We show how to construct all ``forbidden divisors' for the pseudovariety of not inherently nonfinitely based finite semigroups. Several other results concerning finite semigroups that generate an inherently nonfinitely based variety that is miminal amongst those generated by finite semigroups are obtained along the way. For example, aside from the variety generated by the well known six element Brandt monoid \tb , a variety of this type is necessarily generated by a semigroup with at least 56 elements (all such semigroups with 56 elements are described by the main result). We investigate the question of whether a finite involution semigroup is inherently nonfinitely based (INFB), which means that it is not contained in any finitely based locally finite variety. Although we fall short of a full characterization, we nevertheless clarify a number of interesting subcases.  相似文献

We give a sufficient condition which ensures that a semiring with an idempotent addition is inherently nonfinitely based. This enables us to provide a number of small and natural examples of nonfinitely based semirings, including semirings of binary relations on a finite set. An algebra is inherently non-finitely (Q-)based if it is not a member of any locally finite (quasi-)variety, whose (quasi-)identities are finitely based. We prove that no finite semigroup is inherently non-finitely Q-based. This is in marked contrast to the case of varieties, where there are many inherently non-finitely based finite semigroups which have all been described by the second author. For every semigroup of finite exponent whose chains of idempotents are uniformly bounded we construct an identity which holds on this semigroup but does not hold on the variety of all idempotent semigroups. This shows that the variety of all idempotent semigroups E is not contained in any finitely generated variety of semigroups. Since E is locally finite and each proper subvariety of E is finitely generated [1, 3, 4], the variety of all idempotent semigroups is a minimal example of an inherently non-finitely generated variety.  相似文献

Recently, Zhang and Luo proved that a certain semigroup L of order six is non-finitely based. The main aim of the present article is to generalize this result to a sufficient condition for the non-finite basis property of semigroups. It follows that the semigroup L is inherently non-finitely based relative to a certain class of semigroups. It is also shown that the variety var?L generated by L contains a unique maximal subvariety that is non-finitely based. Consequently, the variety var ?L is not a limit variety.  相似文献

Over the years, several finite semigroups have been found to generate varieties with continuum many subvarieties. However, finite involution semigroups that generate varieties with continuum many subvarieties seem much rarer; in fact, only one example—an inverse semigroup of order 165—has so far been published. Nevertheless, it is shown in the present article that there are many smaller examples among involution semigroups that are unstable in the sense that the varieties they generate contain some involution semilattice with nontrivial unary operation. The most prominent examples are the unstable finite involution semigroups that are inherently non-finitely based, the smallest ones of which are of order six. It follows that the join of two finitely generated varieties of involution semigroups with finitely many subvarieties can contain continuum many subvarieties.  相似文献

We characterize the ordered semigroups which are decomposable into simple and regular components. We prove that each ordered semigroup which is both regular and intra-regular is decomposable into simple and regular semigroups, and the converse statement also holds. We also prove that an ordered semigroup S is both regular and intra-regular if and only if every bi-ideal of S is an intra-regular (resp. semisimple) subsemigroup of S. An ordered semigroup S is both regular and intra-regular if and only if the left (resp. right) ideals of S are right (resp. left) quasi-regular subsemigroups of S. We characterize the chains of simple and regular semigroups, and we prove that S is a complete semilattice of simple and regular semigroups if and only if S is a semilattice of simple and regular semigroups. While a semigroup which is both π-regular and intra-regular is a semilattice of simple and regular semigroups, this does not hold in ordered semigroups, in general.  相似文献

The left regular band structure on a hyperplane arrangement and its representation theory provide an important connection between semigroup theory and algebraic combinatorics. A finite semigroup embeds in a real hyperplane face monoid if and only if it is in the quasivariety generated by the monoid obtained by adjoining an identity to the two-element left zero semigroup. We prove that this quasivariety is on the one hand polynomial time decidable, and on the other minimally non-finitely based. A similar result is obtained for the semigroups embeddable in complex hyperplane semigroups.  相似文献

