We demonstrate a new method for measuring the length of a femtosecond laser pulse induced filament in air using a LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) technique. The LIDAR involves a detector with a fast response time. The back-scattered multiphoton induced fluorescence from nitrogen molecules excited inside the filament is measured, from which the length of the filament can be determined. We find good agreement between the measured filament length and the length estimated from burn patterns on paper. In addition, good qualitative agreement between the experimental measurement and numerical simulations is obtained for the signal features of the filament. We propose that this new method can be used to quantitatively determine filamentation at longer distances. We report the first observation of the attachment of two single plasma filaments created collinearly in the atmosphere by IR femtosecond laser pulses. The linked filamentary structure is electrically conductive and emits sub-THz radiation over its entire length. Concatenation is achieved only for a specific time ordering between the two initial laser pulses. The pulse producing the filament closer to the laser source must be retarded with respect to the other pulse. This special time ordering is attributed to the acceleration of light in a self-guided pulse. Received: 4 March 2003 / Published online: 14 May 2003 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. Experimental results pertaining to 1 ps pulse-width filaments at 248 nm are reviewed. The theoretical studies presented in this paper show that scaling those filaments to ns pulse-widths should enable us to trap up to 1 J in a single channel. We will show how the use of an aerodynamic window can lead to applications such as laser-induced lightning and high-aspect-ratio hole drilling. The backscattered fluorescence of nitrogen from filaments generated by intense ultra-fast Ti:sapphire laser pulses propagating in air is studied. The backscattered fluorescence from N2 molecules and ions show an exponential increase with increasing filament length, indicating amplified spontaneous emission. We study how the well-known lidar equation is affected by the use of ultra-short, high-power laser pulses. Because of the self-focusing and self-guiding, the overlap function ξ, representing the reduction fraction of the signal resulting from geometrical effects inside the experimental system, needs to be reconsidered. The losses due to multi-photon ionisation in the filament entail a heavy weakening of the return signal. We also investigate the contribution of the white-light components generated by self-phase modulation. We demonstrate intracavity frequency doubling of a standard femtosecond Ti:sapphire oscillator. The cavity is extended with a pair of focusing mirrors and a 0.5-mm-thick BBO crystal. We achieve a repetition rate of 50 MHz and simultaneously generate 22 mW of 55-fs pulses at 810 nm and 200 mW of 73-fs pulses at 405 nm, which corresponds to 4 nJ per pulse. We create a total of 330-mW, 405-nm light when pumping the Ti:sapphire crystal with 5.7 W from an Ar-ion laser, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 5.7%. No saturation is found, which implies that higher outputs can be achieved with higher pump rates. Preliminary results from the use of blue pulses as pump in an optical parametric amplifier seeded by pulses from a photonic crystal fiber are presented. Using tightly focussed femtosecond laser pulses, waveguides can be fabricated inside various glasses and crystals. This technique has the potential to generate not only planar but three-dimensional photonic devices. In this paper we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first true three-dimensional integrated optical device, a 1×3 splitter fabricated in pure fused silica. The optical properties of this device and possibilities for the fabrication of complex high-density integrated optical elements are discussed. A deconvolution filtering model of multiple scattering in ground-based single field of view (SFOV) LIDAR returns is described. It is based on time series deconvolution techniques. The contribution of multiply scattered photons in SFOV LIDAR returns can be numerically modeled by processing LIDAR signals without additional information about aerosol properties and measurement geometry. Deconvolution results are in good agreement with those performed by Monte Carlo calculations, showing that the significance of multiply scattered photons is strongly correlated with aerosol concentration. It is found that, for ground-based LIDAR, the contribution of multiply scattered photons to LIDAR signals is typically below 5% in a clear urban atmosphere, and up to 14% in a very dirty urban atmosphere in Hong Kong during winter seasons. We use short-pulse high-power lasers to selectively modify the structure of nanolaminates and nanocrystals. It is demonstrated that femtosecond pulses can achieve excellent results for microscopic thin film removal. Laser pulses can also be used to modify the crystal structure of thin films. It is also demonstrated that coherent laser excitation promotes a selective modification of nanocrystals, resulting in changes of size, shape, and crystal structure. A 50 cm silver coated hollow fiber with inner diameter of 250 μm and filled with argon has been used to compress optical pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser at 800 nm. Input pulses with energy of 250 μJ and duration of 110 fs were used and compressed pulses with energy of 220 μJ and duration of 20 fs were generated by using a prism compressor. Numerical and experimental results are compared. There is good agreement between the measured beam diameters of the hollow-fiber output pulse and the calculated values obtained from propagation of the HE11 mode into free space. For comparison, a similar uncoated fused-silica hollow fiber was also used to obtain 20 fs compressed pulses with an energy of 190 μJ. The competition between femtosecond laser pulse induced optical breakdown and femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in condensed matter is studied both experimentally and numerically using water as an example. The coexistence of filamentation and breakdown is observed under tight focusing conditions. The