We measured dielectric spectra of glycerol at pressures exceeding 1 GPa in order to examine the slow Debye-like peak. This peak is not a relaxation process, but its frequency is consistent with an origin in dielectric discontinuities due to impurities. These heterogeneities have a non-negligible bulk modulus and are identified as volatile, relatively non-polar liquid contaminants. Although this slow peak is often found in the dielectric spectra of polyalcohols, it is not an intrinsic feature thereof, unlike the ostensibly similar relaxation peak in monoalcohols.  相似文献

The relaxation behavior of poly(2,3-dichlorobenzyl methacrylate) is studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range of 10(-1)-10(9) Hz and temperature interval of 303-423 K. The isotherms representing the dielectric loss of the glassy polymer in the frequency domain present a single absorption, called beta process. At temperatures close to Tg, the dynamical alpha relaxation already overlaps with the beta process, the degree of overlapping increasing with temperature. The deconvolution of the alpha and beta relaxations is facilitated using the retardation spectra calculated from the isotherms utilizing linear programming regularization parameter techniques. The temperature dependence of the beta relaxation presents a crossover associated with a change in activation energy of the local processes. The distance between the alpha and beta peaks, expressed as log(fmax;beta/fmax;alpha) where fmax is the frequency at the peak maximum, follows Arrhenius behavior in the temperature range of 310-384 K. Above 384 K, the distance between the peaks remains nearly constant and, as a result, the a onset temperature exhibited for many polymers is not reached in this system. The fraction of relaxation carried out through the alpha process, without beta assistance, is larger than 60% in the temperature range of 310-384 K where the so-called Williams ansatz holds.  相似文献

Measurements of dielectric constant and loss, broad-line nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential thermal analysis of concentrated solutions of poly(γ-benzyl-L -glutamate) (PBLG) were carried out to determine the effects of intermolecular interactions on the mobility of the side group and the solvent (dichloromethane or dioxane). Only one dielectric loss peak due to the cooperative motion of the side group and the solvent was found. The activation energy of this relaxation process varied from 3 to 47 kcal/mole with increasing concentration of PBLG from 20 to 100% by weight accompanied with steep increases at about 40 and 80%. This result is explained as due to entanglement of neighboring side groups. In NMR, narrowing of the line was observed near the temperature where the dielectric loss was observed. The glass transition was also observed by differential thermal analysis. From these results it was concluded that the relaxation observed in PBLG solution and in pure PBLG have the nature of primary or α relaxations.  相似文献

The dielectric relaxation spectra of D-sorbitol glass have been studied in real time during annealing at 221.1 K, which is 47 K below its T(g) of 268 K. As the glass structurally relaxes during annealing, features of the Johari-Goldstein (JG) relaxation change with time: (i) the relaxation strength decreases, (ii) the relaxation peak at 48 Hz shifts to a higher frequency, and (iii) the relaxation spectra become narrower. All seem to follow the relation p proportional, variant exp[-(kt)(n)], where p is the magnitude of a property, k the rate constant, and t the time. The parameter n may well be less than 1, but this could not be ascertained. It is proposed that shift of the relaxation peak to a higher frequency and narrowing of the relaxation spectra occur when local, loosely packed regions of molecules in the glass structure collapse nonuniformly and the relaxation time of some of the molecules in the collapsed state becomes too long to contribute to the JG-relaxation spectra. Consequently, the half width of the spectra decreases, and the relaxation peak shifts to a higher frequency. Molecules whose diffusion becomes too slow after the local regions' collapse would contribute to the alpha-relaxation spectra and thus the net relaxation strength would increase on structural relaxation. It is argued that these findings conflict with the NMR-based conclusions that motion of all molecules in the glass and supercooled liquid contributes to the faster relaxation process.  相似文献

