The non-commutative torus C *(n,) is realized as the C*-algebra of sections of a locally trivial C*-algebra bundle over S with fibres isomorphic to C *n/S, 1) for a totally skew multiplier 1 on n/S. D. Poguntke [9] proved that A is stably isomorphic to C(S) C(*( Zn/S, 1) C(S) A Mkl( C) for a simple non-commutative torus A and an integer kl. It is well-known that a stable isomorphism of two separable C*-algebras is equivalent to the existence of equivalence bimodule between them. We construct an A-C(S) A-equivalence bimodule.

Let t be the flow (parametrized with respect to arc length) of a smooth unit vector field v on a closed Riemannian manifold M n , whose orbits are geodesics. Then the (n-1)-plane field normal to v, v, is invariant under d t and, for each x M, we define a smooth real function x (t) : (1 + i (t)), where the i(t) are the eigenvalues of AA T, A being the matrix (with respect to orthonormal bases) of the non-singular linear map d2t , restricted to v at the point x -t M n.Among other things, we prove the Theorem (Theorem II, below). Assume v is also volume preserving and that x ' (t) 0 for all x M and real t; then, if x t : M M is weakly missng for some t, it is necessary that vx 0 at all x M.

We prove a local limit theorem (LLT) on Cramer-type large deviations for sums S V = t V ( t ), where t , t Z , 1, is a Markov Gaussian random field, V Z , and is a bounded Borel function. We get an estimate from below for the variance of S V and construct two classes of functions , for which the LLT of large deviations holds.

We obtain the analytic expression for the total cross section of the reaction e e +l l + (l=,) taking possible quasianapole interaction effects into account. We find numerical restrictions on the interaction parameter value from data for the reaction e e ++ in the energy domain below the Z 0 peak.

A complex Banach spaceA which is also an associative algebra provided with a conjugate linear vector space involution * satisfying (a 2)*=(a *)2, aa * a=a3 and ab+ba2ab for alla, b inA is shown to be a C*-algebra. The assumptions onA can be expressed in terms of the Jordan algebra obtained by symmetrization of the product ofA and are satisfied by any C*-algebra. Thus we obtain a purely Jordan characterization of C*-algebras.

In the literature (see [5, 6, 8]) there are two families of spaces called Kondratiev spaces: (c)± and (S c)± for 0 1. We investigate the relation between the spaces and show that they are topologically isomorphic when (d) L2 (d) (d) is the underlying Gel'fand triple for (c)±. In this case we also give the explicit relation between the S-transform and -transform on (c)-1 and (S c)-1, respectively.

Let M be a closed connected smooth manifold with dim M=n6, and : 1(M) Z be an epimorphism. Denote by the group ring of 1(M) and let be its Novikov completion. Let D * be a free-based finitely generated chain complex over . Assume that D ii=0 for i1 and in–1 and that D * has the same simple homotopy type as the Novikov-completed simplicial chain complex of the universal covering M. Let N be an integer. We prove that D * can be realized, up to the terms of of degree N as the Novikov complex of a Morse map : M S 1, belonging to . Applications to Arnold's conjectures and to the theory of fibering of M over S 1 are given.

Let X 4 be a smooth hypersurface of degree d 5, and let S X be a smooth hyperplane section. Assume that there exists a non trivial cycle Z Pic(X) of degree 0, whose image in CH1(X) is in the kernel of the Abel–Jacobi map. The family of couples (X, S) containing such Z is a countable union of analytic varieties. We show that it has a unique component of maximal dimension, which is exaclty the locus of couples (X, S) satisfying the following condition: There exists a line S and a plane P 4 such that P X = , and Z = – dh, where h is the class of the hyperplane section in CH1(S). The image of Z in CH1(X) is thus 0. This construction provides evidence for a conjecture by Nori which predicts that the Abel–Jacobi map for 1–cycles on X is injective.

We study the regularity of the minimizer u for the functional F (u,f)=|u|2 + |u–f{2 over all maps uH 1(, S 2). We prove that for some suitable functions f every minimizer u is smooth in if 0 and for the same functions f, u has singularities when is large enough.

Summary We consider a particular Markov process t u on S ,S= n . The random variable t u (x) is interpreted as the number of particles atx at timet. The initial distribution of this process is a translation invariant measure withf(x)d<. The evolution is as follows: At rateb(x) a particle is born atx but moves instantaneously toy chosen with probabilityq(x, y). All particles at a site die at ratepd withp[0, 1],d, + and individual particles die independently from each other at rate (1–p)d. Every particle moves independently of everything else according to a continuous time random walk.We are mainly interested in the caseb=d andn3. The process exhibits a phase transition with respect to the parameterp: Forp<p * all weak limit points of ( t µ ) ast still have particle density (x)d. Forp>p *, t µ ) converges ast to the measure concentrated on the configuration identically 0. We calculatep * as well asp (n) , the points with the property that the extremal invariant measures have forp>p (n) infiniten-th moment of (x) and forp<p (n) finiten-th moment. We show the case 1>p *>p(2)>p(3)...p (n) >0, p(n)0 occurs for suitable values of the other parameters. Forp<p (2) we prove the system has a one parameter set of extremal invariant measures and we determine their domain of attraction. Part I contains statements of all results but only the proofs of the results about the process for values ofp withp<p (2) and the behaviour of then-th moments andp (n) .

