This paper presents a simple and practical scheme for capturing moving interfaces or free boundaries in multi‐fluid simulations. The scheme, which is called THINC (tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing), makes use of the hyperbolic tangent function to compute the numerical flux for the fluid fraction function, and gives a conservative, oscillation‐less and smearing‐less solution to the fluid fraction function even for the extremely distorted interfaces of arbitrary complexity. The numerical results from the THINC scheme possess adequate quality for practical applications, which make the extra geometric reconstruction, such as those in most of the volume of fluid (VOF) methods unnecessary. Thus the scheme is quite simple. The numerical tests show that the THINC scheme has competitive accuracy compared to most exiting methods. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An easy‐to‐use front capturing method is devised by directly solving the transport equation for a volume of fluid (VOF) function. The key to this method is a semi‐Lagrangian conservative scheme, namely CIP_CSL3, recently proposed by the author. In the CIP_CSL3 scheme, the first‐order derivative of the interpolation polynomial at each cell centre is used to control the shape of the reconstructed profile. We show in the present paper that the first‐order derivative, which plays a crucial role in reconstructing the interpolation profile, can also be used to eliminate numerical diffusion. The resulting algorithm can be directly used to compute the VOF‐like function and retain the compact thickness of the moving interface in multi‐fluid simulations. No surface reconstruction based on the value of VOF function is required in the method, which makes it quite economical and easy to use. The presented method has been tested with various interfacial flows including pure rotation, vortex shearing, multi‐vortex deformation and the moving boundaries in real fluid as well. The method gives promising results to all computed problems. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present a practical numerical framework for incompressible interfacial multiphase flows on unstructured grids with arbitrary and hybrid elements. The numerical framework is constructed by combining VPM (volume-average/point-value multi-moment) and UMTHINC (unstructured multi-dimensional tangent of hyperbola interface capturing) schemes. To facilitate accurate and reliable simulations for interfacial multiphase flows on arbitrary and hybrid unstructured grids, we have made the following major new efforts in this work. (1) UMTHINC scheme on prismatic and pyramidal elements to facilitate computations on hybrid arbitrary unstructured grids; (2) Consistent numerical formulation for mass and momentum transports to simulate multiphase flows of large density ratio; (3) Combined FVM-FEM for accurate solution to diffusion equation; (4) Pressure-projection formulation in consistent with the balanced-force model. Integrating all these numerical techniques effectively enhances the accuracy and robustness in interface capturing and numerical solution of multiphase fluid dynamics, which results in a numerical framework of great significance for practical applications. Numerical verifications have been carried out through benchmark tests ranging from surface tension dominant flows of small scale to large scale flows with violently-changing interfaces. Numerical results demonstrate that the present framework is robust with adequate accuracy for simulating multiphase flows in complex geometries.  相似文献

This paper compares the numerical performance of the moment‐of‐fluid (MOF) interface reconstruction technique with Youngs, LVIRA, power diagram (PD), and Swartz interface reconstruction techniques in the context of a volume‐of‐fluid (VOF) based finite element projection method for the numerical simulation of variable‐density incompressible viscous flows. In pure advection tests with multiple materials MOF shows dramatic improvements in accuracy compared with the other methods. In incompressible flows where density differences determine the flow evolution, all the methods perform similarly for two material flows on structured grids. On unstructured grids, the second‐order MOF, LVIRA, and Swartz methods perform similarly and show improvement over the first‐order Youngs' and PD methods. For flow simulations with more than two materials, MOF shows increased accuracy in interface positions on coarse meshes. In most cases, the convergence and accuracy of the computed flow solution was not strongly affected by interface reconstruction method. Published in 2009 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A family of flux‐continuous, locally conservative, control‐volume‐distributed multi‐point flux approximation (CVD‐MPFA) schemes has been developed for solving the general geometry‐permeability tensor pressure equation on structured and unstructured grids. These schemes are applicable to the full‐tensor pressure equation with generally discontinuous coefficients and remove the O(1) errors introduced by standard reservoir simulation schemes when applied to full‐tensor flow approximation. The family of flux‐continuous schemes is characterized by a quadrature parameterization. Improved numerical convergence for the family of CVD‐MPFA schemes using the quadrature parameterization has been observed for structured and unstructured grids in two dimensions. The CVD‐MPFA family cell‐vertex formulation is extended to classical general element types in 3‐D including prisms, pyramids, hexahedra and tetrahedra. A numerical convergence study of the CVD‐MPFA schemes on general unstructured grids comprising of triangular elements in 2‐D and prismatic, pyramidal, hexahedral and tetrahedral shape elements in 3‐D is presented. The paper presents an efficient finite volume method for unstructured grids with rotating sliding parts composed of arbitrary polyhedral elements for both