The dynamics of ethylcyclohexane are investigated by high resolution dielectric spectroscopy aiming to characterize the relevant relaxational features of this simple system in its fluid, supercooled liquid, and glassy states. The dielectric signature of structural relaxation is a primary loss peak with amplitude Deltaepsilon=0.01, and a secondary loss process is found in the glassy state. This beta relaxation is compared with a "slow" process revealed by ultrasonics and with previously found gamma and chi processes in similar materials containing the cyclohexyl group. The results suggest that this secondary process is an intramolecular mode rather than a Johari-Goldstein process, consistent with its persistence in the liquid state at slow relaxation times which exceed those of the alpha process. The dielectric activity of such a slow process requires that the dipole magnitude changes with the intramolecular transition, whereas a change in dipole direction only would be masked by the faster structural relaxation.  相似文献

Dielectric loss spectra of two glass-forming isomers, eugenol and isoeugenol, measured at ambient and elevated pressures in the normal liquid, supercooled, and glassy states are presented. The isomeric chemical compounds studied differ only by the location of the double bond in the alkyl chain. Above the glass transition temperature T(g), the dielectric loss spectra of both isomers exhibit an excess wing on the high frequency flank of the loss peak of the alpha relaxation and an additional faster gamma process at the megahertz frequency range. By decreasing temperature below T(g) at ambient pressure or by elevating pressure above P(g), the glass transition pressure, at constant temperature, the excess wing of isoeugenol shifts to lower frequencies and is transformed into a secondary beta-loss peak, while in eugenol it becomes a shoulder. These spectral features enable the beta-relaxation time tau(beta) to be determined in the glassy state. These changes indicate that the excess wings in isoeugenol and eugenol are similar and both are secondary beta relaxations that are not resolved in the liquid state. While in both isoeugenol and eugenol the loss peak of the beta relaxation in the glassy state and the corresponding excess wing in the liquid state shifts to lower frequencies on elevating pressure, the locations of their gamma relaxation show little change with increasing pressure. The different pressure sensitivities of the excess wing and gamma relaxation are further demonstrated by the nearly perfect superposition of the alpha-loss peak together with excess wing from the data taken at ambient pressure and at elevated pressure (and higher temperature so as to have the same alpha-peak frequency), but not the gamma-loss peak in both isoeugenol and eugenol. On physical aging isoeugenol, the beta-loss peak shifts to lower frequencies, but not the gamma relaxation. Basing on these experimental facts, the faster gamma relaxation is a local intramolecular process involving a side group and the slower beta relaxation mimics the structural alpha relaxation in behavior, involves the entire molecule and satisfies the criteria for being the Johari-Goldstein beta relaxation. Analysis and interpretation of the spectra utilizing the coupling model further demonstrate that the excess wings seen in the equilibrium liquid states of these two isomers are their genuine Johari-Goldstein beta relaxation.  相似文献

The dielectric permittivity ε′ and loss ε″ of anhydrous poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and its 38.6 w/w% hydrogel have been measured in the frequency range from 12 Hz to 200 kHz and the temperature range from 77 to 273 K. The former has a sub-Tg relaxation with a half-width of 4.5 decades for the loss spectra, whose strength increases with temperature, and an activation energy of 62.5 kJ/mol. The dielectric relaxation time of the α process of supercooled water in the hydrogel is 53 s at its calorimetric Tg of 135 K. The half-width of the relaxation spectrum is 2.85 decades and, in the narrow temperature range, its apparent activation energy is 60.8 kJ/mol. Heating of the hydrogel causes crystallization of water which begins at about 207 K and becomes readily detectable as a second dielectric loss peak at about 230 K. For each temperature between 207 and 267 K, supercooled water in the hydrogel coexists with its crystallized form, with the amount of the crystallized solid increasing with increasing temperature. These results are discussed in terms of “bound” and “free” states of water in the hydrogel.  相似文献

