Diarylbutadiyne derivatives are ideal monomers for providing the π‐electron‐conjugated system of polydiacetylenes (PDAs). The geometrical parameters for diacetylene topochemical polymerization are known. However, control of the molecules under these parameters is yet to be addressed. This work shows that by simply tailoring diarylbutadiyne with amide side‐chain substituents, the arrangement of the substituents and the resulting hydrogen bond framework allows formation of π‐electron‐conjugated PDA.

The glucose oxidase and glucose mediated formation of amphipilic copolymers of N‐(ferrocenoylmethyl)acrylamide (NFMA) and N,N‐diethylacrylamide (DEA) in aqueous cyclodextrin solution is presented. Thereby, NFMA is not only a comonomer but also part of the redox initiation system. The obtained copolymers contain NFMA units between 1 and 10 mol%. The molecular masses of the copolymers are dependent on the ferrocene content, whereupon molecular weights between 38 000 and 71 000 g mol−1 are achieved.

To enhance the limited degradability of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), a straightforward method of synthesizing poly[(ethylene glycol)‐co‐(glycolic acid)] (P(EG‐co‐GA)) via a ruthenium‐catalyzed, post‐polymerization oxyfunctionalization of various PEGs is developed. Using this method, a set of copolymers with GA compositions of up to 8 mol% are prepared with minimal reduction in molecular weight (<10%) when compared to their commercially available starting materials. The P(EG‐co‐GA) copolymers are shown to undergo hydrolysis under mild conditions.

The chemical control of cell division has attracted much attention in the areas of single cell‐based biology and high‐throughput screening platforms. A mussel‐inspired cytocompatible encapsulation method for achieving a “cell‐division control” with cross‐linked layer‐by‐layer (LbL) shells is developed. Catechol‐grafted polyethyleneimine and hyaluronic acid are chosen as polyelectrolytes for the LbL process, and the cross‐linking of polyelectrolytes is performed at pH 8.5. Cell division is controlled by the number of the LbL nanolayers and cross‐linking reaction. We also suggest a new measuring unit, , for quantifying “cell‐division timing” based on microbial growth kinetics.

The preparation of multifunctional polymers and block copolymers by a straightforward one‐pot reaction process that combines enzymatic transacylation with light‐controlled polymerization is described. Functional methacrylate monomers are synthesized by enzymatic transacylation and used in situ for light‐controlled polymerization, leading to multifunctional methacrylate‐based polymers with well‐defined microstructure.

Vinyl acetate is polymerized in the living way under the irradiation of blue light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) or sunlight without photocatalyst at ambient temperature. 2‐(Ethoxycarbonothioyl)sulfanyl propanoate is exclusively added and acts as initiator and chain transfer agent simultaneously in the current system. Poly(vinyl acetate) with well‐regulated molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (Đ < 1.30) is synthesized. Near quantitative end group fidelity of polymer is demonstrated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and matrix‐assisteed laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS).

A series of fluorene‐based conjugated polymers containing the aggregation‐induced emissive (AIE)‐active tetraphenylethene and dicarboxylate pseudocrown as a receptor exhibits a unique dual‐mode sensing ability for selective detection of lead ion in water. Fluorescence turn‐off and turn‐on detections are realized in 80%–90% and 20% water in tetrahydrofuran (THF), respectively, for lead ion with a concentration as low as 10−8 m .

A thermo‐, photo‐ and chemoresponsive shape‐memory material is successfully prepared by introducing α‐cyclodextrin (αCD) and azobenzene (Azo) into a poly(acrylate acid)/alginate (PAA/Alg) network. The tri‐stimuli‐responsive formation/dissociation of αCD‐Azo acts as molecular switches freezing or increasing the molecular mobility. The resulting film herein can be processed into temporary shapes as needed and recovers its initial shape upon the application of light irradiation, heating, or chemical agent independently. Furthermore, the agar diffusion test suggests that the α‐CD‐Alg/Azo‐PAA has good biocompatibility for L929 fibroblast‐like cells.

Nine different perylene derivatives are prepared and their ability to initiate, when combined with an iodonium salt (and optionally N‐vinylcarbazole), a ring‐opening cationic photopolymerization of epoxides under very soft halogen lamp irradiation is investigated. One of them is particularly efficient under a red laser diode exposure at 635 nm and belongs now to the very few systems available at this wavelength. The photochemical mechanisms are studied by steady‐state photolysis, electron spin resonance spin trapping, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, and laser flash photolysis techniques.

Triptycene‐based micorporous polymer is functionalized with CO2‐philic tetrazole moieties via ZnCl2‐catalyzed post‐polymerization. Gas adsorption experiments indicate that it possesses high CO2 uptake capacity, reaching 134 cm3 g−1 (26.5 wt%) at 1.0 bar and 273 K, along with high selectivity towards CO2 over N2 and CH4. The porous polymeric networks present the promising potentials as efficient adsorbents in clean energy applications.

The sodium salt of the new bis(mesitoyl)phosphinic acid (BAPO‐OH) can be prepared in a very efficient one‐pot synthesis. It is well soluble in water and hydrolytically stable for at least several weeks. Remarkably, it acts as an initiating agent for the surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) of styrene to yield monodisperse, spherical nanoparticles. Time‐resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TR‐EPR) and chemically induced electron polarisation (CIDEP) indicate preliminary mechanistic insights.

