The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of management’s strategic choice of asset and liability composition in life insurance on shortfall risk and the shareholders’ fair risk charge. In contrast to previous work, we focus on the effectiveness of management decisions regarding the product mix and the riskiness of the asset side under different surplus appropriation schemes. We propose a model setting that comprises temporary life annuities and endowment insurance contracts. Our numerical results show that the effectiveness of management decisions in regard to risk reduction strongly depends on the surplus appropriation scheme offered to the customer and their impact on guaranteed benefit payments, which thus presents an important control variable for the insurer.  相似文献

The valuation of options embedded in insurance contracts using concepts from financial mathematics (in particular, from option pricing theory), typically referred to as fair valuation, has recently attracted considerable interest in academia as well as among practitioners. The aim of this article is to investigate the valuation of participating and unit-linked life insurance contracts, which are characterized by embedded rate guarantees and bonus distribution rules. In contrast to the existing literature, our approach models the dynamics of the reference portfolio by means of an exponential Lévy process. Our analysis sheds light on the impact of the dynamics of the reference portfolio on the fair contract value for several popular types of insurance policies. Moreover, it helps to assess the potential risk arising from misspecification of the stochastic process driving the reference portfolio.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the impact of different asset management and surplus distribution strategies in life insurance on risk-neutral pricing and shortfall risk. In general, these feedback mechanisms affect the contract’s payoff and hence directly influence pricing and risk measurement. To isolate the effect of such strategies on shortfall risk, we calibrate contract parameters so that the compared contracts have the same market value and same default-value-to-liability ratio. This way, the fair valuation method is extended since, in addition to the contract’s market value, the default put option value is fixed. We then compare shortfall probability and expected shortfall and show the substantial impact of different management mechanisms acting on the asset and liability side.  相似文献

Over the last years, the valuation of life insurance contracts using concepts from financial mathematics has become a popular research area for actuaries as well as financial economists. In particular, several methods have been proposed of how to model and price participating policies, which are characterized by an annual interest rate guarantee and some bonus distribution rules. However, despite the long terms of life insurance products, most valuation models allowing for sophisticated bonus distribution rules and the inclusion of frequently offered options assume a simple Black–Scholes setup and, more specifically, deterministic or even constant interest rates.We present a framework in which participating life insurance contracts including predominant kinds of guarantees and options can be valuated and analyzed in a stochastic interest rate environment. In particular, the different option elements can be priced and analyzed separately. We use Monte Carlo and discretization methods to derive the respective values.The sensitivity of the contract and guarantee values with respect to multiple parameters is studied using the bonus distribution schemes as introduced in [Bauer, D., Kiesel, R., Kling, A., Ruß, J., 2006. Risk-neutral valuation of participating life insurance contracts. Insurance: Math. Econom. 39, 171–183]. Surprisingly, even though the value of the contract as a whole is only moderately affected by the stochasticity of the short rate of interest, the value of the different embedded options is altered considerably in comparison to the value under constant interest rates. Furthermore, using a simplified asset portfolio and empirical parameter estimations, we show that the proportion of stock within the insurer’s asset portfolio substantially affects the value of the contract.  相似文献

The fair pricing of explicit and implicit options in life insurance products has received broad attention in the academic literature over the past years. Participating life insurance (PLI) contracts have been the focus especially. These policies are typically characterized by a term life insurance, a minimum interest rate guarantee, and bonus participation rules with regard to the insurer’s asset returns or reserve situation. Researchers replicate these bonus policies quite differently. We categorize and formally present the most common PLI bonus distribution mechanisms. These bonus models closely mirror the Danish, German, British, and Italian regulatory framework. Subsequently, we perform a comparative analysis of the different bonus models with regard to risk valuation. We calibrate contract parameters so that the compared contracts have a net present value of zero and the same safety level as the initial position, using risk-neutral valuation. Subsequently, we analyze the effect of changes in the asset volatility and in the initial reserve amount (per contract) on the value of the default put option (DPO), while keeping all other parameters constant. Our results show that DPO values obtained with the PLI bonus distribution model of Bacinello (2001), which replicates the Italian regulatory framework, are most sensitive to changes in volatility and initial reserves.  相似文献

信用风险和利率风险是相互关联影响的。资产组合优化不能将这两种风险单独考虑或简单的相加,应该进行整体的风险控制,不然会造成投资风险的低估。本文的主要工作:一是在强度式定价模型的框架下,分别利用CIR随机利率模型刻画利率风险因素“无风险利率”和信用风险因素“违约强度”的随机动态变化,衡量在两类风险共同影响下信用债券的市场价值,从而构建CRRA型投资效用函数。以CRRA型投资效用函数最大化作为目标函数,同时控制利率和信用两类风险。弥补了现有研究中仅单独考虑信用风险或利率风险、无法对两种风险进行整体控制的弊端。二是将无风险利率作为影响违约强度的一个因子,利用“无风险利率因子”和“纯信用因子”的双因子CIR模型拟合违约强度,考虑了市场利率变化对于债券违约强度的影响,反映两种风险的相关性。使得投资组合模型中既同时考虑了信用风险和利率风险、又考虑了两种风险的交互影响。避免在优化资产组合时忽略两种风险间相关性、可能造成风险低估的问题。  相似文献

