Large strain finite element calculations of unit cells subjected to triaxial axisymmetric loadings are presented for plastically orthotropic materials containing a periodic distribution of aligned spheroidal voids. The spatial distribution of voids and the plastic flow properties of the matrix are assumed to respect transverse isotropy about the axis of symmetry of the imposed loading so that a two-dimensional axisymmetric analysis is adequate. The parameters varied pertain to load triaxiality, matrix anisotropy, initial porosity and initial void shape so as to include the limiting case of penny-shaped cracks. Attention is focussed on comparing the individual and coupled effects of void shape and material anisotropy on the effective stress–strain response and on the evolution of microstructural variables. In addition, the effect of matrix anisotropy on the mode of plastic flow localization is discussed. From the results, two distinct regimes of behavior are identified: (i) at high triaxialities, the effect of material anisotropy is found to be persistent, unlike that of initial void shape and (ii) at moderate triaxialities the influence of void shape is found to depend strongly on matrix anisotropy. The findings are interpreted in light of recent, microscopically informed models of porous metal plasticity. Conversely, observations are made in relation to the relevance of these results in the development and calibration of a broader set of continuum damage mechanics models.  相似文献

The present paper extends the Gurson and GLD models [Gurson, A.L., 1977. Mater. Technol. 116, 290–297] to involve the coupled effects of void size and void shape on the macroscopic yield behavior of non-linear porous materials and on the void growth. A spheroidal representative volume element (RVE) under a remote axisymmetric homogenous strain boundary condition is carefully analyzed. A wide range of void aspect ratios covering the oblate spheroidal, spherical and prolate spheroidal void are taken into account to reflect the shape effect. The size effect is captured by the Fleck–Hutchinson phenomenological strain gradient plasticity theory [Fleck, N.A., Hutchinson, J.W., 1997. Strain gradient plasticity. In: Hutchinson, J.W., Wu, T.Y. (Eds.), Advance in Applied Mechanics, vol. 33, Academic Press, New York, pp. 295–361]. A new size-dependent damage model like the Gurson and GLD models is developed based on the traditional minimum plasticity potential principle. Consequently, the coupled effects of void size and void shape on yield behavior of porous materials and void growth are discussed in detail. The results indicate that the void shape effect on the yield behavior of porous materials and on the void growth can be modified dramatically by the void size effect and vice versa. The applied stress triaxiality plays an important role in these coupled effects. Moreover, there exists a cut-off void radius rc, which depends only on the intrinsic length l1 associated with the stretch strain gradient. Voids of effective radius smaller than the critical radius rc are less susceptible to grow. These findings are helpful to our further understanding to some impenetrable micrographs of the ductile fracture surfaces.  相似文献

In many ductile metallic alloys, the damage process controlled by the growth and coalescence of primary voids nucleated on particles with a size varying typically between 1 and 100 μm, is affected by the growth of much smaller secondary voids nucleated on inclusions with a size varying typically between 0.1 and 3 μm. The goal of this work is first to quantify the potential effect of the growth of these secondary voids on the coalescence of primary voids using finite element (FE) unit cell calculations and second to formulate a new constitutive model incorporating this effect. The nucleation and growth of secondary voids do essentially not affect the growth of the primary voids but mainly accelerate the void coalescence process. The drop of the ductility caused by the presence of secondary voids increases if the nucleation strain decreases and/or if their volume fraction increases and/or if the primary voids are flat. A strong coupling is indeed observed between the shape of the primary voids and the growth of the second population enhancing the anisotropy of the ductility induced by void shape effects. The new micromechanics-based coalescence condition for internal necking introduces the softening induced by secondary voids growing in the ligament between two primary voids. The FE cell calculations were used to guide and assess the development of this model. The use of the coalescence condition relies on a closed-form model for estimating the evolution of the secondary voids in the vicinity of a primary cavity. This coalescence criterion is connected to an extended Gurson model for the first population including the effect of the void aspect ratio. With respect to classical models for single void population, this new constitutive model improves the predictive potential of damage constitutive models devoted to ductile metal while requiring only two new parameters, i.e. the initial porosity of second population and a void nucleation stress, without any additional adjustment.  相似文献

