We consider an elasticity problem in a domain Ω()F(), where Ω is an open bounded domain in R3, F() is a connected nonperiodic set in Ω like a net of slender bars, and is a parameter characterizing the microstructure of the domain. We consider the case of a surface distribution of the set F(), i.e., for sufficiently small , the set F() is concentrated in arbitrary small neighbourhood of a surface Γ. A large scale experiment has been carried out on an experimental facility to study the mass transfer of trichloroethylene (TCE) in a partially saturated porous medium. 5 liters of TCE have been infiltrated in the vadose zone of the site. The mass transfer of TCE from the vapor plume in the unsaturated zone towards the top of groundwater was quantified based on an analytical and a numerical approach. The mass of the pollutant measured at the exit of the model is well represented by the two mathematical approaches. It is found that the transfer of TCE towards the groundwater from the vapor plume is weak, which corresponds to 285 g of TCE, approximately 4% of the initial mass. The first bifurcation in a lid-driven cavity characterized by three-dimensional Taylor–Görtler-Like instabilities is investigated for a cubical cavity with spanwise periodic boundary conditions at Re=1000. The modes predicted by a global linear stability analysis are compared to the results of a direct numerical simulation. The amplification rate, and the shape of the three-dimensional perturbation fields from the direct numerical simulation are in very good agreement with the characteristics of the steady S1 mode from the stability analysis, showing that this mode dominates the other unstable unsteady modes. Boundary integral equations are well suitable for the analysis of seismic waves propagation in unbounded domains. Formulations in elastodynamics are well developed. In contrast, for the dynamic analysis of viscoelastic media, there are very seldom formulations by boundary integral equations. In this Note, we propose a new and simple formulation of time harmonic viscoelasticity with the Zener model, which reduces to classical elastodynamics if a compatibility condition is satisfied by boundary conditions. Intermediate variables which satisfy the classical elastodynamic equations are introduced. It makes it possible to utilize existing numerical tools of time harmonic elastodynamics. A correlation algorithm is proposed to measure full three-dimensional displacement fields in a three-dimensional domain. The chosen kinematic basis for this measurement is based on continuous finite-element shape functions. It is furthermore proposed to account for the presence of strong discontinuities, similarly to extended finite element schemes, with a suited enrichment of the kinematics with discontinuities supported by a (crack) surface. An optimization of the surface geometry is proposed based on correlation residuals. The procedure is applied to analyze one loading cycle of a fatigue-cracked nodular graphite cast iron sample by using computed tomography pictures. Subvoxel crack openings are revealed and measured. This paper is devoted to a micromechanics-based simulation of the response of concrete to hydrostatic and oedometric compressions. Concrete is described as a composite made up of a cement matrix in which rigid inclusions are embedded. The focus is put on the role of the interface between matrix and inclusion which represent the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). A plastic behavior is considered for both the matrix and the interfaces. We study experimentally the impact of a plastic bead on a rotating wall made of steel (velocity Ω; radial position x0). The results show that the restitution coefficient is directly function of the impact velocity x0Ω and is invariant by changing frame reference. The influence of the height of release of the particle on its angular velocity after impact is also studied. We observe an increase of the angular velocity with height followed by a saturation. We propose an interpretation for this evolution considering that the particle may roll without sliding during all the impact. The Continuous Thermodynamics Model (CTM) (Cotterman et al., 1985) is a suitable method to reduce computational cost of multi-component vaporization models. The droplet composition is described by a probability density function (PDF) rather than tens of components in the classical Discrete Component Model (DCM). In the first CTM method developed for this application, the PDF was assumed to be a Γ-function (Hallett, 2000), but some problems had appeared in the case of vapor condensation at the droplet surface (Harstadt et al., 2003). The method put forward in this article, the Quadrature Method of Moments (QMoM), enables one to avoid any assumption on the PDF mathematical form. Following Lage who has developed this method for phase equilibria (Lage, 2007), this article widens the scope of QMoM to the modelling of multi-component droplet vaporization. The different CTM approaches are presented in the first part and the results obtained for a vapor condensation test case are then compared and analysed to illustrate improvements made by QMoM. In this work we present an experimental apparatus devoted to the thermal characterisation of a milling tool. The experimental device used thermistors, one for each insert. Each thermistor is located at a