We discuss extensions of reduced-form and structural models for pricing credit risky securities to portfolio simulation and valuation. Stochasticity in interest rates and credit spreads is captured via reduced-form models and is incorporated with a default and migration model based on the structural credit risk modelling approach. Calculated prices are consistent with observed prices and the term structure of default-free and defaultable interest rates. Three applications are discussed: (i) study of the inter-temporal price sensitivity of credit bonds and the sensitivity of future portfolio valuation with respect to changes in interest rates, default probabilities, recovery rates and rating migration, (ii) study of the structure of credit risk by investigating the impact of disparate risk factors on portfolio risk, and (iii) tracking of corporate bond indices via simulation and optimisation models. In particular, we study the effect of uncertainty in credit spreads and interest rates on the overall risk of a credit portfolio, a topic that has been recently discussed by Kiesel et al. [The structure of credit risk: spread volatility and ratings transitions. Technical report, Bank of England, ISSN 1268-5562, 2001], but has been otherwise mostly neglected. We find that spread risk and interest rate risk are important factors that do not diversify away in a large portfolio context, especially when high-quality instruments are considered.  相似文献

We consider the pricing of long-dated insurance contracts under stochastic interest rates and stochastic volatility. In particular, we focus on the valuation of insurance options with long-term equity or foreign exchange exposures. Our modeling framework extends the stochastic volatility model of Schöbel and Zhu (1999) by including stochastic interest rates. Moreover, we allow all driving model factors to be instantaneously correlated with each other, i.e. we allow for a general correlation structure between the instantaneous interest rates, the volatilities and the underlying stock returns. As insurance products often incorporate long-term exposures, they are typically more sensitive to changes in the interest rates, volatility and currencies. Therefore, having the flexibility to correlate the underlying asset price with both the stochastic volatility and the stochastic interest rates, yields a realistic model which is of practical importance for the pricing and hedging of such long-term contracts. We show that European options, typically used for the calibration of the model to market prices, and forward starting options can be priced efficiently and in closed-form by means of Fourier inversion techniques. We extensively discuss the numerical implementation of these pricing formulas, allowing for a fast and accurate valuation of European and forward starting options. The model will be especially useful for the pricing and risk management of insurance contracts and other exotic derivatives involving long-term maturities.  相似文献

Since weather-related disasters have an upward trend-cycle movement and the global financial crisis has revealed the severity of counterparty risk, this study reinvestigates and incorporates the catastrophe characteristics and counterparty risk into the valuation of catastrophe products. First, the excess of loss reinsurance is traditionally used to reduce catastrophe risk. Its premium is estimated under these catastrophe characteristics. Second, this paper looks into the price of catastrophe futures and spread option contracts that are based on a catastrophe index. The (re)insurer can apply these exchange-traded derivatives to reduce catastrophe risk without counterparty risk. Third, this paper takes counterparty risk into account to value catastrophe bonds and catastrophe equity puts. Thus, the fair valuations of these two instruments are revealed to the buyer.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a bond valuation model with both credit risk and liquidity risk to show that credit spreads are not negligible for short maturities. We adopt the structural approach to model credit risk, where the default triggering barrier is determined endogenously by maximizing equity value. As for liquidity risk, we assume that bondholders may encounter liquidity shocks during the lifetime of corporate bonds, and have to sell the bond immediately at the price, which is assumed to be a fraction of the price in a perfectly liquid market. Under this framework, we derive explicit expressions for corporate bond, firm value and bankruptcy trigger. Finally, numerical illustrations are presented.  相似文献

For the treatment of specific interest rate risk, a risk model is suggested, quantifying and combining both market and credit risk components consistently. The market risk model is based on credit spreads derived from traded bond prices. Though traded bond prices reveal a maximum amount of issuer specific information, illiquidity problems do not allow for classical parameter estimation in this context. To overcome this difficulty an efficient multiple imputation method is proposed that also quantifies the amount of risk associated with missing data. The credit risk component is based on event risk caused by correlated rating migrations of individual bonds using a Copula function approach.  相似文献

