We review a theoretical scenario for the origin of the spin-glass phase of underdoped cuprate materials. In particular it is shown how disorder in a correlated d-wave superconductor generates a magnetic phase by inducing local droplets of antiferromagnetic order which eventually merge and form a quasi-long range ordered state. When correlations are sufficiently strong, disorder is unimportant for the generation of static magnetism but plays an additional role of pinning disordered stripe configurations. We calculate the spin excitations in a disordered spin-density wave phase, and show how disorder and/or applied magnetic fields lead to a slowing down of the dynamical spin fluctuations in agreement with neutron scattering and muon spin rotation (μSR) experiments.  相似文献

We study the dynamical spin susceptibility of a correlated d-wave superconductor (dSC) in the presence of nonmagnetic disorder, using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach. This model provides a concrete realization of the notion that disorder slows down spin fluctuations, which eventually "freeze out." The evolution of disorder-induced spectral weight transfer agrees qualitatively with experimental observations on underdoped cuprate superconductors. For sufficiently large disorder concentrations, static spin density wave (SDW) order is created when droplets of magnetism nucleated by impurities overlap. We also study the disordered stripe state coexisting with a dSC and compare its magnetic fluctuation spectrum to that of the disorder-generated SDW phase.  相似文献

We study heat transport in one-dimensional (1-D) quantum spin systems by the nonequilibrium Green?s function method. We show that, in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems, the excitation spectrums of the reservoirs and the central spin chain can be tuned to be matched or mismatched by changing the external magnetic field. When the spectrums are matched, heat current through the system is large; however if the spectrums are mismatched, heat current becomes much smaller. Through tuning the magnetic field, the system can thus act as a heat switch, and we discuss the condition for the system to exhibit strong switch effect.  相似文献

The magnetic phase transition in materials with exchange disorder (amorphous ferromagnets, spin glasses) is discussed. In the critical temperature range the behavior of amorphous ferromagnetic transition metal-metalloid glasses is found to be similar to the one derived for a three-dimensional homogeneous Heisenberg ferromagnet. The most prominent difference between disordered and homogeneous materials is manifested in a large temperature range of deviations from the mean field behavior beyond the critical region, as observed experimentally for the temperature dependence of the linear susceptibility of amorphous ferromagnets and of the nonlinear susceptibility of spin glasses. A molecular field theory with correlations in space and time is developed, which relates the deviations from the mean field behavior to the interplay between the temperature dependent thermal correlations in the spin system and the spatial fluctuations of the material. Application to dynamical processes (kinetic critical slowing down) is discussed.  相似文献

The electrons on the surface of a disordered multi-layer integer quantum Hall system constitute an unusual chiral metal with ballistic motion transverse to the field, and diffusive motion parallel to it. We present a non-perturbative analytic treatment of an appropriate model, consisting of disordered chiral fermions in two dimensions. A supersymmetric generating functional is set up for the correlation functions of this system. The strong disorder limit is mapped into a supersymmetric spin chain, with ferromagnetic exchange coupling, reflecting the electron's chiral motion. The ferromagnetic ground state and the spin wave excitations, corresponding to the diffusion modes of the chiral metal, are found exactly. The parametric density of states correlator in the ergodic limit is computed from a Boltzmann-weighted sum over low-energy spin states. The result is of a universal form and coincides with that for a hermitian random matrix.  相似文献

We numerically investigate magnon-mediated spin transport through nonmagnetic metal/ferromagnetic insulator (NM/FI) heterostructures in the presence of Anderson disorder, and discover universal behaviors of the spin conductance in both one-dimensional (1D) and 2D systems. In the localized regime, the variance of logarithmic spin conductance σ2(lnGT) shows a universal linear scaling with its average ⟨lnGT⟩, independent of Fermi energy, temperature, and system size in both 1D and 2D cases. In 2D, the competition between disorder-enhanced density of states at the NM/FI interface and disorder-suppressed spin transport leads to a non-monotonic dependence of average spin conductance on the disorder strength. As a result, in the metallic regime, average spin conductance is enhanced by disorder, and a new linear scaling between spin conductance fluctuation rms(GT) and average spin conductance GT is revealed which is universal at large system width. These universal scaling behaviors suggest that spin transport mediated by magnon in disordered 2D NM/FI systems belongs to a new universality class, different from that of charge conductance in 2D normal metal systems.  相似文献

