Summary: We describe the development of different drop‐on‐demand systems particularly for applications for the liquid handling of biopolymers. Different designs of drop‐on‐demand systems developed by the authors are described. Experiments with these systems show the applicability for pipetting different liquids with different properties. Commercially available systems are also tested. A comparison of the different approaches leads to a discussion of the best fields of application of the different approaches or, alternatively, to the potential further development of the drop‐on‐demand technologies.

A ‘grafting‐from’ approach to synthesize microparticle‐supported conjugated polyelectrolyte brushes is presented. Poly(3‐bromohexylthiophene) is selectively grown from monodisperse organosilica microparticles by surface‐initiated Kumada catalyst‐transfer polycondensation (SI‐KCTP) and then ionizable amino groups are introduced by a two‐step polymer analogous transformation. Optical properties of the resulting microparticle‐supported conjugated polyelectrolyte brushes were found to be dependent on the surrounding chemical environment and thus the particles are promising materials for sensor applications.

Novel poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) derivatives having both carboxylic acid, and sugar side chains were synthesized. These polymers were used to coat DNA/poly(ethyleneimine) complexes, and effectively protected them against albumin-induced aggregation. They presented carbohydrate moieties on the DNA complex surfaces as a cell-binding ligand, and the galactose-bearing polymer remarkably enhanced the poly(ethyleneimine)-mediated gene transfection on HepG2 cells.

PS‐b‐PAA spherical micelles with a liquid core and a PAA shell are prepared with the assistance of 1,2‐dichloroethane. During the process of adding a mixture of PNIPAM‐b‐P4VP and PEG‐b‐P4VP, multi‐layered micelles with a mixed corona that consists of both PNIPAM and PEG chains are constructed through the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the PAA block and the P4VP block. When heating above the LCST, the PNIPAM chains collapse onto the PAA/P4VP complex layer while the PEG chains still stretch into the solution through the collapsed PNIPAM layer, which leads to the formation of hydrophilic channels around the PEG chains. The ibuprofen encapsulated in the hollow space can diffuse through the channels and its release rate can be controlled by changing the ratio of PEG chains to PNIPAM chains in the corona.

Summary: Three‐dimensional polyaniline (PANI) nanowire networks were synthesized in high yield using a “soft template” self‐assembled with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and oxalic acid. The PANI nanowire networks had diameters from 35–100 nm depending on synthesis conditions and/or procedures. The networks and the “cross‐linking points” were clearly observed by field‐emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A possible mechanism for the formation of three‐dimensional PANI nanowire networks is discussed.

A novel redox‐induced shape‐memory polymer (SMP) is prepared by crosslinking β‐cyclodextrin modified chitosan (β‐CD‐CS) and ferrocene modified branched ethylene imine polymer (Fc‐PEI). The resulting β‐CD‐CS/Fc‐PEI contains two crosslinks: reversible redox‐sensitive β‐CD‐Fc inclusion complexes serving as reversible phases, and covalent crosslinks serving as fixing phases. It is shown that this material can be processed into temporary shapes as needed in the reduced state and recovers its initial shape after oxidation. The recovery ratio and the fixity ratio are both above 70%. Furthermore, after entrapping glucose oxidase (GOD) in the system, the material shows a shape memory effect in response to glucose. The recovery ratio and the fixity ratio are also above 70%.

Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was used for the synthesis of monolithic capillary columns with inner diameters of 200 µm. The resulting polymeric monoliths were characterized by inverse size‐exclusion chromatography (ISEC). Surface functionalization was carried out in situ using 2‐(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl)norborn‐5‐ene‐2‐ylcarboxylic amide ( 1 ). The resulting functionalized monoliths were successfully used in anion‐exchange chromatography of oligodeoxynucleotides.
