The tensile stress–strain behavior and fracture properties of some new soybean oil based polymeric materials were investigated at room temperature. These materials were prepared by the cationic copolymerization of regular soybean oil, low saturation soybean oil (LoSatSoy oil), or conjugated LoSatSoy oil with styrene and the diene comonomers divinylbenzene, norbornadiene, or dicyclopentadiene in a process initiated by boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3 · OEt2) or related modified initiators. These new polymeric materials exhibited tensile stress–strain behavior ranging from soft rubbers through ductile to relatively brittle plastics. The Young's moduli of these polymers varied from 3 to 615 MPa, the ultimate tensile strengths varied from 0.3 to 21 MPa, and the elongation at break varied from 1.6 to 300%. These properties are obviously related to their crosslink densities. The conjugated LoSatSoy oil polymers had higher mechanical properties than the corresponding LoSatSoy oil and regular soybean oil polymers with the same stoichiometry. Some conjugated LoSatSoy oil polymers with appropriate stoichiometries showed yielding behavior in the tensile test process. A variety of new polymer materials can thus be prepared by varying the stoichiometry, the type of soybean oil, and the crosslinking agent. These soybean oil based polymers possessed mechanical properties comparable to those of commercially available rubbery materials and conventional plastics and thus may serve as replacements in many applications. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New polymeric materials have been prepared by the cationic copolymerization of regular soybean oil, low saturation soybean oil, i.e. LoSatSoy oil, or conjugated LoSatSoy oil with styrene and divinylbenzene, norbornadiene or dicyclopentadiene initiated by boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF 3·OEt 2) or related modified initiators. The effects of the stoichiometry, the type of soybean oil and the alkene comonomer on the damping behavior of the resulting polymers have been investigated. The damping properties have been quantitatively evaluated by the loss tangent maximum (tan δ) max, the temperature range ΔT for efficient damping (tan δ > 0.3), and the integrals of the linear tan δ v. temperature curves (tan δ area, TA). These bulk materials are composed primarily of soybean oil‐styrene‐divinylbenzene random copolymers with considerable variability in the backbone compositions. The good damping properties of the soybean oil polymers are presumably determined by the presence of fatty acid ester side groups directly attached to the polymer backbone and the segmental heterogeneities resulting from crosslinking. In general, crosslinking reduces the (tan δ) max and the TA values, but broadens the region of efficient damping (ΔT). Soybean oil polymeric materials with appropriate compositions and crosslink densities are capable of efficiently damping over a temperature region in excess of 110 °C and provide noise and vibration attenuation over broad temperature and frequency ranges. A new class of linear unsaturated polyphosphate esters based on divanillylidene cyclohexanone possessing liquid crystalline‐cum‐photocrosslinkable properties have been synthesized from 2,6‐bis[n‐hydroxyalkyloxy(vanillylidene)]cyclohexanone [n = 6,8,10] with various alkyl/aryl phosphorodichloridates in chloroform at ambient temperature. The resultant polymers were characterized by intrinsic viscosity, FT‐IR, 1H, 13C, and 31P‐NMR spectroscopy. All the polymers showed anisotropic behavior under hot stage optical polarized microscope (HOPM). The liquid crystalline textures of the polymers became more transparent with increasing spacer length. The thermal behavior of the polymers was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The Tg, Tm, and Ti of the polymers decreased with increasing flexible methylene chain. The photocrosslinking property of the polymer was investigated by UV light/UV spectroscopy; the crosslinking proceeds via 2π‐2π cycloaddition reactions of the divanillylidene exocyclic double bond of the polymer backbone. The pendant alkyloxy containing polymers show faster crosslinking than the pendant phenyloxy containing polymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A–B–A stereoblock polymers with atactic poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a hydrophilic block (either A or B) and a non‐water‐soluble block consisting of isotactic PNIPAM were synthesized using reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations. Yttrium trifluoromethanesulfonate was used in the tacticity control, and bifunctional S,S′‐bis(α,α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetic acid)‐trithiocarbonate (BDAT) was utilized as a RAFT agent. Chain structures of the A–B–A stereoblock copolymers were determined using 1H NMR, SEC, and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. BDAT proved to be an efficient RAFT agent in the controlled synthesis of stereoregular PNIPAM, and both atactic and isotactic PNIPAM were successfully used as macro RAFT agents. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the resulting polymers were measured by differential scanning calorimetry. We found that the Tg of isotactic PNIPAM is molecular weight dependent and varies in the present case between 115 and 158 °C. Stereoblock copolymers show only one Tg, indicating the miscibility of the blocks. Correspondingly, the Tg may be varied by varying the mutual lengths of the A and B blocks. The phase separation of aqueous solutions upon increasing temperature is strongly affected by the isotactic blocks. At a fixed concentration (5 mg/mL), an increase of the isotacticity of the stereoblock copolymers decreases the demixing temperature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phenyl methacrylate and 1‐naphthyl methacrylate were polymerized in microemulsions using stearyltrimethylammonium chloride, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and a mixture of nonionic Triton surfactants to form latexes that were 20–30 nm in diameter. A temperature of 70 °C was needed to obtain polymers using thermal initiation. The tacticities of poly(phenyl methacrylate) (PPhMA) (55% rr) and poly(1‐naphthyl methacrylate) (P‐1‐NM) (47% rr) were the same as those of the polymers prepared in toluene solutions. The weight average molecular weights were 1 × 106 and 5 × 105 g/mol for PPhMA and P‐1‐NM prepared in microemulsions with very broad distributions. PPhMA samples from microemulsions and solution had the same Tg = 127 °C. P‐1‐NM from microemulsions had Tg = 145–147 °C compared with Tg = 142 °C for P‐1‐NM from solution. The molecular weights and the glass‐transition temperatures of both PPhMA and P‐1‐NM from microemulsions are substantially higher than any previously reported. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The ability to prepare high Tg low shrinkage thiol–ene materials is attractive for applications such as coatings and dental restoratives. However, thiol and nonacrylated vinyl materials typically consist of a flexible backbone, limiting the utility of these polymers. Hence, it is of importance to synthesize and investigate thiol and vinyl materials of varying backbone chemistry and stiffness. Here, we investigate the effect of backbone chemistry and functionality of norbornene resins on polymerization kinetics and glass transition temperature (Tg) for several thiol–norbornene materials. Results indicate that Tgs as high as 94 °C are achievable in thiol–norbornene resins of appropriately controlled chemistry. Furthermore, both the backbone chemistry and the norbornene moiety are important factors in the development of high Tg materials. In particular, as much as a 70 °C increase in Tg was observed in a norbornene–thiol specimen when compared with a sample prepared using allyl ether monomer of analogous backbone chemistry. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel AB2‐type azide monomers such as 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)carbonyl azide (monomer 1) , 3,5‐bis(methylol)phenyl carbonyl azide (monomer 2) , 4‐(methylol phenoxy) isopthaloyl azide (monomer 3) , and 5‐(methylol) isopthaloyl azide (monomer 4) were synthesized. Melt and solution polymerization of these monomers yielded hydroxyl‐ and amine‐terminated hyperbranched polyurethanes with and without flexible ether groups. The structures of theses polymers were established using FT‐IR and NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights (Mw) of the polymers were found to vary from 3.2 × 103 to 5.5 × 104 g/mol depending on the experimental conditions used. The thermal properties of the polymers were evaluated using TGA and DSC: the polymer obtained from monomer ( 1 ) exhibited lowest Tg and highest thermal stability and the polymer obtained from monomer ( 2 ) registered the highest Tg and lowest thermal stability. All the polymers displayed fluorescence maxima in the 425–525 nm range with relatively narrow peak widths indicating that they had pure and intense fluorescence. Also, the polymers formed charge transfer (CT) complexes with electron acceptor molecules such as 7,7,8,8‐tetracyano‐quino‐dimethane (TCNQ) and 1,1,2,2‐tetracyanoethane (TCNE) as evidenced by UV‐visible spectra. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dihydridocarbonyltris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium catalyzes the regiospecific anti‐Markovnikov addition of an ortho C? H bond of benzophenone across the C? C double bonds of α,ω‐bis(trimethylsilyloxy)copoly(dimethylsiloxane/vinylmethylsiloxane) (99:1), α,ω‐bis(vinyldimethylsilyloxy)poly(dimethylsiloxane), and 1,3‐divinyltetramethyldisiloxane to yield α,ω‐bis(trimethylsilyloxy)copoly[dimethylsiloxane/2‐(2′‐benzophenonyl)ethylmethylsiloxane]), α,ω‐bis[2‐(2′‐benzophenonyl)ethyldimethylsilyloxy]poly(dimethylsiloxane), and 1,3‐bis[2‐(2′‐benzophenonyl)ethyl]tetramethyldisiloxane, respectively. These materials have been characterized with 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR and IR spectroscopy. Their molecular weight distributions have been determined by gel permeation chromatography. The thermal stability of the polymers