The filling‐type membrane is composed of grafted polymer and solvent‐resistant substrate; the calculation of solubility, diffusivity and swelling‐suppression effect by the substrate permits the prediction of solvent permeability. As noted in our previous article, the use of this approach, called membrane design, resulted in accurate prediction of the permeability of aromatic compounds. In this study, the influence of hydrogen bonding on solubility and diffusivity is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The solubility of chloroform and dichloromethane in poly(acrylate)s increases, and their diffusivity decreases, compared with that estimated without considering the hydrogen‐bonding effect. Solubilities predicted by the lattice‐fluid hydrogen‐bonding (LFHB) model show good agreement with the results of vapor sorption. Comparison of diffusion coefficients measured by vapor permeation with those predicted from free volume theory reveals that the decrease of solvent diffusion coefficient is approximately proportional to the fraction of associated molecules. Fluxes of chloroform and dichloromethane were measured by vapor permeation experiments through filling‐type acrylate membranes, and predictions agree well with experiments. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sol-gel polyimide-silica composite membrane: gas transport properties   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effect of introduction of silica particles prepared by the sol-gel technique on the gas transport properties of a polyimide film was studied. The sorption and permeation of N2, O2, CO2, H2 and CH4 were studied and correlated with morphological changes in the polymer structure. From sorption isotherms, we observed that the composite membrane presents higher solubility coefficients than the polyimide one. The solubility coefficient ratio between the composite and the polyimide is about 1.5–2.0. The isotherms were analyzed in terms of the dual mode sorption. The Henry's coefficient and the Langmuir's affinity and saturation constants were obtained allowing to calculate the Langmuir to Henry concentration ratios as function of the gas pressure. These ratios decrease until zero within a certain pressure range as long as the Langmuir's mode is acting and they are higher for the polyimide membrane when compared with the composite one. This study was completed with calorimetric measurements during the sorption. The gas interaction energy in kJ/mol decreases within the same pressure range as previously described. The measured energies are higher for the polyimide film when compared with the composite one because the polyimide membrane presents a stronger energetic effect caused by a higher Langmuir's contribution. From permeation studies at 3.155 Pa, the composite membrane showed higher permeability coefficients and permselectivities than the polyimide one. All these results were explained, taking into account the difference on the imidization degree of both membranes and the morphological changes which may be induced by the silica nodules in the organic/inorganic interphases.  相似文献

This paper studies the diffusive and sorption steps of several gases across membranes cast from poly(N-phenyl-exo,endo-norbornene-5,6-dicarboximide) chloroform solutions. Chains packing effects on gas transport was investigated by conducting a parallel study on the permeation characteristics of membranes cast from hydrogenated poly(N-phenyl-exo,endo-norbornene-5,6-dicarboximide) chloroform solutions. The permeability coefficients of several gases in the two membranes were measured finding that hydrogenation of the norbornene moieties decreases gas permeability. The transition states approach was used to determine the trajectories of the gases in the two types of membranes from which the diffusion coefficients were obtained. Monte Carlo techniques based on the Widom method were used to simulate gas sorption process as a function of pressure. The values of the solubility coefficients thus obtained undergo a relatively sharp drop at low pressures approaching to a constant value as pressure increases. With the exception of carbon dioxide, pretty good agreement between the experimental and simulated values of the permeability coefficient is found for the gases studied.  相似文献

