Semifluorinated alkanes (C(n)F(2n+1)C(m)H(2m+1)), short FnHm display local phase separation of mutually incompatible hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon chain moieties, which has been utilized as a structure-forming motif in supramolecular architectures. The packing of semifluorinated alkanes, nominally based on dodecyl subunits, such as perfluoro(dodecyl)dodecane (F12H12) and perfluoro(dodecyl)eicosane (F12H20), as well as a core extended analogue, 1,4-dibromo-2-((perfluoroundecyl)methoxy)-5-(dodecyloxy)benzene) (F11H1-core-H12), was studied at the air/water interface. Langmuir monolayers were investigated by means of neutron reflectivity directly at the air/water interface and scanning force microscopy after transfer to silicon wafers. Narrowly disperse surface micelles formed in all three cases; however, they were found to bear different morphologies with respect to molecular orientation and assembly dimensionality, which gives rise to different hierarchical aggregate topologies. For F12H12, micelles of ca. 30 nm in diameter, composed of several circular or "spherical cap" substructures, were observed and a monolayer model with the fluorocarbon block oriented toward air is proposed. F12H20 molecules formed larger (ca. 50 nm diameter) hexagonally shaped surface micelles that were hexagonally, densely packed, besides more elongated but tightly interlocked wormlike structures. Conversely, F11H1-core-H12 films organized into linear rows of elongated surface micelles with comparable width, but an average length of ca. 400 nm, apparently formed by antiparallel molecular packing.  相似文献

Three commercially available high performance liquid chromatography columns are used in normal phase or quasi-normal phase mode for the separation of gas oil samples. The columns are tested with 20 analytical standards to determine their suitability for separations of petroleum samples and their ability to separate the nitrogen group-types (pyrrole and pyridine) found in petroleum. The columns studied are polymeric hypercrosslinked polystyrene (HGN), a biphenyl phase, and a Chromegabond "DNAP" column from ES Industries. The HGN column separates gas oils based on both ring structure and heteroatom, while the biphenyl phase has low retention of most compounds studied in quasi-normal phase mode. The "DNAP" column is selective for nitrogen-containing compounds, separating them from PAHs as well as oxygen and sulphur compounds. Retention data of standards on all three columns is shown, along with chromatograms of gas oil samples on the HGN and "DNAP" columns.  相似文献

The knowledge of the exact shapes of micelles in various micellar phases found in both lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals is very important to our understanding of the underlying principles of molecular self-assembly. In the current paper we present a detailed structural study of the hexagonal close packed (hcp, space group P63/mmc) micellar phase, observed in the binary mixtures of nonionic surfactant C12EO8 and water. The reconstructed electron density map of the phase shows perfectly spherical micelles. A spherical core/shell model of micelles, which fits the observed X-ray diffraction pattern satisfactorily, is subsequently constructed. The results confirm the previous assumption that the hcp phase consists of spherical close contacting micelles, each of which contains a low-density core of aliphatic parts and a high-density shell of hydrated ethylene oxide segments, with the gaps between the micelles filled by pure water.

Surfactants added to the mobile phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) give rise to a modified stationary phase, due to the adsorption of surfactant monomers. Depending on the surfactant nature (ionic or non-ionic), the coated stationary phase can exhibit a positive net charge, or just change its polarity remaining neutral. Also, micelles in the mobile phase introduce new sites for solute interaction. This affects the chromatographic behavior, especially in the case of basic compounds. Two surfactants of different nature, the non-ionic Brij-35 and the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) added to water or aqueous-organic mixtures, are here compared in the separation of basic compounds (β-blockers and tricyclic antidepressants). The reversible/irreversible adsorption of the monomers of both surfactants on the stationary phase was examined. The changes in the nature of the chromatographic system using different columns and chromatographic conditions were followed based on the changes in retention and peak shape. The study revealed that Brij-35 is suitable for analyzing basic compounds of intermediate polarity, using "green chemistry", since the addition of an organic solvent is not needed and Brij-35 is a biodegradable surfactant. In contrast, RPLC with hydro-organic mixtures or mobile phases containing SDS required high concentrations of organic solvents.  相似文献

In micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate, as the concentration of surfactants increases, the spheroid shape of the micelles changes from almost spherical to ellipsoidal with increasing ratio of half-axes ratio, and further the transition to cylindrical micelles occurs. The micelles in an aqueous solution can directly contact (compact aggregates) or be separated from one another by layers of intermicellar medium (periodical colloid structures). In the latter case, the thickness of the layer can significantly exceed the micelle size, and then no mutual correlation in micelle arrangement is observed. According to the data of small-angle X-ray scattering, the relationship between the surfactant concentration and formation of “quasi-crystalline” micellar structure is nonlinear, which can be due to both micelle aggregation processes and nonuniformity of their structure. The possible influence of ordered micellar structures on the diffusion mobility of micelles is shown.  相似文献

