In this paper, we present a simple and effective feedback algorithm for endless polarization control that uses two wave plates with rotating axes and variable birefringence. We derive the error function and introduce the principle of the feedback control algorithm, and then we prove its feasibility with simulations.  相似文献

Several Polarization control transducers have appeared on the market, and now automated, endless polarization control systems using these transducers are becoming available. Unfortunately it is not entirely clear what benchmark performance tests a polarization control system must pass, and the polarization disturbances a system must handle are open to some debate. We present quantitative measurements of realistic polarization disturbances and two benchmark tests we have successfully used to evaluate the performance of an automated, endless polarization control system. We use these tests to compare the performance of a system using piezoelectric transducers to that of a system using LiNbO3 transducers.  相似文献

We present a simplified formulae system describing the polarization properties of the quantum cyclotron radiation by a nonrelativistic thermal electron in a very strong magnetic field. In this system, each of the derived quantities, including the Einstein coefficients, the absorption cross sections, and scattering cross sections, as well as the absorption coefficients by plasma, is divided into the perpendicularly and parallelly polarized components. The results, especially the absorption and scattering cross sections of resonant frequency photons, are potentially important in x-ray and γ-ray astronomy, particularly in the study of gamma-ray bursts and pulsars.  相似文献

We study a method generating certain distributions of the degree and state of polarization of a light field across a transverse beam cross-section. We use the introduced polarization encoding scheme to study the distribution of polarization ellipses in a cross-section of a beam generated by superposing two encoded beams, the effects of coherence relation between the input beams on this distribution were theoretically analyzed and illustrated by contour plots of the parameters representing polarization ellipses.  相似文献

We investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, the polarization properties of coherent thermal radiation from thin semiconductor planar layers in a weak external magnetic field. For the Faraday configuration, it is shown that the spectrum of thermal radiation is a superposition of two oscillating spectra which correspond to radiation of electromagnetic waves with right- and left-hand circular polarization.  相似文献

We present a solution to the problem of reflection and transmission of a polarized paraxial light beam at an interface between two homogeneous media by using a two-form amplitude and an extension matrix to represent the vectorial angular spectrum of a three-dimensional (3D) light beam. We derive general formulas for the Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift of the reflected and transmitted beams of a polarized paraxial light beam. The IF shift of two different types of polarized beams is calculated, and the influence of the polarization state and the polarization feature of the vectorial angular spectrum on the IF shift is discussed.  相似文献

We derive a simple model describing steady characteristics of Raman fiber lasers made with polarization maintaining fibers. We show both theoretically and experimentally that this kind of laser simply consists of two independent Raman lasers linearly polarized along the fiber birefringence axes. The output power characteristics of the laser are shown not to be influenced by optical Kerr effect. Finally, we use our model to propose answers to questions recently raised about efficiency of Raman lasers made with polarization maintaining fibers.  相似文献

We investigate the polarization change of partially coherent electromagnetic vortex beams propagating in turbulent atmosphere. It is shown that the polarization of the beams will experience changes, and the changes of the polarization are dependent on the spatial coherence, topological charges of the beams, and the degree of polarization of the source plane and the atmospheric turbulence. We compute the reflected and refracted electromagnetic fields for an ideal semi-infinite (half-space) plasma, as well as the reflection coefficient, by using a general procedure based on equations of motion and electromagnetic potentials. The approach consists of representing the charge disturbances by a displacement field in the positions of the moving particles (electrons). The propagation of an electromagnetic wave in plasma is treated by means of the retarded electromagnetic potentials, and the resulting integral equations are solved. Generalized Fresnel’s relations are thereby obtained for any incidence angle and polarization and the angles of total polarization and total reflection are derived. Bulk and surface plasmon-polariton modes are identified. As it is well known, the field inside the plasma is either damped (evanescent) or propagating (transparency regime), and the reflection coefficient exhibits an abrupt enhancement on passing from the propagating regime to the damped one (total reflection).  相似文献

The Jones matrix formalism has been applied to evaluate the response of an optical system when a non-uniform polarizing pupil is introduced. With this formalism we analyze and experimentally demonstrate the properties of a binary polarization pupil filter having two regions with two orthogonal linear polarization orientations. We first study the case when no analyzer is placed behind the pupil filter, and both, the transversal and the axial behavior are described in terms of the intensity and the local state of polarization. Then it is shown how the response of the optical system can be easily changed through the orientation of an analyzer placed behind the pupil. We experimentally verified the theory using a twisted nematic liquid crystal display, which produces two orthogonal linear polarization states for two different addressed voltages.  相似文献

Employing the Mueller matrix method with polar decomposition, we analyse the polarization rotation (PR) effects in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and demonstrate that the PR angle is linear to the birefringence dependent gain while the average PR coefficient is about 0.625 for the employed SOA. It is further evident that the current and optical intensity dependent PRs rotate reversely around the same axis. Thus we propose an optical-electric synchronous control scheme to obtain orthogonal polarization states with power-equalization, and implement it by a polarization-sensitive SOA. The polarization duration time is about 10 ns which is applicable to high-speed polarization state generation.  相似文献

We applied optogalvanic spectroscopy to observe Zeeman effect in the evanescent wave in Ar gas with the help of a single-mode diode laser. The use of an homogenous external magnetic field enabled us to observe different π and σ Zeeman split lines contribution. We studied two orthogonal directions of external magnetic field and two orthogonal polarizations of the incident wave with respect to the plane of incidence. The analysis of relative line strengths leads to the determination of the polarization state of the evanescent wave.  相似文献

In this paper we study the degree of cross-polarization of a beam-like field whose cross-spectral density matrix is symmetric with respect to the permutation of its spatial arguments. Formulas were derived expressing the degree of cross-polarization in terms of the generalized Stokes parameters. With the help of an uniformly polarized quasi-homogeneous model source, the effect of degree of cross-polarization of a source on the degree of polarization of the radiated beam was demonstrated, that, two sources with same spectral degrees of coherence and polarization but with different degrees of cross-polarization can generate beams that have different spectral degrees of polarization in the far field.  相似文献

We investigate the polarization structure of coherent light, produced by a convergent light beam transmitted through nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cells with different director configurations. Employing solutions to the transmission problem for the case when plane wave propagates through an anisotropic layer, we analyze the arrangement of the topological elements, such as polarization singularities (C points with circular polarization and L lines with linear polarization), saddle points and extrema of polarization azimuth. We observe transformations of the topological structure under the variation of the incident light ellipticity and represent it by corresponding trajectories of topological elements in three-dimensional space. For the cells with uniform and non-uniform director configuration we describe the processes of creation/annihilation of C point pairs, which can be controlled precisely in the case of the cell with non-uniform director. Our experimental measurements for the homeotropically oriented NLC cells are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.  相似文献

An endless polarization stabilization control system is proposed in this letter. The system is independent of transmission data rate and modulation format, and it does not need high-speed circuit to track fast polarization change. Adaptive inertia weight particle swarm optimization algorithm is used and the effectiveness of polarization stabilization control is experimentally verified.  相似文献