Finite element (FE) calculations of a cylindrical cell containing a spherical hole have been performed under large strain conditions for varying triaxiality with three different constitutive models for the matrix material, i.e. rate independent plastic material with isotropic hardening, visco-plastic material under both isothermal and adiabatic conditions, and porous plastic material with a second population of voids nucleating strain controlled. The “mesoscopic” stress-strain and void growth responses of the cell are compared with predictions of the modified Gurson model in order to study the effects of varying triaxiality and strain rate on the critical void volume fraction. The interaction of two different sizes of voids was modelled by changing the strain level for nucleation and the stress triaxiality. The study confirms that the void volume fraction at void coalescence does not depend significantly on the triaxiality if the initial volume fraction of the primary voids is small and if there are no secondary voids. The strain rate does not affect fc either. The results also indicate that a single internal variable, f, is not sufficient to characterize the fracture processes in materials containing two different size-scales of void nucleating particles.  相似文献

This paper studies the effects of the initial relative void spacing, void pattern, void shape and void volume fraction on ductile fracture toughness using three-dimensional, small scale yielding models, where voids are assumed to pre-exist in the material and are explicitly modeled using refined finite elements. Results of this study can be used to explain the observed fracture toughness anisotropy in industrial alloys. Our analyses suggest that simplified models containing a single row of voids ahead of the crack tip is sufficient when the initial void volume fraction remains small. When the initial void volume fraction becomes large, these simplified models can predict the fracture initiation toughness (JIc) with adequate accuracy but cannot predict the correct JR curve because they over-predict the interaction among growing voids on the plane of crack propagation. Consequently, finite element models containing multiple rows of voids should be used when the material has large initial void volume fraction.  相似文献

A population of several spherical voids is included in a three-dimensional, small scale yielding model. Two distinct void growth mechanisms, put forth by [Int. J. Solids Struct. 39 (2002) 3581] for the case of a two-dimensional model containing cylindrical voids, are well contained in the model developed in this study for spherical voids. A material failure criterion, based on the occurrence of void coalescence in the unit cell model, is established. The critical ligament reduction ratio, which varies with stress triaxiality and initial porosity, is used to determine ligament failure between the crack tip and the nearest void. A comparison of crack initiation toughness of the model containing cylindrical voids with the model containing spherical voids reveals that the material having a sizeable fraction of spherical voids is tougher than the material having cylindrical voids. The proposed material failure determination method is then used to establish the fracture resistance curve (JR curve) of the material. For a ductile material containing a small volume fraction of microscopic voids initially, the void by void growth mechanism prevails, which results in a JR curve having steep slope. On the other hand, for a ductile material containing a large volume fraction of initial voids, the multiple voids interaction mechanism prevails, which results in a flat JR curve. Next, the effect of T-stress on fracture resistance is examined. Finally, nucleation and growth of secondary microvoids and their effects on void coalescence are briefly discussed.  相似文献

A nonlocal elastic–plastic material model is used to show that the rate of void growth is significantly reduced when the voids are small enough to be comparable with a characteristic material length. For a very small void in the material between much larger voids the competition between an increased growth rate due to the stress concentrations around the larger voids and a reduced growth rate due to the nonlocal effects is studied. The analyses are based on an axisymmetric unit cell model with special boundary conditions, which allow for a relatively simple investigation of a full three dimensional array of spherical voids. It is shown that the high growth rate of very small voids predicted by conventional plasticity theory is not realistic when the effect of a characteristic length, dependent on the dislocation structure, is accounted for.  相似文献

The Gurson model [J. Engrg. Mater. Technol. 99 (1977) 2] has been widely used to study the deformation and failure of metallic materials containing microvoids. The void volume fraction is the only parameter representing voids since the void size does not come into play in the Gurson model. Based on the Taylor dislocation model [Proc. R. Soc. (Lond.) A145 (1934) 362; J. Int. Metals 62 (1938) 307], we extend the Gurson model to account for the void size effect. It is shown that the yield surfaces for micron- and submicron-sized voids are significantly larger than that given by the Gurson model. For a voided, dilating material subject to uniaxial tension, the void size has essentially no effect on the stress–strain curve at small initial void volume fraction. However, as the initial void volume fraction increases, the void size effect may become significant.  相似文献

