Various models for ultrasonic scattering from trabecular bone have been proposed. They may be evaluated to a certain extent by comparison with experimental measurements. In order to appreciate limitations of these comparisons, it is important to understand measurement precision. In this article, an approach proposed by Lizzi and co-workers is adapted to model precision of estimates of frequency-dependent backscatter for scattering targets (such as trabecular bone) that contain many scatterers per resolution cell. This approach predicts uncertainties in backscatter due to the random nature of the interference of echoes from individual scatterers as they are summed at the receiver. The model is validated in experiments on a soft-tissue-mimicking phantom and on 24 human calcaneus samples interrogated in vitro. It is found that while random interference effects only partially explain measured variations in the magnitude of backscatter, they are virtually entirely responsible for observed variations in the frequency dependence (exponent of a power law fit) of backscatter.  相似文献

Although bone sonometry has been demonstrated to be useful in the diagnosis of osteoporosis, much remains to be learned about the processes governing the interactions between ultrasound and bone. In order to investigate these processes, ultrasonic attenuation and backscatter in two orientations were measured in 43 human calcaneal specimens in vitro at 500 kHz. In the mediolateral (ML) orientation, the ultrasound propagation direction is approximately perpendicular to the trabecular axes. In the anteroposterior (AP) orientation, a wide range of angles between the ultrasound propagation direction and trabecular axes is encountered. Average attenuation slope was 18% greater while average backscatter coefficient was 50% lower in the AP orientation compared with the ML orientation. Backscatter coefficient in both orientations approximately conformed to a cubic dependence on frequency, consistent with a previously reported model. These results support the idea that absorption is a greater component of attenuation than scattering in human calcaneal trabecular bone.  相似文献

The integral equations that describe scattering in the media with step-rise changing parameters have been numerically solved for the trabecular bone model. The model consists of several hundred discrete randomly distributed elements. The spectral distribution of scattering coefficients in subsequent orders of scattering has been presented. Calculations were carried on for the ultrasonic frequency ranging from 0.5 to 3 MHz. Evaluation of the contribution of the first, second, and higher scattering orders to total scattering of the ultrasounds in trabecular bone was done. Contrary to the approaches that use the μCT images of trabecular structure to modeling of the ultrasonic wave propagation condition, the 3D numerical model consisting of cylindrical elements mimicking the spatial matrix of trabeculae, was applied. The scattering, due to interconnections between thick trabeculae, usually neglected in trabecular bone models, has been included in calculations when the structure backscatter was evaluated. Influence of the absorption in subsequent orders of scattering is also addressed. Results show that up to 1.5 MHz, the influence of higher scattering orders on the total scattered field characteristic can be neglected while for the higher frequencies, the relatively high amplitude interference peaks in higher scattering orders clearly occur.  相似文献

A weak scattering model was proposed for the ultrasonic frequency-dependent backscatter in dense bovine cancellous bone, using two autocorrelation functions to describe the medium: one with discrete homogeneities (spherical distribution of equal spheres) and another, which considers tissue as an inhomogeneous continuum (densely populated medium). The inverse problem to estimate trabecular thickness of bone tissue has been addressed. A combination of the two autocorrelation functions was required to closely approximate the backscatter from bovine bone with various microarchitecture, given that the shape of trabeculae ranges from a rodlike to a platelike shape. Because of the large variation in trabecular thickness, both at an intraspecimen and an interspecimen level, thickness distributions for individual trabeculae for each bone specimen were obtained, and dominant trabecular sizes were determined. Comparison of backscatter measurements to theoretical predictions indicated that there were more than one dominant trabecular sizes that scatter sound for most specimens. Linear regression, performed between dominant trabecular thickness and estimated correlation length, showed significant linear correlation (R(2)=0.81). Attenuation due to scattering by a continuous distribution of scatterers was predicted to be linear over a frequency range from 0.3 to 0.9 MHz, suggesting a possibility that scattering may be a significant source of attenuation.  相似文献

