A series of new reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents with cyanobenzyl R groups were synthesized. In comparison with other dithioester RAFT agents, these new RAFT agents were odorless or low‐odor, and this made them much easier to handle. The kinetics of methyl methacrylate radical polymerizations mediated by these RAFT agents were investigated. The polymerizations proceeded in a controlled way, the first‐order kinetics evolved in a linear fashion with time, the molecular weights increased linearly with the conversions, and the polydispersities were very narrow (~1.1). A poly[(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polystyrene] block copolymer was prepared (number‐average molecular weight = 42,600, polydispersity index = 1.21) from a poly(methyl methacrylate) macro‐RAFT agent. These new RAFT agents also showed excellent control over the radical polymerization of styrenics and acrylates. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New graft copolymers of β‐pinene with methyl methacrylate (MMA) or butyl acrylate (BA) were synthesized by the combination of living cationic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). β‐Pinene polymers with predetermined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs) were prepared by living cationic polymerization with the 1‐phenylethyl chloride/TiCl4/Ti(OiPr)4/nBu4NCl initiating system, and the resultant polymers were brominated quantitatively by N‐bromosuccinamide in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile, yielding poly(β‐pinene) macroinitiators with different bromine contents (Br/β‐pinene unit molar ratio = 1.0 and 0.5 for macroinitiators a and b , respectively). The macroinitiators, in conjunction with CuBr and 2,2′‐bipyridine, were used to initiate ATRP of BA or MMA. With macroinitiator a or b , the bulk polymerization of BA induced a linear first‐order kinetic plot and gave graft copolymers with controlled molecular weights and MWDs; this indicated the living nature of these polymerizations. The bulk polymerization of MMA initiated with macroinitiator a was completed instantaneously and induced insoluble gel products. However, the controlled polymerization of MMA was achieved with macroinitiator b in toluene and resulted in the desired graft copolymers with controlled molecular weights and MWDs. The structures of the obtained graft copolymers of β‐pinene with (methyl)methacrylate were confirmed by 1H NMR spectra. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of 2‐naphthyl acrylate (2NA) initiated by 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile were investigated with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl 1‐dithionaphthalate (CPDN) as a RAFT agent at various temperatures in a benzene solution. The results of the polymerizations showed that 2NA could be polymerized in a controlled way by RAFT polymerization with CPDN as a RAFT agent; the polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration, and the molecular weight increased linearly with the monomer conversion. The polydispersities of the polymer were relatively low up to high conversions in all cases. The chain‐extension reactions of poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate) (P2NA) with methyl methacrylate and styrene successfully yielded poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate)‐b‐polystyrene block polymers, respectively, with narrow polydispersities. The P2NA obtained by RAFT polymerization had a strong ultraviolet absorption at 270 nm, and the molecular weights had no apparent effect on the ultraviolet absorption intensities; however, the fluorescence intensity of P2NA increased as the molecular weight increased and was higher than that of 2NA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the nature of initiator and solvent in atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using N‐pentyl‐2‐pyridylmethanimine as the ligand in the presence of Cu(I)Br has been investigated. Under identical concentration and temperature conditions, p‐toluenesulfonyl chloride (p‐TsCl) in diphenyl ether gives polymerization rates identical to ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate in xylene. However, the former system induces better control of molecular weights and lower polydispersities.  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization with activators generated by electron transfer initiating/catalytic system (AGET ATRP) of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was carried out in inverse miniemulsion. Water‐soluble ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and mono‐ and difunctional poly(ethylene oxide)‐based bromoisobutyrate (PEO‐Br) as a macroinitiator were used in the presence of CuBr2/tris[(2‐pyridyl)methyl]amine (TPMA) and CuCl2/TPMA complexes. The use of poly(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) as a polymer surfactant resulted in the formation of stable HEMA cyclohexane inverse dispersion and PHEMA colloidal particles. All polymerizations were well‐controlled, allowing for the preparation of well‐defined PEO‐PHEMA and PHEMA‐PEO‐PHEMA block copolymers with relatively high molecular weight (DP > 200) and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 1.3). These block copolymers self‐assembled to form micellar nanoparticles being 10–20 nm in diameter with uniform size distribution, and aggregation number of ~10 confirmed by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization behavior of cyclohexyl methacrylate and trimethylsilyloxyethyl methacrylate with the catalytic system Cp2ZrMe2/B(C6F5)3/ZnEt2 was examined. Block copolymers of these bulky methacrylates with methyl methacrylate (MMA), having high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions, were prepared. n‐Butyl acrylate and tert‐butyl acrylate were polymerized with various catalytic systems based on zirconocene complexes. These polymerizations seemed to proceed to a nonquantitative yield, producing polymers with high molecular weights and relatively low polydispersities. This behavior indicated the presence of termination reactions in the initiation step, which appeared to be faster than the propagation step. Block copolymers of these acrylates with MMA were synthesized with the catalytic system rac‐Et(Ind)2ZrMe2/[B(C6F5)4][Me2NHPh]+/ZnEt2, starting from the polymerization of MMA. The block copolymers produced were well defined in most cases, as indicated by size exclusion chromatography, NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel rod–coil diblock copolymers on the basis of mesogen‐jacketed liquid‐crystalline polymer were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization from the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) macroinitiator. The hybrid diblock copolymers, poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene}‐block‐polydimethylsiloxane, had number‐average molecular weights (Mn's) ranging from 9500 to 30,900 and relatively narrow polydispersities (≤1.34). The polymerization proceeded with first‐order kinetics. Data from differential scanning calorimetry validated the microphase separation of the diblock copolymers. All block copolymers exhibited thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behavior except for the one with Mn being 9500. Four liquid‐crystalline diblock copolymers with PDMS weight fractions of more than 18% had two distinctive glass‐transition temperatures. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N‐Bromosuccinimide (NBS) was used as a thermal iniferter for the initiation of the bulk polymerizations of methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, and styrene. The polymerizations showed the characteristics of a living polymerization: both the yields and the molecular weights of the resultant polymers increased linearly as the reaction time increased. The molecular weight distributions of the polymers were 1.42–1.95 under the studied conditions. The resultant polymers could be used as macroiniferters to reinitiate the polymerization of the second monomer. The copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐polystyrene and polystyrene‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) were obtained and characterized. End‐group analysis of the resultant poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(methyl acrylate), and polystyrene confirmed that NBS behaved as a thermal iniferter. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The incorporation of metal–ligand interactions into macromolecules imparts to them unique and potentially useful properties. We report the synthesis of homo, block, and statistical copolymers with controlled molecular weights, compositions, and relatively narrow polydispersities via atom transfer radical polymerization that contain activated esters for the subsequent incorporation of terpyridine. This approach is universal and allows facile access to macromolecules with rich chemical functions, illustrated here with metal ligands. Comonomers include methyl, n‐butyl, and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate as well as styrene. The addition of lanthanide ions to the final copolymers generates emissive materials with blue, green, red, or purple light, depending on the metal used. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyethylene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PE‐b‐PMMA) was successfully synthesized through the combination of metallocene catalysis with living radical polymerization. Terminally hydroxylated polyethylene, prepared by ethylene/allyl alcohol copolymerization with a specific zirconium metallocene/methylaluminoxane/triethylaluminum catalyst system, was treated with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce terminally esterified polyethylene (PE‐Br). With the resulting PE‐Br as an initiator for transition‐metal‐mediated living radical polymerization, methyl methacrylate polymerization was subsequently performed with CuBr or RuCl2(PPh3)3 as a catalyst. Then, PE‐b‐PMMA block copolymers of different poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) contents were prepared. Transmission electron microscopy of the obtained block copolymers revealed unique morphological features that depended on the content of the PMMA segment. The block copolymer possessing 75 wt % PMMA contained 50–100‐nm spherical polyethylene lamellae uniformly dispersed in the PMMA matrix. Moreover, the PE‐b‐PMMA block copolymers effectively compatibilized homopolyethylene and homo‐PMMA at a nanometer level. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Optically active homopolymers and copolymers, bearing chiral units at the side chain and end chain, were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) techniques. The well‐defined optically active polymers were obtained via the ATRP of pregnenolone methacrylate (PR‐MA), β‐cholestanol acrylate (CH‐A), and 20‐(hydroxymethyl)‐pregna‐1,4‐dien‐3‐one acrylate (HPD‐A) with ethyl 2‐bromopropionate as the initiator and CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system. The experimental results showed that the polymerizations of PR‐MA, CH‐A, and HPD‐A proceeded in a living fashion, providing pendent chiral group polymers with low molecular weight distributions and predetermined molecular weights that increased linearly with the monomer conversion. Furthermore, the copolymers poly(pregnenolone methacrylate)‐b‐poly[(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] and poly(pregnenolone methacrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate) were synthesized and characterized with 1H NMR, transmission electron microscopy, and polarimetric analysis. In addition, when optically active initiators estrone 2‐bromopropionate and 20‐(hydroxymethyl)‐pregna‐1,4‐dien‐3‐one 2‐bromopropionate were used for ATRPs of methyl methacrylate and styrene, terminal optically active poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene were obtained. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) were combined to synthesize poly(?‐caprolactone‐co‐octadecyl methacrylate‐co‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) copolymers possessing a triblock or random block structure. Various synthetic pathways (sequential or simultaneous approaches) were investigated for the synthesis of both copolymers. For the preparation of these copolymers, an initiator with dual functionality for ATRP/anionic ring‐opening polymerization, 2‐hydroxyethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate, was used. Copolymers were prepared with good structural control and low polydispersities (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), but one limitation was identified: the dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) block had to be synthesized after the ?‐caprolactone block. ROP could not proceed in the presence of DMAEMA because the complexation of the amine groups in poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) deactivated tin(II) hexanoate, which was used as a catalyst for ROP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymers poly[(2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate] (PDMDMA) and four‐armed PDMDMA with well‐defined structures were prepared by the polymerization of (2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate (DMDMA) in the presence of an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator system. The successive hydrolyses of the polymers obtained produced the corresponding water‐soluble polymers poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl acrylate) (PDHPA) and four‐armed PDHPA. The controllable features for the ATRP of DMDMA were studied with kinetic measurements, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and NMR data. With the macroinitiators PDMDMA–Br and four‐armed PDMDMA–Br in combination with CuBr and 2,2′‐bipyridine, the block polymerizations of methyl acrylate (MA) with PDMDMA were carried out to afford the AB diblock copolymer PDMDMA‐b‐MA and the four‐armed block copolymer S{poly[(2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate]‐block‐poly(methyl acrylate)}4, respectively. The block copolymers were hydrolyzed in an acidic aqueous solution, and the amphiphilic diblock and four‐armed block copolymers poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl acrylate) were prepared successfully. The structures of these block copolymers were verified with NMR and GPC measurements. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3062–3072, 2001  相似文献