The concepts of L*-inverse semigroups and left wreath products of semigroups are introduced. It is shown that the L*-inverse semigroup can be described as the left wreath product of a type A semigroupΓand a left regular band B together with a mapping which maps the semigroupΓinto the endomorphism semigroup End(B). This result generalizes the structure theorem of Yamada for the left inverse semigroups in the class of regular semigroups. We shall also provide a constructed example for the L*-inverse semigroups by using the left wreath products.  相似文献

This investigation was stimulated by a question raised by F.R. McMorris and M. Satyanarayana [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 33 (1972), 271–277] which asked whether a regular semigroup with a tree of idempotents is categorical. The question is answered in the affirmative. Characterizations of categorical semigroups are found within the following classes of semigroups: regular semigroups, bands, commutative regular semigroups, unions of simple semigroups, semilattices of groups, and commutative semigroups. Some results are related to part of the work of M. Petrich [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 170 (1972), 245–268]. For instance, it is shown that the poset of J-classes of any regular categorical semigroup is a tree; however, an example of a regular non-categorical semigroup is given in which the poset of J-classes is a chain. It is also shown that the condition that the subsemigroup of idempotents be categorical is sufficient, but not necessary, for an orthodox semigroup to be categorical.  相似文献

P-Ehresmann semigroups are introduced by Jones as a common generalization of Ehresmann semigroups and regular \(*\)-semigroups. Ehresmann semigroups and their semigroup algebras are investigated by many authors in literature. In particular, Stein shows that under some finiteness condition, the semigroup algebra of an Ehresmann semigroup with a left (or right) restriction condition is isomorphic to the category algebra of the corresponding Ehresmann category. In this paper, we generalize this result to P-Ehresmann semigroups. More precisely, we show that for a left (or right) P-restriction locally Ehresmann P-Ehresmann semigroup \(\mathbf{S}\), if its projection set is principally finite, then we can give an algebra isomorphism between the semigroup algebra of \(\mathbf{S}\) and the partial semigroup algebra of the associate partial semigroup of \(\mathbf{S}\). Some interpretations and necessary examples are also provided to show why the above isomorphism dose not work for more general P-Ehresmann semigroups.  相似文献

The concepts of ℒ*-inverse semigroups and left wreath products of semigroups are introduced. It is shown that the ℒ*-inverse semigroup can be described as the left wreath product of a type A semigroup Γ and a left regular band B together with a mapping which maps the semigroup Γ into the endomorphism semigroup End(B). This result generalizes the structure theorem of Yamada for the left inverse semigroups in the class of regular semigroups. We shall also provide a constructed example for the ℒ*-inverse semigroups by using the left wreath products.  相似文献

In this paper we give a sufficient condition for regular semigroups with a finite height function to be left absolutely flat. As a consequence, we can show that the semigroup Λ(S) of all right translations of a primitive regular semigroupS with only finitely manyR-classes, with composition being from left to right, is absolutely flat and give a generalization of a Bulman-Fleming and McDowell result concerning absolutely flat semigroups from primitive regular semigroups to regular semigroups with a finite height function. These results give examples of semigroups which are amalgamation bases in the class of semigroups. The author thanks the referee for finding errors in the original version of this paper.  相似文献

A filter in a semigroup is a subsemigroup whose complement is an ideal. (Alternatively, in a quasiordered semigroup, a slightly more general definition can be given.) We prove a number of results related to filters in a semigroup and the lattice of filters of a semigroup. For instance, we prove that every complete algebraic lattice can be the lattice of filters of a semigroup. We prove that every finite semigroup is a homomorphic image of a finite semigroup whose lattice of filters is boolean and which belongs to the pseudovariety generated by the original semigroup. We describe filter lattices of some well-known semigroups such as full transformation semigroups of finite sets (which are three-element chains) and free semigroups (which are boolean).  相似文献

We prove that two semigroups with local units are Morita equivalent if and only if they have a joint enlargement. This approach to Morita theory provides a natural framework for understanding McAlister’s theory of the local structure of regular semigroups. In particular, we prove that a semigroup with local units is Morita equivalent to an inverse semigroup precisely when it is a regular locally inverse semigroup.  相似文献
