Endless single-mode fibers, which remain single mode over their entire range of guidance, are, to the best of our knowledge, the first reported unique application of photonic crystal fibers. These endless single-mode fibers are made by omitting a single air hole in a periodic array of small air holes in a background silica glass. The feasibility of all-glass endless single-mode photonic crystal fibers where the air holes are replaced by a glass with vanishingly small refractive index contrast relative to silica is first studied theoretically and then demonstrated experimentally. This new all-glass design enables not only ease and consistency of fabrication but also the convenience to be handled and spliced like conventional fibers.  相似文献

Improved large-mode-area endlessly single-mode photonic crystal fibers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We numerically study the possibilities for improved large-mode-area endlessly single-mode photonic crystal fibers for use in high-power delivery applications. By carefully choosing the optimal hole diameter, we find that a triangular core formed by three missing neighboring air holes considerably improves the mode area and loss properties compared with the case with a core formed by one missing air hole. In a realized fiber we demonstrate an enhancement of the mode area by approximately 30% without a corresponding increase in the attenuation.  相似文献

We demonstrate a novel method for low-loss splicing small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) by repeated arc discharges using a conventional fusion splicer. An optimum mode field match at the interface of PCF-SMF and an adiabatic mode field variation in the longitudinal direction of the small-core PCF can be achieved by repeated arc discharges applied over the splicing joint to gradually collapse the air holes of the small-core PCF. This method is simple and offers a practical solution for light coupling between small-core PCFs and SMFs.  相似文献

The comparatively large mode field single-mode photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) were fabricated, the lightwave from 600- to 1600-nm wavelength along this PCF could be transmitted in single mode. The manufacturing process technologies of the PCFs were exploited, and the drawing parameters of PCFs were also presented. The structure parameters on the single-mode performance of PCFs were theoretically studied,and in practice the design was proved. The measurements of cut-off wavelength and light intensity distribution showed that the PCF had comparatively wide single-mode operating wavelength range.  相似文献

A method based on controlled air hole collapse for low-loss fusion splicing small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) was demonstrated. A taper rig was used to control air hole collapse accurately to enlarge the MFDs of PCFs which was then spliced with SMFs using a fusion splicer. An optimum mode field match at the interface of PCF-SMF was achieved and a low-loss with 0.64 dB was obtained from 3.57 dB for a PCF with 4 μm MFD and a SMF with 10.4 μm MFD experimentally.  相似文献

We propose and analyze a highly efficient method of coupling light from optical fibers to two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides. Efficient coupling is achieved by positioning of a tapered fiber parallel to the linear defect, where the photonic crystal's cladding functions as a grating coupler and provides field confinement as well. Numerical simulations indicate that better than 90% transmission is possible with a full width at half-magnitude bandwidth of 12nm. It is shown that one can increase the bandwidth by increasing the field overlap between the two waveguides.  相似文献

We made an all-silica optical fiber by embedding a central core in a two-dimensional photonic crystal with a micrometer-spaced hexagonal array of air holes. An effective-index model confirms that such a fiber can be single mode for any wavelength. Its useful single-mode range within the transparency window of silica, although wide, is ultimately bounded by a bend-loss edge at short wavelengths as well as at long wavelengths.  相似文献

A rigorous analysis and design of efficient coupling from photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides into conventional dielectric waveguides is reported. Closed-form expressions for the reflection and transmission matrices that completely characterize the scattering that occurs at the interface are derived based on an eigenmode expansion technique and a Bloch basis. Analytic expressions are used to analyze the reflection into PhC waveguides. We obtain that negligible reflection can be achieved by choosing a certain interface within a PhC unit cell. Furthermore, analytic expressions are used to design a novel and compact coupler structure in order to achieve high coupling efficiency when broad dielectric waveguides are considered. Thereby, transmission efficiencies near 100 from the fundamental guided Bloch mode into the fundamental waveguide mode are achieved.  相似文献

The contra-directional coupling between two photonic crystal (PC) waveguides is studied, using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. A design of contra-directional coupler is presented and its transmission properties are investigated. The device can be used as an add/drop filter. It is also shown that the coupled mode theory is suitable to study the photonic crystal waveguide coupler.  相似文献

We report a higher-order mode filter in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fibers (HNPCFs) made by a conventional fiber taper rig based on controlled hole collapse. The air holes of the HNPCFs will become smaller due to the surface stress when they are heated on the taper rig incorporating a simple burner configuration. So the HNPCFs' configuration parameters can be easily changed by controlling the heating time. As is well known, if the relative hole size d/Λ of PCF is less than or equal to 0.4, it will become an endlessly single mode fiber. So we can control the heating time to satisfy the criterion of endlessly single mode operation, the heated section will be a higher-mode filter in HNPCFs. The optical loss of the higher-order mode filter is very low for the fundamental mode, typically less than 0.1 dB.  相似文献

