Simultaneous generalized hill climbing (SGHC) algorithms provide a framework for using heuristics to simultaneously address sets of intractable discrete optimization problems where information is shared between the problems during the algorithm execution. Many well-known heuristics can be embedded within the SGHC algorithm framework. This paper shows that the solutions generated by an SGHC algorithm are a stochastic process that satisfies the Markov property. This allows problem probability mass functions to be formulated for particular sets of problems based on the long-term behavior of the algorithm. Such results can be used to determine the proportion of iterations that an SGHC algorithm will spend optimizing over each discrete optimization problem. Sufficient conditions that guarantee that the algorithm spends an equal number of iterations in each discrete optimization problem are provided. SGHC algorithms can also be formulated such that the overall performance of the algorithm is independent of the initial discrete optimization problem chosen. Sufficient conditions are obtained guaranteeing that an SGHC algorithm will visit the globally optimal solution for each discrete optimization problem. Lastly, rates of convergence for SGHC algorithms are reported that show that given a rate of convergence for the embedded GHC algorithm, the SGHC algorithm can be designed to preserve this rate.  相似文献

In this article, the vector exact l1 penalty function method used for solving nonconvex nondifferentiable multiobjective programming problems is analyzed. In this method, the vector penalized optimization problem with the vector exact l1 penalty function is defined. Conditions are given guaranteeing the equivalence of the sets of (weak) Pareto optimal solutions of the considered nondifferentiable multiobjective programming problem and of the associated vector penalized optimization problem with the vector exact l1 penalty function. This equivalence is established for nondifferentiable invex vector optimization problems. Some examples of vector optimization problems are presented to illustrate the results established in the article.  相似文献

Multiple objective combinatorial optimization problems are difficult to solve and often, exact algorithms are unable to produce optimal solutions. The development of multiple objective heuristics was inspired by the need to quickly produce acceptable solutions. In this paper, we present a new multiple objective Pareto memetic algorithm called PMSMO. The PMSMO algorithm incorporates an enhanced fine-grained fitness assignment, a double level archiving process and a local search procedure to improve performance. The performance of PMSMO is benchmarked against state-of-the-art algorithms using 0–1 multi-dimensional multiple objective knapsack problem from the literature and an industrial scheduling problem from the aluminum industry.  相似文献

We introduce a heuristic for the Multi-Resource Generalized Assignment Problem (MRGAP) based on the concepts of Very Large-Scale Neighborhood Search and Variable Neighborhood Search. The heuristic is a simplified version of the Very Large-Scale Variable Neighborhood Search for the Generalized Assignment Problem. Our algorithm can be viewed as a k-exchange heuristic; but unlike traditional k-exchange algorithms, we choose larger values of k resulting in neighborhoods of very large size with high probability. Searching this large neighborhood (approximately) amounts to solving a sequence of smaller MRGAPs either by exact algorithms or by heuristics. Computational results on benchmark test problems are presented. We obtained improved solutions for many instances compared to some of the best known heuristics for the MRGAP within reasonable running time. The central idea of our heuristic can be used to develop efficient heuristics for other hard combinatorial optimization problems as well.  相似文献

Integrated Preference Functional (IPF) is a set functional that, given a discrete set of points for a multiple objective optimization problem, assigns a numerical value to that point set. This value provides a quantitative measure for comparing different sets of points generated by solution procedures for difficult multiple objective optimization problems. We introduced the IPF for bi-criteria optimization problems in [Carlyle, W.M., Fowler, J.W., Gel, E., Kim, B., 2003. Quantitative comparison of approximate solution sets for bi-criteria optimization problems. Decision Sciences 34 (1), 63–82]. As indicated in that paper, the computational effort to obtain IPF is negligible for bi-criteria problems. For three or more objective function cases, however, the exact calculation of IPF is computationally demanding, since this requires k (⩾3) dimensional integration. In this paper, we suggest a theoretical framework for obtaining IPF for k (⩾3) objectives. The exact method includes solving two main sub-problems: (1) finding the optimality region of weights for all potentially optimal points, and (2) computing volumes of k dimensional convex polytopes. Several different algorithms for both sub-problems can be found in the literature. We use existing methods from computational geometry (i.e., triangulation and convex hull algorithms) to develop a reasonable exact method for obtaining IPF. We have also experimented with a Monte Carlo approximation method and compared the results to those with the exact IPF method.  相似文献

