The adsorption and surface reaction of cyanogen on clean and oxygen covered Cu(111) have been investigated. From electron energy loss measurements, thermal desorption spectroscopy and electron beam effects in Auger spectroscopy, it is proposed that cyanogen adsorbs dissociatively on Cu(111) at 300 K. The activation energy for the desorption was calculated to be 180 kJ/mol. Cyanogen adsorption onto oxygen predosed Cu(111) is inferred to produce the NCO surface species. This interpretation was aided by data of electron energy loss measurements and from HNCO adsorption onto Cu(111) at 300 K. A reaction began in the co-adsorbed layer above 400 K, yielding CO2 and N2.  相似文献

The interaction of HNCO with oxygen dosed Rh(111) surface has been investigated by Auger electron, electron energy loss and thermal desorption spectroscopy. The presence of adsorbed oxygen exerted no apparent influence on the weakly adsorbed HNCO (Tp = 130 K). It promoted, however, the dissociative adsorption of HNCO by forming a strong O—H bond which prevented the associative desorption of HNCO. As a result no H2 and NH3 formation occurred, in contrast with the clean surface, and the surface concentration of irreversibly bonded NCO was also increased. New products of the surface reaction were H2O and CO2, in addition to CO and N2 observed on a clean surface. From the behavior of the losses characteristic for the adsorbed NCO it appeared that the preadsorbed oxygen exerted a significant stabilizing effect on the NCO bonded to the Rh.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO, O2, and H2O was studied on both the (111) and [6(111) × (100)] crystal faces of iridium. The techniques used were LEED, AES, and thermal desorption. Marked differences were found in surface structures and heats of adsorption on these crystal faces. Oxygen is adsorbed in a single bonding state on the (111) face. On the stepped iridium surface an additional bonding state with a higher heat of adsorption was detected which can be attributed to oxygen adsorbed at steps. On both (111) and stepped iridium crystal faces the adsorption of oxygen at room temperature produced a (2 × 1) surface structure. Two surface structures were found for CO adsorbed on Ir(111); a (√3 × √3)R30° at an exposure of 1.5–2.5 L and a (2√3 × 2√3)R30° at higher coverage. No indication for ordering of adsorbed CO was found on the Ir(S)-[6(111) × (100)] surface. No significant differences in thermal desorption spectra of CO were found on these two faces. H2O is not adsorbed at 300 K on either iridium crystal face. The reaction of CO with O2 was studied on Ir(111) and the results are discussed. The influence of steps on the adsorption behaviour of CO and O2 on iridium and the correlation with the results found previously on the same platinum crystal faces are discussed.  相似文献

The interaction of O2, CO2, CO, C2H4 AND C2H4O with Ag(110) has been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). For adsorbed oxygen the EELS and TPD signals are measured as a function of coverage (θ). Up to θ = 0.25 the EELS signal is proportional to coverage; above 0.25 evidence is found for dipole-dipole interaction as the EELS signal is no longer proportional to coverage. The TPD signal is not directly proportional to the oxygen coverage, which is explained by diffusion of part of the adsorbed oxygen into the bulk. Oxygen has been adsorbed both at pressures of less than 10-4 Pa in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber and at pressures up to 103 Pa in a preparation chamber. After desorption at 103 Pa a new type of weakly bound subsurface oxygen is identified, which can be transferred to the surface by heating the crystal to 470 K. CO2 is not adsorbed as such on clean silver at 300 K. However, it is adsorbed in the form of a carbonate ion if the surface is first exposed to oxygen. If the crystal is heated this complex decomposes into Oad and CO2 with an activation energy of 27 kcal/mol(1 kcal = 4.187 kJ). Up to an oxygen coverage of 0.25 one CO2 molecule is adsorbed per two oxygen atoms on the surface. At higher oxygen coverages the amount of CO2 adsorbed becomes smaller. CO readily reacts with Oad at room temperature to form CO2. This reaction has been used to measure the number of O atoms present on the surface at 300 K relative to the amount of CO2 that is adsorbed at 300 K by the formation of a carbonate ion. Weakly bound subsurface oxygen does not react with CO at 300 K. Adsorption of C2H4O at 110 K is promoted by the presence of atomic oxygen. The activation energy for desorption of C2H4O from clean silver is ~ 9 kcal/mol, whereas on the oxygen-precovered surface two states are found with activation energies of 8.5 and 12.5 kcal/mol. The results are discussed in terms of the mechanism of ethylene epoxidation over unpromoted and unmoderated silver.  相似文献