point in the tool close to the tip of the insert. The heat flux in each insert is expressed according to the temperature at the sensor from a non-integer model. The parameters of the model are identified from transient evolutions measurements of the temperature on the sensor and on the cutting edge. The quasistatic evolution of the mechanical state of a piezoelectric body with damage is numerically studied in this paper. Both damage and piezoelectric effects are included into the model. The variational formulation leads to a coupled system composed of two linear variational equations for the displacement field and the electric potential, and a nonlinear parabolic variational equation for the damage field. The existence of a unique weak solution is stated. Then, a fully discrete scheme is introduced by using a finite element method to approximate the spatial variable and an Euler scheme to discretize the time derivatives. Error estimates are derived on the approximate solutions, from which the linear convergence of the algorithm is deduced under suitable regularity conditions. A new approach is advocated to compute at a low cpu time cost the rigid-body motions of settling solid particles when inertial effects are negligible. A discrete model of a woven fabric structure is established, whereby nodes endowed with a mass and a rotational rigidity are connected by rigid bars to form a two-dimensional truss. The set of four bars that delineate a quadrilateral area is further endowed with a torsion deformation mode. The kinematics of the truss reproduces the large rotations and displacements encountered for real tissues. The equilibrium shape of such a structure is obtained as the minimum of its total potential energy versus the whole set of kinematic translational and rotational variables, accounting for eventual kinematic constraints due to contact with a rigid surface by the Lagrange multipliers method. In this Note we present an approach to determine the local minima of a specific class of minimization problems. Attention is focused on the inextensibility condition of flexible rods expressed as a nonconvex constraint. Two algorithms are derived from a special splitting of the Lagrangian into the difference of two convex functions (DC). They are compared to the augmented Lagrangian methods used in this context. Very different materials are named ‘Glass’, with Young's modulus E and Poisson's ratio ν extending from 5 to 180 GPa and from 0.1 to 0.4, respectively, in the case of bulk inorganic glasses. Glasses have in common the lack of long range order in the atomic organization. Beside the essential role of elastic properties for materials selection in mechanical design, we show in this analysis that macroscopical elastic characteristics (E,ν) provide an interesting way to get insight into the short- and medium-range orders existing in glasses. In particular, ν, the packing density (Cg) and the glass network dimensionality appear to be strongly correlated. Networks consisting primarily of chains and layers units (chalcogenides, low Si-content silicate glasses) correspond to ν>0.25 and Cg>0.56, with maximum values observed for metallic glasses (ν0.4 and Cg>0.7). On the contrary, ν<0.25 is associated to a highly cross-linked network with a tri-dimensional organization resulting in a low packing density. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the elastic moduli brings a new light on the ‘fragility’ of glasses (as introduced by Angell) and on the level of cooperativity of atomic movements at the source of the deformation process. Data assimilation is used to couple numerical simulations and laboratory experiments of unsteady fluid flows in a stratified, rotating fluid. The experiments are performed on the large Coriolis turntable (Grenoble) and the simulations are performed with a multi-layer shallow water model. Sequential assimilation of high-resolution CIV (Correlation Image Velocimetry) measurements drives the numerical model close to the experimental flow and provides an estimation of all the flow variables at each time and each point. It is then possible (i) to analyse the flow dynamics in details, (ii) to determine the model errors starting from a realistic initial condition and (iii) to test the assimilation scheme when a reduced set of data is assimilated. Ramjets are very sensitive to instabilities and their numerical predictions can only be addressed adequately by Large Eddy Simulation (LES). With this technique, solvers can be implicit or explicit and handle structured, unstructured or hybrid meshes, etc. Turbulence and combustion models are other sources of differences. The impact of these options is here investigated for the ONERA ramjet burner. To do so, two LES codes developed by ONERA and CERFACS compute one stable operating condition. Preliminary LES results of the two codes underline the overall robustness of LES. Mean flow features at the various critical sections are reasonably well predicted by both codes. Disagreement mainly appear in the chamber where combustion positions differ pointing to the importance of the combustion and subgrid mixing models. The two LES produce different energy containing motions. With CEDRE, a low frequency dominates while AVBP produces different ranges of low frequencies that can be linked with acoustic modes of the configuration. To cite this article: A. Roux et al., C. R.
