The effects of surface dimensions and topology on the adsorption of water on a graphite surface at 298 K were investigated using the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation. Regarding the surface topology, we specifically considered the functional group and its position on the surface. The hydroxyl group (OH) is used as a model for the functional group. For describing the interaction of water, we used the potential model proposed by Muller et al., and the simulated isotherms of water in slit pores are found to depend on the position and concentration of the functional group. The onset of adsorption shifts to lower pressure when the concentration of functional group increases or when the functional group is positioned at the center of the graphene surface. The configuration of a group of functional groups also affects the adsorption isotherm. In all cases investigated, we have found that the hysteresis loop always exists, and the loop size depends on the concentration of the functional group and its position. Finally, we tested the molecular model of water adsorption on a functional graphite pore against the experimental data of a commercial activated carbon. The agreement is found to be satisfactory when the model porous solid is composed of pores having width in the range between 10 and 20 A and functional groups positioned at the center of the graphitic wall.  相似文献

A procedure is described for determining the structure of a small molecule from a single NMR experiment. Several standard NMR sequences are combined so that the essential structural information is obtained in just one pass. Two-dimensional (13)C-(13)C correlations ("INADEQUATE"), single- and multiple-bond (13)C-(1)H correlations, and the conventional (13)C spectrum are recorded in parallel, making use of separate receiver channels for acquisition of (13)C and (1)H signals. The natural-abundance (13)C-(13)C correlation measurements employ a high-sensitivity cryogenically cooled probe, optimized for (13)C detection. An extension of this "all-in-one" sequence with three parallel receivers permits the corresponding natural-abundance (15)N spectra to be included.  相似文献

By attaching one end of a single lambda-DNA molecule to a microscope coverslip and the other end to a polystyrene microsphere trapped by an optical tweezers, we can study the entropic elasticity of the lambda-DNA by measuring force versus extension as we stretch the molecule. This powerful method permits single molecule studies. We are particularly interested in the effects of the photosensitive drug psoralen on the elasticity of the DNA molecule. We have illuminated the sample with different light sources, studying how the different wavelengths affect the psoralen-DNA linkage. To do this, we measure the persistence length of individual DNA-psoralen complexes.  相似文献

A simple method for the direct determination of the air-loop volume in a RAD7 system as well as the radon partition coefficient was developed allowing for an accurate measurement of the radon activity in any type of water. The air-loop volume may be measured directly using an external radon source and an empty bottle with a precisely measured volume. The partition coefficient and activity of radon in the water sample may then be determined via the RAD7 using the determined air-loop volume. Activity ratios instead of absolute activities were used to measure the air-loop volume and the radon partition coefficient. In order to verify this approach, we measured the radon partition coefficient in deionized water in the temperature range of 10–30 °C and compared the values to those calculated from the well-known Weigel equation. The results were within 5 % variance throughout the temperature range. We also applied the approach for measurement of the radon partition coefficient in synthetic saline water (0–75 ppt salinity) as well as tap water. The radon activity of the tap water sample was determined by this method as well as the standard RAD-H2O and BigBottle RAD-H2O. The results have shown good agreement between this method and the standard methods.  相似文献

The importance of intraparticle convection during and after the pressurization step of a pressure swing adsorption process is assessed by considering a single, cylindrical, closed-end pore with adsorptive walls exposed to a binary mixture of an adsorbable component and an inert gas. Gas-phase mass transfer is comprised of pore diffusion and convection, and surface diffusion occurs in the adsorbed phase. Concentration, velocity, and flux profiles are obtained inside the pore both during and after pressurization. Solutions are obtained analytically for the limiting cases of no adsorption, no diffusion, and no inert gas. Complete solutions of the material balance equations are obtained by orthogonal collocation. The pressurization rate, the adsorptive capacity of the pore wall, and the gas-phase mole fraction are varied over a wide range to study the relative importance of convection and diffusion under different conditions. Results show that convection makes a large contribution to transport in the pore except when the adsorbable component has a small mole fraction.  相似文献