A model of ultrasonic backscattering for cancellous bone saturated by water is proposed. This model assumes that scattering is caused by the solid trabeculae and describes the cancellous bone as a weak scattering medium. The backscatter coefficient is related to the spatial Fourier transform of bone microarchitecture and to the density and compressibility fluctuations between the solid trabeculae and the saturating fluid. The computations of the model make use of three-dimensional numerical images of bone microarchitecture, obtained by tomographic reconstructions with a 10 microm spatial resolution. With this model, the predictions of the frequency dependence and of the magnitude of the backscatter coefficient are reasonably accurate. The theoretical predictions are compared to experimental data obtained on 19 specimens. An accuracy error of approximately 1 dB was found (difference between the averaged experimental values and theoretical predictions). One limit of the model may come from inaccurate values of trabecular bone characteristics needed for the computations (density and longitudinal velocity), which are yet to be precisely determined for human trabecular bone. However, the model is only slightly sensitive to variations of bone material properties. It was found that an accuracy error of 2.2 dB at maximum resulted from inaccurate a priori values of bone material properties. A computation of the elastic mean free path in the medium suggests that multiple scattering plays a minor role in the working frequency bandwidth (0.4-1.2 MHz). It follows from these results that a weak scattering medium model may be appropriate to describe scattering from trabecular bone.  相似文献

A theory for the elastic scattering response from a cylinder insonified by a plane wave was previously derived by Faran. In the present paper, the empirical relationship between Faran's theory and measurements of backscatter coefficient from cylindrical targets using focused transducers is investigated. Experimental measurements of dependence of backscatter coefficient on frequency and diameter for nylon wires are reported. It is found that, under certain conditions (including weak, incoherent scattering), backscatter coefficient measurements from collections of cylindrical scatterers may be meaningfully compared with Faran's model predictions. At low frequencies, the theory and experimental measurements exhibit similar dependences on frequency and diameter, provided that the scatterers are not too densely packed. At higher frequencies, the fine structure of Faran's predictions becomes difficult to reproduce experimentally with a focused transducer. Implications regarding applications to characterization of trabecular bone are discussed.  相似文献

The goal of this study is to propose a model for the ultrasonic frequency-dependent backscatter coefficient in femoral cancellous bone. This model has been developed with success to predict backscatter in human calcaneal bone [Jenson, Ultr. Med. Biol. 2003]. A weak scattering model is used and the backscatter coefficient is expressed in terms of a Gaussian autocorrelation function of the medium. The backscatter coefficient is computed and comparison is made with experimental data for 37 specimens and for frequency ranging from 0.4 to 1.2 MHz. An excellent agreement between experimental data and predictions is found for both the magnitude and the frequency-dependence of the backscatter coefficient. Then, a nonlinear regression is performed for each specimen, and the mean trabecular thickness is estimated. Experimental data and theoretical predictions are averaged over the 37 specimens. We also find a close agreement between theoretical predictions obtained using the Gaussian autocorrelation function (scatterer size=134+/-15 microm) and the mean trabecular thickness (Tb.Th=132+/-12 microm) derived from the analysis of bone 3-D micro-architecture using high-resolution micro-tomography. However, the correlation between individual experimental and estimated Tb.Th values is moderate (R(2)=0.44). The performance of the estimator are limited mainly by two factors: interference noise due to random positioning of the scatterers and attenuation. We show that the fundamental limitation of our estimator due to the speckle noise is around 5 microm for trabecular thickness estimation. This limitation is lower than the observed biological variability which is around 30 microm and should not be a limiting factor for individual prediction. A second limitation is the tremendous attenuation encountered in highly scattering media such as cancellous bone, which results in highly damped backscatter signals. The compensation for attenuation is difficult to perform, and it may be a critical point that limits the precision of the estimator.  相似文献

The corrected Waterman-Truell model and the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique were used to analyze the ultrasonic wave dispersion in trabecular bones mimicking phantoms. A simple two-phase model of the trabecular bone is assumed; the trabeculae structure and the bone marrow. The phase velocity for frequencies within the range from 400 kHz to 800 kHz were computed for different scatterer arrays varying their dimensions and number. The theoretical and numerical results were compared to experimental published data, obtained from a mimicking phantom composed by a periodic array of nylon shreds (trabeculae array) immersed in a water tank. Our results showed an excellent consistency when compared to experimental data. The negative dispersions of −8.48 m/s/MHz and −9.16 m/s/MHz were computed by the multiple scattering method and the numerical approach, respectively, where the latter is closer to the experimental dispersion of −12.09 m/s/MHz. Similar result has been reported in the literature, where the dispersion predicted by the Generalized Self-Consistent Method [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124 (2008) 4047] is −9.96 m/s/MHz.  相似文献

Commercial devices for the ultrasonic characterisation of bone normally report the broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA). This is the slope of the attenuation against frequency in some part of the frequency range 200–1000 kHz. The assumption is that the relationship is linear and hence independent of the frequency range selected. In this study the ultrasonic attenuation in the frequency range 200 to 800 kHz was measured with a variety of transducers in ten trabecular heel bone samples from elderly cadavers, assumed to be osteoporotic.