This paper summarizes our recent studies on modeling ductile fracture in structural materials using the mechanism-based concepts. We describe two numerical approaches to model the material failure process by void growth and coalescence. In the first approach, voids are considered explicitly and modeled using refined finite elements. In order to predict crack initiation and propagation, a void coalescence criterion is established by conducting a series of systematic finite element analyses of the void-containing, representative material volume (RMV) subjected to different macroscopic stress states and expressed as a function of the stress triaxiality ratio and the Lode angle. The discrete void approach provides a straightforward way for studying the effects of microstructure on fracture toughness. In the second approach, the void-containing material is considered as a homogenized continuum governed by porous plasticity models. This makes it possible to simulate large amount of crack extension because only one element is needed for a representative material volume. As an example, a numerical approach is proposed to predict ductile crack growth in thin panels of a 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, where a modified Gologanu–Leblond–Devaux model [Gologanu, M., Leblond, J.B., Devaux, J., 1993. Large strain finite element method is employed to investigate the damaging effect of two generations of voids in ductile materials. An axisymmetric cylinder embedding an initially spherical void is chosen as the model cell. Secondary voids will initiate around the initial void when the local stress/strain in the matrix increases to certain critical conditions. This event is numerically simulated through an empty element technique. The interaction between these two generations of voids has been proved to be favourable to the voiding condition, thus accelerating the material damage, characterized by the value of the overall elastic modulus which may undergo drastic drop when nearing final fracture.  相似文献

Two distinct mechanisms of crack initiation and advance by void growth have been identified in the literature on the mechanics of ductile fracture. One is the interaction a single void with the crack tip characterizing initiation and the subsequent void by void advance of the tip. This mechanism is represented by the early model of Rice and Johnson and the subsequent more detailed numerical computations of McMeeking and coworkers on a single void interacting with a crack tip. The second mechanism involves the simultaneous interaction of multiple voids on the plane ahead of the crack tip both during initiation and in subsequent crack growth. This mechanism is revealed by models with an embedded fracture process zone, such as those developed by Tvergaard and Hutchinson. While both mechanisms are based on void nucleation, growth and coalescence, the inferences from them with regard to crack growth initiation and growth are quantitatively different. The present paper provides a formulation and numerical analysis of a two-dimensional plane strain model with multiple discrete voids located ahead of a pre-existing crack tip. At initial void volume fractions that are sufficiently low, initiation and growth is approximately represented by the void by void mechanism. At somewhat higher initial void volume fractions, a transition in behavior occurs whereby many voids ahead of the tip grow at comparable rates and their interaction determines initiation toughness and crack growth resistance. The study demonstrates that improvements to be expected in fracture toughness by reducing the population of second phase particles responsible for nucleating voids cannot be understood in terms of trends of one mechanism alone. The transition from one mechanism to the other must be taken into account.  相似文献

The effect of void size on void growth in single crystals with uniformly distributed cylindrical voids is studied numerically using a finite deformation strain gradient crystal plasticity theory with an intrinsic length parameter. A plane strain cell model is analyzed for a single crystal with three in-plane slip systems. It is observed that small voids allow much larger overall stress levels than larger voids for all the stress triaxialities considered. The amount of void growth is found to be suppressed for smaller voids at low stress triaxialities. Significant differences are observed in the distribution of slips and on the shape of the deformed voids for different void sizes. Furthermore, the orientation of the crystalline lattice is found to have a pronounced effect on the results, especially for the smaller void sizes.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations using Modified Embedded Atom Method (MEAM) potentials were performed to analyze material length scale influences on damage progression of single crystal nickel. Damage evolution by void growth and coalescence was simulated at very high strain rates (108–1010/s) involving four specimen sizes ranging from ≈5000 to 170,000 atoms with the same initial void volume fraction. 3D rectangular specimens with uniform thickness were provided with one and two embedded cylindrical voids and were subjected to remote uniaxial tension at a constant strain rate. Void volume fraction evolution and the corresponding stress–strain responses were monitored as the voids grew under the increasing applied tractions.The results showed that the specimen length scale changes the dislocation pattern, the evolving void aspect ratio, and the stress–strain response. At small strain levels (0–20%), a damage evolution size scale effect can be observed from the damage-strain and stress–strain curves, which is consistent with dislocation nucleation argument of Horstemeyer et al. [Horstemeyer, M.F., Baskes, M.I., Plimpton, S.J., 2001a. Length scale and time scale effects on the plastic flow of FCC metals. Acta Mater. 49, pp. 4363–4374] playing a dominant role. However, when the void volume fraction evolution is plotted versus the applied true strain at large plastic strains (>20%), minimal size scale differences were observed, even with very different dislocation patterns occurring in the specimen. At this larger strain level, the size scale differences cease to be relevant, because the effects of dislocation nucleation were overcome by dislocation interaction.This study provides fodder for bridging material length scales from the nanoscale to the larger scales by examining plasticity and damage quantities from a continuum perspective that were generated from atomistic results.  相似文献