This communication reports the first example of precision polyolefin nanoalloys where an exotic immiscible polymer is nanometrically dispersed with stability in a polyolefin matrix in a highly controlled mode. Following the preparation of polypropylene/multiwalled carbon nanotubes nanocomposites (PP/MWCNTs) by in situ Ziegler‐Natta polymerization, the hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of individual MWCNTs are used to initiate ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone, resulting in PP/poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) alloy with PCL grafted on MWCNTs. Upon phase formation, the PP/MWCNTs‐g‐PCL alloys exhibit a unique PCL dispersion morphology, which is stable and solely governed by PCL molecular weight.

Two soluble poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s (PPTCs) with high molecular weights (M w up to 26 800) are synthesized by the metal‐free 1,3‐dipolar polycycloadditions of 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenyl diphenylpropiolate ( 1 ) and tetraphenylethene‐containing diazides ( 2 ) in dimethylformamide at 150 °C for 12 h in high yields (up to 93%). The resultant polymers are soluble in common organic solvents and are thermally stable with 5% weight loss temperatures higher than 375 °C. The PPTCs are nonemissive in solutions, but become highly luminescent upon aggregation, showing a phenomenon of aggregation‐induced emission. Their aggregates can be used as fluorescent chemosensors for high‐sensitivity detection of explosives.

Pentacyclic lactam acceptor unit TPTI invented by our group is proved to be a good building block for efficient D‐A copolymers used in organic solar cells. Here, two D‐A copolymers PBTTPTI and PTTTPTI are developed by copolymerizing TPTI with 2,2′‐bithiophene (BT) or thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene (TT). PBTTPTI and PTTTPTI exhibit good solubility and strong interchain π–π interaction even in dilute solution. They possess deep HOMO levels (ca. ‐5.3 eV), partial crystallinity, and good hole mobilities. Blending with PC71BM, PBTTPTI and PTTTPTI give decent power conversion efficiencies (PCE) up to 6.83% and 5.86%, with outstanding fill factors (FF) of 74.3% and 71.3%, respectively.

The functionalization of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles by poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) brush is completed by the combination of a mussel inspired biomimetic anchoring group and Huisgen cyclo‐addition “click chemistry.” Herein, the direct coupling of an azide modified catechol derivative with an alkyne end‐functionalized P3HT is described. This macromolecular binding agent is used to access core@corona ZnO@P3HT with a stable and homogeneous conjugated organic corona. Preliminary photoluminescence measurement proves an efficient electron transfer from the donor P3HT to the acceptor ZnO nanoparticles upon grafting, thus demonstrating the potential of such a combination in organic electronics.

A new approach is reported for the preparation of a graphene–epoxy flexible transparent capacitor obtained by graphene–polymer transfer and UV‐induced bonding. SU8 resin is employed for realizing a well‐adherent, transparent, and flexible supporting layer. The achieved transparent graphene/SU8 membrane presents two distinct surfaces: one homogeneous conductive surface containing a graphene layer and one dielectric surface typical of the epoxy polymer. Two graphene/SU8 layers are bonded together by using an epoxy photocurable formulation based on epoxy resin. The obtained material showed a stable and clear capacitive behavior.

Nanotubes have attracted considerable attention due to their unique 1D hollow structure; however, the fabrication of pure nanotubes via block copolymer self‐assembly remains a challenge. In this work, the successful preparation of core–shell–corona (CSC) nanotubular micelles with uniform diameter and high aspect ratio is reported, which is achieved via self‐assembly of a poly (styrene‐b‐4‐vinyl pyridine‐b‐ethylene oxide) triblock terpolymer in binary organic solvents with assistance of solution thermal annealing. Via direct visualization of trapped intermediates, the nanotube is believed to be formed via large sphere—large solid cylinderical aggregates—nanotube transformations, wherein the unique solid to hollow transition accompanied with the unidirectional growth is distinct from conventional pathway. In addition, by virtue of the CSC structure, gold nanoparticles are able to be selectively incorporated into different micellar domains of the nanotubes, which may have potential applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

In this study, the binding kinetics of synthetic glycopolypeptides to the dendritic cell lectin DC‐SIGN and their inhibition potential for DC‐SIGN interactions with the gp120 envelope glycoprotein of HIV‐1 (gp120) are investigated.

Halo‐ester‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) are successfully prepared by the transesterification of alkyl halo‐esters with PEGs using Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) as a biocatalyst under the solventless conditions. Transesterifications of chlorine, bromine, and iodine esters with tetraethylene glycol monobenzyl ether (BzTEG) are quantitative in less than 2.5 h. The transesterification of halo‐esters with PEGs are complete in 4 h. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy with MALDI‐ToF and ESI mass spectrometry confirm the structure and purity of the products. This method provides a convenient and “green” process to effectively produce halo‐ester PEGs.

The chemical synthesis of a novel polyfuran, poly(2,3‐bis(hexylthio)‐[1,4]dithiino[2,3‐c]furan) ( PBDF ), substituted at the 2,3‐positions with an S‐alkylated dithiin unit, is reported. The new polymer has been characterized in terms of its electronic absorption, electrochemical, and thermal properties. Employment of the dithiin moiety provides intrinsic additional electroactivity, as well as a functional handle for substitution with alkyl groups, enhancing the processability of the polymer. The new polymer is compared with the closely related and well‐established literature compounds PEDOT and PEDTT as well‐studied, highly chalcogenated polythiophenes.