In this article, the synthesis and self‐assembly of a novel well‐defined biocompatible amphiphilic POEGMA‐PDMS‐POEGMA triblock copolymer were studied. The copolymer was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) using α,ω‐dibromo polydimethylsiloxane macroinitiator (Br‐PDMS‐Br). Br‐PDMS‐Br was synthesized through the esterification of α,ω‐hydroxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The structures of the copolymers were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The copolymers showed reversible aggregation in response to temperature cycles with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 61 and 66 °C, as determined by ultraviolet‐visible spectrophotometry and dynamic light scattering. The LCST values increased in proportion to the length of the hydrophilic block and were lower than that of the POEGMA homopolymer. The self‐assembly behavior of the copolymers in aqueous solution was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The critical micelle concentration value (1.08–0.26 10?6 mol L?1) decreased as the length of the POEGMA chain increased. The POEGMA‐PDMS‐POEGMA copolymers can easily self‐assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solution. Such biocompatible block copolymers may be attractive candidates as ‘‘smart'' thermo‐responsive drug delivery systems. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Polymer–silicate nanocomposites were synthesized with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). An ATRP initiator, consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt moiety and a 2‐bromo‐2‐methyl propionate moiety, was intercalated into the interlayer spacings of the layered silicate. Subsequent ATRP of styrene, methyl methacrylate, or n‐butyl acrylate with Cu(I)X/N,N‐bis(2‐pyridiylmethyl) octadecylamine, Cu(I)X/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, or Cu(I)X/1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (X = Br or Cl) catalysts with the initiator‐modified silicate afforded homopolymers with predictable molecular weights and low polydispersities, both characteristics of living radical polymerization. The polystyrene nanocomposites contained both intercalated and exfoliated silicate structures, whereas the poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites were significantly exfoliated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out at room temperature (25 °C) under 60Co γ‐irradiation environment. The polymerization proceeded smoothly with high conversion (>90%) within 7 h. The polymerizations kept the features of controlled radical polymerization: first‐order kinetics, well‐predetermined number‐average molecular weights (Mn,GPC), and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25). 1H NMR spectroscope and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry confirmed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chain was end‐capped by the initiator moieties. The Cu(II) concentration could reduce to 20 ppm level while keeping good control over molecular weights. This is the first successful example for the ATRP of MMA under 60Co γ‐irradiation at room temperature. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

In this contribution, we reported a facile synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PMMA‐b‐PVPy) diblock copolymers via sequential radical polymerizations mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide (DIP). It was found that the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) mediated by DIP was in a controlled and living manner. In contrast, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate mediated by DIP displayed the behavior of telomerization, affording xanthate‐terminated PMMA with a good control of molecular weights while the conversion of monomer was not very high. The xanthate‐terminated PMMA can be successfully used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent for the polymerization of NVP via RAFT/MADIX process and thus PMMA‐b‐PVPy diblock copolymers can be successfully synthesized via sequential radical polymerization mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide. One of these diblock copolymers was incorporated into polybenzoxazine and the nanostructured thermosets were obtained as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, small angle X‐ray scattering, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The formation of nanostructures in polybenzoxazine thermosets was ascribed to a reaction‐induced microphase separation mechanism. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A series of side‐chain liquid‐crystalline (LC) homopolymers of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with different degrees of polymerization were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which were prepared with a wide range of number‐average molecular weights from 5.1 × 103 to 20.6 × 103 with narrow polydispersities of around 1.17. Thermal investigation showed that the homopolymers exhibit two mesophases, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase, and the phase‐transition temperatures of the homopolymers increase clearly with increasing molecular weights. A series of novel LC coil triblock copolymers with narrow polydispersities was synthesized by ATRP, and their thermotropic phase behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The LC coil triblocks were designed to have an LC conformation of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with a wide range of molecular weights from 3.5 × 103 to 1.7 × 104 and the coil conformation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (number‐average molecular weight: 6000 or 12,000) segment. Their characterization was investigated with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and gel permeation chromatography. Triblock copolymers exhibited a crystalline phase, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase. The phase‐transition temperatures from the smectic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased, and the crystallization of PEG depressed with increasing molecular weight of the LC block. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGEEMA) side chains were synthesized by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained comb copolymer was treated with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. Finally, PPEGMEA‐g‐PPEGEEMA graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate macromonomer using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.20). This kind of double hydrophilic copolymer was found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ion (0.3 M Cl? and SO). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