Using the tight-binding formalism, we explore the effect of weak disorder upon the conductance of zigzag edge silicene nanoribbons (SiNRs), in the limit of phase-coherent transport. We find that the fashion of the conductance varies with disorder, and depends strongly on the type of disorder. Conductance dips are observed at the Van Hove singularities, owing to quasilocalized states existing in surface disordered SiNRs. A conductance gap is observed around the Fermi energy for both edge and surface disordered SiNRs, because edge states are localized. The average conductance of the disordered SiNRs decreases exponentially with the increase of disorder, and finally tends to disappear. The near-perfect spin polarization can be realized in SiNRs with a weak edge or surface disorder, and also can be attained by both the local electric field and the exchange field.  相似文献

We study a tight binding model including both on site disorder and coupling of the electrons to randomly oriented magnetic moments. The transport properties are calculated via the Kubo-Greenwood scheme, using the exact eigenstates of the disordered system and large system size extrapolation of the low frequency optical conductivity. We first benchmark our method in the model with only structural disorder and then use it to map out the transport regimes and metal-insulator transitions in problems involving (i) scattering from random magnetic moments, and (ii) the combined effect of structural disorder and magnetic scattering. We completely map out the dependence of the d.c conductivity on electron density (n) the structural disorder (Δ) and the magnetic coupling (J’), and locate the insulator-metal phase boundary in the space of n-Δ-J’. These results serve as a reference for understanding transport in systems ranging from magnetic semiconductors to double exchange ‘colossal magnetoresistance’ systems. A brief version of this study appears in our earlier paper Europhys. Lett. 65, 75 (2004).  相似文献

This contribution reviews an ab initio two-step procedure to determine exchange interactions, spin-wave spectra, and thermodynamic properties of itinerant magnets. In the first step, the self-consistent electronic structure of a system is calculated for a collinear spin structure at zero temperature. In the second step, parameters of an effective classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian are determined using the magnetic force theorem and the one-electron Green functions. The Heisenberg Hamiltonian and methods of statistical physics are employed in subsequent evaluation of magnon dispersion laws, spin-wave stiffness constants, and Curie/Néel temperatures. The applicability of the developed scheme is illustrated by selected properties of various systems such as transition and rare-earth metals, disordered alloys including diluted magnetic semiconductors, ultrathin films, and surfaces. A comparison to other ab initio approaches is presented as well.  相似文献

We report a thorough theoretical investigation on the quantum transport of a disordered four terminal device in the presence of Rashba spin orbit coupling (RSOC) in two dimensions. Specifically we compute the behaviour of the longitudinal (charge) conductance, spin Hall conductance and spin Hall conductance fluctuation as a function of the strength of disorder and Rashba spin orbit interaction using the Landauer Büttiker formalism via Green’s function technique. Our numerical calculations reveal that both the conductances diminish with disorder. At smaller values of the RSOC parameter, the longitudinal and spin Hall conductances increase, while both vanish in the strong RSOC limit. The spin current is more drastically affected by both disorder and RSOC than its charge counterpart. The spin Hall conductance fluctuation does not show any universality in terms of its value and it depends on both disorder as well as on the RSOC strength. Thus the spin Hall conductance fluctuation has a distinct character compared to the fluctuation in the longitudinal conductance. Further one parameter scaling theory is studied to assess the transition to a metallic regime as claimed in literature and we find no confirmation about the emergence of a metallic state induced by RSOC.  相似文献

Sharp localization transitions of chiral edge states in disordered quantum wires subject to a strong magnetic field are shown to be driven by crossovers from two-to one-dimensional localization of bulk states. As a result, the two-terminal conductance is found to exhibit discontinuous transitions at zero temperature between exactly integer plateau values and zero, reminiscent of first-order phase transitions. We discuss the corresponding phase diagram. The spin of the electrons is shown to result in a multitude of phases when the spin degeneracy is raised by the Zeeman energy. The width of conductance plateaus is found to depend sensitively on the spin flip rate 1/τs.  相似文献

We present a generalized Landauer-Büttiker transport theory for multiterminal spin transport in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. Using this theory we point out that there exists equilibrium spin currents and nonequilibrium pure spin currents, without any magnetic element in the system. Quantitative results are presented for a Y-shaped conductor. It is shown that pure spin currents cause a voltage drop and, hence, can be measured.  相似文献