Adsorption states of oxygen on Cu(111) at 100–300 K were investigated by means of HREELS. Two molecular species were characterized by different OO stretching frequencies (v(OO)) at 610 cm−1 and 820–870 cm−1, which are assigned to the peroxo-like species (O2−2) adsorbed in a bridged form and the one in a bidentate form bound on an atop site, respectively. The bridged peroxo species is preferred at the low coverage and the atop peroxo species becomes dominant at the higher coverage. In addition to the peaks due to the molecular oxygen, a peak assigned to v(CuO) of atomic oxygen was observed at 370 cm−1 at the high coverage. The frequency of this mode was higher than the frequency reported for Cu(111) exposed to oxygen above 300 K, indicating that the adsorption state of atomic oxygen formed at 100 K is different from that above 300 K. The v(OO) modes became faint after annealing to 170 K because of O2 dissociation. The v(CuO) mode of the atomic oxygen formed at 100 K remained up to 230 K and disappeared after annealing to 300 K. No desorption of O2 was detected on annealing to 300 K. It was also found that vibrational spectra for adsorbed NH3 are influenced by the adsorption states of atomic oxygen on Cu(111).

The ion angular distributions resulting from electron stimulated desorption (ESD) of oxygen and carbon monoxide chemisorbed on a tungsten (111) crystal have been determined. The O+ ions released during ESD of adsorbed oxygen exhibit three-fold symmetric angular distributions in orientational registry with the W(111) substrate. The CO+ and O+ ions released during ESD of a monolayer of CO are desorbed normal to the (111) surface. Models for both oxygen and CO adsorption are discussed. The data for CO are consistent with adsorption of CO in “standing up” carbonyl structures in the virgin and α-CO binding states.  相似文献

The adsorption and coadsorption of CO and H2 have been studied by means of thermal desorption (TD) and electron stimulated desorption (ESD) at temperatures ranging from 250 to 400 K. Three CO TD states, labelled as β2, β1, and β0 were detected after adsorption at 250 K. The population of β2 and β1 states which are the only ones observed upon adsorption at temperatures higher than 300 K was found to depend on adsorption temperature. The correlation between the binding states in the TD spectra and the ESD O+ and CO+ ions observed was discussed. Hydrogen is dissociatively adsorbed on Pd(111) and no ESD H+ signal was recorded following H2 adsorption on a clean Pd surface. The presence of CO was found to cause an appearance of a H+ ESD signal, a decrease of hydrogen surface population and an arisement of a broad H2 TD peak at about 450 K. An apparent influence of hydrogen on CO adsorption was detected at high hydrogen precoverages alone, leading to a decrease in the CO sticking coefficient and the relative population of CO β2 state. The coadsorption results were interpreted assuming mutual interaction between CO and H at low and medium CO coverages, the “cooperative” species being responsible for the H+ ESD signal. Besides, the presence of CO was proved to favour hydrogen penetration into the bulk even at high CO coverage when H atoms were completely displaced from the surface.  相似文献

A new CO2 formation process was observed in the CO oxidation over Pt(111) surface below 200 K. The desorption flux of the product CO2, which is formed from the interaction between chemisorbed CO and adsorbed oxygen molecules O22? (a), showed a very sharp angular distribution along the surface normal.  相似文献

The adsorption of oxygen on the ruthenium (001) surface has been studied using a combination of techniques: LEED/Auger, Kelvin probe contact potential changes, and flash desorption mass spectrometry. Oxygen is rapidly adsorbed at 300 K, forming an ordered LEED structure having apparent (2 × 2) symmetry. Two binding states of oxygen are inferred from the abrupt change in surface work function as a function of oxygen coverage. LEED intensity measurements indicate that the oxygen layer undergoes an order-disorder transition at temperatures several hundred degrees below the onset of desorption. The order-disorder transition temperature is a function of the oxygen coverage, consistent with two binding states. A model involving the adsorption of atomic oxygen at θ < 0.5 and the formation of complexes with higher oxygen content at θ > 0.5 is proposed. The oxidation of CO to form CO2 was found to have the maximum rate of production at a ruthenium temperature of 950 K.  相似文献

The adsorption, decomposition, and desorption of NO on the close packed Ni(111) surface have been investigated by XPS, XPS satellites, XAES, UPS, and LEED between 125 and 1000 K. At adsorption temperatures below 300 K a single molecular species (v) is formed with about unit sticking coefficient, which is interpreted as bridge-bonded; its saturation coverage is about 85% of that of CO, i.e. 0.5 relative to surface Ni atoms. Adsorption at 300 to 400 K yields dissociative adsorption (β) followed by molecular adsorption; above 400 K only dissociated species are formed. Upon heating, a full molecular layer dissociates only after some NO desorption (at 380–400 K), while dilute layers (below half coverage) dissociate already above 300 K without NO desorption. Together with quantitative findings this shows that for dissociation of one v-NO, the space of two is required. N2 desorption from the β-layer occurs above 740 K; the oxygen staying behind diffuses into the crystal above 800 K. Readsorption of NO onto a β-layer or onto an oxygen precoverage at 125 K leads, besides to an α1-state similar to v-NO, to another molecular state (α2) which is interpreted as linearly bound. The resulting total coverage is considerably higher than in a virgin layer. This shows that the blocking of dissociation in a full v-layer is probably not due to β requiring the same sites, but to kinetic hindrance; an influence of β-induced surface reconstruction cannot be excluded, however. The LEED results agree with a previous report and are well compatible with the other results.  相似文献