This paper examines the impact of three surplus appropriation schemes often inherent in participating life insurance contracts on the insurer’s shortfall risk and the net present value from an insured’s viewpoint. (1) In case of the bonus system, surplus is used to increase the guaranteed death and survival benefit, leading to higher reserves; (2) the interest-bearing accumulation increases only the survival benefit by accumulating the surplus on a separate account; and (3) surplus can also be used to shorten the contract term, which results in an earlier payment of the survival benefit and a reduced sum of premium payments. The pool of participating life insurance contracts with death and survival benefit is modeled actuarially with annual premium payments; mortality rates are generated based on an extension of the Lee-Carter (1992) model, and the asset process follows a geometric Brownian motion. In a simulation analysis, we then compare the influence of different asset portfolios and shocks to mortality on the insurer’s risk situation and the policyholder’s net present value for the three surplus schemes. Our findings demonstrate that, even though the surplus distribution and thus the amount of surplus is calculated the same way, the type of surplus appropriation scheme has a substantial impact on the insurer’s risk exposure and the policyholder’s net present value.  相似文献

We consider the pricing of life insurance contracts under stochastic mortality and interest rates assumed not independent of each other. Employing the method of change of measure together with the Bayes’ rule for conditional expectations, solution expressions for the value of common contracts are obtained. A demonstration of how to apply our proposed stochastic modelling approach to value survival and death benefits is provided. Using the Human Mortality Database and UK interest rates, we illustrate that the dependence between interest rate and mortality dynamics has considerable impact in the value of even a simple survival benefit.  相似文献

In this communication, we review the fair value-based accounting framework promoted by the IASB Insurance Project for the case of a life insurance company. In particular, for the case of a simple participating contract with minimum guarantee, we show that the fair valuation process allows for the identification of a suitable safety loading to hedge against default risk; furthermore, we show that, when compared with the “traditional” accounting system based on the construction of mathematical reserves, the fair value approach offers a sounder reporting framework in terms of covering of the liability, implementation costs, volatility of assets and liabilities and solvency capital requirements.  相似文献

The valuation and hedging of participating life insurance policies, also known as with-profits policies, is considered. Such policies can be seen as European path-dependent contingent claims whose underlying security is the investment portfolio of the insurance company that sold the policy. The fair valuation of these policies is studied under the assumption that the insurance company has the right to modify the investment strategy of the underlying portfolio at any time. Furthermore, it is assumed that the issuer of the policy does not setup a separate portfolio to hedge the risk associated with the policy. Instead, the issuer will use its discretion about the investment strategy of the underlying portfolio to hedge shortfall risks. In that sense, the insurer’s investment portfolio serves simultaneously as the underlying security and as the hedge portfolio. This means that the hedging problem can not be separated from the valuation problem. We investigate the relationship between risk-neutral valuation and hedging of these policies in complete and incomplete financial markets.  相似文献

We recast the valuation of annuities and life insurance contracts under mortality and interest rates, both of which are stochastic, as a problem of solving a system of linear equations with random perturbations. A sequence of uniform approximations is developed which allows for fast and accurate computation of expected values. Our reformulation of the valuation problem provides a general framework which can be employed to find insurance premiums and annuity values covering a wide class of stochastic models for mortality and interest rate processes. The proposed approach provides a computationally efficient alternative to Monte Carlo based valuation in pricing mortality-linked contingent claims.  相似文献

Dynamic hybrid life insurance products are intended to meet new consumer needs regarding stability in terms of guarantees as well as sufficient upside potential. In contrast to traditional participating or classical unit-linked life insurance products, the guarantee offered to the policyholders is achieved by a periodical rebalancing process between three funds: the policy reserves (i.e. the premium reserve stock, thus causing interaction effects with traditional participating life insurance contracts), a guarantee fund, and an equity fund. In this paper, we consider an insurer offering both, dynamic hybrid and traditional participating life insurance contracts and focus on the policyholders’ perspective. The results show that higher guarantees do not necessarily imply a higher willingness-to-pay, but that in case of dynamic hybrid contracts, a minimum guarantee level should be offered in order to ensure that the willingness-to-pay exceeds the minimum premium the insurer has to charge when selling the contract. In addition, strong interaction effects can be found between the two products, which particularly impact the willingness-to-pay of the dynamic hybrids.  相似文献

As a result of storability restrictions, the price risk management of flow commodities (such as natural gas, oil, and electrical power) is by no means a trivial matter.To protect price spikes, consumers purchase diverse swing-type contracts, whereas contract writers try to hedge themselves by appropriate physical assets, for instance, using storage utilities, through transmission and/or production capacities. However, the correct valuation of such contacts and their physical counterparts is still under lively debate. In this approach, an axiomatic setting to discuss price dynamics for flow commodity contracts is suggested. By means of a minimal set of reasonable assumptions we suggest a framework where the standard change-of-numeraire transformation converts a flow commodity market into a market consisting of zero bonds and some additional risky asset. Utilizing this structure, we apply the toolkit of interest rate theory to price the availability of production capacity on a flow commodity.This research is supported by the Swiss Innovation Promotion Agency KTI/CTI.  相似文献