The middle phase microemulsion of Sodium Dodecylsulfonate / 2-Phenyloxyethanol / heptane / Brine was studied at optimal salinity. The fact that structure nonhomogeneity develops upon standing was revealed by cryo-TEM, polarizing microscopy and small angle X-ray diffraction. The structural complexity in this middle phase microemulsion is demonstrated and the cause of structure transformation from spherical micelles to thread-like ones, then to vesicles and to lamellar phase was analyzed using a concentration gradient of surfactant and cosurfactant in the middle phase microemulsion. This experiment also shows the advantages of this new cryo-TEM method.  相似文献

We put forward a theoretical model for the morphological transitions of templated mesoporous materials. These materials consist of a mixture of surfactant molecules and inorganic compounds which evolve dynamically upon mixing to form different morphologies depending on the composition and conditions at which mixing occurs. Our theoretical analysis is based on the assumption that adsorption of the inorganic compounds onto mesoscopic assemblies of surfactant molecules changes the effective interactions between the surfactant molecules, consequently lowering the spontaneous curvature of the surfactant layer and inducing morphological changes in the system. On the basis of a mean field phase diagram, we are able to follow the trajectories of the system starting with different initial conditions, and predict the final morphology of the product. In a typical scenario, the reduction in the spontaneous curvature leads first to a smooth transition from compact spherical micelles to elongated worm-like micelles. In the second stage, the layer of inorganic material coating the micelles gives rise to attractive inter-micellar interactions that eventually induce a collapse of the system into a closely packed hexagonal array of coated cylinders. Other pathways may lead to different structures including disordered bicontinuous and ordered cubic phases. The model is in good qualitative agreement with experimental observations.  相似文献

Phase behavior of mixed sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) aqueous solution was studied. The rheological properties and microstructure were investigated using a rheostat and freeze-fracture technique and are shown to be closely related to the phase behavior. Experimental investigations reveal two symmetrical aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) in the ternary phase diagram of SDS/CTAB/H2O system. In the surfactant rich phase of ATPS or in the adjacent stoichiometric state of ATPS, the system has high viscosity because of its long range ordered structure. Lamellar phase was found in the high viscosity samples in which the cationic and anionic surfactant are in 1: 3 or 3: 1 stoichiometry. In addition, the viscosity has a tendency to increase when salt was added to the solution. The viscosity increase is due to the salt can screen the repulsion between different charged headgroups and thus reduces the effective size of surfactants and facilitates the spherical or rod likes micelles to be transformed to worm-like micelles which can form hexagonal or liquid crystal phases. Large-size salt ions like sodium sulfate (especially organic salt ions) have more significant effect on the surfactant solution viscosity. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

A double-tailed polymerizable (pyrrolylalkyl) ammonium amphiphile has been synthesized, and its interfacial properties and aqueous phase behavior have been studied by polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Krafft temperature is about 27 degrees C, and the critical micelle concentration at 40 degrees C is about 1 mM, as obtained from surface tension measurements, potentiometry, and isothermal titration calorimetry. The lyotropic behavior of the surfactant is found to be of a complex nature. At concentrations higher than the micellar (L1) region, two mesophases have been identified: a second isotropic (L2) phase, which is probably micellar but not fully miscible with water, and a lamellar (L(alpha)) phase, showing interesting alignment properties. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis of the mesophases has been evaluated in terms of a model of spherical micelles, which describes a mutual arrangement by a structure factor derived from a hard-sphere potential (Percus-Yevick, "PY", approach). Interest in the comprehensive phase behavior of the polymerizable surfactant is based on the desire to integrate the system into a composite material to obtain potentially conducting self-assembled hybrid mesostructures.  相似文献

Mixed micelle of protonated or deuterated sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS and SDSd25, respectively) and poly(propylene oxide) methacrylate (PPOMA) are studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). In all the cases the scattering curves exhibit a peak whose position changes with the composition of the system. The main parameters which characterize mixed micelles, i.e., aggregation numbers of SDS and PPOMA, geometrical dimensions of the micelles and degree of ionisation are evaluated from the analysis of the SANS curves. The position q(max) of the correlation peak can be related to the average aggregation numbers of SDS-PPOMA and SDSd25-PPOMA mixed micelles. It is found that the aggregation number of SDS decreases upon increasing the weight ratio PPOMA/SDS (or SDSd25). The isotopic combination, which uses the "contrast effect" between the two micellar systems, has allowed us to determine the mixed micelle composition. Finally, the SANS curves were adjusted using the RMSA for the structure factor S(q) of charged spherical particles and the form factor P(q) of spherical core-shell particle. This analysis confirms the particular core-shell structure of the SDS-PPOMA mixed micelle, i.e., a SDS "core" micelle surrounded by the shell formed by PPOMA macromonomers. The structural parameters of mixed micelles obtained from the analysis of the SANS data are in good agreement with those determined previously by conductimetry and fluorescence studies.  相似文献