This paper presents a framework for analyzing and comparing sub-optimal performance of local search algorithms for hard discrete optimization problems. The β-acceptable solution probability is introduced that captures how effectively an algorithm has performed to date and how effectively an algorithm can be expected to perform in the future. Using this probability, the necessary conditions for a local search algorithm to converge in probability to β-acceptable solutions are derived. To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of local search algorithms, two estimators for the expected number of iterations to visit a β-acceptable solution are obtained. Computational experiments are reported with simulated annealing and tabu search applied to four small traveling salesman problem instances, and the Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun algorithm applied to eight medium to large traveling salesman problem instances (all with known optimal solutions), to illustrate the application of these estimators.  相似文献

Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have become an increasingly popular tool for design and optimization tasks in real-world applications. Most of the popular baseline algorithms are pivoted on the use of Pareto-ranking (that is empirically inefficient) to improve the convergence to the Pareto front of a multi-objective optimization problem. This paper proposes a new ε-dominance MOEA (EDMOEA) which adopts pair-comparison selection and steady-state replacement instead of the Pareto-ranking. The proposed algorithm is an elitist algorithm with a new preservation technique of population diversity based on the ε-dominance relation. It is demonstrated that superior results could be obtained by the EDMOEA compared with other algorithms: NSGA-II, SPEA2, IBEA, ε-MOEA, PESA and PESA-II on test problems. The EDMOEA is able to converge to the Pareto optimal set much faster especially on the ZDT test functions with a large number of decision variables.  相似文献

A Post-Optimality Analysis Algorithm for Multi-Objective Optimization   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Algorithms for multi-objective optimization problems are designed to generate a single Pareto optimum (non-dominated solution) or a set of Pareto optima that reflect the preferences of the decision-maker. If a set of Pareto optima are generated, then it is useful for the decision-maker to be able to obtain a small set of preferred Pareto optima using an unbiased technique of filtering solutions. This suggests the need for an efficient selection procedure to identify such a preferred subset that reflects the preferences of the decision-maker with respect to the objective functions. Selection procedures typically use a value function or a scalarizing function to express preferences among objective functions. This paper introduces and analyzes the Greedy Reduction (GR) algorithm for obtaining subsets of Pareto optima from large solution sets in multi-objective optimization. Selection of these subsets is based on maximizing a scalarizing function of the vector of percentile ordinal rankings of the Pareto optima within the larger set. A proof of optimality of the GR algorithm that relies on the non-dominated property of the vector of percentile ordinal rankings is provided. The GR algorithm executes in linear time in the worst case. The GR algorithm is illustrated on sets of Pareto optima obtained from five interactive methods for multi-objective optimization and three non-linear multi-objective test problems. These results suggest that the GR algorithm provides an efficient way to identify subsets of preferred Pareto optima from larger sets.  相似文献

We consider bi-criteria optimization problems for decision rules and rule systems relative to length and coverage. We study decision tables with many-valued decisions in which each row is associated with a set of decisions as well as single-valued decisions where each row has a single decision. Short rules are more understandable; rules covering more rows are more general. Both of these problems—minimization of length and maximization of coverage of rules are NP-hard. We create dynamic programming algorithms which can find the minimum length and the maximum coverage of rules, and can construct the set of Pareto optimal points for the corresponding bi-criteria optimization problem. This approach is applicable for medium-sized decision tables. However, the considered approach allows us to evaluate the quality of various heuristics for decision rule construction which are applicable for relatively big datasets. We can evaluate these heuristics from the point of view of (i) single-criterion—we can compare the length or coverage of rules constructed by heuristics; and (ii) bi-criteria—we can measure the distance of a point (length, coverage) corresponding to a heuristic from the set of Pareto optimal points. The presented results show that the best heuristics from the point of view of bi-criteria optimization are not always the best ones from the point of view of single-criterion optimization.  相似文献