The theory of molecular mobility and relaxation spectra is developed for rodlike particles embedded in a polymer network with allowance for the involvement of the particles in collective network dynamics through topological entanglements with network fragments. A regular cubic coarse-grained network model is used, where the motion of junctions describes the mobility of large fragments (domains) of the initial network with a size equal to the distance between adjacent rodlike particles. The involvement of the rods in collective network dynamics is taken into account by introducing an effective quasi-elastic potential acting between the rods and junctions of the coarse-grained network and preventing long-distance diffusion of the embedded particles. The viscoelastic parameters of the coarse-grained (“renormalized”) network are functions of the viscoelastic characteristics of the initial network. The relaxation time spectra are calculated as well as the frequency dependences of the dielectric loss factor of the embedded particles that possess a permanent dipole moment directed along the major axis of each rod. Depending on the ratio between the viscoelastic characteristics of the rods and the network, the frequency dependence of the dielectric loss factor may have two maxima. The high-frequency maximum corresponds to local orientational movements of particles at fixed junctions of the coarse-grained network, which correspond to the position of the domain centers in the initial network. The low-frequency maximum corresponds to movements of particles involved in large-scale dynamics of network fragments. The dependence of the dielectric loss factor on the ratio between the viscoelastic parameters of the rods and the network is studied.  相似文献

The absorption currents in polystyrene (PS) and its donor-acceptor complex with chloranil (PS-CA) have been analysed in the temperature range 323–413 K. Low frequency (10-s-10-3 Hz) dielectric loss has been computed utilizing Haman's Fourier conversion of the absorption currents. A relaxation peak has been observed in the isochronal current and dielectric loss thermograms and identified with the a relaxation process of these polymers. The activation energy of the relaxation process has been evaluated from the Arrhenius shift of the relaxation peak. The effects of complex formation on absorption currents and the relaxation process have been discussed.  相似文献

We present shear mechanical and dielectric measurements taken on seven liquids: triphenylethylene, tetramethyltetra-phenyltrisiloxane (Dow Corning 704 diffusion pump fluid), polyphenyl ether (Santovac 5 vacuum pump fluid), perhydrosqualene, polybutadiene, decahydroisoquinoline (DHIQ), and tripropylene glycol. The shear mechanical and dielectric measurements are for each liquid performed under identical thermal conditions close to the glass transition temperature. The liquids span four orders of magnitude in dielectric relaxation strength and include liquids with and without Johari-Goldstein beta relaxation. The shear mechanical data are obtained by the piezoelectric shear modulus gauge method giving a large frequency span (10(-3)-10(4.5) Hz). This allows us to resolve the shear mechanical Johari-Goldstein beta peak in the equilibrium DHIQ liquid. We moreover report a signature (a pronounced rise in the shear mechanical loss at frequencies above the alpha relaxation) of a Johari-Goldstein beta relaxation in the shear mechanical spectra for all the liquids which show a beta relaxation in the dielectric spectrum. It is found that both the alpha and beta loss peaks are shifted to higher frequencies in the shear mechanical spectrum compared to the dielectric spectrum. It is in both the shear and dielectric responses found that liquids obeying time-temperature superposition also have a high-frequency power law with exponent close to -12. It is moreover seen that the less temperature dependent the spectral shape is, the closer it is to the universal -12 power-law behavior. The deviation from this universal power-law behavior and the temperature dependencies of the spectral shape are rationalized as coming from interactions between the alpha and beta relaxations.  相似文献

A dielectric relaxation study of aqueous solutions of the amphiphilic model peptide N‐acetyl‐leucine amide (NALA) at 298 K over a wide range of hydration levels is presented. The experiments range from states where water builds up several hydration layers to states where single water molecules or small water clusters are shared by several NALA molecules. The dielectric spectra reveal two modes on the 10 and 100 ps timescales. These are largely broadened with regard to the Lorentzian shape caused by simple Debye‐type relaxation, and are well described by the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts stretched exponential function. The fast mode is assigned to water reorientation comprising bulk water as well as hydration water. Even when all water molecules are in contact with the solute, this fast component is dominant, and its mean relaxation time is retarded by less than a factor of two relative to neat water. The amplitude of the slow process is far higher than expected for the dipolar reorientation of the solute. The observations are consistent with results from molecular dynamics simulations for a similar model peptide reported in the literature. They suggest that the slow relaxation mode is mainly founded in peptide–water dipolar couplings, with some additional contribution from slowly reorienting hydration water molecules. The results are discussed with regard to the hydration dynamics of proteins and the interpretation of dielectric spectra of protein solutions.  相似文献