The self-assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(l-lysine) (PS-PLLys·HCl) copolymers with different block lengths has been studied in toluene. The obtained spherical micelles exhibit size variations upon addition of acids or bases, as indicated by light and neutron scattering studies. It is shown that pyridine induces a shrinking of the polystyrene chains in the corona region of the micelles, decreasing the aggregate solvent interface. The addition of benzoic acid, on the other hand, leads to a swelling of the copolymer micelles proportional to the molar fraction of polypeptide. This behavior suggests a selective permeability of the PS-PLLys micelles and the possibility to encapsulate organic compounds in toluene depending on their chemical nature.  相似文献

SANS from Pluronic P85 in d-water   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been used to investigate Pluronic P85 (EO26PO40EO26) copolymer in deuterated water. A range of P85 fractions were measured for a wide sample temperature window. A rich phase behavior is reported. Unimers were observed below the critical micelle formation condition. At fixed P85 fraction, a number of micellar phases were observed upon increasing temperature; first spherical micelles, then cylindrical micelles, then lamellar micelles. At the highest temperature, a demixed lamellae phase was observed. Analysis of the SANS data consisted in fits to an empirical Guinier-Porod model that was appropriate for data fitting in the various phases at low P85 fractions. When the P85 fraction increased, an inter-particle structure factor was included to analyze SANS data from concentrated spherical micelles. At high P85 fractions, paracrystalline structures were observed as evidenced by an enhanced inter-particle interaction peak. A phase diagram for P85/d-water was obtained showing the various phases. Focusing on the spherical micelles phase for one sample composition, a core-shell model was used to fit SANS data and obtain sizes and scattering length densities. Using material balance equations, information such as the aggregation number (i.e., number of Pluronic macromolecules per micelle) and the number of hydration water molecules in the shell region are determined.  相似文献

The transition from spherical to globular and cylindrical equilibrium modifications of micelles in solutions of nonionic surfactants is numerically studied within the framework of the droplet model of molecular aggregates. Two branches of the curve of micelle aggregation work are plotted as a function of aggregation numbers. One of these curves corresponds to the globular micelles; the other, to spherocylindrical micelles. At aggregation numbers corresponding to the limiting spherical packing, both the globules and spherocylinders are transformed into the limiting sphere. It is shown that the ratio between the branches depends on the dimensionless parameter characterizing the ratio of electrostatic and surface contributions to the aggregation work. It is elucidated that, at certain values of this parameter and surfactant monomer concentration in solution, in addition to the maximum in the region of submicellar aggregates for spherical micelles, the second maximum arises on the curve of aggregation work as a function of aggregation numbers in the region of transition to spherocylindrical micelles. The appearance of an additional maximum is shown to be caused by the sum of surface, electrostatic, and concentration contributions to the aggregation work and is not directly related to the conformational contribution to the aggregation work.__________Translated from Kolloidnyi Zhurnal, Vol. 67, No. 3, 2005, pp. 363–376.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Kshevetskiy, Shchekin.  相似文献

Vesicles are large aggregates of surfactant monomers consisting of a spherical bilayer surrounding an internal cavity of solvent. The bilayer structure allows vesicles to be attractive models for the study of various transmembrane and binding processes. The use of thermodynamically stable vesicles (TSV) formed from oppositely charged surfactants for use as a pseudostationary phase in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC) was first accomplished using dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulfate (DTAB/SDS). Surfactant vesicles have demonstrated enhanced separation characteristics compared to conventional micelles in EKC, although only investigated in aqueous media. Organic modifiers have been widely studied and used in EKC to enhance separation conditions. In this study, vesicles formed from cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium octyl sulfate (CTAB/SOS) were investigated in the presence of "class I and II" organic modifiers. Electrophoretic and chromatographic parameters were examined as well as linear solvation energy relationship analysis (LSER) to characterize the effects of the modifiers on retention and selectivity in EKC. LSER analysis is a useful way to quantitatively investigate solute/solvent interactions responsible for retention and selectivity.  相似文献