has been measured by thermogravimetric analysis, and their glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) have been determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The molecular weight distribution, thermal stability, and Tg's of the modified polysiloxanes are similar to those of the precursor polymers. The molecular weights of these materials can be significantly increased via heating to 300 °C for 1 h. This may be due to crosslinking, by pyrocondensation, of pendant anthracene groups, which are produced by the pyrolysis of the attached ortho‐alkyl benzophenones. UV spectroscopy of the pyrolysate of 1,3‐bis[2‐(2′‐benzophenonyl)ethyl]tetramethyldisiloxane has confirmed the presence of pendant anthracene groups. Thermal crosslinking by the pyrocondensation of pendant anthracene groups has been verified by the pyrolysis of α,ω‐bis(trimethylsilyloxy)copoly[dimethylsiloxane/2‐(9′‐anthracenyl)ethylmethylsiloxane] (97:3). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinking copolymerization of butyl methacrylate with a small amount of divinylbenzene (DVB) was carried out using single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization initiated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and catalyzed by Cu(0)/N‐ligand in N,N‐dimethylformamide to produce a highly oil‐absorbing gel. The polymerization, gelation process, and oil‐absorbing properties were studied in detail. Analysis of monomer conversion with reaction time showed that the polymerization followed first‐order kinetics for both linear and crosslinking polymerization before gelation. Higher levels of DVB led to earlier gelation and the influence of N‐ligand on gelation was also significant. Under optimal conditions, oil absorption of the prepared gel to chloroform could reach 42.1 g·g?1. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013, 51, 3233–3239  相似文献

Several new side‐chain liquid crystalline (LC) polysiloxanes and elastomers ( IP ‐ VIP ) bearing fluorinated mesogenic units and crosslinking mesogens were synthesized by a one‐step hydrosilylation reaction with poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane, a fluorine‐containing LC monomer 4′‐undec‐10‐enoyloxy‐biphenyl‐4‐yl 4‐fluoro‐benzoate and a crosslinking LC monomer 4′‐(4‐allyloxy‐benzoxy)‐biphenyl‐4‐yl 4‐allyloxy‐benzoate. The chemical structures and LC properties of the monomers and polymers were characterized by use of various experimental techniques such as FTIR, 1H‐NMR, EA, TGA, DSC, POM and XRD. The effect of crosslinking mesogens on mesomorphic properties of the fluorinated LC polymers was studied as well. The obtained polymers and elastomers were soluble in many solvents such as toluene, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, and so forth. The temperatures at which 5% weight loss occurred (Td) were greater than 250°C for all the polymers, and the weight of residue near 600°C increased slightly with increase of the crosslinking mesogens in the fluorinated polymer systems. The samples IP , IIP , IIIP and IVP showed both smectic A and nematic phases when they were heated and cooled, but VP and VIP exhibited only a nematic mesophase. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of polymers increased slightly with increase of crosslinking mesogens in the polymer systems, but the mesophase–isotropic phase transition temperature (Ti) and smectic A–nematic mesophase transition temperature (TS‐N) decreased slightly. It suggests that the temperature range of the mesophase became narrow with the increase of crosslinking mesogens for all the fluorinated polymers and elastomers. In XRD curves, the intensity of sharp reflections at low angle decreased with increase of crosslinking mesogens in the fluorinated polymers systems, indicating that the smectic order derived from fluorinated mesogenic units should be destroyed by introduction of more crosslinking mesogens. A serial of late transition metal complexes, which bearing Benzocyclohexane–ketoarylimine ligand and named as Mt(benzocyclohexane–ketoarylimino)2 {Mt(bchkai)2: Mt=Ni or Pd; bchkai=C10H8(O)CN(Ar)CH3; Ar=naphthyl or fluoryl}, have been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of the ligands and nickel complex have been confirmed by X‐ray single‐crystal analyses. The nickel complexes exhibited very high activity up to 2.7 × 105 gpolymer/molNi·h and palladium complexes showed high activity up to 2.3 × 105 gpolymer/molPd·h for norbornene (NB) homo‐polymerization with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane as cocatalyst. The four complexes were effective for copolymerization of NB and 5‐norbornene‐2‐carboxylic acid methyl ester (NB‐COOCH3) in relatively high activities (0.1–2.4 × 105 gpolymer/molMt·h) and produced the addition‐type copolymers with relatively high molecular weights (0.5 × 105–1.2 × 105 g/mol) as well as narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI < 2 for all polymers). Influences of the metals and comonomer feed content on the polymerization activity as well as on the incorporation rates (20.9–42.6%) were investigated. The achieved NB/NB‐COOCH3 copolymers were confirmed to be noncrystalline, exhibited good thermal stability (Td > 400°C) and showed good solubility in common organic solvents. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, the effect of irradiation temperature on sol fraction-dose relationship of tluoropolymers was studied. It was found that the increasing of irradiation temperature can result in the decreasing of βvalue of fluoropolymer, which increases the crosslinking probability of fluoropolymer. The relationship between crosslinking parameter βand irradiation temperature (T_i)of fluoropolymer is established as follows:β=2.2×10~(-3) T_g+4×10~(-4)(T_g-T_i)+0.206.values of some tluoropolymers calculated from the above expression are in agreement with the experimental values.  相似文献

A new monomer, 2,6‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)naphthalene (BPOBON), was easily synthesized via simple synthetic procedures from readily available materials. A series of novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing both 2,6‐naphthylene moieties and amide linkages in the main chains were prepared by the Friedel‐Crafts acylation solution copolycondensation of isophthaloyl chloride with a mixture of BPOBON and N,N'‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)‐1,4‐phenylenediamine (BPBPPD), over a wide range of BPOBON/BPBPPD molar ratios, in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 and N‐methylpyrrolidone in 1,2‐dichloroethane. All the polymers are semicrystalline and had remarkably increased Tgs over the conventional PEEK and PEKK due to the incorporation of naphthalene and amide linkages in the main chains. The polymers with 50–70 mol% BPOBON had not only high Tgs of 179–186 °C, but also moderate Tms of 321–328 °C, which are very suitable for the melt processing. These polymers had tensile strengths of 101.5–107.1 MPa, Young's moduli of 2.13–2.39 GPa, and elongations at break of 11.8–13.7% and exhibited excellent thermal stability and good resistance to organic solvents. Graded‐index plastic optical fibers, composed of doped polymers, have advantages over conventional glass optical fibers, but need to be developed further for practical application. Here, a variety of aromatic sulfide dopants were synthesized, and their effects on the refractive indexes and glass transition temperatures (Tg) of poly(methyl methacrylate) and methyl 2‐chloroacrylate/2,2,2‐trichloroethyl methacrylate copolymers were studied. While polymers containing large dopants exhibited relatively high refractive indices, their Tg values were low, making these materials unsuitable for graded‐index plastic optical fiber applications. Six dopants yielded polymers that exhibited higher Tg values than the conventionally used (diphenyl sulfide)‐doped polymer. The dopant dibenzothiophene, in particular, yielded polymers with the highest refractive indexes and Tg values, and polymers containing (phenylthio)benzene dopants also performed well. New diene and dithiol monomers, based on aromatic imides such as benzophenone‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxylic diimide were synthesized and used in thiol‐ene polymerizations which yield poly(imide‐co‐thioether)s. These linear polymers exhibit limited solubility in various organic solvents. The molecular weights of the polymers were found to decrease with increasing imide content. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of these polymers is dependent on imide content, with Tg values ranging from ?55 °C (with no imide) up to 13 °C (with 70% imide). These thermal property improvements are due to the H‐bonding and rigidity of the aromatic imide moieties. Thermal degradation, as studied by thermogravimetric analysis, was not significantly different to the nonimide containing thiol‐ene polymers made using trimethyloylpropane diallyl ether and 3,5‐dioxa‐1,8‐dithiooctane. It is expected that such monomers may lead to increased glass transition temperatures in other thiol‐ene polymer systems as these normally exhibit low glass transition temperatures. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Allyl ether‐functional polycarbonates, synthesized by organocatalytic ring‐opening polymerization of the six‐membered cyclic carbonate monomer 2‐allyloxymethyl‐2‐ethyltrimethylene carbonate, were used to prepare non‐polyether polymer electrolytes. UV‐crosslinking of the allyl side groups provided mechanically stable electrolytes with improved molecular flexibility—Tg below ?20 °C—and higher ionic conductivity—up to 4.3 × 10?7 S/cm at 25 °C and 5.2 × 10?6 S/cm at 60 °C—due to the plasticizing properties of the allyl ether side groups. The electrolyte function was additionally demonstrated in thin‐film Li battery cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 2128–2135  相似文献