Dielectric relaxation and Brillouin scattering are jointly used in studying molecular relaxation in poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and its solutions in methylcyclohexane. The dielectric method was applied to the more concentrated (100%, 80%, 60%, by volume) solutions over a wide temperature and frequency range (30 Hz to 8 GHz) in order that the variation in activation energy characteristic of a glass-forming substance could be delineated. The present work extends previous work on the undiluted polymer to higher frequencies so that range of 12 decades in the dielectric loss maximum fmax as a function of temperature is now available. The “Antoine” equation is found to represent the behavior of log fmax, of the bulk concentrated solutions very well. The more dilute (40%, 20%) solutions were studied only in the high-frequency (GHz) region since phase separation occurred at low temperatures. Both the temperature and dilution effects were interpreted in terms of free-volume theory. Brillouin scattering spectra were obtained at several scattering angles and a wide range of temperatures. A maximum in the curve of hypersonic attenuation versus temperature was observed in each polymer solution. The attenuation maximum shifts toward lower temperature upon dilution, in agreement with the dielectric relaxation result. The Brillouin scattering follows different activation parameters and evidences a more rapid process than does the dielectric relaxation. It is speculated that it monitors a secondary or subglass relaxation, due perhaps, to damped torsional oscillations.  相似文献

Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to examine high-frequency dynamical behavior of aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) (Mw ≈ 400g/mol) at 298K in the entire concentration region. It was found that a relaxation process takes place in the experimental frequency window that significantly affects the shape of experimentally recorded spectrum of the density fluctuations (dynamical structure factor). The process detected was attributed to segmental motion of the flexible polymeric chain. The full spectrum analysis of Brillouin spectra has been performed taking advantage of the relaxation function previously used in describing a single relaxation process in dielectric examination of water solutions of PEG 400. The proposed data processing procedure permits a qualitative reproduction of concentration dependencies of the hypersonic wave velocity and absorption measured. The shapes of the concentration dependencies of the relaxation times obtained from the Brillouin and the dielectric spectroscopies are in good agreement over a very broad concentration range, although their absolute values are scaled by the factor of 3. This result indicate that the two processes revealed independently by dielectric and Brillouin spectroscopies, apparently separated in time-scale, are just the same relaxation process.  相似文献

The dielectric spectra of the glass former, m-fluoroaniline (m-FA), at ambient pressure show the presence of a secondary relaxation, which was identified in the literature as the universal Johari-Goldstein (JG) beta relaxation. However, published elastic neutron scattering and simulation data [D. Morineau, C. Alba-Simionesco, M. C. Bellisent-Funel, and M. F. Lauthie, Europhys. Lett. 43, 195 (1998); D. Morineau and C. Alba-Simionesco, J. Chem. Phys. 109, 8494 (1998)] showed the presence of hydrogen-bond-induced clusters of limited size in m-FA at ambient pressure and temperature of the dielectric measurements. The observed secondary relaxation may originate from the hydrogen-bond-induced clusters. If so, it should not be identified with the JG beta relaxation that involves essentially all parts of the molecule and has certain characteristics [K. L. Ngai and M. Paluch, J. Chem. Phys. 120, 857 (2004)], but then arises the question of where is the supposedly universal JG beta relaxation in m-FA. To gain a better understanding and resolving the problem, we perform dielectric measurements at elevated pressures and temperatures to suppress the hydrogen-bond-induced clusters and find significant changes in the dielectric spectra. The secondary relaxation observed at ambient pressure in m-FA is suppressed, indicating that indeed it originates from the hydrogen-bond-induced clusters. The spectra of m-FA are transformed at high temperature and pressure to become similar to that of toluene. The new secondary relaxation that emerges in the spectra has properties of a genuine JG relaxation like in toluene.  相似文献

