A SIMPLE-C algorithm and Jones-Launder k-ε two-equation turbulence model are used to simulate a two-dimensional jet impinging obliquely on a flat surface. Both the continuity and momentum equations for the unsteady state are cast into suitable finite difference equations. The pressure, velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent energy dissipation rate distributions are solved and show good agreement with various experimental data. The calculations show that the flow field structure of the jet impinging obliquely on a flat surface is strongly affected by the oblique impingement angle. The maximum pressure zone of the obliquely impinging jet flow field moves towards the left as the oblique impingement angle is decreased.

The calculations of quasi‐three‐dimensional momentum equations were carried out to study the influence of wall rotation on the characteristics of an impinging jet. The pressure coefficient, the mean velocity distributions and the components of Reynolds stress are calculated. The flow is assumed to be steady, incompressible and turbulent. The finite volume scheme is used to solve the continuity equation, momentum equations and k–ε model equations. The flow characteristics were studied by varying rotation speed ω for 0?ω?167.6 rad/s, the distance from nozzle to disk (H/d) was (3, 5, 8 and 10) and the Reynolds number Re base on VJ and d was 1.45 × 104. The results showed that, the radial velocity and turbulence intensity increase by increasing the rotation speed and decrease in the impingement zone as nozzle to disk spacing increases. When the centrifugal force increases, the radial normal stresses and shear stresses increase. The location of maximum radial velocity decreases as the local velocity ratio (α) increases. The pressure coefficient depends on the centrifugal force and it decreases as the distance from nozzle to plate increases. In impingement zone and radial wall jet, the spread of flow increases as the angular velocity decreases The numerical results give good agreement with the experiment data of Minagawa and Obi (Int. J. of Heat and Fluid Flow 2004; 25 :759–766). Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The flow structure of a bubbly impinging jet in the presence of heat transfer between the two-phase flow and the surface is numerically investigated on the basis of the Eulerian approach. The model uses the system of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations in the axisymmetric approximation written with account for the inverse effect of the bubbles on the average and fluctuating flow parameters. The influence of the gas volumetric flow rate ratio and the dimensions of the bubbles on the flow structure in a gas-liquid impinging jet is studied, In the presence of gas bubbles the liquid velocity is higher than the corresponding value in the single-phase flow. A considerable, more than twofold, anisotropy between the axial and radial turbulent fluctuations in the gas-liquid impinging jet is shown to exist. An addition of air bubbles leads to a considerable growth in the liquid velocity fluctuations in the two-phase flow (up to 50% compared with the single-fluid liquid impinging jet). An increase in the disperse phase dimensions leads to intensification of turbulence of the liquid.

Mesoscale chemical reactors capable of operating in the turbulent flow regime, such as confined impinging jets reactors (CIJR), offer many advantages for rapid chemical processing at the microscale. One application where these reactors are used is flash nanoprecipitation, a method for producing functional nanoparticles. Because these reactors often operate in a flow regime just beyond transition to turbulence, modeling flows in these reactors can be problematic. Moreover, validation of computational fluid dynamics models requires detailed and accurate experimental data, the availability of which has been very limited for turbulent microscale flows. In this work, microscopic particle image velocimetry (microPIV) was performed in a mesoscale CIJR at inlet jet Reynolds numbers of 200, 1,000, and 1,500. Pointwise and spacial turbulence statistics were calculated from the microPIV data. The flow was observed to be laminar and steady in the entire reactor at a Reynolds number of 200. However, at jets Reynolds numbers of 1,000 and 1,500, instabilities as a result of the jets impinging along the centerline of the reactor lead to a highly turbulent impingement region. The peak magnitude of the normalized Reynolds normal and shear stresses within this region were approximately the same for the Reynolds numbers of 1,000 and 1,500. The Reynolds shear stress was found to exhibit a butterfly shape, consistent with a flow field dominated by an oblique rocking of the impingement zone about the center of the reactor. Finally, the spatial auto- and cross-correlations velocity fluctuations were calculated and analyzed to obtain an understanding of size of the coherent structures.