The interaction of daunomycin with sodium dodecyl sulfate and Triton X-100 micelles was investigated as a model for the hydrophobic contribution to the free energy of DNA intercalation reactions. Measurements of visible absorbance, fluorescence lifetime, steady-state fluorescence emission intensity, and fluorescence anisotropy indicate that the anthraquinone ring partitions into the hydrophobic micelle interior. Fluorescence quenching experiments using both steady-state and lifetime measurements demonstrate reduced accessibility of daunomycin in sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles to the anionic quencher iodide and to the neutral quencher acrylamide. Quenching of daunomycin fluorescence by iodide in Triton X-100 micelles was similar to that seen with free daunomycin. Studies of the energetics of the interaction of daunomycin with micelles by fluorescence and absorbance titration methods and by isothermal titration calorimetry in the presence of excess micelles revealed that association with sodium dodecyl sulfate and Triton X-100 micelles is driven by a large negative enthalpy. Association of the drug with both types of micelles also has a favorable entropic contribution, which is larger in magnitude for Triton X-100 micelles than for sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles. The thermodynamic profile for the interaction of daunomycin with both types of micelles is characteristic of the "nonclassical" hydrophobic effect. The enthalpy for the interaction of daunomycin with sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles increases nonlinearly with temperature, indicating a positive (and temperature dependent) heat capacity change. The binding isotherm for daunomycin association with sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles was cooperative, with a Hill coefficient of 1.6. The cooperative behavior and the positive heat capacity change suggest that the drug alters micelle size or imposes order on the hydrocarbon interior of the micelle.  相似文献

Evaluation of phase transitions in a series of hydrogen sulfates (Rb3H(SO4)2, (NH4)3H(SO4)2, K3 H(SO4)2, and Na3H(SO4)2) based on the single-crystal structure analysis has revealed the exact nature of such transitions and has sorted out the various ambiguities involved in earlier literature. Rb3H(SO4)2 at 293 K is C2/c. It is isostructural to its ammonium analogue, (NH4)3H(SO4)2, at room temperature. However, the variable temperature single-crystal diffraction studies indicate that the phase transition mechanism is different. When cooled to 100 K, the structure of Rb3H(SO4)2 remains C2/c. When heated to 350 K, it transforms to C2/m (with double the volume at room temperature), which changes to C2/c (with 4 times the volume at room temperature) at 425 K. The high-temperature (420 K) structural phase transition in (NH4)3H(SO4)2 is shown to be Rm. The structure of Na3H(SO4)2 remains invariant (P21/c) throughout the range of 100-500 K except for the usual contraction of the unit cell at 100 K and expansion at 500 K. The structural phase transitions with temperature for the compound K3H(SO4)2 are very different from those claimed in earlier literature. The hydrogen atom participating in the crucial hydrogen bond joining the two sulfate tetrahedra controls the structural phase transitions at low temperatures in all four compounds. The distortion of the SO4 tetrahedra and the coordination around the metal atom sites control the phase evolution in the Rb compound, while the Na and K analogues show no phase transitions at high temperature, and the NH4 system transforms to a higher symmetry space group resulting in a disorder of the sulfate moiety.  相似文献

A series of polylactide-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLA-PEG) block copolymers with a high PEG fraction were synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization of L- or D-lactide in the presence of mono- or dihydroxyl PEG using nontoxic zinc lactate as a catalyst. Micelles were then prepared by direct dissolution of the obtained water-soluble copolymers in an aqueous medium without heating or using any organic solvents. Large anisotropic micelles instead of conventional spherical ones were observed from a transmission electron microscopy examination. Various parameters influencing the structure of the novel micelles were considered, such as the copolymer chain structure, molar mass, PEG fraction, copolymer concentration, and stereocomplexation between L- and D-PLA blocks. Anisotropic micelles were obtained for both diblock and triblock copolymers but vanished with increasing molar mass of the copolymers. The morphology of micelles strongly depends on the PEG fraction. Anisotropic micelles were found only in an intermediate EO/LA ratio range in which a higher PEG fraction leads to a higher length/width ratio of micelles. Stereocomplexation between L- and D-PLA or a lower concentration disfavors the formation of anisotropic micelles. Under appropriate concentrations, spherical and anisotropic micelles coexist in the same micellar solution. Moreover, it was found that anisotropic micelles are susceptible to further self-assemble into more organized complex aggregates. Similar results were obtained from light scattering and aqueous gel permeation chromatography measurements. A novel model is proposed to explain the formation of anisotropic micelles and the effects of various parameters on the structure of micelles in an aqueous medium.  相似文献

The first example is presented here of an amiphiphilic block copolymer synthesized by mechanochemical solid-state polymerization and used to form polymeric micelles. A model amphiphilic block copolymer was synthesized first, possessing galactose as a hydrophilic side chain and theophylline as a hydrophobic side chain, by mechanochemical solid-state polymerization. The resulting copolymer had a narrow molecular weight distribution. Polymeric micelle formation was subsequently carried out with the copolymer by a dialysis method. To gain insight into the physicochemical properties of the polymeric micelle, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements were performed. A narrow distribution of diameters was observed in the polymeric micelle solution, and these micelles were disrupted by the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It was also confirmed by DLS measurements that the polymeric micelles were spherical. These results suggested that the block copolymer synthesized by mechanochemical solid-state polymerization was as suitable for the preparation of polymeric micelles as materials obtained by living polymerization.  相似文献