The results indicate that the attenuation fits better to a second order polynomial function of frequency, than to the linear fit. The use of a straight line fit is only satisfactory in the higher frequency ranges (above 400 kHz). The use of lower frequencies results in a significant measurement error caused by the combination of a poor signal to noise ratio and the departure from linearity and this is greatest for samples with low attenuation. In the worst cases this can amount to a 30% discrepancy between the BUA values measured over different frequency ranges.  相似文献

The frequency-dependent attenuation and backscatter coefficients were measured in 25 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples from 0.2 to 1.2 MHz. When the average attenuation coefficient was fitted to a nonlinear power law α(f)=α(0)+α(1)f(n), the exponent n was found to be 1.65. In contrast, the average backscatter coefficient was fitted to a power law η(f)=η(1)f(n) and the exponent n was measured as 3.25. The apparent bone density was significantly correlated with the parameter α(1) (0.2-0.7 MHz: r = 0.852, 0.6-1.2 MHz: r = 0.832) as well as the backscatter coefficient (0.5 MHz: r = 0.751, 1.0 MHz: r = 0.808).

The paper describes the investigations intended to compare the results of experimental measurements of backscattering properties of the trabecular bone with the results of computer simulations. Ultrasonic RF echoes were collected using two bone scanners operating at 0.58 and 1.3 MHz. The simulations of the backscattered RF echoes were performed using the scattering model of the trabecular bone that consisted of cylindrical and spherical elements uniformly distributed in water-like medium. For each measured or simulated RF backscatter the statistical properties of the signal envelope were determined. Experimental results suggest deviations of the backscattering properties from the Rayleigh distribution. The results of simulation suggest that deviation from Rayleigh distribution depends on the variation of trabeculae diameters and the number of thin trabeculae. Experimentally determined deviations corresponded well to the deviations calculated from simulated echoes assuming trabeculae thickness variation equaled to the earlier published histomorphometric study results.  相似文献

Numerical simulations (finite-difference time domain) are compared to experimental results of ultrasound wave propagation through human trabecular bones. Three-dimensional high-resolution microcomputed tomography reconstructions served as input geometry for the simulation. The numerical simulation took into account scattering, but not absorption. Simulated and experimental values of the attenuation coefficients (alpha, dB/cm) and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA, dB/cm/MHz) were measured and compared on a set of 28 samples. While experimental and simulated nBUA values were highly correlated (R(2)=0.83), and showed a similar dependence with bone volume fraction, the simulation correctly predicted experimental nBUA values only for low bone volume fraction (BV/TV). Attenuation coefficients were underestimated by the simulation. The absolute difference between experimental and simulated alpha values increased with both BV/TV and frequency. As a function of frequency, the relative difference between experimental and simulated alpha values decreased from 60% around 400 kHz to 30% around 1.2 MHz. Under the assumption that the observed discrepancy expresses the effect of the absorption, our results suggests that nBUA and its dependence on BV/TV can be mostly explained by scattering, and that the relative contribution of scattering to alpha increases with frequency, becoming predominant (>50 %) over absorption for frequencies above 600 kHz.  相似文献

In this article, the effects of uniaxial compressive loading on the ultrasonic scattering from polycrystalline grains are shown for 10 MHz ultrasound in annealed, 1018 steel. The results show a decreasing value of the stress-dependent backscatter coefficient for normal incident ultrasound when the compression loading is perpendicular to the scattering direction. The change due to scattering is about 2 orders of magnitude greater than changes observed by others using ultrasonic wavespeed measurements. It is anticipated that this research can serve as the basis for many methods associated with nondestructive determination of stress in structural materials.  相似文献