A new approach to derive Pareto front approximations with evolutionary computations is proposed here. At present, evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithms derive a discrete approximation of the Pareto front (the set of objective maps of efficient solutions) by selecting feasible solutions such that their objective maps are close to the Pareto front. However, accuracy of such approximations is known only if the Pareto front is known, which makes their usefulness questionable. Here we propose to exploit also elements outside feasible sets to derive pairs of such Pareto front approximations that for each approximation pair the corresponding Pareto front lies, in a certain sense, in-between. Accuracies of Pareto front approximations by such pairs can be measured and controlled with respect to distance between elements of a pair. A rudimentary algorithm to derive pairs of Pareto front approximations is presented and the viability of the idea is verified on a limited number of test problems.  相似文献

The problem of computing Pareto optimal solutions with distributed algorithms is considered inn-player games. We shall first formulate a new geometric problem for finding Pareto solutions. It involves solving joint tangents for the players' objective functions. This problem can then be solved with distributed iterative methods, and two such methods are presented. The principal results are related to the analysis of the geometric problem. We give conditions under which its solutions are Pareto optimal, characterize the solutions, and prove an existence theorem. There are two important reasons for the interest in distributed algorithms. First, they can carry computational advantages over centralized schemes. Second, they can be used in situations where the players do not know each others' objective functions.  相似文献

In most multi-objective optimization problems we aim at selecting the most preferred among the generated Pareto optimal solutions (a subjective selection among objectively determined solutions). In this paper we consider the robustness of the selected Pareto optimal solution in relation to perturbations within weights of the objective functions. For this task we design an integrated approach that can be used in multi-objective discrete and continuous problems using a combination of Monte Carlo simulation and optimization. In the proposed method we introduce measures of robustness for Pareto optimal solutions. In this way we can compare them according to their robustness, introducing one more characteristic for the Pareto optimal solution quality. In addition, especially in multi-objective discrete problems, we can detect the most robust Pareto optimal solution among neighboring ones. A computational experiment is designed in order to illustrate the method and its advantages. It is noteworthy that the Augmented Weighted Tchebycheff proved to be much more reliable than the conventional weighted sum method in discrete problems, due to the existence of unsupported Pareto optimal solutions.  相似文献

In this paper, we solve instances of the multiobjective multiconstraint (or multidimensional) knapsack problem (MOMCKP) from the literature, with three objective functions and three constraints. We use exact as well as approximate algorithms. The exact algorithm is a properly modified version of the multicriteria branch and bound (MCBB) algorithm, which is further customized by suitable heuristics. Three branching heuristics and a more general purpose composite branching and construction heuristic are devised. Comparison is made to the published results from another exact algorithm, the adaptive ε-constraint method [Laumanns, M., Thiele, L., Zitzler, E., 2006. An efficient, adaptive parameter variation scheme for Metaheuristics based on the epsilon-constraint method. European Journal of Operational Research 169, 932–942], using the same data sets. Furthermore, the same problems are solved using standard multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEA), namely, the SPEA2 and the NSGAII. The results from the exact case show that the branching heuristics greatly improve the performance of the MCBB algorithm, which becomes faster than the adaptive ε -constraint. Regarding the performance of the MOEA algorithms in the specific problems, SPEA2 outperforms NSGAII in the degree of approximation of the Pareto front, as measured by the coverage metric (especially for the largest instance).  相似文献

A drawback to using local search algorithms to address NP-hard discrete optimization problems is that many neighborhood functions have an exponential number of local optima that are not global optima (termed L-locals). A neighborhood function η is said to be stable if the number of L-locals is polynomial. A stable neighborhood function ensures that the number of L-locals does not grow too large as the instance size increases and results in improved performance for many local search algorithms. This paper studies the complexity of stable neighborhood functions for NP-hard discrete optimization problems by introducing neighborhood transformations. Neighborhood transformations between discrete optimization problems consist of a transformation of problem instances and a corresponding transformation of solutions that preserves the ordering imposed by the objective function values. In this paper, MAX Weighted Boolean SAT (MWBS), MAX Clause Weighted SAT (MCWS), and Zero-One Integer Programming (ZOIP) are shown to be NPO-complete with respect to neighborhood transformations. Therefore, if MWBS, MCWS, or ZOIP has a stable neighborhood function, then every problem in NPO has a stable neighborhood function. These results demonstrate the difficulty of finding effective neighborhood functions for NP-hard discrete optimization problems. This research is supported in part by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (F49620-01-1-0007, FA9550-04-1-0110).  相似文献