single‐ and two‐phase flows. Mathematical model used in computations is based on the ensemble averaged conservation equations. These equations are solved for each phase and in case of single‐phase flow reduce to the transient Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (TRANS) equations. Transient flow induced by rotating impellers is thus resolved in time. The use of unstructured grids allows an easy and flexible meshing for the entire flow domain. Polyhedral cell volumes are created on the arbitrary mesh interface placed between rotating and static parts. Cells within the rotating parts move each time step and the new faces are created on the arbitrary interfaces only, while the rest of the domain remain ‘topologically’ unchanged. Implicit discretization scheme allows a wide range of time‐step sizes, which further reduce the computational effort. Special attention is given to the interpolation practices used for the reconstruction of the face quantities. Mass fluxes are recalculated at the beginning of each time step by using an interpolation scheme, which enhances the coupling between the pressure and velocity fields. The model has been implemented into the commercially available CFD code AVL SWIFT (AVL AST, SWIFT Manual 3.1, AVL List GmbH, Graz, Austria, 2002). Single‐phase flow in a mixing vessel stirred by a six‐bladed Rushton‐type turbine and two‐phase flow in aerated stirred vessel with the four‐blade Rushton impeller are simulated. The results are compared with the available experimental data, and good agreement is observed. The proposed algorithm is proved to be both stable and accurate for single‐phase as well as for the two‐phase flows calculations. Copyright 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An innovative Flexible Coupled Level Set (LS) and Volume of Fluid (VOF) algorithm (flexCLV) to simulate two-phase flows at the microscale on unstructured and non-uniform meshes is proposed. The method combines the advantages of the VOF method in terms of mass conservation and the LS method in terms of accuracy of the surface tension implementation and can handle both 2D and 3D domains discretized by either structured hexaedra or unstructured tetrahedral grids with high aspect ratio elements, thus guaranteeing flexibility and robustness. The method is implemented within the VOF-based OpenFOAM’s solver interFoam, which is retained as the base algorithm for the interface advection, while the surface tension force is calculated by using the level set function reconstructed from the VOF’s fraction. The method is first validated in static flow conditions by simulating a circular bubble at equilibrium and then in dynamic flow conditions by studying a freely bubble rising in both 2D and 3D domains discretized by both structured and unstructured meshes. The proposed flexCLV algorithm is then used to simulate the dynamics of confined bubbles in circular microchannels in the low capillary number regime. 2D and 3D mesh grids with high aspect ratio elements are utilized to discretized the liquid film at the tube’s walls. The numerical results are compared with the available literature and simulations performed with the original interFoam solver in terms of bubble shape and velocity, thickness of the liquid film and amplitude of the bubble tail oscillations. Results compare very well with the experimental measurements and demonstrate the superior accuracy of the coupled flexCLV method with respect to the original VOF method when surface tension and accurate interface representation play a fundamental role. Importantly, the present study also provides a precious insight on the time-dependent patterns appearing on the bubble surface in the visco-inertial regime, which could be here investigated in detail.

A nested multi‐grid solution algorithm has been developed for an adaptive Cartesian/Quad grid viscous flow solver. Body‐fitted adaptive Quad (quadrilateral) grids are generated around solid bodies through ‘surface extrusion’. The Quad grids are then overlapped with an adaptive Cartesian grid. Quadtree data structures are employed to record both the Quad and Cartesian grids. The Cartesian grid is generated through recursive sub‐division of a single root, whereas the Quad grids start from multiple roots—a forest of Quadtrees, representing the coarsest possible Quad grids. Cell‐cutting is performed at the Cartesian/Quad grid interface to merge the Cartesian and Quad grids into a single unstructured grid with arbitrary cell topologies (i.e., arbitrary polygons). Because of the hierarchical nature of the data structure, many levels of coarse grids have already been built in. The coarsening of the unstructured grid is based on the Quadtree data structure through reverse tree traversal. Issues arising from grid coarsening are discussed and solutions are developed. The flow solver is based on a cell‐centered finite volume discretization, Roe's flux splitting, a least‐squares linear reconstruction, and a differentiable limiter developed by Venkatakrishnan in a modified form. A local time stepping scheme is used to handle very small cut cells produced in cell‐cutting. Several cycling strategies, such as the saw‐tooth, W‐ and V‐cycles, have been studies. The V‐cycle has been found to be the most efficient. In general, the multi‐grid solution algorithm has been shown to greatly speed up convergence to steady state—by one to two orders. In this paper, a moving mesh BGK scheme (MMBGK) for multi‐material flow computations is proposed. The basic idea of constructing the MMBGK is to couple the Lagrangian method, which tracks material interfaces and keeps the interfaces sharp, with a remapping‐free ALE‐type kinetic method within each single material region, where the kinetic method is based on the BGK (Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook) model. Within each single material region, a numerical flux formulation is developed on moving meshes from motion of microscope particles, and the mesh velocity is determined by requiring both mesh adaptation for accuracy and robustness, such that the grids are moving towards to the regions with high flow gradients in a way of diffusive mechanism (velocity) to adjust the distances between neighboring cells, thus increasing the numerical accuracy. To keep the sharpness of material interfaces, the Lagrangian velocity and flux are constructed at the interfaces only. Consequently, a BGK‐scheme‐based ALE‐type method (i.e., the MMBGK scheme) for multi‐material flows is constructed. Numerical examples in one and two dimensions are presented to illustrate the accuracy and robustness of the MMBGK scheme. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two‐layer incompressible flows are analysed using the ghost fluid method on unstructured grids. Discontinuities in dynamic pressure along interfaces are captured in one cell without oscillations. Because of data reconstructions based on gradients, the ghost fluid method can be adopted without additional storages for the ghost nodes at the expense of modification in gradient calculations due to the discontinuity. The code is validated through comparisons with experimental and other numerical results. Good agreements are achieved for internal waves generated by a body moving at transcritical speeds including a case where upstream solitary internal waves propagate. The developed code is applied to analyse internal waves generated by a NACA0012 section moving near interfaces. Variations of the lift acting on the body and configurations of the interfaces are compared for various distances between the wing and the interface. The effects of the interface are compared with the effects of a solid wall. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A local time-stepping procedure for the space-time conservation element and solution element (CESE) method has been developed. This new procedure allows for variation of time-step size in both space and time, and can also be extended to become multi-dimensional solvers with structured/unstructured spatial grids. Moreover, it differs substantially in concept and methodology from the existing approaches. By taking full advantage of key concepts of the CESE method, in a simple and efficient manner it can enforce flux conservation across an interface separating grid zones of different time-step sizes. In particular, no correction pass is needed. Numerical experiments show that, for a variety of flow problems involving moving shock and flame discontinuities, accurate and robust numerical simulations can be achieved even with a reduction in time-step size on the order of 10 or higher for grids across a single interface.  相似文献

This paper describes the development of a semi‐Lagrangian computational method for simulating complex 3D two phase flows. The Navier–Stokes equations are solved separately in both fluids using a robust pseudo‐compressibility method able to deal with high density ratio. The interface tracking is achieved by the segment Lagrangian volume of fluid (SL‐VOF) method. The 2D SL‐VOF method using the concepts of VOF, piecewise linear interface calculation (PLIC) and Lagrangian advection of the interface is herein extended to 3D flows. Three different test cases of SL‐VOF 3D are presented for validation and comparison either with 2D flows or with other numerical methods. A good agreement is observed in each case. We present a high-order solver for simulating vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) at very challenging situations, for example, VIVs of a row of very closely placed objects with large relative displacements. This solver works on unstructured hybrid grids by employing the high-order tensor-product spectral difference method for quadrilateral grids and the Raviart-Thomas spectral difference method for triangular grids. To deal with the challenging situations where a traditional conforming moving mesh is incapable, we split a computational domain into nonoverlapping subdomains, where each interior subdomain encloses an object and moves freely with respect to its neighbors. A nonuniform sliding-mesh method that ensures high-order accuracy is developed to deal with sliding interfaces between subdomains. A monolithic approach is adopted to seamlessly couple the fluid and solid vibration equations. Moreover, the solver is parallelized to further improve its efficiency on distributed-memory computers. Through a series of numerical tests, we demonstrate that this solver is high-order accurate for both inviscid and viscous flows and has good parallel efficiency, making it ideal for VIV studies.  相似文献

Over the last decade, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has evolved into a valuable alternative to continuum computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for the numerical simulation of several complex fluid‐dynamic problems. Recent advances in lattice Boltzmann research have considerably extended the capability of LBM to handle complex geometries. Among these, a particularly remarkable option is represented by cell‐vertex finite‐volume formulations which permit LBM to operate on fully unstructured grids. The two‐dimensional implementation of unstructured LBM, based on the use of triangular elements, has shown capability of tolerating significant grid distortions without suffering any appreciable numerical viscosity effects, to second‐order in the mesh size. In this work, we present the first three‐dimensional generalization of the unstructured lattice Boltzmann technique (ULBE as unstructured lattice Boltzmann equation), in which geometrical flexibility is achieved by coarse‐graining the lattice Boltzmann equation in differential form, using tetrahedrical grids. This 3D extension is demonstrated for the case of 3D pipe flow and moderate Reynolds numbers flow past a sphere. The results provide evidence that the ULBE has significant potential for the accurate calculation of flows in complex 3D geometries. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Piecewise linear interface calculation (PLIC) schemes have been extensively employed in the volume‐of‐fluid (VOF) method for interface capturing in numerical simulations of multiphase flows. Polygonal unstructured meshes are often adopted because of their geometric flexibility and superiority in gradient calculation. An analytical interface reconstruction algorithm in the PLIC‐VOF method for arbitrary convex polygonal cells has been proposed in this study. The line interface at a given orientation within a polygonal cell is located by an analytical technique. It has been tested successfully for four different geometric shapes that are common in polygonal meshes. The computational efficiency of the present algorithm has been compared with several published schemes in the literature. The proposed algorithm has been shown to yield higher accuracy with reduction in computational complexity. A numerical simulation of a dam‐breaking problem has been performed using the proposed analytical PLIC technique on polygonal meshes. The results are in good agreement with experimental data available in the literature, which serves as a demonstration of its performance in a real multiphase flow.  相似文献

Polyhedral unstructured meshes are often adopted due to their geometric flexibility and superiority in gradient calculation. Four analytical interface reconstruction algorithms in the PLIC-VOF method for arbitrary convex polyhedral cells have been proposed in this study. A new adaptive quadtree method for simulating laminar viscous fluid problems with free surfaces and interfaces is presented in this paper. The Navier–Stokes equations are solved with a SIMPLE‐type scheme coupled with the Compressive Interface Capturing Scheme for Arbitrary Meshes (CICSAM) (Numerical prediction of two fluid systems with sharp interfaces, Ph.D. Thesis, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, 1997) volume of fluid (VoF) method and PLIC reconstruction of the volume fraction field during refinement and derefinement processes. The method is demonstrated for interface advection cases in translating and shearing flow fields and found to provide high interface resolution at low computational cost. The new method is also applied to simulation of the collapse of a water column and the results are in excellent agreement with other published data. The quadtree grids adapt to follow the movement of the free surface, whilst maintaining a band of the smallest cells surrounding the surface. The calculation is made on uniform and adapting quadtree grids and the accuracy of the quadtree calculation is shown to be the same as that made on the equivalent uniform grid. This paper develops methods for interface‐capturing in multiphase flows. The main novelties of these methods are as follows: (a) multi‐component modelling that embeds interface structures into the continuity equation; (b) a new family of triangle/tetrahedron finite elements, in particular, the P1DG‐P2(linear discontinuous between elements velocity and quadratic continuous pressure); (c) an interface‐capturing scheme based on compressive control volume advection methods and high‐order finite element interpolation methods; (d) a time stepping method that allows use of relatively large time step sizes; and (e) application of anisotropic mesh adaptivity to focus the numerical resolution around the interfaces and other areas of important dynamics. This modelling approach is applied to a series of pure advection problems with interfaces as well as to the simulation of the standard computational fluid dynamics benchmark test cases of a collapsing water column under gravitational forces (in two and three dimensions) and sloshing water in a tank. Two more test cases are undertaken in order to demonstrate the many‐material and compressibility modelling capabilities of the approach. Numerical simulations are performed on coarse unstructured meshes to demonstrate the potential of the methods described here to capture complex dynamics in multiphase flows. We present a spectral‐element discontinuous Galerkin thermal lattice Boltzmann method for fluid–solid conjugate heat transfer applications. Using the discrete Boltzmann equation, we propose a numerical scheme for conjugate heat transfer applications on unstructured, non‐uniform grids. We employ a double‐distribution thermal lattice Boltzmann model to resolve flows with variable Prandtl (Pr) number. Based upon its finite element heritage, the spectral‐element discontinuous Galerkin discretization provides an effective means to model and investigate thermal transport in applications with complex geometries. Our solutions are represented by the tensor product basis of the one‐dimensional Legendre–Lagrange interpolation polynomials. A high‐order discretization is employed on body‐conforming hexahedral elements with Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre quadrature nodes. Thermal and hydrodynamic bounce‐back boundary conditions are imposed via the numerical flux formulation that arises because of the discontinuous Galerkin approach. As a result, our scheme does not require tedious extrapolation at the boundaries, which may cause loss of mass conservation. We compare solutions of the proposed scheme with an analytical solution for a solid–solid conjugate heat transfer problem in a 2D annulus and illustrate the capture of temperature continuities across interfaces for conductivity ratio γ > 1. We also investigate the effect of Reynolds (Re) and Grashof (Gr) number on the conjugate heat transfer between a heat‐generating solid and a surrounding fluid. Steady‐state results are presented for Re = 5?40 and Gr = 105?106. In each case, we discuss the effect of Re and Gr on the heat flux (i.e. Nusselt number Nu) at the fluid–solid interface. Our results are validated against previous studies that employ finite‐difference and continuous spectral‐element methods to solve the Navier–Stokes equations.