A single subcooled jet of water which undergoes boiling upon impingement on a discrete heat source is studied experimentally using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV). The impinging jet issues from a 3.75 mm diameter sharp-edged orifice in a confining orifice plate positioned 4 orifice diameters from the target surface. The behavior at jet Reynolds numbers of 5,000 and 15,000 is compared for a constant jet inlet subcooling of 10 °C. Fluorescent illumination allows for simultaneous imaging of both the flow tracers and the vapor bubbles in the flow. Flow structure, time-averaged velocities, and turbulence statistics are reported for the liquid regions within the confinement gap for a range of heat inputs at both Reynolds numbers, and the effect of the vapor generation on the flow is discussed. Vapor generation from boiling is found to modify the liquid velocities and turbulence fluctuations in the confinement gap. Flow in the confinement gap is dominated by vapor flow, and the vapor bubbles disrupt both the vertical impinging jet and horizontal wall jet flow. Moreover, vapor bubbles are a significant source of turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation, with the bubbly regions above the heated surface experiencing the most intense turbulence modification. Spectral analysis indicates that a Strouhal number of 0.023 is characteristic of the interaction between bubbles and turbulent liquid jets.

Turbulent mixing takes an important role in chemical engineering, especially when the chemical reaction is fast compared to the mixing time. In this context a detailed knowledge of the flow field, the distribution of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and its dissipation rate is important, as these quantities are used for many mixing models. For this reason we conduct a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a confined impinging jet reactor (CIJR) at Re = 500 and Sc = 1. The data is compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and the basic flow features match between simulation and experiment. The DNS data is analysed and it is shown that the flow is dominated by a stable vortex in the main mixing duct. High intensities of turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation are found in the impingement zone which decrease rapidly towards the exit of the CIJR. In the whole CIJR the turbulence is not in equilibrium. The strong mixing in the impingement zone leads to a rapid development of a monomodal PDF. Due to the special properties of the flow field, a bimodal PDF is generated in cross-sections downstream the impingement zone, that slowly relaxes under relaminarising conditions. The time required for meso-mixing is dominating the overall mixing performance.

The current work experimentally investigates the flow characteristics of an air jet impinging on an open rotor-stator system with a low non-dimensional spacing, G?=?0.02, and with a very low aspect ratio, e/D?=?0.25. The rotational Reynolds numbers varied from $0.33\times10^5$ to $5.32\times10^5$ , while the jet Reynolds numbers ranged from 17.2?×?103 to 43?×?103. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were taken along the entire disk diameter in three axial planes. From the obtained PIV velocity fields, the flow statistics were computed. A recirculation flow region, which was centered at the impingement point and possessed high turbulence intensities, was observed. Local peaks in root-mean-square fluctuating velocity distributions appeared in the recirculation region and near the periphery, respectively. Proper orthogonal decomposition analysis was applied to the cases of the jet impinging on the rotor with and without rotation to reveal the coherent structures in the jet region.

The prediction of the response of unsteady flows submitted to external excitation is a real challenge for the optimization of industrial processes. As the jet flow is a very basic turbulent flow related to mixing and entrainment phenomena via turbulent structure dynamic, we investigate the transient behavior of an axisymmetric jet submitted to a large and sudden decrease of its ejection velocity. The non stationary flow evolution is studied experimentally. Measurements along the jet axis based on pure ensemble averaging show clearly the convective motion of the perturbation and the adaptation of the local interaction to the local jet time scale. A transverse investigation in the non stationary region show that the mean flow and its turbulence is deeply affected during the local velocity decrease.

Direct numerical simulation(DNS) of spatially developing round turbulent jet flow with Reynolds number 4,700 was carried out. Over 20 million grid points were used in this simulation. Fully compressible three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations were solved. High order explicit spatial difference schemes and Runge–Kutta time integration scheme were used to calculate derivatives and time marching, respectively. Non-reflecting boundary conditions and exit zone techniques were adopted. Some refined computational grids were used in order to capture the smallest turbulent structures near the centerline of the jet. Low level disturbance were imposed on the jet inflow velocity to trigger the developing of turbulence. Turbulent statistics such as mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, third order velocity moments were obtained and compared with experimental data. One-dimensional velocity autospectra was also calculated. The inertial region where the spectra decays according to the k − 5/3 was observed. The quantitative profiles of mean velocity and all of the third order velocity moments which were difficult to measure via experimental techniques were presented here in detail. The jet flow was proven to be close to fully self-similar around 19 jet diameters downstream of jet exit. The statistic data and revealed flow feature obtained in this paper can provide valuable reference for round turbulent jet research.

