The use of epidote in fission track dating was abandoned since the beginning of the 1980s due to difficulties like absence of a standard etching procedure, obtainment of different closure temperatures and the percentage of the datable samples. The results become much more reproducible when restricting fission track analysis to a peculiar kind of track. We are also studying confined track length, what makes possible to obtain information about fossil track annealing. Fission tracks in epidote were successfully etched with 48% HF at for 12.5 min. Dating samples by the external detector method was not possible due to problems in measuring the efficiency factor held between the number of fossil fission tracks and tracks induced in mica. Dating a sample from Brejuí, RN, Brazil with the population method gave a corrected age of , in agreement with published U/Th–Pb ages. From the fact that the fossil track length histogram was bimodal, we were able to infer that this sample registered a thermal episode during its history.

These preliminary results indicate that epidote deserves further studies to establish whether it can be employed as a thermochronological tool.  相似文献

The break-up of Western Gondwana Supercontinent was responsible in NW Namibia for significant tectono-thermal events at Early Cretaceous. In the Kaoko Belt and Walvis Basin, several evidences of this plate readjustment are registered: Etendeka Province, Great Escarpment Mountains, Precambrian structure reactivations, unconformities of surfaces in both continental area and margin basins. Apatite fission track thermochronology applied to the Kaoko basement rocks provides evidence of long-lived cooling history since the Early Cretaceous. The thermal modelings indicate accelerated uplift and/or upwarping of the local crust at followed by a gradual and continuous cooling history.  相似文献

Fission track dating has greatly expanded its usefulness to geology over the last 40 years. It is central to thermochronology—the use of shortened fission tracks to decipher the thermal history, movement, and provenance of rocks. When combined with other indicators, such as zircon color and (U–Th)/He, a range of temperatures from C to C can be studied. Combining fission track analysis with cosmogenic nuclide decay rates, one can study landscape development and denudation of passive margins. Technological applications have expanded from biological filters, radon mapping, and dosimetry to the use of ion track microtechnology in microlithography, micromachining by ion track etching, microscopic field emission tips, magnetic nanowires as magnetoresistive sensors, microfluidic devices, physiology of ion channels in single cells, and so on. In nuclear and particle physics, relatively insensitive glass detectors have been almost single-handedly responsible for our knowledge of cluster radioactivity, and plastic track detectors together with automated measuring systems have been used at the Bevalac, Brookhaven, CERN, and GSI, mainly to study fragmentation of high-energy heavy nuclei. Almost everything we know about the ultraheavy cosmic rays has been learned using Lexan on the Long Duration Exposure Facility and BP-1 phosphate glass on the Mir Station. New topics include development of calorimetric aerogels capable of measuring kinetic energies of hypervelocity interstellar and interplanetary dust grains in space and research on identification of strains of Bacillus spores by measurements of their size and swelling rates when humidified.  相似文献

Formation of heavy fragments in the fission mass region in the interaction of 26.5 GeV with U, Bi, Au and Ag is studied using a sandwich configuration of the Makrofol polycarbonate track detector. Events in which at least one heavy fragment in the fission mass region is detected are analyzed. Fragments produced in these events are identified and an event-by-event model-free analysis is performed in order to separate different production mechanisms. We have identified the events produced in fission, deep spallation and fragmentation processes. The cross sections and experimental features are determined for these reaction mechanisms, and their variations as a function of the target mass have been investigated. The results show that in the interactions of with U the dominant process is fission, while in the interactions of with lighter target nuclei the dominant processes are deep spallation and fragmentation.  相似文献

