We develop an arithmetic triangle similar to Pascal's triangle. The entries are interpreted in terms of numbers of pairs of nonintersecting paths in the first quadrant. The main applications are results about the Catalan numbers and various random walk problems.  相似文献

Raney’s lemma is often used in a counting argument to prove the formula for (generalized) Catalan numbers. It ensures the existence of “good” cyclic shifts of certain sequences, i.e. cyclic shifts for which all partial sums are positive.We introduce a simple algorithm that finds these cyclic shifts and also those with a slightly weaker property. Moreover it provides simple proofs of lemma’s of Raney type.A similar clustering procedure is also used in a simple proof of a theorem on probabilities of which many well-known results (e.g. on lattice paths and on generalized Catalan numbers) can be derived as corollaries. The theorem generalizes generalized Catalan numbers. In the end it turns out to be equivalent to a formula of Raney.  相似文献

In this paper, we define and study what we call the double Catalan monoid. This monoid is the image of a natural map from the 0-Hecke monoid to the monoid of binary relations. We show that the double Catalan monoid provides an algebraization of the (combinatorial) set of 4321-avoiding permutations and relate its combinatorics to various off-shoots of both the combinatorics of Catalan numbers and the combinatorics of permutations. In particular, we give an algebraic interpretation of the first derivative of the Kreweras involution on Dyck paths, of 4321-avoiding involutions and of recent results of Barnabei et al. on admissible pairs of Dyck paths. We compute a presentation and determine the minimal dimension of an effective representation for the double Catalan monoid. We also determine the minimal dimension of an effective representation for the 0-Hecke monoid.  相似文献

In this paper we use the Catalan matrix power as a tool for deriving identities involving Catalan numbers and hypergeometric functions. For that purpose, we extend earlier investigated relations between the Catalan matrix and the Pascal matrix by inserting the Catalan matrix power and particulary the squared Catalan matrix in those relations. We also pay attention to some relations between Catalan matrix powers of different degrees, which allows us to derive the simplification formula for hypergeometric function 3F2, as well as the simplification formula for the product of the Catalan number and the hypergeometric function 3F2. Some identities involving Catalan numbers, proved by the non-matrix approach, are also given.  相似文献

By combining inverse series relations with binomial convolutions and telescoping method, moments of Catalan numbers are evaluated, which resolves a problem recently proposed by Gutiérrez et al. [J.M. We provide enumerating results for partial knight's paths of a given size. We prove algebraically that zigzag knight's paths of a given size ending on the x-axis are enumerated by the generalized Catalan numbers, and we give a constructive bijection with peakless Motzkin paths of a given length. After enumerating partial knight's paths of a given length, we prove that zigzag knight's paths of a given length ending on the x-axis are counted by the Catalan numbers. A new efficient construction of Diophantine approximations to Catalan’s constant is presented that is based on the direct analysis of the representation of a hypergeometric function with specially chosen half-integer parameters as a series and as a double Euler integral over the unit cube. This allows one to significantly simplify the proofs of Diophantine results available in this domain and substantially extend the capabilities of the method. The sequences of constructed rational approximations are not good enough to prove irrationality, but the results established allow one to compare the quality of various constructions.  相似文献

For each integer k≥1, we define an algorithm which associates to a partition whose maximal value is at most k a certain subset of all partitions. In the case when we begin with a partition λ which is square-bounded, i.e. λ=(λ 1≥⋅⋅⋅≥λ k ) with λ 1=k and λ k =1, applying the algorithm times gives rise to a set whose cardinality is either the Catalan number c k+1 (the self dual case) or twice that Catalan number. The algorithm defines a tree and we study the propagation of the tree, which is not in the isomorphism class of the usual Catalan tree. The algorithm can also be modified to produce a two-parameter family of sets and the resulting cardinalities of the sets are the ballot numbers. Finally, we give a conjecture on the rank of a particular module for the ring of symmetric functions in 2+m variables.  相似文献

We investigate the quotient ring of the ring of formal power series over the closure of the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-symmetric functions. We show that a Hilbert basis of the quotient is naturally indexed by Catalan paths (infinite Dyck paths). We also give a filtration of ideals related to Catalan paths from and above the line . We investigate as well the quotient ring of polynomial ring in variables over the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-symmetric polynomials. We show that the dimension of is bounded above by the th Catalan number.

The Catalan simplicial set ? is known to classify skew-monoidal categories in the sense that a map from ? to a suitably defined nerve of Cat is precisely a skew-monoidal category (Buckley et al. 2014). We extend this result to the case of skew monoidales internal to any monoidal bicategory ??. We then show that monoidal bicategories themselves are classified by maps from ? to a suitably defined nerve of Bicat and extend this result to obtain a definition of skew-monoidal bicategory that aligns with existing theory.  相似文献
