For subelliptic harmonic maps from a Carnot group into a Riemannian manifold without boundary, we prove that they are smooth near any -regular point (see Definition 1.3) for sufficiently small . As a consequence, any stationary subelliptic harmonic map is smooth away from a closed set with zero HQ-2 measure. This extends the regularity theory for harmonic maps (cf. By a blow-up analysis as in [8] for a related problem we rule out concentration of energy for radially symmetric wave maps from the (1+ 2)-dimensional Minkowski space to the sphere. When combined with the local existence and regularity results of Christodoulou and Tahvildar-Zadeh for this problem, our result implies global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for radially symmetric wave maps for smooth radially symmetric data. The author gives an alternative and simple proof of the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for wave maps from the (1+2)-dimensional Minkowski space to an arbitrary compact smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary, for arbitrary smooth, radially symmetric data. Let be a one dimensional foliation on a projective space, that is, an invertible subsheaf of the sheaf of sections of the tangent bundle. If the singularities of are isolated, Baum-Bott formula states how many singularities, counted with multiplicity, appear. The isolated condition is removed here. Let be the dimension of the singular locus of . We give an upper bound of the number of singularities of dimension , counted with multiplicity and degree, that may have, in terms of the degree of the foliation. We give some examples where this bound is reached. We then generalize this result for a higher dimensional foliation on an arbitrary smooth and projective variety.

We start by discussing the solvability of the following superlinear problem where , is a smooth bounded domain and f satisfies a one-sided Landesman-Lazer condition. We also consider systems of semilinear elliptic equations with nonlinearities of the above form, so exhibiting superlinearity as and resonance as . The existence of complete minimal surfaces in a ball was proved by N. Nadirashvili in 1996. However, the construction of such surfaces with nontrivial topology remained open. In 2002, the authors showed examples of complete orientable minimal surfaces with arbitrary genus and one end. In this paper we construct complete bounded nonorientable minimal surfaces in with arbitrary finite topology. The method we present here can also be used to construct orientable complete minimal surfaces with arbitrary genus and number of ends.

A determination of the fixed components, base points and irregularity is made for arbitrary numerically effective divisors on any smooth projective rational surface having an effective anticanonical divisor. All of the results are proven over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Applications, to be treated in separate papers, include questions involving: points in good position, birational models of rational surfaces in projective space, and resolutions for 0-dimensional subschemes of defined by complete ideals.
