A numerical study of a square jet in a cross flow is carried out at a Reynolds number of 100. The flow field and heat transfer characteristic downstream of the jet have been explored by solving three-dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equations and energy equation using higher order spatial and temporal discretization. The projection of vortical structure on a plane is seen to give the component of vortex normal to the plane. Four combinations of velocity profile namely (1) uniform crossflow and uniform jet, (2) laminar boundary layer crossflow and uniform jet, (3) uniform crossflow and parabolic jet profile, and (4) laminar boundary layer crossflow and parabolic jet are compared at same phase to see their effect on the flow field and heat transfer characteristic. All the four cases are seen to exhibit unsteadiness but the jet with parabolic profile is seen to show stronger unsteadiness. The instantaneous vortical structures of all the cases at the same phase show that the structures are more complex for the jet with parabolic velocity profile. The temperature field is seen to be correlated with the vortical structures. Comparison of the time averaged flow field reveals that the jet penetration is the highest for the jet having parabolic profile and boundary layer crossflow. The adiabatic effectiveness is observed to be more for the jet with uniform velocity profile and uniform crossflow and was least for the jet with parabolic velocity profile and boundary layer crossflow.  相似文献

The unsteady flow and heat transfer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the forward stagnation point region of a rotating sphere in the presence of a magnetic field are investigated in this study. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by the velocity at the edge of the boundary layer and the angular velocity of the rotating sphere, both varying continuously with time. The system of ordinary differential equations governing the flow is solved numerically. For some particular cases, an analytical solution is also obtained. It is found that the surface shear stresses in x- and y-directions and the surface heat transfer increase with the acceleration, the magnetic and the rotation parameters whether the magnetic field is fixed relative to the fluid or body, except that the surface shear stress in x-direction and the surface heat transfer decrease with increasing the magnetic parameter when the magnetic field is fixed relative to the body. For a certain value of the acceleration parameter, the surface shear stress in the x-direction vanishes while the surface shear stress in the y-direction and the surface heat transfer remain finite. Also, below a certain value of the acceleration parameter, reverse flow occurs in the x-component of the velocity profile. Received on 18 May 1998  相似文献

Numerical simulations of heat transfer in non-isothermal particulate flows are important to better understand the flow pattern. The complexity of numerical algorithms coupling the heat and mass transfer and the considerable computational resources required limit the number of such direct simulations that can be reasonably performed. We suggest a Distributed Lagrange Multiplier/Fictitious Domain (DLM/FD) method to compute the temperature distribution and the heat exchange between the fluid and solid phases. The Boussinesq approximation is considered for the flow/temperature fields coupling. We employ a Finite Element Method (FEM) to solve the fluid flow conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy. The motion of particles is computed by a Discrete Element Method (DEM). On each particle, heat transfer is solved using a FEM. For each class of particles, we generate a single FEM grid and translate/rotate it at each time step to match the physical configuration of each particle. Distributed Lagrange multipliers for both the velocity and temperature fields are introduced to treat the fluid/solid interaction. This work is an extension of the method we proposed in Yu et al. (2006). Two two-dimensional (2D) test cases are proposed to validate the implementation by comparing our computational results with those reported in the literature. Finally, the sedimentation of a single sphere in a semi-infinite channel is presented and the results are discussed.  相似文献

An analysis of free convection heat transfer in electrically conducting power law non-Newtonian fluid over a thin axisymmetric body of constant temperature is carried out. The uniform external magnetic field acts normally to the surface through the induced boundary layer. In view of the fact that most of the non-Newtonian fluids have large Prandtl number, the momentum equation is simplified. The equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy which govern and describe the flow and heat transfer are solved numerically. The effect of the magnetic field on the velocity, temperature, the coefficient of friction and the Nusselt number are investigated. Numerical results are tabulated, presented graphically and discussed.  相似文献

The unsteady laminar incompressible mixed convection flow over a two-dimensional body (cylinder) and an axisymmetric body (sphere) has been studied when the buboyancy forces arise from both thermal and mass diffusion and the unsteadiness in the flow field is introduced by the time dependent free stream velocity. The nonlinear partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. The results indicate that for the thermally assisting flow the local skin friction, heat transfer and mass diffusion are enhanced when the buoyancy force from mass diffusion assists the thermal buoyancy force. But this trend is opposite for the thermally opposing flow. The point of zero skin friction moves upstream due to unsteadiness. No singularity is observed at the point of zero skin friction for unsteady flow unlike steady flow. The flow reversal is observed after a certain instant of time. The velocity overshoot occurs for assisting flows.  相似文献

Linear axisymmetric Stokes flow over a porous spherical particle is investigated. An exact analytic solution for the fluid velocity components and the pressure inside and outside the porous particle is obtained. The solution is generalized to include the cases of arbitrary three-dimensional linear shear flow as well as translational-shear Stokes flow. As the permeability of the particle tends to zero, the solutions obtained go over into the corresponding solutions for an impermeable particle. The problem of translational Stokes flow around a spherical drop (in the limit a gas bubble or an impermeable sphere) was considered, for example, in [1,2]. A solution of the problem of translational Stokes flow over a porous spherical particle was given in [3]. Linear shear-strain Stokes flow over a spherical drop was investigated in [2].Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, pp. 113–120, May–June, 1995.  相似文献