The adsorption and decomposition of formic acid on NiO(111)-p(2 × 2) films grown on Ni(111) single crystal surface were studied by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectroscopy. Exposure of formic acid at 163 K resulted in both molecular adsorption and dissociation to formate. The adsorbed formate underwent further dissociation to H2, CO2 and CO. H2 and CO2 desorbed at the same temperatures of 340, 390 and 520 K, while CO desorbed at 415 and 520 K. The desorption features varied with the formic acid exposure. Two reaction channels were identified for the decomposition of formate under equilibrium with gas-phase formic acid with a pressure of 2.5 × 10−4Pa, one preferentially producing H2 and CO2 with an activation energy of 22 ± 2 kJ mol−1 and the other preferentially producing CO and H2O with an activation energy of 16 ± 2 kJ mol−1. The order of both reaction paths was 0.5 with respect to the pressure of formic acid.  相似文献

Overlayers formed by the adsorption of Ni(CO)4 in CO on the Ni(111) surface at 100 K were characterized using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and thermal desorption spectroscopy. At temperatures below 135 K, molecular nickel carbonyl adsorbs on the CO saturated Ni(111) surface as suggested by several observations. Vibrational transitions characteristic of molecular Ni(CO)4 are dominant. The energy dependence of both the elastic and inelastic electron scattering cross sections are dramatically altered by Ni(CO)4 adsorption. All of the mass spectrometer ionization fragments typical of molecular Ni(CO)4 are observed in the narrow thermal desorption peak at 150 K. The inelastic scattering cross sections for both adsorbed nickel carbonyl and adsorbed CO on the Ni(111) surface suggest that a nonresonant dipole scattering mechanism is dominant.  相似文献

Electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS) in the energy range of electronic transitions (primary energy 30 < E0 < 50 eV, resolution ΔE ≈ 0.3 eV) has been used to study the adsorption of CO on polycrystalline surfaces and on the low index faces (100), (110), (111) of Cu at 80 K. Also LEED patterns were investigated and thermal desorption was analyzed by means of the temperature dependence of three losses near 9, 12 and 14 eV characteristic for adsorbed CO. The 12 and 14 eV losses occur on all Cu surfaces in the whole coverage range; they are interpreted in terms of intramolecular transitions of the CO. The 9 eV loss is sensitive to the crystallographic type of Cu surface and to the coverage with CO. The interpretation in terms of d(Cu) → 2π1(CO) charge transfer transitions allows conclusions concerning the adsorption site geometry. The ELS results are consistent with information obtained from LEED. On the (100) surface CO adsorption enhances the intensity of a bulk electronic transition near 4 eV at E0 < 50 eV. This effect is interpreted within the framework of dielectric theory for surface scattering on the basis of the Cu electron energy band scheme.  相似文献

The chemisorption of CO on W(100) at ~ 100K has been studied using a combination of flash desorption and electron stimulated desorption (ESD) techniques. This is an extension of a similar study made for CO adsorption on W(100) at temperatures in the range 200–300K. As in the 200–300 K CO layer, both α1-CO and α2-CO are formed in addition to more strongly bound CO species upon adsorption at ~ 100K; the α-CO states yield CO+ and O+ respectively upon ESD. At low CO coverages, the α1 and α2-CO states are postulated to convert to β-CO or other strongly bound CO species upon heating. At higher CO coverages, α1-CO converts to α2-CO upon thermal desorption or electron stimulated desorption. There is evidence for the presence of other weakly-bound states in the low temperature CO layer having low surface concentration at saturation. The ESD behavior of the CO layer coadsorbed with hydrogen on W(100) is reported, and it is found that H(ads) suppresses either the concentration or the ionic cross section for α1 and α2-CO states.  相似文献