This article discusses a facile and inexpensive reaction process for preparing polypropylene‐based graft copolymers containing an isotactic polypropylene (i‐PP) main chain and several functional polymer side chains. The chemistry involves an i‐PP polymer precursor containing several pendant vinylbenzene groups, which is prepared through the Ziegler–Natta copolymerization of propylene and 1,4‐divinylbenzene mediated by an isospecific MgCl2‐supported TiCl4 catalyst. The selective monoenchainment of 1,4‐divinylbenzene comonomers results in pendant vinylbenzene groups quantitatively transformed into benzyl halides by hydrochlorination. In the presence of CuCl/pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, the in situ formed, multifunctional, polymeric atom transfer radical polymerization initiators carry out graft‐from polymerization through controlled radical polymerization. Some i‐PP‐based graft copolymers, including poly(propylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) and poly(propylene‐g‐styrene), have been prepared with controlled compositions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electro‐optic side‐chain polymers have been synthesized by the post‐functionalization of methacrylate isocyanate polymers with novel phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge (FTC) nonlinear optical chromophores. For this application, FTC‐based chromophores were modified in their electronic donor structure, exhibiting much larger molecular hyperpolarizabilities compared with the benchmark FTC. Of these new chromophores, absorption spectra, hyper‐Rayleigh scattering experiment, and thermal analysis were carried out to confirm availability as effective nonlinear optical units for electro‐optic side‐chain polymers. The electro‐optic coefficients (r33) of obtained polymers were investigated in the process of in situ poling by monitoring the temperature, current flow, poling field, and electro‐optic signal. Compared with the nonsubstituted analogue, benxyloxy modified FTC chromophore significantly achieved higher nonlinear optical property, exhibiting molecular hyperpolarizability at 1.9 μm of 4600 × 10?30 esu and an r33 value of 150 pm/V at the wavelength of 1.31 μm. Synthesized electro‐optic polymers showed high glass transition temperature (Tg), so that the temporal stability examination exhibited >78% of the electro‐optic intensity remaining at 85 °C over 500 h. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The formation of carbonaceous clusters in ion‐irradiated polymer films was investigated extensively. Information about these clusters may be obtained with ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy. The optical band gap (Eg), calculated from the absorption edge of the UV spectra of these polymers, can be correlated to the number of carbon atoms (N) in a cluster with the modified Tauc equation. The structure of the cluster is also related to Eg; for example, a six‐membered‐benzene‐ring‐type structure has an Eg of ≈5.3 eV, whereas a buckminsterfullerene‐type structure has an Eg of ≈4.9 eV. These clusters are responsible for the electrical conductivity in these films. In this work, polycarbonate films (20 μm thick) were irradiated with 45‐MeV Li ions at fluences of 1 × 1012 to 1 × 1013 cm−2 and were characterized with UV–vis spectroscopy and impedance measurements. The Eg values, calculated from the absorption edge in the 280–315‐nm region with the Tauc relation, varied from 4.39 to 4.35 eV for the pristine and various irradiated samples, respectively. The cluster size showed a range of 60–62 carbon atoms per cluster. The sheet conductivity (σdc) and loss (tan δ) values of 10−16 Ω−1cm−1 and 10−3 for the pristine sample changed to 10−15 Ω−1cm−1 and 10−2, respectively, for the irradiated samples. This increase in the values of σdc and tan δ may be correlated to the increase in the size of the carbonaceous clusters. This study provides insight into the mechanism of electrical conductivity in irradiated polymers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 1589–1594, 2000  相似文献

Generally, protection and deprotection procedures of amino groups are required in preparing propargyl ether‐containing benzoxazines. In this study, we report a facile, deprotection‐free preparation of a propargyl ether‐containing phosphinated benzoxazine (2) from the nucleophilic substitution of a phenolic OH‐containing phosphinated benzoxazine (1) and propargyl bromide in the catalysis of potassium carbonate. The structure of (2) was characterized and confirmed by a high‐resolution mass spectrum, 1H, 13C, 1H‐1H, 1H‐13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, and X‐ray single crystal diffractogram. infrared (IR) and differential scanning calorimetry were used to monitor the ring‐opening of benzoxazine and crosslinking of propargyl ether. The microstructure and the structure–property relationship of the resulting homopolymers and copolymers are discussed. The Tg of homopolymer of (2) is 208 °C by dynamic mechanical analysis, the coefficient of thermal expansion is 43 ppm/°C, and Td 5% (N2) is 393 °C, respectively, which are higher than those of the homopolymer of (1) . Similar trends were observed in the copolymerization system. The results demonstrate the beneficial effect of crosslinking afforded by the propargyl ether group is higher than that by the phenolic OH group. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
