We study one-dimensional Sisyphus cooling on the transition of 87 Rb atoms in the electric field created by two counter-propagating linearly polarized laser beams with an angle of between the polarization directions. The neighbouring F '=0 and F '=2 excited states are found to play an important role in the cooling mechanism, e.g., by inhibiting a significant population of the velocity-selective dark state. Our experimental data, such as temperatures and probe absorption coefficients, agree well with the results of quantum Monte-Carlo wavefunction simulations. We report a study of transverse laser cooling on a metastable helium beam using spectrally broadened diode lasers (“white light") to increase its flux. For this purpose, beam profile and atomic flux versus laser power and other parameters have been characterized. We have performed experiments to compare this technique with other transverse cooling methods using monochromatic light. Best results are obtained with a “ziz-zag" configuration using “white light". We report on a theoretical and experimental investigation of 39K magneto-optical trapping. The small hyperfine splitting characterizing the upper level of the cooling transition affects the cooling mechanism. In order to model the atom-laser interaction, the whole level structure of the D2 line has to be taken into account. Two different regimes have been recognized, one optimizing the loading of the trap, the second minimizing the temperature of the atoms. We investigated these two regimes experimentally and found results in agreement with the theoretical predictions. We report the observation of resonances in the intensity correlation spectra of a 3D rubidium optical lattice, which we attribute to light scattering from propagating atomic density fluctuations in the lattice. This process is the spontaneous analog of the stimulated scattering mechanism recently described by Courtois et al.. We investigate the dependence of the new resonances on the lattice angle and show that they disappear for large angles, thus resolving previous discrepancies on the subject. We report elastic integral, momentum transfer and differential cross sections for electron scattering by N2O for energies up to 50 eV. These results were obtained at the static-exchange approximation with the Schwinger Multichannel Method with Pseudopotentials [M.H.F. Bettega, L.G. Ferreira and M.A.P. Lima, Phys. Rev. A 47, 1111 (1993)]. In general our results show good agreement with experimental data and with other theoretical results but some discrepancies are found. We have also found a shape resonance around 4 eV in agreement with previous calculations using the R-matrix Method of Sarpal et al. [J. Phys. B 29, 857 (1996)]. On the other hand, the existence of a resonance at about 13 eV, clearly seen by the Schwinger Variational Iterative Method [Michelin et al., J. Phys. B 29, 2115 (1996)], can not be confirmed by our calculations. At this energy, our cross sections show a broad bump with no clear resonant behavior given by the eigenphase sum. We study the deflection of sodium atoms by a resonantly tuned pulsed standing wave of high field intensity. The effects of the phase fluctuations of the pulsed laser field on the momentum distribution of the deflected atoms are experimentally determined. The results are explained using a theoretical model based on the generalized density matrix formalism of two-level atoms. We present here a detailed study of the behaviour of a three dimensional Brownian motor based on cold atoms in a double optical lattice [P. Sj?lund et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 190602 (2006)]. This includes both experiments and numerical simulations of a Brownian particle. The potentials used are spatially and temporally symmetric, but combined spatiotemporal symmetry is broken by phase shifts and asymmetric transfer rates between potentials. The diffusion of atoms in the optical lattices is rectified and controlled both in direction and speed along three dimensions. We explore a large range of experimental parameters, where irradiances and detunings of the optical lattice lights are varied within the dissipative regime. Induced drift velocities in the order of one atomic recoil velocity have been achieved.  相似文献

We have measured the lifetime of the metastable 3D 5/2 level in Ca+ using the “quantum jump" technique on a single stored and laser cooled ion in a linear Paul trap. We found a linear dependence of the measured decay rate on the power of the laser which repumps the ions from the long lived 3D 3/2 level. This can be explained by off-resonant depletion of the 3D 5/2 level. The proper lifetime of this level is obtained by a linear extrapolation of the measured lifetime to zero laser power. We obtain 1100(18) ms in agreement with theoretical calculations. The observed systematic change of the decay rate resolves discrepancies between earlier experiments in which this effect had not been considered. Measurements on a linear chain of 10 laser cooled ions showed unexpected frequent coincidences of quantum jumps within our observation time of 20 ms. This indicates a so far unexplained correlation between the ions in the chain at large distances. Received 3 March 1999  相似文献