Hybrid RANS/LES of flow and heat transfer in round impinging jets
Fluid flow and convective heat transfer predictions are presented of round impinging jets for several combinations of nozzle-plate distances H/D = 2, 6 and 13.5 (where D is the nozzle diameter) and Reynolds numbers Re = 5000, 23,000 and 70,000 with the newest version of the k-ω model of Wilcox (2008) and three hybrid RANS/LES models. In the RANS mode of the hybrid RANS/LES models, the k-ω model is recovered. Three formulations are considered to activate the LES mode. The first model is similar to the hybrid models of Davidson and Peng (2003) and Kok et al. (2004). The turbulent length scale is replaced by the grid size in the destruction term of the k-equation and in the definition of the RANS eddy viscosity. As grid size, a maximum measure of the hexahedral grid cell is used. The second model has the same k-equation, but the eddy viscosity is the minimum of the k-ω eddy viscosity and the Smagorinsky eddy viscosity, following a proposal by Batten et al. (2004). The Smagorinsky eddy viscosity is formed with the cube root of the cell volume. The third model has, again, the same k-equation, but has an eddy viscosity which is an intermediate between the eddy viscosities of the first and second models. This is reached by using the cube root of the cell volume in the eddy viscosity formula of the first model. The simulation results are compared with experimental data for the high Reynolds number cases Re = 23,000 and Re = 70,000 and LES data for the low-Reynolds number case Re = 5000. The Reynolds numbers are defined with the nozzle diameter and the bulk velocity at nozzle outlet. At low nozzle-plate distance (the impingement plate is in the core of the jet), turbulent kinetic energy is overpredicted by RANS in the stagnation flow region. This leads to overprediction of the heat transfer rate along the impingement plate in the impact zone. At high nozzle-plate distance (the impingement plate is in the mixed-out region of the jet), the turbulence mixing is underpredicted by RANS in the shear layer of the jet which gives a too high length of the jet core. This also results in overprediction of the heat transfer rate in the impingement zone caused by too big temperature gradients at impingement. All hybrid RANS/LES models are able to correct the heat transfer overprediction of the RANS model. For good predictions at low nozzle-plate distance, it is necessary to sufficiently resolve the formation and development of the near-wall vortices in the jet impingement region. At high nozzle-plate distance, the essence is to capture the evolution and breakup of the flow unsteadiness in the shear layer of the jet, so that accurate mean and fluctuating velocity profiles are obtained in the impingement region. Although the models have a quite different theoretical justification and generate a quite different eddy viscosity in some flow regions, their overall results are very comparable. The reason is that in zones that are crucial for the results, the models behave similarly.

The flow and temperature fields of a turbulent impinging jet are rather complex. In order to accurately describe the flow and heat-transfer process, two important factors that must be taken into account are the turbulence model and the wall function. Several turbulence models, including κ–? turbulence models, κ–ω turbulence models, low-Re turbulence models, the κ–κl–ω turbulence model, the Transition SST turbulence model, the V2F turbulence model and the RSM turbulence model, are examined and compared to experimental data. Furthermore, for the near wall region, various wall functions are presented for comparison and they include the standard wall function, the scale wall function, the non-equilibrium wall function and the enhanced wall function. The distribution features of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and Nusselt number are determined in order to provide a reliable reference for the multiphase impinging jet in the future.

This paper describes a vortex detection algorithm used to expose and statistically characterize the coherent flow patterns observable in the velocity vector fields measured by particle image velocimetry in the impingement region of air curtains. The philosophy and the architecture of this algorithm are presented. Its strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The results of a parametrical analysis performed to assess the variability of the response of our algorithm to the three user-specified parameters in our eduction scheme are reviewed. The technique is illustrated in the case of a plane turbulent impinging twin-jet with an opening ratio of 10. The corresponding jet Reynolds number, based on the initial mean flow velocity U 0 and the jet width e, is 14,000. The results of a statistical analysis of the size, shape, spatial distribution and energetic content of the coherent eddy structures detected in the impingement region of this test flow are provided. Although many questions remain open, new insights into the way these structures might form, organise and evolve are given. Relevant results provide an original picture of the plane turbulent impinging jet.

The flow field associated with a jet impinging onto a surface at an inclined angle is investigated using pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) and particle image velocimetry. The PSP yields continuous measurements of pressure on the jet impingement surface. The jet footprint on the impingement surface is visualized using the half-maximum pressure contour. The results indicate that the impingement angle of the jet is the dominant parameter in determining the footprint of the jet on the impingement surface. This contour is similar in shape to an ellipse that is created by projecting the nozzle through the impingement surface. The ellipse is centered at the location of maximum pressure and the width of the minor axis is just over one jet diameter. The location of maximum pressure is found upstream of the geometric impingement point and this location is a strong function of the impingement angle. A curve fit for the location of maximum pressure can be constructed using an exact solution of the Navier–Stokes equations for a non-orthogonal stagnation flow. The maximum value of pressure is a function of impingement angle and varies as the sine of the impingement angle squared; the maximum pressure is also a function of jet impingement distance. Using these results, a simple procedure for predicting the overall structure of the jet on the impingement surface is presented.

