Homologous series of liquid crystalline azoesters and azomethine esters consisting of a (S)‐1‐methylpropyl group attached in one of the terminal positions have been synthesized and thermally characterized. All twenty‐four derivatives from both series, namely, the 4‐(4‐n‐alkoxybenzoyloxy)‐4′‐1‐(S)‐methylpropylazobenzenes and 4‐(4‐n‐alkoxybenzoyloxy)benzylidene‐4′‐1‐(S)‐methylpropylanilines exhibit mesomorphism. The lower members of the homologous series show a chiral nematic phase while the higher members show smectic C*, smectic A as well as chiral nematic mesophases. The homologues have been characterized using IR, NMR and UV‐Visible, spectroscopies, X‐ray diffraction and DSC. Their mesomorphic properties are compared with those of structurally related homologous series.  相似文献

Experimental values of the mean polarizability of molecules, [`(g)]\bar \gamma , and components of the Lorentz tensor, L j , in the nematic and smectic A phases are obtained for a homologous series of n-alkyl-p-(4-ethoxybenzylideneamino)-α-methylcinnamates. Dependences of the [`(g)]\bar \gamma and L j values on the mesophase temperature, the orientational order parameter S of molecules, and the number n in the homologous series are revealed. The quadratic dependence of [`(g)]\bar \gamma (S) in the nematic and smectic phases is established that is invariant with respect to the nematic-smectic A transition. Polarizability densities of the molecular core and the alkyl chain are found from the monotone decreasing dependence [`(g)]\bar \gamma (n)/v (where v is volume per one molecule) in the smectic phase. The presence (or absence) of the odd-even alternation of L j (n) in the nematic (smectic) phase is shown. A monotone decrease in the Lorentz tensor anisotropy L with an increase in n is revealed in the smectic phase, and limiting values L j (n → ∞) are determined.  相似文献

Thirteen compounds with ester and amide linkages were synthesized and their mesogenic properties evaluated. Methyl to n‐propyl derivatives exhibit nematic phases, n‐butyl to n‐decyl derivatives exhibit smectic and nematic mesophases, whereas n‐dodecyl to n‐octadecyl derivatives exhibit only smectic phases. All the smectic homologues exhibit smectic C phases. Middle members of the homologous series exhibit polymorphism of smectic mesophase. A plot of transition temperatures versus number of carbon atoms in the alkoxy chain reveals an odd–even effect for nematic–isotropic transition temperatures. Nematic–isotropic and smectic–cholesteric thermal stabilities of the prepared compounds (series I) are higher compared to those of previously reported compounds, series A, B and C. The results indicate that a simple reversal of a central linkage has a dramatic effect on the appearance of smectic mesophase in a homologous series. The structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, thin‐layer chromatography and spectral data.  相似文献

Two new mesogenic homologous series are synthesized from methoxyethyl 4-(4′-hydroxyphenylazo) benzoate. In series I the phenolic -OH group is alkylated, whereas in series II it is esterified with 4-n-alkoxybenzoyl group. In series I, all the nine members synthesized exhibit only enantiotropic smectic A mesophase. In series II, all the twelve homologues exhibit enantiotropic nematic mesophase. Smectic A mesophase appears from then-decyloxy derivative as a enantiotropic phase and persists till the last n-hexadecyloxy member. The mesomorphic properties of both the series are compared with each other and also with the properties of other structurally related series to evaluate the effect of the methoxyethyl tail on mesomorphism.  相似文献

Abstract

The first eleven members of the homologous series of α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)-ω-(4-n-alkylanilinebenzylidene-4'-oxy)hexanes have been synthesized. The compounds are all enantiotropic nematogens and, with the exception of the heptyl, octyl and nonyl homologues, exhibit smectic phases. The thermal stability of the smectic A phase initially increases with the length of the terminal alkyl chain, passes through a maximum and then falls dramatically before disappearing. The smectic A phase subsequently reappears with the decyl homologue which has the highest smectic A-nematic transition temperature of the series. In order to understand this unusual behavior we have determined the entropies of transition for the compounds and we have measured the layer spacing of the smectic A phase for three of them.  相似文献