development of the filamentation process from the creation of a single filament to the formation of many filaments at higher pulse energy is characterized systematically. In addition, strong deflection and modulation of the supercontinuum is observed. They manifest themselves at the beginning of the filamentation process, near the highly disordered plasma created by optical breakdown at the geometrical focus. We have developed a novel interferometric autocorrelator composed of only reflective elements, which functions as a beam splitter and an optical delay line. Analytical expressions are derived to give second-order autocorrelation functions and deconvolution factors for various conditions. The measurement of femtosecond laser pulses by interferometric autocorrelation is demonstrated in the visible region. The results are compared with those by calculation. A differential optical transmission technique has been used to monitor in situ the efficiency of laser cleaning for the removal of sub-micrometer-sized particles on substrates transparent at the monitoring wavelength. This technique has been applied to the removal of sub-micrometer polystyrene particles on polyimide substrates using laser pulses of 30 ps duration at 292 nm while probing the material transmission at 633 nm. The sensitivity achieved -1/104 for the transmission changes induced upon single-pulse laser exposure – allows us to monitor the removal of just a few sub-micron-sized particles from the probed region inside the irradiated area. We report stable self-starting near-transform-limited 26-fs pulses at 250-mW output power from a Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) Cr4+:YAG laser using chirped mirrors in combination with prisms. The highest output power achieved in KLM regime was 600 mW at 55-fs pulse duration. The experimental results agree well with the results of theoretical analysis with respect to KLM self-starting ability and stability against continuous-wave and multi-pulse operation. Parameter ranges for stable transform-limited KLM pulses as well as the shortest achievable pulse durations are established. Using an InGaAs-InP semiconductor saturable absorber mirror we could obtain self-starting 57-fs pulses at the average output power of 200 mW. Two-photon absorption was found to be the main mechanism favoring the multiple-pulse operation. Deep drilling of metals by femtosecond laser pulses   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Results of recent investigations on deep drilling of metals by femtosecond laser pulses are reported. At high laser fluences, well above the ablation threshold, femtosecond lasers can drill deep, high-quality holes in metals without any post-processing or special gas environment. It is shown that for high-quality drilling of metals, the following processes are important: (1) laser-induced optical breakdown of air containing metal vapor and small metal particles (debris) generated by multi-pulse femtosecond laser ablation, (2) transformation of laser pulses into light filaments, and (3) low-fluence finishing. We investigated nonlinear refraction, nonlinear absorption, and saturable absorption of polymethine dyes by the Z-scan technique (λ=1064 nm). The analysis of simultaneous appearance of several nonlinear optical processes in dye solutions excited by picosecond pulses was carried out. The saturable absorption was analyzed taking into account various models. Nonlinear refractive indices, nonlinear absorption coefficients, and saturation intensities of various polymethine dyes were measured. We describe a 7.4-μm source based on difference frequency generation with 6.5 mW of 1278-nm radiation from an extended cavity laser and 66 mW of 1544-nm radiation from another extended cavity laser, amplified in an erbium-doped fibre amplifier. Optimum focusing of the input beams in the 5×5×10-mm3 AgGaSe2 crystal, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the output beam, are determined. The source is used for accurate determination of line parameters for selected lines of the ν3 band of SO2, centred at 1361 cm-1. Subsequently, these lines are used for performing quantitative analysis of gas mixtures containing SO2 at concentration levels down to 4 ppm without relying on any calibration with certified gas mixtures. This demonstrates the potential of infrared spectroscopy as a primary method for low-concentration gas analysis. The propagation of femtosecond terawatt laser pulses at reduced pressure (0.7 atm) is investigated experimentally. In such conditions, the non-linear refractive index n 2 is reduced by 30%, resulting in a slightly farther filamentation onset and a reduction of the filament number. However, the filamentation process, especially the filament length, is not qualitatively affected. We also show that drizzle does not prevent the filaments from forming and propagating.  相似文献

The distance-resolved spectral intensity distribution of the backscattered light from long filaments generated in air using ultra-short and intense laser pulses is presented. A clean fluorescence spectrum from N2 molecules and ions, which is produced by the high peak intensity inside the plasma filament of the fundamental pulse, was clearly resolved from the backscattered supercontinuum. The supercontinuum generated by both the fundamental and the third-harmonic pulses developed progressively and became fully developed only at the end of the filamentation.  相似文献

A reliable and efficient method based on a geometrical optical approach is presented to model the propagation of ultrashort pulses in optical systems. It is shown that the commonly used method to determine the group delay of the spectral components of a pulse from their geometrical optical path lengths is only correct for aberration-free optical systems. In the case of systems with angular dispersion and imaging errors, a correction to the path values obtained from ray-tracing calculations must be applied, since for specific systems neglect of the correction causes significant errors. A technique for performing this correction is presented. Two optical arrangements used for the generation and detection of tunable THz radiation by the femtosecond tilted-pulse-front excitation technique are analyzed to demonstrate the indispensability of the correction.