This effort explores the impact of dilute polymer solutions on the turbulence characteristics in a submerged liquid impinging-jet configuration. Turbulent impinging jets are commonly used in technological applications such as drying, scouring, cooling, or heating due to an enhancement in transport characteristics in the impingement region under certain nozzle-to-wall configurations. Previous efforts have identified significant turbulence modifications in the presence of dilute concentrations of polymer in both bounded and unbounded flows, though the former has received considerably more attention. To this end, particle-image velocimetry measurements were taken for an axisymmetric turbulent impinging jet with a nozzle-to-wall distance H/D = 6.8 and nominal Reynolds number of 26,000. Measurements were performed for both plain water and dilute polymer solutions of polyethylene oxide at concentrations of 50 and 100 ppm. The mean and turbulence characteristics of these three flows are contrasted and it is observed that the two polymer solutions modify both the mean and turbulent characteristics of the jet in all three regions of interest (the free-jet, impingement, and wall-jet regions). Of interest, the 50 ppm case yielded a slight suppression of the turbulence in the free-jet region accompanied by a longer axial length of the potential core compared to the case of plain water. In contrast, the 100 ppm case exhibits clear enhancement of the turbulence in the free-jet region and a shortening of the potential core length. The effect of polymer was opposite in the impingement and wall-jet regions wherein the turbulence was slightly suppressed in the 100 ppm case in a manner consistent with the onset of the Toms effect in this wall-bounded region of the flow.

Radially confined, axisymmetric impinging jet flows are investigated by using the standard particle image velocimetry experimental technique. The confinement is achieved by placing a confinement block around a jet, co-axially. The inner diameter of the block is successively varied to nine different values. The inlet-based Reynolds number of the jet is kept constant at 5000. The nine diametric values yielded nine different flows of widely different characteristics. Among other usage, an insight into the flow characteristics can be helpful in designing compact impinging jet applications, as such a radially confined flow is equivalent to passing the pre-impingement jet through a hole perforated in a solid wall (i.e. the jet source can be placed behind a wall). The study has revealed that the flows, in general, form two circulation zones, three mixing layers, and two boundary layers. Based on turbulence characteristics of the five shear layers, overall characteristics of the flows are understood systematically. Mean velocity and various turbulence statistics are also presented, and mechanisms underlying behind their variations are explained. Finally, scaling laws are obtained for the mean velocity and for the turbulence statistics, both in the impingement and in the wall jet regions.

The flow in the boundary layer in the vicinity of the stagnation point of a flat plate is examined. The outer stream consists of turbulent flow of the jet type, directed normally to the plate. Assumptions concerning the connection between the pulsations in velocity and temperature in the boundary layer and the average parameters chosen on the basis of experimental data made it possible to obtain an isomorphic solution of the boundary layer equations. Equations are obtained for the friction and heat transfer at the wall in the region of gradient flow taking into account the effect of the turbulence of the impinging stream. It is shown that the friction at the wall is insensitive to the turbulence of the impinging stream, while the heat transfer is significantly increased with an increase in the pulsations of the outer flow. These properties are confirmed by the results of experimental studies [1–4].Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 5, pp. 83–87, September–October, 1973.

In present research, two turbulent opposed impinging air jets issuing from triangular nozzles with fixed and variable exit velocity ratios and different nozzle-to-nozzle distances have been studied numerically and then compared with rectangular and circular nozzles. The finite volume method has been applied for solving mass and momentum equations. The turbulence model being used here is k-ε RNG. Distributions of pressure, turbulence, kinetic energy and its dissipation rate in various regions especially on the impingement regions have been obtained with high accuracy. Study of the nozzle geometries has shown the advantage of triangular nozzles over other geometries. First, the triangle’s base in nozzle geometry has an important role in our study case which, mixing two flows and regions with high turbulence intensity, directly depends on it. Second, our results show that circular and rectangular nozzles have less efficiency than triangular nozzles in mixing applications. Third and last, it was found that the radial jet being created by opposed jets has some similarities to free jets. In this investigation, air in standard atmospheric pressure has been applied as working fluid.
