represent the mechanical behavior of the cohesive zones. In this work, it is suggested that different forms of CZMs (e.g., exponential, bilinear) are the manifestations of different micromechanisms-based inelastic processes that participate in dissipating energy during the fracture process and each form is specific to each material system. It is postulated that the total energy release rate comprises the plastic dissipation rate in the bounding material and the separation energy rate within the fracture process zone, the latter is determined by CZMs. The total energy release rate then becomes a function of the material properties (e.g., yield strength, strain hardening exponent) and cohesive properties of the fracture process zone (e.g., cohesive strength and cohesive energy), and the form of cohesive zone model (CZM) that determines the rate of energy dissipation in the forward and wake regions of the crack. The effects of material parameters, cohesive zone parameters as well as the form/shape of CZMs in predicting the crack growth resistance and the size of plastic zone (SPZ) surrounding the crack tip are systematically examined. It is found that in addition to the cohesive strength and cohesive energy, the form (shape) of the traction–separation law of CZM plays a very critical role in determining the crack growth resistance (R-curve) of a given material. It is further observed that the shape of the CZM corresponds to inelastic processes active in the forward and wake regions of the crack, and has a profound influence on the R-curve and SPZ.

The isochromatic fringe patterns surrounding an intersonically propagating interface crack are developed and characterized using the recently developed stress field equations. A parametric investigation is conducted to study the influence of various parameters such as the crack-tip velocity and the contact coefficient on the isochromatic fringe patterns. It has been observed that the crack-tip velocity has a significant effect on the size and shape of isochromatic fringe patterns. The contact coefficient, on the other hand, does not affect the fringe pattern significantly. The paper also presents a numerical scheme to extract various parameters of interest such as the series coefficients of the stress field, the contact coefficient and the dissipation energy. The results show that the crack growth is highly unstable in the intersonic regime, and the energy dissipation decreases monotonically with increasing crack-tip velocity. The experimental data fit well with the recently proposed fracture criterion for intersonic interfacial fracture.

The size dependence of micro-toughness in ductile fracture
Micro-toughness in ductile fracture is defined as the plastic work dissipated per unit fracture surface area in the material separation processes of void growth and coalescence. A micromechanics model for the estimation of the size dependence of micro-toughness in ductile fracture is presented. Size effects are incorporated in the model using the conventional mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity (CMSG) theory. A finite element model of an axisymmetric representative unit cell with an initial spherical void is used to validate model predictions. Two characteristic length scales emerge from the model. The initial void radius sets the scale for the initial spherical void growth. For the subsequent void coalescence, the scale is set by the width of the intervoid ligament. Energy dissipation in ductile fracture is found to be dominated by the mechanisms of coalescence, and the micro-toughness in ductile fracture is found to be size dependent for dimple sizes approximately one order of magnitude larger than the material length scale.

Fracture of a solid is a highly multiscale process that associates atomic scale bond breaking with macroscopic crack propagation, and the process can be dramatically influenced by the presence of defects in materials. In a nanomaterial, defect formation energy decreases with the reduction of material size, and therefore, the role of defects in crack formation and subsequent crack growth in such materials may not be understood from the classical laws of fracture mechanism. In this study, we investigated the crack formation process of a defective (with missing atoms) nanostructured material (NaCl) using a series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It was demonstrated that simple defects in the form of several missing atoms in the material could develop into a planar crack. Subsequently, MD simulations on failures of nanosized NaCl with pre-defined planar atomistic cracks of two different lengths under prescribed tensile displacement loads were performed. These failure loads were then applied on the equivalent continuum models, separately, to evaluate the associated fracture toughness values using the finite element analysis. For small cracks, the fracture toughness thus obtained is cracksize dependent and the corresponding critical energy release rate is significantly smaller than Griffith’s theoretical value. Explanation for this discrepancy between LEFM and the atomistic model was attempted.

Comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations, employing a coarse-grained bead-spring model, are conducted to study the failure of adhesion between two immiscible polymers stitched together via mobile promoters. A realistic model under separating tension is constructed that enables both chain pulling out viscously and bulk dissipation in two dissimilar glassy polymers that one is dense melt and another is loose. The contributions to the adhesion energy from thermodynamics and chain suction are studied for dependence of the strain rate at fixed basic molecular parameters. With low density of connectors, either adhesion toughness or strength changes slightly with separation strain rate as viscous loss is negligible. But rate effects become evident for long connectors with high density, viscoelastic sliding friction and reptation of chains dominate and the fracture energy increases with strain rate. The results provide insights into the evolution of adhesion surfaces coupled with promoter molecular slipping out of bulk melts, which are useful for future developments of continuum models for failure of polymeric interfaces.

A nonuniform crack growth problem is considered for a homogeneous isotropic elastic medium subjected to the action of remote oscillatory and static loads. In the case of a plane problem, the former results in Rayleigh waves propagating toward the crack tip. For the antiplane problem the shear waves play a similar role. Under the considered conditions the crack cannot move uniformly, and if the static prestress is not sufficiently high, the crack moves interruptedly. For fracture modes I and II the established, crack speed periodic regimes are examined. For mode III a complete transient solution is derived with the periodic regime as an asymptote. Examples of the crack motion are presented. The crack speed time-period and the time-averaged crack speeds are found. The ratio of the fracture energy to the energy carried by the Rayleigh wave is derived. An issue concerning two equivalent forms of the general solution is discussed.