We investigated the frequency dependent dielectric relaxation behaviors of anhydrous trehalose and maltose glasses in the temperature range which covers a supercooled and glassy states. In addition to the α-, Johari-Goldstein (JG) β-, and γ-relaxations in a typical glass forming system, we observed an extra relaxation process between JG β- and γ-relaxations in the dielectric loss spectra. We found that the unknown extra relaxation is a unique property of disaccharide which might originate from the intramolecular motion of flexible glycosidic bond. We also found that the temperature dependence of the JG β-relaxation time changes at 0.95T(g) and it might be universal.  相似文献

The experimentally observed characteristic features of the alpha-relaxation process in glass-forming liquids are the non-Arrhenius behavior of the structural relaxation times and the non-Debye character of the macroscopic relaxation function. The Avramov model in which relaxation is considered as an energy activation process of surmounting random barriers in liquid energy landscape was successfully applied to describe the temperature and pressure dependences of the macroscopic relaxation times or viscosity. In this paper, we consider the dielectric spectrum associated with Avramov model. The asymmetrical broadening of the loss spectra was found to be related directly to dispersion of the energy barrier distribution. However, it turns out that temperature dependence of the spectrum broadening as predicted by the Avromov model is at odds to experimental observation in glass-forming liquids.  相似文献

In order to investigate the role of solid morphology on molecular relaxation in crystaline polymers, the effect of melting on the α relaxation in poly(hexamethylene sebacamide) (nylon 610) was measured dielectrically. It was found that the α loss peak was continuous into the melt with respect to location in the frequency-temperature domain and with respect to the shape of the peak. However, the strength of the process, as measured by the difference in the relaxed and unrelaxed dielectric constants, was discontinuous on melting, the process being much stronger in the melt. These observations are consistent with a two-phase model of discrete crystalline and amorphous regions. The relaxation takes place in the amorphous regions, and melting creates more of this material but does not greatly after its nature. The correlation of the amount of amorphous material as measured by dielectric relaxation with that infrared from density measurements is discussed for nylon610, polyoxymethylene, and poly(ethylene oxide).  相似文献

The impact of the physical aging process on the electrical and thermal properties of semicrystalline polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) was investigated by means of thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The TSDC technique was used to study the relaxation modes of PBT in the temperature range ?50° to + 120°C. The obtained spectra revealed two peaks located at temperature maxima of 45° and 93°C. The peak appearing at 45°C corresponds to the dielectric manifestation of the glass transition phenomenon (α-relaxation). The aim of this work is to study the effect of physical aging on this relaxation. The recording of TSDC peaks of aged PBT at different temperatures for different times revealed a reduction in their intensities and their shift towards higher temperatures when the aging becomes significant. This result can be explained by the diminution of molecular chain mobility, which is directly related to the area under the peak representing the polarization of the sample. This result was confirmed by DSC measurements, which revealed the growth and the shift of the peak, which is superimposed on the jump of the heat capacity, located around 38°C and characteristic of the glass transition, towards higher temperatures where aging becomes significant.  相似文献

Charge transport and dipolar relaxations in a sodium-based oligoether carboxylate ionic liquid are investigated in a wide frequency and temperature range by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). The dielectric spectra are described at lower temperatures in terms of dipolar relaxations whereas hopping conduction in a random spatially varying energy landscape is quantitatively shown to dominate the spectra at higher temperatures. Based on detailed analysis of the dielectric relaxation strength in its temperature dependence, the slower secondary relaxation process is attributed to molecular fluctuation of ion pairs (sodium and carboxylate ions) while the localized motion of the carboxylate anion gives rise to the faster process observed.  相似文献