 设计了一种聚甲基丙烯酸甲酯(PMMA)基的单偏振单模(SPSM)微结构聚合物光纤(MPOF)。利用全矢量有限元法和光束传播法相结合分析了这种光纤的偏振特性和约束损耗。通过优化光纤结构参数,发现在0.51 μm~0.62 μm的可见光波长范围,由于基模两个正交偏振模的截止波长不同,这种微结构聚合物光纤只能传输基模中的一个偏振模,从而实现单偏振单模运转。该11圈圆空气孔六角排列光纤结构的传导偏振模在0.57 μm波长处约束损耗仅为1.13 dB/m,这种低损耗的单偏振单模微结构聚合物光纤可有效消除传统保偏光纤固有的偏振串扰和偏振模色散。  相似文献

Tunable properties of light propagation in photonic crystal fibers filled with liquid crystals, called photonic liquid crystal fibers (PLCFs) are presented. The propagation properties of PLCFs strongly depend on contrast between refractive indices of the solid core (pure silica glass) and liquid crystals (LCs) filing the holes of the fiber. Due to relatively strong thermo-optical effect, we can change the refractive index of the LC by changing its temperature. Numerical analysis of light propagation in PLCF, based on two simulation methods, such as finite difference (FD) and multipole method (MM) is presented. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with our earlier experimental results presented elsewhere [1].  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate hydrophobic photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). A chemical surface treatment for making PCFs hydrophobic is introduced. This repels water from the holes of PCFs, so that their optical properties remain unchanged even when they are immersed in water. The combination of a hollow core and a water-repellent inner surface of the hydrophobic PCF provides an ultracompact dissolved-gas sensor element, which is demonstrated for the sensing of dissolved ammonia gas.  相似文献

We study the dispersive properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCF's) with elliptical air holes. The unusual guidance of PCF leads to novel behavior of the birefringence, group-velocity walk-off, and dispersion parameters, including the possibility of zero walk-off with high birefringence in the single-mode regime. A number of these effects are closely tied to the underlying radiation states of the air-hole lattice.  相似文献

We extend the improved effective index method (IEIM) to analyze the cladding mode of the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and to predict cladding mode coupling in gratings. By introducing a new step-index fiber model for the PCF, the cladding mode coupling between a LP01 core mode and HE11 cladding mode in long-period gratings formed in PCF is accurately predicted by the IEIM. The fiber model works well for the PCF used here not only in predicting resonant mode coupling, but also in analyzing core and low-order cladding modes.  相似文献

大模场光子晶体光纤在高功率激光传输、光纤放大器、光纤激光器中的广泛应用, 使其受到研究者的广泛关注.硫系玻璃在红外波段(1–20μm)具有优良透过性能, 且具有折射率高(2.0–3.5)、声子能量低(小于350 cm-1)、 组分可调等特性, 成为制备红外光纤的理想材料. 本文设计一种基于Ge20Sb15Se65硫系玻璃基质的新型单模传输、低损耗、超大模场面积光子晶体光纤结构, 经理论验证其在λ =10.6 μm处基模限制损耗远低于0.1 dB/m, 高阶限制模损耗大于2 dB/m, 模场面积约为13333 μm2. 关键词: 硫系玻璃 大模场面积 红外光子晶体光纤 结构设计  相似文献

In this paper, we present and propose a novel structure for improved birefringence and single-mode propagation condition photonic crystal fiber (PCF) in a broad range of wavelength. The birefringence of the fundamental mode and single mode property in such a PCF is numerically estimated by employing full vector finite element method (FVFEM) and anisotropic perfectly matched layers (APML). The simulation results illustrate that we can achieve a high birefringence and perfect single-mode condition by employing silica-filled into one-line elliptical air holes parallel to x-axis and rotated by an angle. Obviously, the proposed PCF is quite useful for optical devices.  相似文献

We report a strongly anisotropic photonic crystal fiber. Twofold rotational symmetry was introduced into a single-mode fiber structure by creation of a regular array of airholes of two sizes disposed about a pure-silica core. Based on spectral measurements of the polarization mode beating, we estimate that the fiber has a beat length of approximately 0.4 mm at a wavelength of 1540 nm, in good agreement with the results of modeling.  相似文献