Experimental Evaluation of Heuristic Optimization Algorithms: A Tutorial   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Heuristic optimization algorithms seek good feasible solutions to optimization problems in circumstances where the complexities of the problem or the limited time available for solution do not allow exact solution. Although worst case and probabilistic analysis of algorithms have produced insight on some classic models, most of the heuristics developed for large optimization problem must be evaluated empirically—by applying procedures to a collection of specific instances and comparing the observed solution quality and computational burden. This paper focuses on the methodological issues that must be confronted by researchers undertaking such experimental evaluations of heuristics, including experimental design, sources of test instances, measures of algorithmic performance, analysis of results, and presentation in papers and talks. The questions are difficult, and there are no clear right answers. We seek only to highlight the main issues, present alternative ways of addressing them under different circumstances, and caution about pitfalls to avoid.  相似文献

A survey of recent developments in multiobjective optimization   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Multiobjective Optimization (MO) has many applications in such fields as the Internet, finance, biomedicine, management science, game theory and engineering. However, solving MO problems is not an easy task. Searching for all Pareto optimal solutions is expensive and a time consuming process because there are usually exponentially large (or infinite) Pareto optimal solutions. Even for simple problems determining whether a point belongs to the Pareto set is -hard. In this paper, we discuss recent developments in MO. These include optimality conditions, applications, global optimization techniques, the new concept of epsilon Pareto optimal solution, and heuristics.  相似文献

The class of local elimination algorithms is considered that make it possible to obtain global information about solutions of a problem using local information. The general structure of local elimination algorithms is described that use neighborhoods of elements and the structural graph describing the problem structure; an elimination algorithm is also described. This class of algorithms includes local decomposition algorithms for discrete optimization problems, nonserial dynamic programming algorithms, bucket elimination algorithms, and tree decomposition algorithms. It is shown that local elimination algorithms can be used for solving optimization problems.  相似文献

The complete topology design problem of survivable mesh-based transport networks is to address simultaneously design of network topology, working path routing, and spare capacity allocation based on span-restoration. Each constituent problem in the complete design problem could be formulated as an Integer Programming (IP) and is proved to be NP\mathcal{NP} -hard. Due to a large amount of decision variables and constraints involved in the IP formulation, to solve the problem directly by exact algorithms (e.g. branch-and-bound) would be impractical if not impossible. In this paper, we present a two-level evolutionary approach to address the complete topology design problem. In the low-level, two parameterized greedy heuristics are developed to jointly construct feasible solutions (i.e., closed graph topologies satisfying all the mesh-based network survivable constraints) of the complete problem. Unlike existing “zoom-in”-based heuristics in which subsets of the constraints are considered, the proposed heuristics take all constraints into account. An estimation of distribution algorithm works on the top of the heuristics to tune the control parameters. As a result, optimal solution to the considered problem is more likely to be constructed from the heuristics with the optimal control parameters. The proposed algorithm is evaluated experimentally in comparison with the latest heuristics based on the IP software CPLEX, and the “zoom-in”-based approach on 28 test networks problems. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is more effective in finding high-quality topologies than the IP-based heuristic algorithm in 21 out of 28 test instances with much less computational costs, and performs significantly better than the “zoom-in”-based approach in 19 instances with the same computational costs.  相似文献

For hard optimization problems, it is difficult to design heuristic algorithms which exhibit uniformly superior performance for all problem instances. As a result it becomes necessary to tailor the algorithms based on the problem instance. In this paper, we introduce the use of a cooperative problem solving team of heuristics that evolves algorithms for a given problem instance. The efficacy of this method is examined by solving six difficult instances of a bicriteria sparse multiple knapsack problem. Results indicate that such tailored algorithms uniformly improve solutions as compared to using predesigned heuristic algorithms.  相似文献

In this paper, approximate solutions algorithms for discrete cost multicommodity network optimization problems are presented and compared. Firstly, extensions of classical greedy heuristics, based on link-rerouting and flow-rerouting heuristics, are presented in details. Secondly, a new approximate solution algorithm, which basically consists of a heuristic implementation of the exact Benders-type cutting plane generation method, is proposed. All these algorithms are extensively compared on randomly generated graphs up to 50 nodes and 90 links. It clearly appears that this new Benders-type approach is very promising since it produces the best heuristic solutions.  相似文献
