Let G be a simple graph. The point arboricity ρ(G) of G is defined as the minimum number of subsets in a partition of the point set of G so that each subset induces an acyclic subgraph. The list point arboricity ρ l (G) is the minimum k so that there is an acyclic L-coloring for any list assignment L of G which |L(v)| ≥ k. So ρ(G) ≤ ρ l (G) for any graph G. Xue and Wu proved that the list point arboricity of bipartite graphs can be arbitrarily large. As an analogue to the well-known theorem of Ohba for list chromatic number, we obtain ρ l (G + K n ) = ρ(G + K n ) for any fixed graph G when n is sufficiently large. As a consequence, if ρ(G) is close enough to half of the number of vertices in G, then ρ l (G) = ρ(G). Particularly, we determine that , where K 2(n) is the complete n-partite graph with each partite set containing exactly two vertices. We also conjecture that for a graph G with n vertices, if then ρ l (G) = ρ(G). Research supported by NSFC (No.10601044) and XJEDU2006S05.  相似文献

It is well known that every planar graph G is 2‐colorable in such a way that no 3‐cycle of G is monochromatic. In this paper, we prove that G has a 2‐coloring such that no cycle of length 3 or 4 is monochromatic. The complete graph K5 does not admit such a coloring. On the other hand, we extend the result to K5‐minor‐free graphs. There are planar graphs with the property that each of their 2‐colorings has a monochromatic cycle of length 3, 4, or 5. In this sense, our result is best possible. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 46: 25–38, 2004  相似文献

Improper choosability of planar graphs has been widely studied. In particular, ?krekovski investigated the smallest integer gk such that every planar graph of girth at least gk is k‐improper 2‐choosable. He proved [9] that 6 ≤ g1 ≤ 9; 5 ≤ g2 ≤ 7; 5 ≤ g3 ≤ 6; and ? k ≥ 4, gk = 5. In this article, we study the greatest real M(k, l) such that every graph of maximum average degree less than M(k, l) is k‐improper l‐choosable. We prove that if l ≥ 2 then . As a corollary, we deduce that g1 ≤ 8 and g2 ≤ 6, and we obtain new results for graphs of higher genus. We also provide an upper bound for M(k, l). This implies that for any fixed l, . © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 52: 181–199, 2006  相似文献

The linear arboricity la(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of linear forests that partition the edges of G. Akiyama, Exoo, and Harary conjectured that for any simple graph G with maximum degree Δ. The conjecture has been proved to be true for graphs having Δ = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10. Combining these results, we prove in the article that the conjecture is true for planar graphs having Δ(G) ≠ 7. Several related results assuming some conditions on the girth are obtained as well. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 31: 129–134, 1999  相似文献

We describe an algorithm for generating all k‐critical ‐free graphs, based on a method of Hoàng et al. (A graph G is k‐critical H‐free if G is H‐free, k‐chromatic, and every H‐free proper subgraph of G is ‐colorable). Using this algorithm, we prove that there are only finitely many 4‐critical ‐free graphs, for both and . We also show that there are only finitely many 4‐critical ‐free graphs. For each of these cases we also give the complete lists of critical graphs and vertex‐critical graphs. These results generalize previous work by Hell and Huang, and yield certifying algorithms for the 3‐colorability problem in the respective classes. In addition, we prove a number of characterizations for 4‐critical H‐free graphs when H is disconnected. Moreover, we prove that for every t, the class of 4‐critical planar ‐free graphs is finite. We also determine all 52 4‐critical planar P7‐free graphs. We also prove that every P11‐free graph of girth at least five is 3‐colorable, and show that this is best possible by determining the smallest 4‐chromatic P12‐free graph of girth at least five. Moreover, we show that every P14‐free graph of girth at least six and every P17‐free graph of girth at least seven is 3‐colorable. This strengthens results of Golovach et al.  相似文献