Ion beam irradiation has been widely used to modify the structure and properties of membrane surface layers. In this study, the gas permeability and selectivity of an asymmetric polyimide membrane modified by He ion irradiation were investigated using a high vacuum apparatus equipped with a Baratron absolute pressure gauge at 76 cmHg and 35 °C. Specifically, we estimated the effects of the gas diffusion and solubility on the gas permeation properties of the asymmetric membranes with the carbonized skin layer prepared by ion irradiation. The asymmetric polyimide membranes were prepared by a dry–wet phase inversion process, and the surface skin layer on the membrane was irradiated by He ions at fluences of 1 × 1015 to 5 × 1015 ions/cm2 at 50 keV. The increase in the gas permeability of the He+‐irradiated asymmetric polyimide membrane is entirely due to an increase in the gas diffusion, and the gas selectivity increases of the membranes were responsible for the high gas diffusion selectivities. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To confirm the validity of the working assumption that a thin dense skin layer in an asymmetric membrane can be essentially replaced by a thick homogeneous dense membrane, both homogeneous and asymmetric polysulfone membranes were prepared by solvent casting, and the permeation behavior of carbon dioxide through these two types of membranes was investigated. The pressure dependence of the mean permeability coefficient through an asymmetric polysulfone membrane is apparently very similar to that through a homogeneous dense membrane, following the dual mode mobility model driven by gradients of chemical potential. The dense skin layer in the asymmetric membrane can be simulated approximately by a homogeneous dense membrane from the point of view of gas sorption and diffusion.  相似文献

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most commonly used membrane material for the separation of condensable vapors from lighter gases. In this study, a composite PDMS membrane was prepared and its gas permeation properties were investigated at various upstream pressures. A microporous cellulose acetate (CA) support was initially prepared and characterized. Then, PDMS solution, containing crosslinker and catalyst, was cast over the support. Sorption and permeation of C3H8, CO2, CH4, and H2 in the prepared composite membrane were measured. Using sorption and permeation data of gases, diffusion coefficients were calculated based on solution‐diffusion mechanism. Similar to other rubbery membranes, the prepared PDMS membrane advantageously exhibited less resistance to permeation of heavier gases, such as C3H8, compared to the lighter ones, such as CO2, CH4, and H2. This result was attributed to the very high solubility of larger gas molecules in the hydrocarbon‐based PDMS membrane in spite of their lower diffusion coefficients relative to smaller molecules. Increasing feed pressure increased permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients of the heavier gases while decreased those of the lighter ones. At constant temperature (25°C), empirical linear relations were proposed for permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients as a function of transmembrane pressure. C3H8/gas solubility, diffusivity, and overall selectivities were found to increase with increasing feed pressure. Ideal selectivity values of 9, 30, and 82 for C3H8 over CO2, CH4, and H2, respectively, at an upstream pressure of 8 atm, confirmed the outstanding separation performance of the prepared membrane. Summary: The aim of the study was to investigate the variation in total surface area, porosity, pore size, Knudsen and surface diffusion coefficients, gas permeability and selectivity before and after the application of sol-gel process to porous ceramic membrane in order to determine the effect of pore modification. In this study, three different sol-gel process were applied to the ceramic support separately; one was the silica sol-gel process which was applied to increase porosity, others were silica-sol dip coating and silica-sol processing methods which were applied to decrease pore size. As a result of this, total surface area, pore size and porosity of ceramic support and membranes were determined by using BET instrument. In addition to this, Knudsen and surface diffusion coefficients were also calculated. After then, ceramic support and membranes were exposed to gas permeation experiments by using the CO2 gas with different flow rates. Gas permeability and selectivity of those membranes were measured according to the data obtained. Thus, pore surface area, porosity, pore size and Knudsen diffusion coefficient of membrane treated with silica sol-gel process increased while total surface area was decreasing. Therefore, permeability of ceramic support and membrane treated with silica sol-gel process increased, and selectivity decreased with increasing the gas flow rate. Also, surface area, porosity, pore size, permeability, selectivity, Knudsen and surface diffusion coefficients of membranes treated with silica-sol dip coating and silica-sol processing methods were determined. As a result of this, porosity, pore size, Knudsen and surface diffusion coefficients decreased, total surface area increased in both methods. However, viscous flow and Knudsen flow permeability were detected as a consequence of gas permeability test and Knudsen flow was found to be a dominant transport mechanism in addition to surface diffusive flow owing to the small pore diameter in both methods. It was observed that silica-sol processing method had lower pore diameter and higher surface diffusion coefficient than silica-sol dip coating method.  相似文献

