The problem of gauge dependence of the effective action in multidimensional supergravities (SG) is investigated. As an example d=5 SGs are considered. The convenient gauge-dependent effective action (EA) and gauge-invariant Vilkovisky-De Witt EA in d=5, N=2, 4, 6, 8 SGs on the background R4×S1 with accuracy to linear curvature terms are obtained. The convenient three-gauge-parameter-dependent EA in d=5, N=2 gauged SG on the background R4×S1 is calculated. The Vilkovisky-De Witt EA in d=5 SGs on the background R4×S1 at non-zero temperature is also obtained.  相似文献

The vacuum energy in Kaluza-Klein theories, as calculated at the extremals of the generating functional of vertices, is gauge independent. The gauge dependence of ultraviolet behavior of gauge theories is examined on the basis of renormalization-group equation. Non-Abelian gauge theories are confirmed to be asymptotically free in an arbitrary gauge. It is also shown that the effective gauge parameter approaches a finite value in the ultraviolet limit in contrast with the case of QED.  相似文献

The gauge hierarchy at the tree level in supergravity GUTS is examined. General criteria on the superpotential are given which guarantee the hierarchy to all orders in the gravitational coupling constant κ. Thus for theories obeying these criteria the light Higgs VEVs are protected from both the Planck and GUT masses. An effective potential for these light fields is constructed.  相似文献

We discuss the gauge dependence of the renormalization group parameters in a class of ghost-free non-abelian gauge theories. We show, using the n-dimensional regularization with the “minimal” renormalization procedure, that these parameters are gauge independent.  相似文献

An enormous discrepancy between the running coupling constants obtained in twostandard renormalization schemes is found within broken scalar QED. One of these renormalization schemes is shown to be manifestly gauge independent, whereas the other turns out to be highly gauge dependent. Supercovariant derivatives and supercovariant field strengths are used to put the fermionic equations of motion derived from supergravity theories in an elegant form. These results apply also to the SO(4) extended supergravity theory which is presented here. We discuss how to obtain more compact proofs of the invariance of the supergravity actions already known. In particular for the SO(2) theory a set of new auxilary fields is introduced which linearizes the equation of motion of the spin-32 field.  相似文献

Extended supergravity theories with global O(2) and SO(3) internal symmetry have recently been constructed, and a mechanism which implements local O(2) and SO(3) gauge invariance is given here. The introduction of a minimal gauge coupling automatically leads to a spin-32 mass and a cosmological term in order to preserve local supersymmetry. Local internal symmetry for a spin-32 field is related to spontaneous breakdown of global supersymmetry. Perturbation theory results which confirm the physical consistency of the system are given.  相似文献

We construct a family of equivalent two-loop string theory effective actions, incorporating dilaton background field contributions, which subsumes all those presently available in the literature. We identify in particular two one-parameter subsets of this family, one of which consists of actions with no dilaton dependence (beyond an overall factor) and another which corresponds in a natural way to renormalisation scheme dependence in the underlying non-linear σ-model. Corresponding to the family of actions we construct a family of renormalisation group dilaton β-functions and show that they are related by renormalisation group transformations.  相似文献

The gauge dependence of the effective potential determining the Kaluza-Klein radius self-consistently is contrasted to that belonging to a gauge theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking at finite temperature. Formally the two quantities are computed in the same way and obey the same Ward identities, but a gauge-independent approximation scheme is possible only in the latter case because of the coupling between the Goldstone field and the longitudinal vector field. Summary We analyse the effective action for gauge fields in odd dimensions, obtained by integrating out the fermions in the Feynman path integral. In particular, we discuss the generation of a Chern-Simons term by massless fermions minimally coupled to an Abelian gauge field. We review two methods of revealing the presence of a Chern-Simons term in the effective action: first, as the consequence of a nontrivial holonomy of the fermionic ground state, then as the result of the generation of an anomalous imaginary part of the effective action. We derive the most general form of the anomalous effective action at the lowest nontrivial order of a derivative expansion in time. We discuss the implications of our analysis for the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect as well as for the quantization of anomalous theories. To speed up publication, the authors have agreed not to receive proofs which have been supervised by the Scientific Committee.  相似文献

We argue that the idea that the dynamics of a gauge theory simplifies in the limit N → ∞, where N is the number of colors, can be invoked even if the gauge group is an exceptional Lie group, rather than one of the classical groups. We also point out that quantum tunneling phenomena can in some cases survive in the N → ∞ limit, contrary to the usual claim that the N → ∞ limit is “classical.”  相似文献

Chirality transformations and generalized duality transformations are used to show that the extended O(2) and O(3) supergravity theories in fact have a U(2) and a U(3) invariance respectively. The coupling of these supergravity theories to matter multiplets having global extended supersymmetry is considered. In one case where the matter multiplet has a non-vanishing central charge, one finds a minimal coupling of the vector field of the supergravity multiplet.  相似文献

Perturbative and global anomalies in supergravity theories are reviewed. The existence of a matter and gauge coupled supergravity theory in six dimensions withE 6×E 7×U(1) symmetry and highly nontrivial anomaly cancellations is emphasised.