Measurement of the correct neutron fluence in various energy intervals in and around the neutron sources is important for the purpose of personnel and environmental neutron dosimetry. In the present paper we present a method for the measurement of neutron fluence using a CR-39 plastic track detector. The samples exposed to fission neutrons from a reactor with 1012 fluence and to fast neutrons from a 241Am–Be source with a fluence of were etched for 14 time intervals starting from 10 to 570 min in 6 N NaOH at . The etched samples were exposed to the monochromatic light signal from an iodine–tungsten lamp and the transmittance was measured after each etching time interval using a UV Spectrophotometer. An exponential decay of the transmittance has been observed with increasing etching time. The behaviour of the fission neutrons having four different values of fluence has been observed to be distinctly different from that of the fast neutrons. It has also been observed that there is a linear relationship between the transmittance decay constant and fission neutron fluence.  相似文献

The results of the Marjalahti pallasite fission-track age determination are presented. Thorough examination of fossil tracks in the phosphate (whitlockite) crystals coupled with U-content determination in whitlockites can make it possible to estimate the contributions of all possible track sources to the total track density and to calculate a model fission-track age.

It is found that whitlockite crystals of the Marjalahti pallasite contain fossil tracks due to galactic cosmic rays (VH, VVH nuclei); fission of U and Th induced by cosmic rays; spontaneous fission of 238U; and spontaneous fission of extinct, short-lived 244Pu present in significant quantities in the early solar system.

A great track density attributed to the extinct 244Pu testifies to the high fission-track age. The model fission-track ages of (4.31±0.02)×109 yr for the Marjalahti pallasite are calculated. Petrographic studies allow us to interpret the fission-track age as the time of the last shock/thermal event in the cosmic history of the pallasite.  相似文献

An apatite fission track study of crystalline rocks underlying sedimentary basins in northeastern Brazil indicate that crustal blocks that occur on opposite sides of a geological fault experienced different thermal histories. Samples collected on the West block yielded corrected fission-track ages from 140 to 375 Ma, whereas samples collected on the East block yielded ages between 90 and 125 Ma. The thermal models suggest that each block experienced two cooling events separated by a heating event at different times. We concluded that the West block moved downward relative to the East block ca. 140 Ma ago, when sediments eroded from the East side were deposited on the West side. This process represents the early stage of sedimentary basin formation and the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean in the region. Downward and upward movements related to heating and cooling events of these crustal blocks at different periods until recent times are proposed.  相似文献

The fission-track method (FTM) in apatite was applied to 45 samples collected in the Serra da Mantiqueira (Mantiqueira mountain range), the Serra do Mar (Mar mountain range), regions next to these mountain ranges and the coastal region between Ubatuba and Santos in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, to study the thermochronology of the South American Platform in southeast Brazil and its influence on Santos and Campos basins. The data presented in this work complement the previously presented data on the same region (Tello Saenz et al., 2003. J. S. Am. Earth Sci. 15, 765–774) with 31 new samples analyzed. The weighted mean of the corrected ages from high Mantiqueira (around 1000 m), , coincides with the South Atlantic opening. The fact that its thermal history starts at a relatively low temperature suggests that the age of would be the formation age of Serra da Mantiqueira due to a rapid pulse, in which tracks had no time to be retained at the closure temperature, that is . The Serra do Mar presents a more complicated thermal history, with several reactivations indicated by the changes in the slope of its cooling curve. The thermal histories obtained in the regions next to these mountain ranges are compatible with the results mentioned above. The Santos Basin has unconformities that agree with changes in the slope thermal histories of the studied region.  相似文献

Statistical model calculations of prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) from 235U(n,F) reaction were performed for incident neutron energies up to En20 MeV. Exclusive spectra of the pre-fission (pre-saddle) (n,xnf) reaction neutrons, were calculated with Hauser–Feshbach statistical model, fission and (n,xn) reaction cross section data being described consistently. Spectra of neutrons, evaporated from the fission fragments, were approximated as a sum of two Watt distributions. The reduced neutron velocity in the center-of-mass system due to the neutron emission during fragment acceleration was assumed. PFNS component due to pre-saddle neutrons is evidenced in the shape of the measured PFNS data. We show it to be strongly correlated with the emissive fission contributions to the observed fission cross sections.  相似文献