The permeability coefficient for the transport of a gas, vapor, or liquid through a polymer film is the product of the penetrant solubility and a diffusion coefficient. A transient permeation experiment known as the time-lag technique can be used to separate this product, provided the diffusion coefficient is independent of penetrant concentration. In this well-known experiment the polymer is initially free of penetrant. A new transient permeation experiment where the polymer is initially saturated with penetrant is suggested here. A general mathematical proof is given to show that by using the results form these two transient experiments which have different initial conditions one can determine the penetrant solubility no matter how the diffusion coefficient depends on penetrant concentration. Also one can determine two different concentration averaged diffusion coefficients from the results.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) membranes of different fractional free volume (FFV) were prepared by dry casting from different solvents. Free volume data were determined by means of Bondi method and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). It was found that both the boiling point and the solubility parameter of casting solvent affect the membrane’s free volume. It was believed that the difference in free volume was arisen from the difference in polymer packing. The gas permeability is higher when membranes are cast from higher molecular weight PMMA. But the plasticizing effect of CO2 is less serious compared with the low molecular weight one. The high molecular weight PMMA membrane also has an extremely high O2/N2 selectivity, indicating its high structure uniformity. These results indicate that membranes made from polymer of higher molecular weight have the advantages of high permeability, gas selectivity and are less sensitive to CO2 plasticization. The intrinsic gas transport properties such as the permeability, solubility and diffusivity of O2, N2, and CO2 are measured or calculated. The effects of fractional free volume on membrane gas separation properties were investigated. It was found that the fractional free volume had no definite effects on gas solubility, but the gas permeability and diffusivity increased accordingly to the measured free volume.  相似文献

Both homogeneous and asymmetric polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were prepared by solvent casting. The sorption and permeation behavior of CO2, O2, and N2 using these two kinds of cast PES membranes and commercially available homogeneous PES film was investigated to extract the pressure dependence of gas permeability and the permselectivity for CO2 relative to N2, and to confirm the validity of the working assumption that a skin layer in an asymmetric membrane can be essentially replaced by a thick homogeneous dense membrane. The pressure dependence of the mean permeability coefficient to CO2 in homogeneous membranes obeys the dual-mode mobility model. The ideal separation factor for CO2 relative to N2 at an upstream pressure of 0.5 MPa attains ca. 40, while the permeability to CO2 is about 2.7 Barrer at the same upstream pressure. The same separation factor in asymmetric membranes amounts to 35. The diffusion behavior for the skin layer in an asymmetric membrane with a thin skin layer can be simulated approximately by that in a homogeneous dense membrane.

The permeability of polymer membranes to steroids was studied as a function of both permeant and membrane properties, using nine steroids and copolymer membranes prepared from poly(etherurethanes) and poly(ethylene vinyl acetates). Permeabilities, diffusion coefficients, and solubilities of the steroids in the membranes were determined in sorption—desorption and permeation experiments. Steroids with higher melting points permeated more slowly. This relationship originated from the lower diffusivities and solubilities of higher-melting steroids in the polymer phase; the effect of solubility changes was predominant. Reducing the polyether content of poly(etherurethane)merebranes ten-fold decreased their permeability to androstenedione by four orders of magnitude (from 10?10 to 10?14 g steroid/cm-sec at 37°C), due largely to diffusivity decreases. In contrast, reducing the vinyl acetate content of poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) membranes from 40% to 9% produced only modest changes in bath steroid solubility and diffusion coefficient. The permeability to androstenedione within this series of copolymer membranes ranged between 10?11 and 10?12 g steroid/cm-sec at 37°C.  相似文献

Sorption isotherms for carbon dioxide in a homogeneous dense cellulose acetate membrane were measured by the pressure decay method at three temperatures between 20 and 40°C and gas pressures up to 1.7 MPa. Steady-state permeation rates for the same system at three temperatures between 24 and 40°C and gas pressures up to 2.2 MPa were measured by the variable volume method. The equilibrium sorption was described well in terms of the dual-mode sorption model. The pressure dependence of the mean permeability coefficient was interpreted by the total immobilization model, i.e., a limiting case of the dual-mode mobility model, where the diffusion coefficient for the Henry's law mode is not assumed to be constant but depends upon gas pressure via a modified free-volume theory. The observed pressure dependence of the mean permeability coefficient through an asymmetric cellulose acetate membrane was very similar to that through a homogeneous dense membrane. The thin skin layer in the asymmetric membrane can be simulated by a homogeneous dense membrane from the point of view of gas sorption and diffusion.  相似文献

