A low barrier in the reaction pathway between the double Rydberg isomer of OH(3) (-) and a hydride-water complex indicates that the former species is more difficult to isolate and characterize through anion photoelectron spectroscopy than the well known double Rydberg anion (DRA), tetrahedral NH(4) (-). Electron propagator calculations of vertical electron detachment energies (VEDEs) and isosurface plots of the electron localization function disclose that the transition state's electronic structure more closely resembles that of the DRA than that of the hydride-water complex. Possible stabilization of the OH(3) (-) DRA through hydrogen bonding or ion-dipole interactions is examined through calculations on O(2)H(5) (-) species. Three O(2)H(5) (-) minima with H(-)(H(2)O)(2), hydrogen-bridged, and DRA-molecule structures resemble previously discovered N(2)H(7) (-) species and have well separated VEDEs that may be observable in anion photoelectron spectra.  相似文献

Photoelectron spectroscopy is combined with ab initio calculations to elucidate the structure and chemical bonding of a series of MAl(6)(-) (M = Li, Na, K, Cu, and Au) bimetallic clusters. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra were obtained for MAl(6)(-) (M = Li, Na, Cu, and Au) at several photon energies. The ab initio calculations showed that all of the MAl(6)(-) clusters can be viewed as an M(+) cation interacting with an Al(6)(2-) dianion. Al(6)(2-) was found to possess an O(h) ground-state structure, and all of the MAl(6)(-) clusters possess a C(3v) ground-state structure derived from the O(h) Al(6)(2-). Careful comparison between the photoelectron spectral features and the ab initio one-electron detachment energies allows us to establish firmly the C(3v)ground-state structures for the MAl(6)(-) clusters. A detailed molecular orbital (MO) analysis is conducted for Al(6)(2-) and compared with Al(3)(-). It was shown that Al(6)(2-) can be considered as the fusion of two Al(3)(-) units. We further found that the preferred occupation of those MOs derived from the sums of the empty 2e' MOs of Al(3)(-), rather than those derived from the differences between the occupied 2a(1)' and 2a(2)' ' MOs of Al(3)(-), provides the key bonding interactions for the fusion of the two Al(3)(-) into Al(6)(2-). Because there are only four bonding MOs (one pi and three sigma MOs), an analysis of resonance structures was performed for the O(h)Al(6)(2-). It is shown that every face of the Al(6)(2-) octahedron still possesses both pi- and sigma-aromaticity, analogous to Al(3)(-), and that in fact Al(6)(2-) can be viewed to possess three-dimensional pi- and sigma-aromaticity with a large resonance stabilization.  相似文献

It is known that silicon can be successfully replaced by germanium atoms in the synthesis of imogolite nanotubes, leading to shorter and larger AlGe nanotubes. Beside the change in morphology, two characteristics of the AlGe nanotube synthesis were recently discovered. AlGe imogolite nanotubes can be synthesized at much higher concentrations than AlSi imogolite. AlGe imogolite exists in the form of both single-walled (SW) and double-walled (DW) nanotubes, whereas DW AlSi imogolites have never been observed. In this article, we give details on the physicochemical control over the SW or DW AlGe imogolite structure. For some conditions, an almost 100% yield of SW or DW nanotubes is demonstrated. We propose a model for the formation of SW or DW AlGe imogolite, which also explains why DW AlSi imogolites or higher wall numbers for AlGe imogolite are not likely to be formed.  相似文献

Thiolate-protected gold nanoparticles have been found recently to be coordinated by the so-called "staple" bonding motifs, consisting of quasi-linear [RS-Au-SR] and V-shaped [RS-Au-(SR)-Au-SR] units, which carry a negative charge formally. Using photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in conjunction with ab initio calculations, we have investigated the electronic structure and chemical bonding of the simplest staples with R = CH(3): Au(SCH(3))(2)(-) and Au(2)(SCH(3))(3)(-), which were produced by electrospray ionization. PES data of the two Au-thiolate complexes are obtained both at room temperature (RT) and 20 K. The temperature-dependent study reveals significant spectral broadening at RT, in agreement with theoretical predictions of multiple conformations due to the different orientations of the -SCH(3) groups. The Au-S bonds in Au(n)(SCH(3))(n+1)(-) (n = 1, 2) are shown to be covalent via a variety of chemical bonding analyses. The strong Au-thiolate bonding and the stability of the Au-thiolate complexes are consistent with their ubiquity as staples for gold nanoparticles and on gold surfaces.  相似文献