We introduce an improved on-site rapid analysis system for measuring 224Ra in natural waters. Radium isotopes are pre-concentrated on “Mn-fibers” before measurement of 220Rn. A Nafion drying system is used to lower the humidity in the detectors while maintaining a relatively constant moisture level in the Mn fiber in order to maintain a high and reproducible radon emanation. River water samples measured by this method agreed well with an analysis via RaDeCC, a very sensitive technique for measuring 224Ra. This method is recommended for fieldwork in remote areas when electricity and helium gas, required by traditional techniques, are not available.  相似文献

A six month survey of radon, radon progeny and condensation nuclei (CN) has been conducted in an Australian tourist cave. The measurements have been made continuously at two sites within the cave: one a small chamber with a high air exchange rate close to one entrance and connected to several other entrances by complex passages; the other a large chamber with a low air exchange rate 1 km from the nearest entrance. The measurements form a basis for evaluation of the accuracy with which dose due to radon can be determined for different monitoring strategies. It is shown that the estimate of dose based on the measurement of radon concentration and recommendations in ICPR-65, is low by a factor of 1.3 at the well ventilated site and 1.5 at the site with a low air exchange rate and low CN. At each site the weekly average equilibrium factor and unattached fraction were steady, leading to the possibility of establishing a cave system average of these factors. However, given the technical diffuculties involved, it may not be practicable to make enough unattached fraction measurements to fully represent the cave system. Therefore it may be necessary to use a conservative approach to the dosimetry and add 50% to values determined by the ICRP-65 conversion convention.  相似文献

The automated single cell electrophoresis microscope Parmoquant has been used for the discrimination of lymphocytes and the study of the interaction of substances with cells and synthetic particles. Electrophoretic histograms allowed the determination of changes in the proportion of lymphocyte populations after kidney transplantation, during dialysis treatment, open heart surgery and during pregnancy. Discrimination of leukemic cells on the basis of electrophoresis was used as an additional parameter in diagnosis. In a mouse tumor model, histogram determination enabled the in vivo effect of the tumor necrosis factor on immune cells to be evaluated. Cell electrophoresis was shown to be suitable to detect the influence of antibodies, lectins and bacteria on the cell surface. Protein adsorption was studied on synthetic particles using cell electrophoresis. This method was applied to investigate the phenomena of blood interaction with biomaterials used in artificial organs and to determine differences in the protein composition of serum or other body fluids connected with diseases.  相似文献

The calibration factor of 0.029 ± 0.0002 track cm?2 per Bq d m?3 for radon concentration measurements was determined using CR-39 and RAD7 detectors. The 222Rn concentration varied from 2,225 to 9,950 and 12 to 1,002 Bq m?3 in soil and water, respectively. The highest radon exhalation and gamma dose rates were found in Acid and undifferentiated granitic rocks and Miscellaneous soils.  相似文献

The 3D structure of three individual aggregates composed of 165 nm polystyrene primary particles is revealed nondestructively by hard X-ray phase-contrast synchrotron nanotomography. Three-dimensional image analysis allows us for the first time to obtain the complex inner porosity of the entire aggregate. It is demonstrated that despite their rather compact structure, characterized by a fractal dimension equal to 2.7, the produced aggregates are still porous, with porosity increasing with its size. Generated pores have diameters from 100 nm to 3 μm and are almost completely interconnected.  相似文献

A new model based on electric circuit theory has been introduced for modeling the radon exhalation from water to air in a sample bottle. Comparing the differential equations for radon exhalation from water to air and a hybrid electrical circuit shown that the volume of water or air, radon concentration, radon flux and solubility coefficient (dependent on temperature of water) are equivalent with capacitance, voltage across of capacitor, current and voltage gain, respectively. Then by using a hybrid electrical model total radon transfer velocity from water to air and time variation of water radon concentration in our experimental setup has been obtained. Also the variations of air radon concentration with temperature, volume of water and volume of air is obtained. The results show a good agreement with those in literatures.  相似文献