The effect of bone structure on ultrasonic attenuation and velocity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The relationship between the structure of bovine cancellous bone, and its ultrasonic propagation parameters is investigated by means of a novel technique involving the application of large static loads, thereby changing the porosity in a controlled manner. The results show that for frequencies in the range 0.4 to 1 MHz, porosity decreases up to 35% are associated with a reduction in attenuation of up to 500%, whereas the velocity increases by roughly 35% for the same changes. The data taken overall suggest that in determining the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient at these frequencies, the amount of material in a given bone section is significantly less important than the distribution of that material.  相似文献

Time-domain speed-of-sound (SOS) measurements in calcaneus are effective predictors of osteoporotic fracture risk. High attenuation and dispersion in bone, however, produce severe distortion of transmitted pulses that leads to ambiguity of time-domain SOS measurements. An equation to predict the effects of system parameters (center frequency and bandwidth), algorithm parameters (pulse arrival-time marker), and bone properties (attenuation coefficient and thickness) on time-domain SOS estimates is derived for media with attenuation that varies linearly with frequency. The equation is validated using data from a bone-mimicking phantom and from 30 human calcaneus samples in vitro. The data suggest that the effects of dispersion are small compared with the effects of frequency-dependent attenuation. The equation can be used to retroactively compensate data. System-related variations in SOS are shown to decrease as the pulse-arrival-time marker is moved toward the pulse center. Therefore, compared with other time-domain measures of SOS, group velocity exhibits the minimum system dependence.  相似文献

In this study a theoretical approach for the estimation of ultrasonic attenuation is proposed. The approach combines two models which take into account both absorption and scattering. Attenuation due to absorption is studied by using the Biot’s analytical model whereas that due to scattering is described by means of a generalized weak scattering model which is formulated for binary mixtures. The scattering model takes account of the density fluctuation of the porous medium in addition to the propagation velocity fluctuation. For the calculation of the attenuation coefficient due to absorption, experimental values have been used to link size of pores to porosity. The theoretical results have been compared with experimental data obtained on bovine cancellous bone samples filled with water. Using an immersion acoustic transmission method, the ultrasonic attenuation has been measured at a frequency range between 0.1 and 1.0 MHz for 12 bovine cancellous bone samples with a porosity range between 40% and 70%. The prediction of attenuation with this model appears to correspond more closely to its experimentally observed behavior. This study indicates that scattering is the predominant mechanism which is responsible for attenuation in trabecular bone. Furthermore, it shows that the density fluctuations contribute significantly to the phenomenon of attenuation and cannot thus be neglected.

An experimental model which can simulate physical changes that occur during aging was developed in order to evaluate the effects of change of mineral content and microstructure on ultrasonic properties of bovine cancellous bone. Timed immersion in hydrochloric acid was used to selectively alter the mineral content. Scanning electron microscopy and histological staining of the acid-treated trabeculae demonstrated a heterogeneous structure consisting of a mineralized core and a demineralized layer. The presence of organic matrix contributed very little to normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA) and speed of sound. All three ultrasonic parameters, speed of sound, nBUA and backscatter coefficient, were sensitive to changes in apparent density of bovine cancellous bone. A two-component model utilizing a combination of two autocorrelation functions (a densely populated model and a spherical distribution) was used to approximate the backscatter coefficient. The predicted attenuation due to scattering constituted a significant part of the measured total attenuation (due to both scattering and absorption mechanisms) for bovine cancellous bone. Linear regression, performed between trabecular thickness values and estimated from the model correlation lengths, showed significant linear correlation, with R(2)=0.81 before and R(2)=0.80 after demineralization. The accuracy of estimation was found to increase with trabecular thickness.  相似文献

Abstract

Contact stresses in high pressure multi-layer cylinders are sometimes measured using ultrasonic technique. As a measure of the contact stresses the coefficient of reflection of ultrasonic waves from the contact interface between two adjacent outer layers is applied. The coefficient of reflection is an involved function of several parameters. Experimental and theoretical investigations show that this function may change non-monotonously with frequency of ultrasonic waves which may lead to an ambiguity of the assumed criterion. In order to check this function for higher frequencies, measurements of the reflection coefficient from a contact interface between plane steel samples were made for the frequencies up to 190 MHz.  相似文献