Two new mesogenic homologous series of quinazolone derivatives have been synthesised by condensation of 4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy benzaldehyde (for series I) / 4-n-alkoxy-3-methoxybenzoyloxy benzaldehyde (for series II) with 3-amino-2-methyl quinazolone in alcohol. The synthesised compounds are characterised by a combination of elemental analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. In series I, all the synthesised members exhibit the nematic mesophase. An enantiotropic smectic A phase is observed from the n-decyloxy derivative onward to the last homologue synthesised. Methoxy to n-propyloxy derivatives of series II are non-mesogenic, whereas the rest of the members exhibit a monotropic nematic mesophase. The mesomorphic properties of the present series I and II are compared with each other and with the other structurally related mesogenic homologous series to evaluate the effect of lateral methoxy substituent and quinazolone moiety on mesomorphism.  相似文献

Two new mesogenic homologous series of liquid crystalline cinnamates with substituted ethyl tails, β‐methoxyethyl [4‐(4′‐n‐alkoxycinnamoyloxy)benzoates (I) and β‐chloroethyl [4‐(4′‐n‐alkoxycinnamoyloxy)benzoates (II), have been synthesized and characterized by a combination of elemental analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. In series I, lower‐chain members exhibit nematic mesophase, middle members exhibit enantiotropic nematic as well as smectic A (SmA) mesophases, whereas higher members exhibit only an enantiotropic SmA mesophase. In series II, methoxy to n‐butyloxy derivatives exhibit a monotropic nematic mesophase. The SmA mesophase commences from n‐propyloxy derivative as monotropic and persists up to the last member synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of present series were compared with each other and with a structurally related mesogenic homologous series to evaluate the effects of substituted ethyl tail and cinnamoyloxy central linkage on mesomorphism.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of a series of new rod-shaped liquid crystal (LC), 2-(4-alkyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles possessing even number of carbon atoms at the alkyloxy chain (CnH2n?+?1O-, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) are reported. The molecular structures of title compounds were elucidated using FTIR and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The phase behaviour of these new compounds was characterised and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. Lower members (n = 2, 4 and 6) did not exhibit mesophase. Octyloxy derivative was monotropic LC. Enantiotropic smectic A phase was observed from n-decyloxy derivatives onward to the last homologous synthesised.  相似文献

A new homologous series of λ-shaped mesogenic azo esters with polar chloro- and nitro- substituents has been synthesised by attaching a rigid 2-chloro-4-nitrophenylazo group to a resorcinol moiety by a central azo linkage. Both phenolic hydroxyl groups are esterified by 4-n-alkoxybenzoyl groups. All the compounds synthesised have been characterised using a combination of elemental analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. The mesomorphic properties of the compounds have been determined by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The lower members of the series are non-mesogenic, the middle members exhibit a nematic mesophase, and higher members exhibit a smectic A mesophase. The effect of polar chloro-, nitro-, and long lateral aromatic substituents, on mesomorphism is discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the synthesis and characterisation of two new mesogenic homologous series, β-chloroethyl 4-(4′-n-alkoxyphenylazo) benzoates (I) and the β-chloroethyl [4-(4′-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)phenylazo]-4”-benzoates (II), containing a terminal β-chloro ethyl chain. Series I was synthesised by alkylation of β-chloroethyl 4-(4′-hydroxy phenylazo) benzoate with an appropriate alkyl halide, whereas series II was synthesised by esterification of β-chloroethyl 4-(4′-hydroxyphenylazo) benzoate with an appropriate 4-n-alkoxybenzoic acid. The molecular structures of these new compounds of both the series were characterised by combination of element analysis and a standard spectroscopic method. The mesomorphic behaviour was studied mainly by use of a polarised microscope and, in some cases, differential scanning calorimeter as well. In series I, all nine members synthesised exhibited only an enantiotropic smectic A mesophase. In series II, all 12 homologues exhibited an enantiotropic nematic mesophase; a smectic A phase appeared in the n-octyloxy derivative as an enantiotropic phase and persisted through to the n-hexadecyloxy member. The mesomorphic properties of both series were compared with each other and also with the properties of other structurally related series to evaluate the effects of the β-chloroethyl tail on mesomorphism.  相似文献