Desulphurization mechanism of polyethylene glycol (PEG) membranes has been investigated by the study of solubility and diffusion behavior of typical gasoline components through PEG membranes with various crosslinking degrees. The sorption, diffusion and permeation coefficients were calculated by the systematic studies of dynamic sorption curves of gasoline components such as thiophene, n-heptane, cyclohexane, cyclohexene and toluene in PEG membranes. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of diffusion and solubility coefficients and the influence of crosslinking degree on sorption and diffusion behaviors were conducted to elucidate the mass-transfer mechanism. According to the discussions on dynamic sorption curves, transport mode, activation energy and thermodynamic parameters, thiophene species were the preferential permeation components. Crosslinking is an effective modification way to improve the overall performance of PEG membranes applied in gasoline desulphurization. The pervaporation (PV) and gas chromatography (GC) experiments results corresponded to the conclusions. All these investigations will provide helpful suggestions for the newly emerged membrane desulphurization technology and complex organic mixture separation by pervaporation.  相似文献

The silicone rubber (SR) based graft copolymer, SR-graft-poly(acrylic acid) (SR-g-AA), was modified by incorporating silver ion (SR-g-AA-Ag+) for C4 olefin/paraffin gases separation. Olefin could be transported across the complex membrane by the silver ion facilitated transport. The permeation properties, as measured by gas chromatography equipped with a gas permeability analyzer, implied a facilitating effect for olefin. Typical trans-2-butene/n-butane selectivity in the 95.6% grafted complex membrane at 25°C is 4.0. Also, the influences of AA% grafting, measuring temperature and pressure to the permeation properties of C4 gases were studied. In addition, the sorption behaviors of C4 gases in SR based membranes are presented and discussed by the Flory-Huggins equation. Finally, the selectivity of solubility and diffusivity in these SR based membranes are also discussed.  相似文献

Methanol diffusion in two polymer electrolyte membranes, Nafion 117 and BPSH 40 (a 40% disulfonated wholly aromatic polyarylene ether sulfone), was measured using a modified pulsed field gradient NMR method. This method allowed for the diffusion coefficient of methanol within the membrane to be determined while immersed in a methanol solution of known concentration. A second set of gradient pulses suppressed the signal from the solvent in solution, thus allowing the methanol within the membrane to be monitored unambiguously. Over a methanol concentration range of 0.5–8 M, methanol diffusion coefficients in Nafion 117 were found to increase from 2.9 × 10−6 to 4.0 × 10−6 cm2 s−1. For BPSH 40, the diffusion coefficient dropped significantly over the same concentration range, from 7.7 × 10−6 to 2.5 × 10−6cm2 s−1. The difference in diffusion behavior is largely related to the amount of solvent sorbed by the membranes. Increasing the methanol concentration results in an increase in solvent uptake for Nafion 117, while BPSH 40 actually excludes the solvent at higher concentrations. In contrast, diffusion of methanol measured via permeability measurements (assuming a partition coefficient of 1) was lower (1.3 × 10−6 and 6.4 × 10−7 cm2 s−1 for Nafion 117 and BPSH 40 respectively) and showed no concentration dependence. The differences observed between the two techniques are related to the length scale over which diffusion is monitored and the partition coefficient, or solubility, of methanol in the membranes as a function of concentration. For the permeability measurements, this length is equal to the thickness of the membrane (178 and 132 μm for Nafion 117 and BPSH 40 respectively) whereas the NMR method observes diffusion over a length of approximately 4–8 μm. Regardless of the measurement technique, BPSH 40 is a greater barrier to methanol permeability at high methanol concentrations.  相似文献