An atom faucet   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We present a simple and efficient source of slow atoms. From a background vapour loaded magneto-optical trap (MOT), a thin laser beam extracts a continuous jet of cold rubidium atoms. The jet that is typical to leaking MOT systems is created without any optical parts placed inside the vacuum chamber. We also present a simple three dimensional numerical simulation of the atomic motion in the presence of these multiple saturating laser fields combined with the inhomogeneous magnetic field of the MOT. At a pressure of P Rb87 = 10-8 mbar and with a moderate laser power of 10 mW per beam, we generate a flux Φ = 1.3×108 atoms/s with a mean velocity of 14 m/s and a divergence of 10 mrad. Reflection of thermal atoms by a pulsed standing wave   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reflection of thermal atoms by a pulsed standing wave with a duration in the nanosecond range is studied. The momentum distribution of the reflected atoms is determined by calculations based on the adiabatic atom-photon interactions. It is shown that with a proper choice of the field intensity and the pulse duration the standing-wave pattern functions as a row of independent atom mirrors. At an optimum choice of the parameter values, the fraction of the elastically reflected atoms is more than 20%. Furthermore, we show that the pulsed standing-wave mirror can be used to manipulate their final momentum distribution. When using laser pulses with an intensity of several tens of MW/cm2, tens of thousands of atoms can be reflected by a single laser pulse. We have constructed a magneto-optical funnel for He atoms and studied its properties using a laser cooled, highly mono-energetic atomic beam. A simple model of its action allows us to quantitatively understand the observed spot size and “focal length”. We show that for a fast beam, the velocity damping coefficient plays an important role in determining the focal length of the device. The observed spot size is limited mainly by transverse heating processes which impose a transverse velocity spread. The device also permits easy scanning of the focussed spot. A continuous cold atomic beam from a magneto-optical trap   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We have developed and characterized a new method to produce a continuous beam of cold atoms from a standard vapour-cell magneto-optical trap (MOT). The experimental apparatus is very simple. Using a single laser beam it is possible to hollow out in the source MOT a direction of unbalanced radiation pressure along which cold atoms can be accelerated out of the trap. The transverse cooling process that takes place during the extraction reduces the beam divergence. The atomic beam is used to load a magneto-optical trap operating in an ultra-high vacuum environment. At a vapour pressure of 10-8mbar in the loading cell, we have produced a continuous flux of 7×107atoms/s at the recapture cell with a mean velocity of 14 m/s. A comparison of this method with a pulsed transfer scheme is presented. Received 19 February 2001  相似文献

A simple theoretical approach based on Coulomb-Volkov states is introduced to predict ionisation of atoms by intense laser pulses in cases where the effective interaction time does not exceed one or two optical cycles [M. Nisoli et al., Opt. Lett. 22, 522 (1997)]. Under these conditions, the energy distributions of ejected electrons predicted by this non-perturbative approach are in very good agreement with “exact" results obtained by a full numerical treatment. The agreement is all the better that the principal quantum number of the initial state is high. For very strong fields, most electrons are ejected at an energy which is close to the classical kinetic energy that would be transferred to free electrons by the electromagnetic field during the pulse. The power of the present approach appears when keV. In this region, full numerical treatments become very lengthy and finally do not converge. However, the present Coulomb-Volkov theory still makes reliable predictions in very short computer times. Received 19 November 1999 and Received in final form 19 January 2000  相似文献

We present a method for the direct measurement of the Wigner-function matrix for complex vibronic states of a trapped atom, that is suited to analyse the entanglement between two motional degrees of freedom and the internal electronic dynamics. It is a generalisation of the method for the determination of vibronic quantum states [S. Wallentowitz, R.L. de Matos Filho, W. Vogel, Phys. Rev. A 56, 1205 (1997)] in conjunction with the scheme for the direct observation of the Wigner function of a single motional degree of freedom [L.G. Lutterbach, L. Davidovich, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2547 (1997)]. The major advantage of the present method is that it reduces the experimental efforts substantially. On the other hand, it is demonstrated that the nonlinear vibronic coupling necessary for this method turns out to be its main limitation. Received: 5 August 1998  相似文献

We show first results and systematic investigations of a matter wave interferometer with the K2 molecule, using a transition between the electronic ground state X and the state b . This spin forbidden transition is observable due to spin-orbit coupling between the states b and A . The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations, which show the power of the interferometer to observe small phase shifts by weak interactions. Received 13 March 2000  相似文献

The deflection of Ne atoms in the metastable state 3 P 2 by coherent transfer of the momenta of 4 or 8 photons is demonstrated, based on the technique developed for coherent population transfer with delayed pulses (STIRAP). After deflection the intensity profile of the isotope of mass 20 is fully seperated from that for the undeflected atoms of mass 22. It is furthermore shown, how the interplay of Larmor precession of the electronic magnetic moment and the sequential deflection in two spatially separated zones can be used to measure the magnetic field, integrated over the flight-path between the transfer zones. We present calculations of the fivefold differential cross-section (FDCS) for double photoionization of helium at excess energies of 6 and 20 eV above threshold. Our results are obtained using for the final double-continuum state a product of three Coulomb wave functions, with the Sommerfeld parameters modified to describe the strength of interaction of any two particles affected by the third particle. Our calculations are compared with recent absolute measurements by D?rner et al. (Phys. Rev. A 57, 1074 (1998)), both in coplanar and non-coplanar geometries. Very good agreement is obtained for the shape of the angular distributions, and differences in the absolute magnitude exist in comparison with the standard choice of Sommerfeld parameters. We report on a calculation of K, L and M inner-shell ionization energy in atoms with atomic numbers in the range . Many-body effects are evaluated for all n =1, 2, and 3 hole states. Those include correlation and effects due to the auto-ionizing nature of the hole states (Auger shift). For high Z we add recent corrected nuclear polarization, and several second-order vacuum polarization corrections. K and L ionization energies are compared with experimental X-ray absorption edges measurements. Excellent agreement with rare gazes and metal vapor measurements is found. We also compare our calculations with X-ray transition energies for all K and L lines that involve K, L and M holes. Finally we use K X-ray lines to deduce an hydrogenlike 1 s Lamb shift for several heavy elements, with far better accuracy than has been obtained by direct measurements of hydrogenlike ions.