The electronic and structural properties of a series of boron oxide clusters, B(5)O(-), B(6)O(2) (-), and B(7)O(3) (-), are studied using photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional calculations. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained, yielding electron affinities of 3.45, 3.54, and 4.94 eV for the corresponding neutrals, B(5)O, B(6)O(2), and B(7)O(3), respectively. Structural optimizations show that these oxide clusters can be formulated as B(4)(BO)(n) (-) (n = 1-3), which involve boronyls coordinated to a planar rhombic B(4) cluster. Chemical bonding analyses indicate that the B(4)(BO)(n) (-) clusters are all aromatic species with two π electrons.  相似文献

The ground states of FeS(2) and FeS(2)(-), and several low-lying excited electronic states of FeS(2) that are responsible for the FeS(2)(-) photoelectron spectrum, are calculated. At the B3LYP level an open, quasi-linear [SFeS](-) conformation is found as the most stable structure, which is confirmed at the ab initio CASPT2 computational level. Both the neutral and the anionic unsaturated complexes possess high-spin electronic ground states. For the first time a complete assignment of the photoelectron spectrum of FeS(2)(-) is proposed. The lowest energy band in this spectrum is ascribed to an electron detachment from the two highest-lying 3dpi antibonding orbitals (with respect to the iron-sulfur bonding) of iron. The next-lowest experimental band corresponds to an electron removal from nonbonding, nearly pure sulfur orbitals. The two highest bands in the spectra are assigned as electron detachments from pi and sigma bonding mainly sulfur orbitals.  相似文献

The concept of aromaticity was first invented to account for the unusual stability of planar organic molecules with 4n + 2 delocalized pi electrons. Recent photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on all-metal MAl(4)(-) systems with an approximate square planar Al(4)(2-) unit and an alkali metal led to the suggestion that Al(4)(2-) is aromatic. The square Al(4)(2-) structure was recognized as the prototype of a new family of aromatic molecules. High-level ab initio calculations based on extrapolating CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVxZ (x = D, T, and Q) to the complete basis set limit were used to calculate the first electron affinities of Al(n)(), n = 0-4. The calculated electron affinities, 0.41 eV (n = 0), 1.51 eV (n = 1), 1.89 eV (n = 3), and 2.18 eV (n = 4), are all in excellent agreement with available experimental data. On the basis of the high-level ab initio quantum chemical calculations, we can estimate the resonance energy and show that it is quite large, large enough to stabilize Al(4)(2-) with respect to Al(4). Analysis of the calculated results shows that the aromaticity of Al(4)(2-) is unusual and different from that of C(6)H(6). Particularly, compared to the usual (1-fold) pi aromaticity in C(6)H(6), which may be represented by two Kekulé structures sharing a common sigma bond framework, the square Al(4)(2-) structure has an unusual "multiple-fold" aromaticity determined by three independent delocalized (pi and sigma) bonding systems, each of which satisfies the 4n + 2 electron counting rule, leading to a total of 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 potential resonating Kekulé-like structures without a common sigma frame. We also discuss the 2-fold aromaticity (pi plus sigma) of the Al(3)(-) anion, which can be represented by 3 x 3 = 9 potential resonating Kekulé-like structures, each with two localized chemical bonds. These results lead us to suggest a general approach (applicable to both organic and inorganic molecules) for examining delocalized chemical bonding. The possible electronic contribution to the aromaticity of a molecule should not be limited to only one particular delocalized bonding system satisfying a certain electron counting rule of aromaticity. More than one independent delocalized bonding system can simultaneously satisfy the electron counting rule of aromaticity, and therefore, a molecular structure could have multiple-fold aromaticity.  相似文献

Small boron clusters have been shown to be planar from a series of combined photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies. However, a number of boron clusters are quasiplanar, such as B(7)(-) and B(12)(-). To elucidate the nature of the nonplanarity in these clusters, we have investigated the electronic structure and chemical bonding of two isoelectronic Al-doped boron clusters, AlB(6)(-) and AlB(11)(-). Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra were obtained for AlB(6)(-), resulting in an accurate electron affinity (EA) for AlB(6) of 2.49 ± 0.03 eV. The photoelectron spectra of AlB(11)(-) revealed the presence of two isomers with EAs of 2.16 ± 0.03 and 2.33 ± 0.03 eV, respectively. Global minimum structures of both AlB(6)(-) and AlB(11)(-) were established from unbiased searches and comparison with the experimental data. The global minimum of AlB(6)(-) is nearly planar with a central B atom and an AlB(5) six membered ring, in contrast to that of B(7)(-), which possesses a C(2v) structure with a large distortion from planarity. Two nearly degenerate structures were found for AlB(11)(-) competing for the global minimum, in agreement with the experimental observation. One of these isomers with the lower EA can be viewed as substituting a peripheral B atom by Al in B(12)(-), which has a bowl shape with a B(9) outer ring and an out-of-plane inner B(3) triangle. The second isomer of AlB(11)(-) can be viewed as an Al atom interacting with a B(11)(-) cluster. Both isomers of AlB(11)(-) are perfectly planar. It is shown that Al substitution of a peripheral B atom in B(7)(-) and B(12)(-) induces planarization by slightly expanding the outer ring due to the larger size of Al.  相似文献

Anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations are combined to probe the structures and chemical bonding of two boron-rich oxide clusters, B(5)O(3)(-) and B(6)O(3)(-), which are shown to be appropriately formulated as B(2)(BO)(3)(-) and B(3)(BO)(3)(-), respectively. The anion clusters are found to each possess a bridging η(2)-BO group, as well as two terminal BO groups and are analogs of B(2)H(3)(-) and B(3)H(3)(-). This finding advances the boronyl chemistry and helps establish the isolobal analogy between boron-rich oxide clusters and boranes.  相似文献

All-inorganic colloidal nanocrystals were synthesized by replacing organic capping ligands on chemically synthesized nanocrystals with metal-free inorganic ions such as S(2-), HS(-), Se(2-), HSe(-), Te(2-), HTe(-), TeS(3)(2-), OH(-) and NH(2)(-). These simple ligands adhered to the NC surface and provided colloidal stability in polar solvents. The versatility of such ligand exchange has been demonstrated for various semiconductor and metal nanocrystals of different size and shape. We showed that the key aspects of Pearson's hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle, originally developed for metal coordination compounds, can be applied to the bonding of molecular species to the nanocrystal surface. The use of small inorganic ligands instead of traditional ligands with long hydrocarbon tails facilitated the charge transport between individual nanocrystals and opened up interesting opportunities for device integration of colloidal nanostructures.  相似文献

The Au-O and Au-S interactions are essential in nanogold catalysis and nanotechnology, for which monogold oxide and sulfide clusters serve as the simplest molecular models. We report a combined photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio study on AuO (-) and AuO 2 (-) and their valent isoelectronic AuS (-) and AuS 2 (-) species to probe their electronic structure and to elucidate the Au-O and Au-S chemical bonding. Vibrationally resolved spectra were obtained at different photon energies, providing a wealth of electronic structure information for each species. Similar spectra were observed for AuO (-) and AuS (-) and for the linear OAuO (-) and SAuS (-) species. A bent isomer was also observed as Au(S 2) (-) in the AuS 2 (-) spectra, whereas a similar Au(O 2) (-) complex was not observed in the case of AuO 2 (-). High-level ab initio calculations were conducted to aid spectral assignments and provide insight into the chemical bonding in the AuX (-) and AuX 2 (-) molecules. Excellent agreement is achieved between the calculated electronic excitations and the observed spectra. Configuration interactions and spin-orbit couplings were shown to be important and were necessary to achieve good agreement between theory and experiment. Strong covalent bonding was found in both the AuX (-) and the XAuX (-) species with multiple bonding characters. While Au(S 2) (-) was found to be a low-lying isomer with a significant binding energy, Au(O 2) (-) was shown to be unbound consistent with the experimental observation. The latter is understood in the context of the size-dependent reactivity of Au n (-) clusters with O 2.  相似文献

We report 355 and 532 nm photoelectron imaging results for H(-)(NH(3))(n) and NH(2)(-)(NH(3))(n), n = 0-5. The photoelectron spectra are consistent with the electrostatic picture of a charged solute (H(-) or NH(2)(-)) solvated by n ammonia molecules. For a given number of solvent molecules, the NH(2)(-) core anion is stabilized more strongly than H(-), yet the photoelectron angular distributions for solvated H(-) deviate more strongly from the unsolvated limit than those for solvated NH(2)(-). Hence, we conclude that solvation effects on photoelectron angular distributions are dependent on the electronic structure of the anion, i.e., the type of the initial orbital of the photodetached electron, rather than merely the strength of solvation interactions. We also find evidence of photofragmentation and autodetachment of NH(2)(-)(NH(3))(2-5), as well as autodetachment of H(-)(NH(3))(5), upon 532 nm excitation of these species.  相似文献