This work deals with water-swollen hydrogel membranes for potential CO2 separation applications, with an emphasis on elucidating the role of water in the membrane for gas permeation. A series of hydrogel membranes with a wide range of water contents (0.9–10 g water/g polymer) were prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol), chitosan, carboxyl methyl cellulose, alginic acid and poly(vinylamine), and the permeation of CO2, H2, He and N2 through the membranes at different pressures (200–800 kPa) was studied. The gas permeabilities through the dry dense membranes were measured as well to evaluate the resistance of the polymer matrix in the hydrogel membranes. It was shown that the gas permeability in water-swollen membrane is lower than the gas permeability in water, and the selectivity of the water-swollen membranes to a pair of gases is close to the ratios of their permeabilities in water. The permeability of the water-swollen membranes increases with an increase in the swelling degree of the membrane, and the membrane permeability tends to level off when the water content is sufficiently high. A resistance model was proposed to describe gas permeation through the hydrogel membranes, where the immobilized water retained in the polymer matrix was considered to form transport passageways for gas permeation through the membrane. It was shown that the permeability of hydrogel membranes was primarily determined by the water content in the membrane. The model predictions were consistent with the experimental data for various hydrogel membranes with a wide range of water contents (0.4–10 g water/g polymer).  相似文献

The grafting of dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) onto styrene–butadiene–styrene triblock copolymer membrane (SBS) was induced by UV-radiation without degassing to obtain SBS-g-DMAEMA copolymer membrane. The graft copolymer membrane was characterized by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The density and the decomposition temperature of the SBS-g-DMAEMA copolymer membrane were measured. The effects of DMAEMA grafting content and operating temperature on membrane gas permeability were investigated. It was found that the density of SBS-g-DMAEMA copolymer membrane increased with increasing DMAEMA content, whereas the decomposition temperature decreased. The changes of properties of SBS-g-DMAEMA copolymer membrane reduced the gas permeability and diffusivity of oxygen and nitrogen through the membrane, but increased the gas solubility of oxygen through the membrane and the gas selectivity between oxygen and nitrogen. When the operating temperature of gas permeation was increased, the permeability, solubility and diffusivity of oxygen and nitrogen increased but the selectivity decreased.  相似文献

Polymer/liquid crystal composite membranes were cast from a 1,2-dichloroethane solution of polycarbonate (PC) and N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene-4'-n- butylaniline) (EBBA). The mixing state of the polymer/liquid crystal composite membrane was investigated on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray, density, sorption isotherm and sorption—desorption studies and also by electron microscopic observations. EBBA molecules in the composite membrane exist in an almost molecularly dispersed state up to an EBBA fraction of 30 wt%, and in the case of EBBA fractions above 30 wt% form a crystal domain as the mutual continuous phase among the network of polycarbonate fibrils. The composite membrane containing EBBA of 60 wt% can be handled as a homogeneous medium when considering gas permeation. The diffusive permeability coefficient to water reveals a distinct jump in the vicinity of the crystal—liquid crystal phase transition temperature of EBBA. The permeability coefficients, P, to hydrocarbon gases increases 100-200 times over several degrees in the phase transition temperature range. P for hydrocarbon gases decreases with increasing number of carbon atoms below the phase transition temperature, but increases with increasing number of carbon atoms above it. These results suggest that the permeation process is predominantly controlled by diffusion mechanism below the transition temperature of EBBA, while the solubility factor significantly affects gas permeation above it.  相似文献

Ethylcellulose (EC) or linear polyimide (LPI) and magnetic neodymium powder particles MQP-14-12 were used for the preparation of inorganic-organic hybrid membranes. For all the membranes, N2, O2 and air permeability were examined. Mass transport coefficients were determined using the Time Lag System based on dynamic experiments in a constant pressure system. The results showed that the membrane permeation properties were improved by the addition of magnetic neodymium particles to the polymer matrix. The magnetic ethylcellulose and polyimide membranes exhibited higher gas permeability and diffusivity, while their permeability selectivity and solubility were either unchanged or slightly increased. Polyimide mixed matrix membranes were characterised by a higher thermal and mechanical stability, larger filler loading, better magnetic properties and reasonable selectivity in the air separation.  相似文献