Small-molecule kinase inhibitors are predominantly discovered in pure protein assays. We have discovered an inhibitor of Rho-kinase (ROCK) through an image-based, high-throughput screen of cell monolayer wound healing. Using automated microscopy, we screened a library of approximately 16,000 compounds finding many that affected cell migration or cell morphology as well as compounds that blocked mitotic progression. We tested approximately 200 compounds in a series of subassays and chose one, 3-(4-pyridyl)indole (Rockout), for more detailed characterization. Rockout inhibits blebbing and causes dissolution of actin stress fibers, phenocopying Rho-kinase inhibitors. Testing Rho-kinase activity in vitro, Rockout inhibits with an IC50 of 25 microM ( approximately 5-fold less potent than Y-27632) but has a similar specificity profile. We also profile the wound healing assay with a library of compounds with known bioactivities, revealing multiple pathways involved in the biology.  相似文献

Measurement of soil-gas radon (Rn) concentration is an important parameter in estimating soil Rn potential for a building site. Typically, field methods for grab samples (as contrasted with continuous flow systems) using a protable alpha-scintillometer only considered222Rn (T 1/2= 3.8 d) and ignored220Rn (T 1/2=55 s). Now the calculation permits the determination of the concentrations of both isotopes with a single series of readings. A sample is collected and within 1 minute is introduced into the counting system. A series of 1 minute counts begins immediately and continues for 10 minutes. If high220Rn concentrations are present, there will be a rapid decay followed by a steady ingrowth of222Rn progeny. If very little220Rn is present, the ingrowth will be seen immediately. In either case, a non-linear least square fitting program from Statgraphics is used to obtain both concentrations at time zero. When inexact timings ranging from 1 to 30 seconds were imposed on the measured data, the method proved to be very robust; the biases did not exceed 15 percent.  相似文献

A modified head-space analysis technique, coupling thermal extraction with subsequent adsorption of organics on a poly (para 2,6-diphenyl phenylene) oxide adsorbent (Tenax-GC), has been found to be an efficacious tool when combined with gas chromatography for the study and monitoring of low molecular weight organics present in drinking water supplies (1-4). This procedure has allowed for the analysis of volatile organics in the low parts-per-billion range from 1 liter or less of tap water. Because thermal extraction requires smaller sample sizes than required in carbon-chloroform extraction methods and liquid/liquid extractions, the EPA has recently adopted this type of methodology (5,6). Passage of the Safe Water Drinking Act in December of 1974 has mandated that each state assumes the primary responsibility for carrying out the purposes of the legislation (7). Because the Act says that any supplier of water serving 25 individuals or more must comply with these regulations, large-scale monitoring programs will have to be undertaken. It was thus our desire to try to simplify the sample collection and data acquistion and reduction processes as much as possible, in the effort to make the procedure more adaptable for incorporation into routine monitoring programs. Also, automation reduces the experience and number of personnel required to perform the analyses. In addition to analysis of drinking water samples, the automated procedure described hereinafter can also be applied to monitoring industrial plant effluents, waste water treatment processes, and general quality control monitoring of low molecular weight organic compounds.  相似文献

Polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes for kidney dialysis application were prepared by the dry-jet wet-spinning method. A dual-coagulation bath technology was first time employed for fabricating the kidney dialysis membranes with a tight inner skin and loose outer supporting layer structure. A weak coagulant isopropanol (IPA) was served as the first external coagulation bath, while water as the second bath. Experiments demonstrate their advantages of better controlling both inner and outer skin morphology. The as-spun fibers have a higher mean effective pore size (μp), pure water permeation flux (PWP) and molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) with an increase in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) percentage in bore fluid (i.e., internal coagulant). After being treated in 8000 ppm NaOCl solution for 1 day, fibers show larger pore sizes and porosity in both inner and outer surfaces, and thinner inner and outer layers than their as-spun counterparts. Among them, the bleached fibers spun with 50 wt.% NMP in bore fluid have the MWCO (43 kDa) and PWP (40 × 10−5 L m−2 Pa−1 h−1) suitable for kidney dialysis application. Based on SEM observations and solute rejection performance, the further heat treated fibers in an aqueous solution is found to be an effective way to fine tune membranes morphology and MWCO for kidney dialysis application. The solute rejection performance data of the hollow fiber membranes spun with 55 wt.% NMP in bore fluid after heat treated at 90 °C in water for 2 h were found to be very appropriate for the kidney dialysis application.  相似文献