The hydrated nucleoside anions, uridine(-)(H(2)O)(n=0-2), cytidine(-)(H(2)O)(n=0-2), and thymidine(-)(H(2)O)(n=0,1), have been prepared in beams and studied by anion photoelectron spectroscopy in order to investigate the effects of a microhydrated environment on parent nucleoside anions. Vertical detachment energies (VDEs) were measured for all eight anions, and from these, estimates were made for five sequential anion hydration energies. Excellent agreement was found between our measured VDE value for thymidine(-)(H(2)O)(1) and its calculated value in the companion article by S. Kim and H. F. Schaefer III.  相似文献

In a previous communication, we showed that a single Au atom behaves like H in its bonding to Si in a series of Si-Au clusters, SiAu(n) (n = 2-4) (Kiran et al. Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2004, 43, 2125). In this article, we show that the H analogy of Au is more general. We find that the chemical bonding and potential energy surfaces of two disilicon Au clusters, Si(2)Au(2) and Si(2)Au(4), are analogous to Si(2)H(2) and Si(2)H(4), respectively. Photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations are used to investigate the geometrical and electronic structures of Si(2)Au(2)(-), Si(2)Au(4)(-), and their neutral species. The most stable structures for both Si(2)Au(2) and Si(2)Au(2)(-) are found to be C(2)(v), in which each Au bridges the two Si atoms. For Si(2)Au(4)(-), two nearly degenerate dibridged structures in a cis (C(2)(h)) and a trans (C(2)(v)) configuration are found to be the most stable isomers. However, in the neural potential energy surface of Si(2)Au(4), a monobridged isomer is the global minimum. The ground-state structures of Si(2)Au(2)(-) and Si(2)Au(4)(-) are confirmed by comparing the computed vertical detachment energies with the experimental data. The various stable isomers found for Si(2)Au(2) and Si(2)Au(4) are similar to those known for Si(2)H(2) and Si(2)H(4), respectively. Geometrical and electronic structure comparisons with the corresponding silicon hydrides are made to further establish the isolobal analogy between a gold atom and a hydrogen atom.  相似文献

The combination of CH(3)CN solutions of [N(CH(3))(4)][F] and a mixture of cis- and trans-[N(CH(3))(4)][IO(2)F(4)] produces the novel trans-IO(2)F(5)(2)(-) anion. Under the given conditions, only the trans-IO(2)F(4)(-) anion acts as a fluoride ion acceptor, thus allowing the separation of isomerically pure, soluble cis-IO(2)F(4)(-) from insoluble trans-IO(2)F(5)(2)(-). The trans-IO(2)F(5)(2)(-) and cis-IO(2)F(4)(-) anions were characterized by infrared and Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations at the LDFT and HF levels of theory. The trans-IO(2)F(5)(2)(-) anion has a pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with the two oxygen atoms occupying the axial positions. It represents the first example of a heptacoordinated main group AO(2)X(5) species and completes the series of pentagonal-bipyramidal iodine fluoride and oxide fluoride species. The geometries of the pentagonal-bipyramidal series IO(2)F(5)(2)(-), IOF(5)(2)(-), IF(5)(2)(-), IOF(6)(-), IF(6)(-), and IF(7) and the corresponding octahedral series IO(2)F(4)(-), IOF(4)(-), IF(4)(-), IOF(5), IF(5), and IF(6)(+) were calculated by identical methods. It is shown how the ionic charge, the oxidation state of the iodine atom, the coordination number, and the replacement of fluorine ligands by either an oxygen ligand or a free valence electron pair influence the stuctures and bonding of these species.  相似文献

Using photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in the gas phase, we investigated the electronic structure and chemical bonding of six anionic [Mo(V)O](3+) complexes, [MoOX(4)](-) (where X = Cl (1), SPh (2), and SPh-p-Cl (3)), [MoO(edt)(2)](-) (4), [MoO(bdt)(2)](-) (5), and [MoO(bdtCl(2))(2)](-) (6) (where edt = ethane-1,2-dithiolate, bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate, and bdtCl(2) = 3,6-dichlorobenzene-1,2-dithiolate). The gas-phase PES data revealed a wealth of new electronic structure information about the [Mo(V)O](3+) complexes. The energy separations between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and HOMO-1 were observed to be dependent on the O-Mo-S-C(alpha) dihedral angles and ligand types, being relatively large for the monodentate ligands, 1.32 eV for Cl and 0.78 eV for SPh and SPhCl, compared to those of the bidentate dithiolate complexes, 0.47 eV for edt and 0.44 eV for bdt and bdtCl(2). The threshold PES feature in all six species is shown to have the same origin and is due to detaching the single unpaired electron in the HOMO, mainly of Mo 4d character. This result is consistent with previous theoretical calculations and is verified by comparison with the PES spectra of two d(0) complexes, [VO(bdt)(2)](-) and [VO(bdtCl(2))(2)](-). The observed PES features are interpreted on the basis of theoretical calculations and previous spectroscopic studies in the condensed phase.  相似文献