We show that the effective spin-spin interaction between three-level atoms confined in a multimode optical cavity is long-ranged and sign changing, like the RKKY interaction; therefore, ensembles of such atoms subject to frozen-in positional randomness can realize spin systems having disordered and frustrated interactions. We argue that, whenever the atoms couple to sufficiently many cavity modes, the cavity-mediated interactions give rise to a spin glass. In addition, we show that the quantum dynamics of cavity-confined spin systems is that of a Bose-Hubbard model with strongly disordered hopping but no on-site disorder; this model exhibits a random-singlet glass phase, absent in conventional optical-lattice realizations. We briefly discuss experimental signatures of the realizable phases.  相似文献

We study the quasiparticle transport coefficients in disordered d-wave superconductors. We find that spin and charge excitations are generally localized unless magnetic impurities are present. If the system is close to a nesting point in the impurity-scattering unitary limit, the tendency towards localization is reduced while the quasiparticle density of states gets enhanced by disorder. We also show that the residual repulsive interaction among quasiparticles has a delocalizing effect and increases the density of states.  相似文献

We construct a unified semiclassical theory of charge and spin transport in chaotic ballistic and disordered diffusive mesoscopic systems with spin-orbit interaction. Neglecting dynamic effects of spin-orbit interaction, we reproduce the random matrix theory results that the spin conductance fluctuates universally around zero average. Incorporating these effects into the theory, we show that geometric correlations generate finite average spin conductances, but that they do not affect the charge conductance to leading order. The theory, which is confirmed by numerical transport calculations, allows us to investigate the entire range from the weak to the previously unexplored strong spin-orbit regime, where the spin rotation time is shorter than the momentum relaxation time.  相似文献

When a mesoscopic two dimensional four-terminal Hall cross bar with spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is subjected to a perpendicular uniform magnetic field B, both integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and mesoscopic spin Hall effect (MSHE) may exist when disorder strength W in the sample is weak. We have calculated the low field "phase diagram" of MSHE in the (B,W) plane for disordered samples in the IQHE regime. For weak disorder, MSHE conductance G(sH) and its fluctuations rms(G(sH)) vanish identically on even numbered IQHE plateaus, they have finite values on those odd numbered plateaus induced by SOI, and they have values G(sH)=1/2 and rms(G(sH))=0 on those odd numbered plateaus induced by Zeeman energy. At larger disorders, the system crosses over into a regime where both G(sH) and rms(G(sH)) are finite, a chaotic regime, and finally a localized regime.  相似文献

We present a mean-field solution for a quantum, short-range interacting, disordered, SO(3) Heisenberg spin model, in which the Gaussian distribution of couplings is centered in an antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling J[over ]>0, and which, for weak disorder, can be treated as a perturbation of the pure AF Heisenberg system. The phase diagram contains, apart from a Néel phase at T=0, spin-glass and paramagnetic phases whose thermodynamic stability is demonstrated by an analysis of the Hessian matrix of the free-energy. The magnetic susceptibilities exhibit the typical cusp of a spin-glass transition.  相似文献

Spin effects in the transport properties of a quantum dot with spin-charge separation are investigated. It is found that the nonlinear transport spectra are dominated by spin dynamics. Strong spin polarization effects are observed in a magnetic field. They can be controlled by varying gate and bias voltages. Complete polarization is stable against interactions. When polarization is not complete it is power law enhanced by non-Fermi-liquid effects.  相似文献

The disordered spinel system, Zn0.5Co0.5FeCrO4 has been investigated using the low field magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. From the present results it appears that this system orders into a cluster spin glass state with the magnetic moments of the ferrimagnetic clusters randomly frozen. Compared to the Ni and Co zinc ferrites with the same magnetic dilution, introduction of Cr into the B sites appears to increase the frustration and disorder dramatically. The predicted phase diagrams for the ordering in diluted magnetic spinels do not describe the magnetic behaviour of this system, presumably due to the disorder in the B sublattice in addition to the dilution in the A sublattice.  相似文献

We study spin-dependent electron transport properties of a thermally driven interacting quantum dot. When an external magnetic field is applied to the quantum dot, the effective transmissions of spin-up and spin-down electrons are separated from each other and have a perfect mirror symmetry with respect to the incident energy at a certain gate voltage. A pure spin current can be induced in the system and modulated by a magnetic field. Under certain magnetic field strengths, a larger pure spin current can be obtained at gate voltages with the values in a range, not just at a specific voltage. These results indicate that the system can be worked as a pure spin current generator.  相似文献