The thermal and electro impact behaviour of NO adsorbed on Pt(111) and Pt(110) have been studied by LEED, Auger spectroscopy, and thermal desorption. NO was found to adsorb non-dissociatively and with very similar low coverage adsorption enthalpies on the two surfaces at 300 K. In both cases, heating the adlayer resulted in partial dissociation and led to the appearance of N2 and O2 in the desorption spectra. The (111) surface was found to be significantly more active in inducing the thermal dissociation of NO, and on this surface the molecule was also rapidly desorbed and dissociated under electron impact. Cross sections for these processes were obtained, together with the desorption cross section for atomically bound N formed by dissociation of adsorbed NO. Electron impact effects were found to be much less important on the (110) surface. The results are considered in relation to those already obtained by Ertl et al. for NO adsorption on Ni(111) and Pd(111), and in particular, the unusual desorption kinetics of N2 production are considered explicitly. Where appropriate, comparisons are made with the behaviour of CO on Pt(111) and Pt(110), and the adsorption kinetics of NO on the (110) surface have been examined.  相似文献

We investigate the adsorption of CO2 onto Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) surfaces at 150, 300 and 600 K using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Following CO2 adsorption at 150 K the graphitic form of carbon is detected, whereas upon chemisorption at 300 and 600 K we detect the carbidic phase. As the adsorption temperature is increased, the carbon Auger signal increases, whereas the oxygen signal decreases. Adsorption at all three temperatures results in a shift of the Zr Auger features, indicating surface oxidation. The effect of adsorbed CO2 on the Zr(MVV) and Zr(MNV) transitions depends on adsorption temperature and is less pronounced at higher temperatures. On the other hand, changes in the Zr(MNN) feature are similar for all three adsorption temperatures. The changes in the Zr Auger peak shapes and positions are attributed to oxygen from dissociated CO2, with the differences observed at various temperatures indicative of the diffusion of oxygen into the subsurface region.  相似文献

The adsorption of oxygen and the interaction of carbon monoxide with oxygen on Ru(101) have been studied by LEED, Auger spectroscopy and thermal desorption. Oxygen chemisorbs at 300 K via a precursor state and with an initial sticking probability of ~0.004, the enthalpy of adsorption being ~300 kJ mol?1. As coverage increases a well ordered ¦11,30¦ phase is formed which at higher coverages undergoes compression along [010] to form a ¦21,50¦ structure, and the surface eventually saturates at 0 ~ 89. Incorporation of oxygen into the subsurface region of the crystal leads to drastic changes in the surface chemistry of CO. A new high; temperature peak (γ CO, Ed ~ 800 kJ mol?1) appears in the desorption spectra, in addition to the α and β CO peaks which are characteristic of the clean surface. Coadsorption experiments using 18O2 indicate that γ CO is not dissociatively adsorbed, and this species is also shown to be in competition with β CO for a common adsorption site. The unusual temperature dependence of the LEED intensities of the ¦11,30¦-O phase and the nature of α, β, and β CO are discussed. Oxygen does not displace adsorbed CO at 300 K and the converse is also true, neither do any Eley-Rideal or Langmuir-Hinshelwood reactions occur under these conditions. Such processes do occur at higher temperatures, and in particular the reaction CO(g) + O(a) → CO2(g) appears to occur with much greater collisional efficiency than on Ru(001). The oxidation of CO has been examined under steady state conditions, and the reaction was found to proceed with an apparent activation energy of 39 kJ mol?. This result rules out the commonly accepted explanation that CO desorption is rate determining, and is compared with the findings of other authors.  相似文献

The surface chemistry of isocyanic acid, HNCO, and its dissociation product, NCO, was studied on clean, O-dosed and Ar ion bombarded Au(111) surfaces. The techniques used are high resolution energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The structure of Ar ion etched surface is explored by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). HNCO adsorbs molecularly on Au(111) surface at 100 K yielding strong losses at 1390, 2270 and 3230 cm? 1. The weakly adsorbed HNCO desorbs in two peaks characterized by Tp = 130 and 145 K. The dissociation of the chemisorbed HNCO occurs at 150 K to give NCO species characterized by a vibration at 2185 cm? 1. The dissociation process is facilitated by the presence of preadsorbed O and by defect sites on Au(111) produced by Ar ion bombardment. In the latter case the loss feature of NCO appeared at 2130 cm? 1. Isocyanate on Au(111) surface was found to be more stable than on the single crystal surfaces of Pt-group metals. Results are compared with those obtained on supported Au catalysts.  相似文献

The mechanism of the reaction of oxygen with CO on Pt(111) and polycrystalline surfaces was studied at low temperatures, with reactive thermal desorption and isotope tracer techniques. Two CO2 formation processes were observed. The first is the interaction between CO and oxygen admolecules, which takes place below 200 K. The second is the reaction of CO admolecules with oxygen adatoms. The desorption flux of the product CO2 of both processes shows a very sharp angular distribution along the surface normal.  相似文献