?iráň constructed infinite families of k‐crossing‐critical graphs for every k?3 and Kochol constructed such families of simple graphs for every k?2. Richter and Thomassen argued that, for any given k?1 and r?6, there are only finitely many simple k‐crossing‐critical graphs with minimum degree r. Salazar observed that the same argument implies such a conclusion for simple k‐crossing‐critical graphs of prescribed average degree r>6. He established the existence of infinite families of simple k‐crossing‐critical graphs with any prescribed rational average degree r∈[4, 6) for infinitely many k and asked about their existence for r∈(3, 4). The question was partially settled by Pinontoan and Richter, who answered it positively for $r\in(3\frac{1}{2},4)$. The present contribution uses two new constructions of crossing‐critical simple graphs along with the one developed by Pinontoan and Richter to unify these results and to answer Salazar's question by the following statement: there exist infinite families of simple k‐crossing‐critical graphs with any prescribed average degree r∈(3, 6), for any k greater than some lower bound Nr. Moreover, a universal lower bound NI on k applies for rational numbers in any closed interval I?(3, 6). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 65: 139–162, 2010  相似文献

The vertex arboricity va(G) of graph G is defined as the minimum of subsets in a partition of the vertex set of G so that each subset induces an acyclic subgraph and has been widely studied. We define the concept of circular vertex arboricity vac(G) of graph G, which is a natural generalization of vertex arboricity. We give some basic properties of circular vertex arboricity and study the circular vertex arboricity of planar graphs.  相似文献

In this note we prove that the game chromatic index χ g (G) of a graph G of arboricity k is at most Δ + 3k − 1. This improves a bound obtained by Cai and Zhu [J. Graph Theory 36 (2001), 144–155] for k-degenerate graphs. Tomasz Bartnicki: Research of the first author is supported by a PhD grant from Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education N201 2128 33. A function between graphs is k‐to‐1 if each point in the codomain has precisely k pre‐images in the domain. Given two graphs, G and H, and an integer k≥1, and considering G and H as subsets of ?3, there may or may not be a k‐to‐1 continuous function (i.e. a k‐to‐1 map in the usual topological sense) from G onto H. In this paper we consider graphs G and H whose order is of a different parity and determine the even and odd values of k for which there exists a k‐to‐1 map from G onto H. We first consider k‐to‐1 maps from K2r onto K2s+1 and prove that for 1≤rs, (r, s)≠(1, 1), there is a continuous k‐to‐1 map for k even if and only if k≥2s and for k odd if and only if k≥?s?o (where ?s?o indicates the next odd integer greater than or equal to s). We then consider k‐to‐1 maps from K2s+1 onto K2s. We show that for 1≤r<s, such a map exists for even values of k if and only if k≥2s. We also prove that whatever the values of r and s are, no such k‐to‐1 map exists for odd values of k. To conclude, we give all triples (n, k, m) for which there is a k‐to‐1 map from Kn onto Km in the case when nm. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 65: 35–60, 2010.  相似文献

Immersion is a containment relation on graphs that is weaker than topological minor. (Every topological minor of a graph is also its immersion.) The graphs that do not contain any of the Kuratowski graphs (K5 and K3, 3) as topological minors are exactly planar graphs. We give a structural characterization of graphs that exclude the Kuratowski graphs as immersions. We prove that they can be constructed from planar graphs that are subcubic or of branch‐width at most 10 by repetitively applying i‐edge‐sums, for . We also use this result to give a structural characterization of graphs that exclude K3, 3 as an immersion.  相似文献

The clique number of an undirected graph G is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of G and is a well‐known lower bound for the chromatic number of G. Every proper k‐coloring of G may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge‐preserving vertex mapping) of G to the complete graph of order k. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number coincide. However, the structure of oriented cliques is much less understood than in the undirected case. In this article, we study the structure of outerplanar and planar oriented cliques. We first provide a list of 11 graphs and prove that an outerplanar graph can be oriented as an oriented clique if and only if it contains one of these graphs as a spanning subgraph. Klostermeyer and MacGillivray conjectured that the order of a planar oriented clique is at most 15, which was later proved by Sen. We show that any planar oriented clique on 15 vertices must contain a particular oriented graph as a spanning subgraph, thus reproving the above conjecture. We also provide tight upper bounds for the order of planar oriented cliques of girth k for all .  相似文献