For the purpose, a new set—the programmable all-automatic spark counter AIST-4—has been developed and manufactured. Compared to our previous automated spark counter ISTRA, which was operated by the integrated fixed program, the new set is operated completely by a personal computer. The mechanism for pressing and pulling the aluminized foil is put into action by a step motor operated by a microcontroller. The step motor turns an axle. The axle has two eccentrics. One of them moves a pressing plate up and down. The second eccentric moves the aluminized foil by steps of after the end of each pulse counting. One turnover of the axle corresponds to one pulse count cycle. The step motor, the high-voltage block and the pulse count block are operated by the microcontroller PIC 16C84 (Microstar). The set can be operated either manually by keys on the front panel or by a PC using dialogue windows for radon or neutron measurements (for counting of alpha or fission fragment tracks). A number of algorithms are developed: the general procedures, the automatic stopping of the pulse counting, the calibration curve, determination of the count characteristics and elimination of the short circuit in a track.  相似文献

The Precambrian crystalline basement of southeast Brazil is affected by many Phanerozoic reactivations of shear zones that developed during the end of the Neoproterozoic in the Brasiliano orogeny. These reactivations with specific tectonic events, a multidisciplinary study was done, involving geology, paleostress, and structural analysis of faults, associated with apatite fission track methods along the northeastern border of the Parana basin in southeast Brazil.The results show that the study area consists of three main tectonic domains, which record different episodes of uplift and reactivation of faults. These faults were brittle in character and resulted in multiple generations of fault products as pseudotachylytes and ultracataclasites, foliated cataclasites and fault gouges.Based on geological evidence and fission track data, an uplift of basement rocks and related tectonic subsidence with consequent deposition in the Parana basin were modeled.The reactivations of the basement record successive uplift events during the Phanerozoic dated via corrected fission track ages, at (Ordovician); (Triassic); (Jurassic), (Early Cretaceous); (Late Cretaceous) and (Late Cretaceous). These results indicate differential uplift of tectonic domains of basement units, probably related to Parana basin subsidence. Six major sedimentary units (supersequences) that have been deposited with their bounding unconformities, seem to have a close relationship with the orogenic events during the evolution of southwestern Gondwana.  相似文献

The fragmentation of Pb ions at 158 A GeV energy produced in the interaction with Pb target has been studied using a CR-39 track detector. A stack comprising of 64 detectors was prepared such that a target of 1 cm thickness was sandwiched between the sheets of CR-39. The purpose of this exposure geometry was to calibrate CR-39 with respect to relativistic heavy ions as well as to study the fragmentation of Pb ions at 158 A GeV energy. The exposure was carried out at the SPS beam facility of CERN at normal incidence with a fluence of . Two detectors from the exposed stack have been selected for this study: one before and the other after the target material. After etching, the detectors were scanned using an optical microscope and the etched track lengths and the diameters of the track openings were measured manually. Considering that the lengths of tracks provide the best charge resolution for Z>65, we have measured track lengths for a sufficiently large number of fragments to identify individual charge states for 65<Z<83. The total charge-changing cross section has also been determined.  相似文献

The role of oxygen for stabilising radicals to form permanent damages in irradiated samples which are basically important for the etching process of track detectors has been studied. Samples of CR-39 were irradiated with 4 MeV -particles with a fluence of 30 000 particles per cm2. The irradiations were performed in three different regimes:
• variation of out-gassing time in vacuum before irradiation;

• no out-gassing time but varied post-irradiation storage times in vacuum;

• variation of both storage times in vacuum before and after irradiation.