The problem (QPQR) considered here is: minimizeQ 1 (x) subject toQ i (x) 0,i M 1 {2,...,m},x P R n, whereQ i (x), i M {1} M 1 are quadratic forms with positive semi-definite matrices, andP a compact nonempty polyhedron of Rn. Applications of (QPQR) and a new method to solve it are presented.Letu S={u R m;u 0, u i= l}be fixed;then the problem:iM minimize u iQi (x (u)) overP, always has an optimal solutionx (u), which is either feasible, iM i.e. u C1 {u S;Q i (x (u)) 0,i M 1} or unfeasible, i.e. there exists ani M 1 withu C {u S; Qi(x(u)) 0}.Let us defineC i Ci S i withS i {u S; u i=0}, i M. A constructive method is used to prove that C i is not empty and thatx (û) withiM û C i characterizes an optimal solution to (QPQR). Quite attractive numerical results have been reached with this method.

Summary LetC be the symmetric cusp {(x, y)2:–x yx ,x0} where >1. In this paper we decide whether or not reflecting Brownian motion inC has a semimartingale representation. Here the reflecting Brownian motion has directions of reflection that make constant angles with the unit inward normals to the boundary. Our results carry through for a wide class of asymmetric cusps too.

IfG is a second countable locally compact group acting continuously on a separableC *-algebraA, then every primitive ideal of the crossed productC * (G, A) is contained in an induced primitive ideal, and ifG is amenable, equality holds. Thus ifG is amenable and acts freely on Prim(A), the generalized Effros-Hahn conjecture holds: there is a canonical bijection between primitive ideals ofC * (G, A) andG-quasi-orbits in Prim(A). Applications to the Mackey machine for a non-regularly embedded normal subgroup of a locally compact group are discussed. The proof of the theorem is based on a local cross-section result together with Mackey's original methods. The authors were partially supported by National Science Foundation Research GrantsThe first-named author would like to thank the Department of Mathematics, University of Pennsylvania, for its warm hospitality during his 1977–78 stay, during which time this research was conducted

The pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Grushin classes \~S inf0 sup, , 0 < 1, of slowly varying symbols are shown to form spectrally invariant unital Frécher-*-algebras (*-algebras) in L(L 2(R n )) and in L(H st ) for weighted Sobolev spaces H inf supst defined via a weight d function . In all cases, the Fredholm property of an operator can be characterized by uniform ellipticity of the symbol. This gives a converse to theorems of Grushin and Kumano-Ta-Taniguchi. Both, the spectrum and the Fredholm spectrum of an operator turn out to be independent of the choices of s, t and .The characterization of the Fredholm property by uniform ellipticity leads to an index theorem for the Fredholm operators in these classes, extending results of Fedosov and Hörmander.

Summary Let P be a Markov operator on L (X, , m). Theorem 1: (i) P is weakly mixing (ii) For every fL there is a sequence {nt} of density 1 such that all w *-cluster points of are constants (iii) For every fL there is a {kj} with w *-convergent to a constant. Theorem 2: If P is induced by a non-singular transformation , P is weakly mixing For every A, { –n(A)} has a remotely trivial subsequence. The existence of a finite invariant measure is not required in these results.

Suppose that in a domain R(, B) of variables (r, ): (0 r , 1 +B(r–r 0 ) 2–B(r–r0), where > 0, B > 0, 1 < 0 < 2 are numbers) a metric ds2 = dr2 +G(r, )d 2 and a function k(r, ) are given. The problem of isometrically immersing ds2 in E 4 with prescribed Gaussian torsion is considered. The following is proved: The class C 5 metric ds 2 is locally realized in the form of a class C 3 surface F 2 whose Gaussian torsion is the prescribed class C 3 function (r, ).Translated from Ukrainskii Geometricheskii Sbornik, No. 35, pp. 38–47, 1992.

Let (X n ) n 0 be a real random walk starting at 0, with centered increments bounded by a constant K. The main result of this study is: |P(S n n x)–P( sup0 u 1 B u x)| C(n,K) n/n, where x 0, 2 is the variance of the increments, S n is the supremum at time n of the random walk, (B u ,u 0) is a standard linear Brownian motion and C(n,K) is an explicit constant. We also prove that in the previous inequality S n can be replaced by the local score and sup0 u 1 B u by sup0 u 1|B u |.