The photodetachment of the O(2)(-).H(2)O cluster anion at 780 and 390 nm is investigated in comparison with O(2)(-) using photoelectron imaging spectroscopy. Despite the pronounced shift in the photoelectron spectra, the monohydration has little effect on the photoelectron angular distributions: for a given wavelength and electron kinetic energy (eKE) range, the O(2)(-).H(2)O angular distributions are quantitatively similar to those for bare O(2)(-). This observation confirms that the excess electron in O(2)(-).H(2)O retains the overall character of the 2ppi(g) HOMO of O(2)(-). The presence of H(2)O does not affect significantly the partial wave composition of the photodetached electrons at a given eKE. An exception is observed for slow electrons, where O(2)(-).H(2)O exhibits a faster rise in the photodetachment signal with increasing eKE, as compared to O(2)(-). The possible causes of this anomaly are (i) the long-range charge-dipole interaction between the departing electron and the neutral O(2).H(2)O skeleton affecting the slow-electron dynamics; and (ii) the s wave contributions to the photodetachment, which are dipole-forbidden for pi(g)(-1) transitions in O(2)(-), but formally allowed in O(2)(-).H(2)O due to lower symmetry of the cluster anion and the corresponding HOMO.  相似文献

The structure, bonding and energetics of B(2)AlH(n)(m) (n = 3-6, m = -2 to +1) are compared with corresponding homocyclic boron, aluminum analogues and BAl(2)H(n)(m) using density functional theory (DFT). Divalent to hexacoordinated boron and aluminum atoms are found in these species. The geometrical and bonding pattern in B(2)AlH(4)(-) is similar to that for B(2)SiH(4). Species with lone pairs on the divalent boron and aluminum atoms are found to be minima on the potential energy surface of B(2)AlH(3)(2-). A dramatic structural diversity is observed in going from B(3)H(n)(m) to B(2)AlH(n)(m), BAl(2)H(n)(m) and Al(3)H(n)(m) and this is attributable to the preference of lower coordination on aluminum, higher coordination on boron and the higher multicenter bonding capability of boron. The most stable structures of B(3)H(6)(+), B(2)AlH(5) and BAl(2)H(4)(-) and the trihydrogen bridged structure of Al(3)H(3)(2-) show an isostructural relationship, indicating the isolobal analogy between trivalent boron and divalent aluminum anion.  相似文献

The potential energy surface (PES) of O(2)(-)(H(2)O) is investigated by varying the interoxygen distance of O(2)(-) via ab initio calculations with a large basis set. Although two stationary points, C(s) and C(2v) conformers, are found along the interoxygen-distance coordinate, only the C(s) conformer is identified as a minimum-energy species. We find a critical distance, r(c), separating these two conformers in the PES. The C(s) conformer prevails at interoxygen distances of O(2)(-) that are less than r(c), while the C(2v) conformer dominates at the distances larger than r(c). The structural features of these two conformers are also discussed. Although the water deformation energy is shown to be the stabilization source responsible for the prevalence of the C(s) cluster conformer at the interoxygen distances of O(2)(-) less than r(c), the ionic hydrogen bonding is the major driving force for transformation of the water binding motif from C(s) to C(2v) when the interoxygen distance of O(2)(-) increases.  相似文献

The structures and the electronic properties of two Al-doped boron clusters, AlB(9)(-) and AlB(10)(-), were investigated via joint photoelectron spectroscopy and high-level ab initio study. The photoelectron spectra of both anions are relatively broad and have no vibrational structure. The geometrical structures were established by unbiased global minimum searches using the Coalescence Kick method and comparison between the experimental and calculated vertical electron detachment energies. The results show that both clusters have quasi-planar structures and that the Al atom is located at the periphery. Chemical bonding analysis revealed that the global minimum structures of both anions can be described as doubly (σ- and π-) aromatic systems. The nona-coordinated wheel-type structure of AlB(9)(-) was found to be a relatively high-lying isomer, while a similar structure for the neutral AlB(9) cluster was previously shown to be either a global minimum or a low-lying isomer.  相似文献