Generally, the absence of dissolved oxygen in the irradiated sample results in a decreased detection sensitivity in comparison with the detection properties and track parameters of samples irradiated in air. To determine the sensitivity the depth dependence of the track etch rate vT(x) along the particle trajectory has been measured. From the observation of the dependence of the decreasing sensitivity on the post-irradiation storage time in vacuum, a lifetime of free radicals of 30 min could be derived. The amount of permanent damages responsible for the etching mechanism is related to the concentration profile of back-diffused oxygen and the REL-dependent radical concentration. This confirms previous results that the detection sensitivity is not a simple function of REL but depends on both REL and x the stronger the deeper within the irradiated sample.  相似文献

The current–voltage (IV) characteristics of Au/polyaniline(PANI)/p-Si/Al structures were determined at various temperatures in the range of 90–300 K. The evaluation of the experimental IV data reveals a decrease of the zero-bias barrier height (BH) and an increase of the ideality factor (n) with decreasing temperature. It was shown that the occurrence of a Gaussian distribution of then BHs is responsible for the decrease of the apparent BH, increase of the ideality factor n due to barrier height imhomogeneities that prevail at the interface. A Φb0 versus 1/T plot has been drawn for evidence of the Gaussian distribution of the barrier height, and and σ0 = 0.0943 V for the mean barrier height and zero-bias standard deviation, respectively, have been obtained from this plot. Thus, a modified versus 1/T plot gives and A* as 0.885 eV and A* = 55.80 A/K2 cm2, respectively. Hence, it can be concluded that Au/PANI/p-Si/Al structure has a good rectifying contact and the temperature dependence of IV characteristics of the rectifying contact on p-Si successfully have been explained on the basis of TE mechanism with Gaussian distribution of the barrier heights.  相似文献

The behaviour of ubiquitous radon (), thoron () and their progeny in the indoor atmosphere generally reflect a complex interplay between a number of processes, the most important of which are radioactive -decay, ventilation, attachment to aerosols and deposition on the surfaces. The present work involved a long-term (1997–2000) passive monitoring of and in the indoor environment of the North-Eastern region of India. This region being a zone of high seismicity, the indoor radon and thoron measurement of the region will provide a better insight and a valuable database for any study related to radon and thoron anomalies.  相似文献

The present study intends to interpret some of the characteristic features of the light scattered by cometary dust, such as phase angle and wavelength dependence of its polarization, through simulations using Ballistic Cluster-Cluster Aggregation (BCCA) or Ballistic Particle-Cluster Aggregation (BPCA) aggregates of up to 128 sub-micron sized grains (spherical and spheroidal with a possible size distribution) of various composition (silicates, organics, silicates core with organics mantle). The dependence of the linear polarization with the size parameter is shown to depend highly on the size and composition of the constitutive grains. Internal interactions induced by shape or orientation averaging of the grains may lessen this dependence, leading to results comparable to those observed on cometary dust for fluffy aggregates of grains with a size parameter in the 1.3–1.8 range. A size distribution of realistically shaped particles (aggregates of spheroids and larger spheroids) following a power law size distribution with a power index of -3, the smallest grains radius by 0.03– and the largest spheroids effective radius by , gives a very good fit to the Hale-Bopp observed phase curves. The best silicates–organics ratio ranges from about 50–75% organics and 25–50% silicates in volume considering the eventual presence of core-mantle grains.  相似文献

Magnetic interactions in hexaferrite samples of Ba1-xLax+δFe12-xCoxO19 composition were studied. The precursor powders—barium carbonate (BaCO3), lanthanum oxide (La2O3), hematite (Fe2O3) and cobalt acetate—were milled for 100 h in air atmosphere and heat-treated for 1 h at . The structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction. The FORC distributions show a single peak at high switching fields, indicating that the substituted systems are formed by weakly interacting particles. The perovskite compounds of have been studied by means of NMR spectroscopy in powder samples prepared by the solid state reaction and sol–gel methods. The NMR signals were observed in the frequency range 250–650 MHz at 4.2 K in zero external magnetic field. A relatively narrow spectral line assigned to 55Mn in Mn4+ is situated around 270–320 MHz in all spectra. Additional spectral lines are observed at higher frequencies. Line intensities and forms are dependent on the cobalt concentration and preparation techniques.  相似文献