A study is made of the influence of a homogeneous magnetic field on the mass transfer for a spherical solid particle and a liquid drop in a flow of a viscous electrically conducting fluid. The previously obtained [1] velocity field of the fluid is used to calculate the concentration distribution in the diffusion boundary layer, the density of the diffusion flux, and the Nusselt number, which characterizes the mass transfer between the particle and the surrounding medium.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 189–192, January–February, 1980.  相似文献

This paper discusses the radiative transfer effects of an axisymmetric gas-particles jet into a cylindrical pipe. The medium is gray and it participates to radiation by emission, absorption and scattering. The two-phase flow problem is solved numerically by the finite volume method. We investigate the radiative transfer through a sensitivity analysis which considers the effects of the particle radiative properties and the particle number density on the temperature field and on the radiative heat fluxes of the two-phase flow domain. Analysis of the temperature profile in the cylinder, without and then with particle radiation effects, shows a decrease in the medium temperatures and thus an important role of the radiative transfer. These results also show that the presence of scattering makes the medium temperature more uniform. Finally, analysis of the particle number density, through the variation of the injection velocity, shows that a decrease in the injection velocity decreases the temperatures of the gas and particles and rapidly equilibrates the gas and particle temperatures.  相似文献

The unsteady laminar free convection boundary layer flows around two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies placed in an ambient fluid of infinite extent have been studied when the flow is driven by thermal buoyancy forces and buoyancy forces from species diffusion. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by both temperature and concentration at the wall which vary arbitrarily with time. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. Computations have been performed for a circular cylinder and a sphere. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are strongly dependent on the variation of the wall temperature and concentration with time. Also the skin friction and heat transfer increase or decrease as the buoyancy forces from species diffusion assist and oppose, respectively, the thermal buoyancy force, whereas the mass transfer rate is higher for small values of the ratio of the buoyancy parameters than for large values. The local heat and mass transfer rates are maximum at the stagnation point and they decrease progressively with increase of the angular position from the stagnation point.  相似文献

A numerical study is carried out for the axisymmetric steady laminar incompressible flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid between two infinite parallel porous disks with the constant uniform injection through the surface of the disks. The fluid is subjected to an external transverse magnetic field. The governing nonlinear equations of motion are transformed into a dimensionless form through von Karman’s similarity transformation. An algorithm based on a finite difference scheme is used to solve the reduced coupled ordinary differential equations under associated boundary conditions. The effects of the Reynolds number, the magnetic parameter, the micropolar parameter, and the Prandtl number on the flow velocity and temperature distributions are discussed. The results agree well with those of the previously published work for special cases. The investigation predicts that the heat transfer rate at the surfaces of the disks increases with the increases in the Reynolds number, the magnetic parameter, and the Prandtl number. The shear stresses decrease with the increase in the injection while increase with the increase in the applied magnetic field. The shear stress factor is lower for micropolar fluids than for Newtonian fluids, which may be beneficial in the flow and thermal control in the polymeric processing.  相似文献

In the present paper the unsteady Couette flow and heat transfer of a dusty conducting fluid between two parallel plates with temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity are studied. A constant pressure gradient and an external uniform magnetic field are applied. The governing coupled momentum and energy equations are solved numerically using finite differences. The effect of the variable viscosity and thermal conductivity of the fluid and the uniform magnetic field on the velocity and temperature fields for both the fluid and dust particles is discussed.  相似文献

This paper discusses the effect of thermophoretic particle deposition on the transient natural convection laminar flow along a vertical flat surface, which is immersed in an optically dense gray fluid in the presence of thermal radiation. In the analysis, the radiative heat flux term is expressed by adopting the Rosseland diffusion approximation. The governing equations are reduced to a set of parabolic partial differential equations. Then, these equations are solved numerically with a finite-difference scheme in the entire time regime. The asymptotic solutions are also obtained for sufficiently small and large time. The obtained asymptotic solutions are then compared with the numerical solutions, and they are found in excellent agreement. Moreover, the effects of different physical parameters,i.e.,the thermal radiation parameter, the surface temperature parameter, and the thermophoretic parameter,on the transient surface shear stress, the rate of surface heat transfer, and the rate of species concentration,as well as the transient velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles are shown graphically for a fluid(i.e.,air) with the Prandtl number of 0.7 at 20 C and 1.013 × 10 5 Pa.  相似文献