Suppose G is a graph, k is a non‐negative integer. We say G is k‐antimagic if there is an injection f: E→{1, 2, …, |E| + k} such that for any two distinct vertices u and v, . We say G is weighted‐k‐antimagic if for any vertex weight function w: V→?, there is an injection f: E→{1, 2, …, |E| + k} such that for any two distinct vertices u and v, . A well‐known conjecture asserts that every connected graph GK2 is 0‐antimagic. On the other hand, there are connected graphs GK2 which are not weighted‐1‐antimagic. It is unknown whether every connected graph GK2 is weighted‐2‐antimagic. In this paper, we prove that if G has a universal vertex, then G is weighted‐2‐antimagic. If G has a prime number of vertices and has a Hamiltonian path, then G is weighted‐1‐antimagic. We also prove that every connected graph GK2 on n vertices is weighted‐ ?3n/2?‐antimagic. Let la(G) be the invariant introduced by Colin de Verdière [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B., 74:121–146, 1998], which is defined as the smallest integer n≥0 such that G is isomorphic to a minor of Kn×T, where Kn is a complete graph on n vertices and where T is an arbitrary tree. In this paper, we give an alternative definition of la(G), which is more in terms of the tree‐width of a graph. We give the collection of minimal forbidden minors for the class of graphs G with la(G)≤k, for k=2, 3. We show how this work on la(G) can be used to get a forbidden minor characterization of the graphs with (G)≤3. Here, (G) is another graph parameter introduced in the above cited paper. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 41: 24–52, 2002  相似文献

It is proven that if G is a 3‐connected claw‐free graph which is also H1‐free (where H1 consists of two disjoint triangles connected by an edge), then G is hamiltonian‐connected. Also, examples will be described that determine a finite family of graphs such that if a 3‐connected graph being claw‐free and L‐free implies G is hamiltonian‐connected, then L . © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Let G be a planar graph and let g(G) and Δ(G) be its girth and maximum degree, respectively. We show that G has an edge‐partition into a forest and a subgraph H so that (i) Δ(H) ≤ 4 if g(G) ≥ 5; (ii) Δ(H) ≤ 2 if g(G) ≥ 7; (iii) Δ(H)≤ 1 if g(G) ≥ 11; (iv) Δ(H) ≤ 7 if G does not contain 4‐cycles (though it may contain 3‐cycles). These results are applied to find the following upper bounds for the game coloring number colg(G) of a planar graph G: (i) colg(G) ≤ 8 if g(G) ≥ 5; (ii) colg(G)≤ 6 if g(G) ≥ 7; (iii) colg(G) ≤ 5 if g(G) ≥ 11; (iv) colg(G) ≤ 11 if G does not contain 4‐cycles (though it may contain 3‐cycles). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The tree partition number of an r‐edge‐colored graph G, denoted by tr(G), is the minimum number k such that whenever the edges of G are colored with r colors, the vertices of G can be covered by at most k vertex‐disjoint monochromatic trees. We determine t2(K(n1, n2,…, nk)) of the complete k‐partite graph K(n1, n2,…, nk). In particular, we prove that t2(K(n, m)) = ? (m‐2)/2n? + 2, where 1 ≤ nm. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A graph H is light in a given class of graphs if there is a constant w such that every graph of the class which has a subgraph isomorphic to H also has a subgraph isomorphic to H whose sum of degrees in G is ≤ w. Let be the class of simple planar graphs of minimum degree ≥ 4 in which no two vertices of degree 4 are adjacent. We denote the minimum such w by w(H). It is proved that the cycle Cs is light if and only if 3 ≤ s ≤ 6, where w(C3) = 21 and w(C4) ≤ 35. The 4‐cycle with one diagonal is not light in , but it is light in the subclass consisting of all triangulations. The star K1,s is light if and only if s ≤ 4. In particular, w(K1,3) = 23. The paths Ps are light for 1 ≤ s ≤ 6, and heavy for s ≥ 8. Moreover, w(P3) = 17 and w(P4) = 23. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 44: 261–295, 2003  相似文献