The macroscopic response of an incompressible power-law matrix containing aligned spheroidal voids is investigated. The voids are assumed to be arranged in a uniform array, and the response of the solid is evaluated by isolating a typical block of the material containing a single void. The requisite boundary value problem for this “unit cell” is solved using a spectral method which is an adaption of that used by Lee and Mear “Axisymmetric Deformation of Power-law Solids containing Elliptical Inhomogeneities. Part I: Rigid Inclusions”, J. Mech. Phys. Solids, (1992) 8, 1805. Attention is restricted to axisymmetric deformation, and results for the macroscopic strain-rates (or strains) are presented for a range of void shape, void volume concentrations, hardening exponents and remote stress triaxilities.  相似文献

We present micromechanical finite element results that quantify coalescence effects based upon temperature and different spatial arrangements of voids. We propose a critical intervoid ligament distance (ILD) to define void coalescence that is derived from micromechanical simulations in which void volume fraction evolves as a function of strain. Several parameters were varied using the temperature and strain rate internal variable plasticity model of Bammann–Chiesa–Johnson to determine the coalescence effects. The parameters include two types of materials with different work hardening rates (304L stainless steel and 6061T6 aluminum), three different temperatures (298, 400, and 600 K), several boundary conditions (force and displacement: uniaxial, plane strain, and biaxial), type of element used (plane strain and axisymmetric), different ILDs, and the number of voids (one and two void configurations). The present study provides a basis for macroscale modeling of coalescence which is briefly discussed.  相似文献

A micromechanics model based on the theoretical framework of plastic localization into a band introduced by Rice is developed. The model consists of a planar band with a square array of equally sized cells, with a spherical void located in the centre of each cell. The periodic arrangement of the cells allows the study of a single unit cell for which fully periodic boundary conditions are applied. The micromechanics model is applied to analyze failure by ductile rupture in experiments on double notched tube specimens subjected to combined tension and torsion carried out by the present authors. The stress state is characterized in terms of the stress triaxiality and the Lode parameter. Two rupture mechanisms can be identified, void coalescence by internal necking at high triaxiality and void coalescence by internal shearing at low triaxiality. For the internal necking mechanism, failure is assumed to occur when the deformation localizes into a planar band and is closely associated with extensive void growth until impingement of voids. For the internal shearing mechanism, a simple criterion based on the attainment of a critical value of shear deformation is utilized. The two failure criteria capture the transition between the two rupture mechanisms successfully and are in good agreement with the experimental result.  相似文献

Spall fracture and other rapid tensile failures in ductile materials are often dominated by the rapid growth of voids. Recent research on the mechanics of void growth clearly shows that void nucleation may be represented as a bifurcation phenomenon, wherein a void forms spontaneously followed by highly localized plastic flow around the new void. Although thermal, viscoplastic, and work hardening effects all play an essential role in the earliest stages of nucleation and growth, the flow becomes dominated by spherical radial inertia, which soon causes all voids to grow asymptotically at the same rate, regardless of differences in initial conditions or constitutive details, provided only that there is the same density of matrix material and the same excess loading history beyond the cavitation stress.These two facts, initiation by bifurcation at a cavitation stress, at which a void first appears, and rapid domination by inertia, are used to postulate a simple, but physically realistic, model for nucleation and early growth of voids in a ductile material under rapid tensile loading. A reasonable statistical distribution for the cavitation stress at various nucleation sites and a simple similarity solution for inertially dominated void growth permit a simple calculation of the initiation and early growth of porosity in the material.Parametric analyses are presented to show the effect that loading rate, peak loading stress, density of nucleation sites, physical properties of the material, etc. have on the applied pressure and distribution of void sizes when a critical porosity is reached.  相似文献

Hydrostatic stress can affect the non-elastic deformation and flow stress of polymeric materials and certain metallic alloys. This sensitivity to hydrostatic stress can also influence the fracture toughness of ductile materials, which fail by void growth and coalescence. These materials typically contain a non-uniform distribution of voids of varying size-scales and void shapes. In this work, the effects of void shape and microvoid interaction in pressure-sensitive materials are examined via a two-prong approach: (i) an axisymmetric unit-cell containing a single ellipsoidal void and (ii) a plane-strain unit-cell consisting of a single large void and a population of discrete microvoids. The representative material volume in both cases is subjected to physical stress states similar to highly stressed regions ahead of a crack. Results show that oblate voids and microvoid cavitation can severely reduce the critical stress of the material. These effects can be compounded under high levels of pressure-sensitivity. In some cases, the critical stress responsible for rapid void growth is reduced to levels comparable to the yield strength of the material. The contribution of void shape and pressure-sensitivity to the thermal- and moisture-induced voiding phenomenon in IC packages is also discussed.  相似文献