Summary  The nonsimilar boundary-layer flow and heat transfer over a stationary permeable surface in a rotating fluid in the presence of magnetic field, mass transfer and free stream velocity are studied. The parabolic partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically by using a difference–differential method. For small streamwise distance, these partial differential equations are also solved by a perturbation technique with Shanks transformation. For uniform mass transfer, analytical solutions are obtained. The surface skin friction coefficients and the Nusselt number increase with the magnetic field, suction and streamwise distance from the leading edge of the plate except the skin friction coefficient in the y-direction which decreases with the increasing magnetic field. This paper investigates the effect of radiation on the forced and free convection flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along a heated vertical flat plate with uniform free stream and uniform surface temperature with Rosseland diffusion approximation. With appropriate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to local nonsimilarity equations valid in the forced convection regime as well as in the free convection regime. A group of transformation is, also, introduced to reduce the boundary layer equations to a set of local nonsimilarity equations valid in both the forced and free convection regimes. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained by employing the implicit finite difference methods together with Keller box scheme and are expressed in terms of local shear stress and local rate of heat transfer for a range of values of the pertinent parameters.  相似文献

In this study a model which was developed previously is used to theoretically investigate the steady flow of a particulate suspension into two-dimensional horizontal and inclined channels. The continuity equation for the fluid and the simplified two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are then solved together with a particle concentration equation. This latter equation is formulated by considering the balance between the particle flux due to gravity with the corresponding particle fluxes due to convection and shear-induced diffusion. The resulting coupled system of equations is solved numerically using a specialised finite-difference method. It is found, for the parameter range for flows of proppants in hydraulic fractures, that when the suspension enters the channel with a uniform velocity profile it almost instantaneously becomes parabolic. In addition, the effects of particle sedimentation are most dominant in the entrance region, but further downstream such effects are balanced as shear-induced particle diffusion becomes more important. It is also shown that the suspension flow depends critically on the choice of the parameters used, e.g. the ratio of the particle radius to the height of the channel.  相似文献

A combined analytical–numerical study for the creeping flow caused by a spherical fluid or solid particle with a slip-flow surface translating in a viscous fluid along the centerline of a circular cylindrical pore is presented. To solve the axisymmetric Stokes equations for the fluid velocity field, a general solution is constructed from the superposition of the fundamental solutions in both cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems. The boundary conditions are enforced first at the pore wall by the Fourier transforms and then on the particle surface by a collocation technique. Numerical results for the hydrodynamic drag force acting on the particle are obtained with good convergence for various values of the relative viscosity or slip coefficient of the particle, the slip parameter of the pore wall, and the ratio of radii of the particle and pore. For the motion of a fluid sphere along the axis of a cylindrical pore, our drag results are in good agreement with the available solutions in the literature. As expected, the boundary-corrected drag force for all cases is a monotonic increasing function of the ratio of particle-to-pore radii, and approaches infinity in the limit. Except for the case that the cylindrical pore is hardly slip and the value of the ratio of particle-to-pore radii is close to unity, the drag force exerted on the particle increases monotonically with an increase in its relative viscosity or with a decrease in its slip coefficient for a constant ratio of radii. In a comparison for the pore shape effect on the axial translation of a slip sphere, it is found that the particle in a circular cylindrical pore in general acquires a lower hydrodynamic drag than in a spherical cavity, but this trend can be reversed for the case of highly slippery particles and pore walls.  相似文献

An analysis is performed to present a new self-similar solution of unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow in the forward stagnation point region of a rotating sphere where the free stream velocity and the angular velocity of the rotating sphere vary continuously with time. It is shown that a self-similar solution is possible when the free stream velocity varies inversely with time. Both constant wall temperature and constant heat flux conditions have been considered in the present study. The system of ordinary differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite difference scheme in combination with a quasilinearization technique. It is observed that the surface shear stresses and the surface heat transfer parameters increase with the acceleration and rotation parameters. For a certain value of the acceleration parameter, the surface shear stress in x-direction vanishes and due to further reduction in the value of the acceleration parameter, reverse flow occurs in the x–component of the velocity profiles. The effect of buoyancy parameter is to increase the surface heat transfer rate for buoyancy assisting flow and to decrease it for buoyancy opposing flow. For a fixed buoyancy force, heating by constant heat flux yields a higher value of surface heat transfer rate than heating by constant wall temperature.  相似文献

A numerical study is performed to analyse heat and mass transfer phenomena due to natural convection in a composite cavity containing a fluid layer overlying a porous layer saturated with the same fluid. The flow in the porous region is modelled using Brinkman–Forchheimer-extended Darcy model that includes both the effect of macroscopic shear (Brinkman effect) and flow inertia (Forchheimer effect). The vertical walls of the two-dimensional enclosure are isothermal whilst the horizontal walls are adiabatic. The two regions are coupled by equating the velocity and stress components at the interface. The resulting coupled equations in non-dimensional form are solved by an alternating direction implicit method by transforming them into parabolic form by the addition of false transient terms. The numerical results show that the amount of fluid penetration into the porous layer depends strongly upon the Darcy, thermal and solutal Rayleigh numbers. Average Nusselt number decreases while average Sherwood number increases with an increase of the Lewis number. The transfer of heat and mass on the heated wall near the interface depends strongly on the Darcy number. Received on 11 May 1998  相似文献
