Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is a powerful analytical method, but LIBS is subject to a matrix effect which can limit its ability to produce quantitative results in complex materials such as geologic samples. Various methods of sample preparation, calibration, and data processing have been attempted to compensate for the matrix effect and improve LIBS precision. This study focuses on sample preparation by comparing fused glass as a preparation for powdered material to the more commonly used method of pressing powder into pellets for LIBS analysis of major elements in complex geologic materials. Pelletizing powdered material is a common and convenient method for preparing samples but problems with the physical matrix brought on by inconsistencies in the homogeneity, density, and laser absorption, coupled with the chemical matrix problem lead to spectral peak responses that are not always consistent with the absolute concentration of representative elements. Twenty-two mineral and rock samples were analyzed for eight major oxide elements. Samples were prepared under both glass and pellet methods and compared for internal precision and overall accuracy. Fused glass provided a more consistent physical matrix and yielded more reliable peak responses in the LIBS analysis than did the pressed pellet preparation. Statistical comparisons demonstrated that the glass samples expressed stronger separability between different mineral species based on the eight elements than for the pressed pellets and showed better spot-to-spot repeatability. Regression models showed substantially better correlations and predictive ability among the elements for the glass preparation than did those for the pressed pellets.  相似文献

Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) in combination with Principal Components Regression (PCR) has been applied to determine the elemental composition of a series of run-of-mine (ROM) iron ore samples. The samples were presented for measurement both as compressed pellets and as loose chipped material. The present paper details the results of the measurements of the compressed pellets. Results from ore chips will be reported separately. LIBS spectral data was recorded in three separate spectral regions to measure major, minor and trace components of the iron ore sample pellets. Background stripping, normalization and spectral cleaning were applied to minimize the relative standard deviations of the LIBS data. PCR analysis was then applied to produce calibration models for iron, aluminum, silicon, manganese, potassium and phosphorous. These calibration models were then validated using independent LIBS measurements. Robust calibration models were determined for iron, aluminum, silicon and potassium, whilst the results for manganese were encouraging. Phosphorous, present at low levels in the ores measured, remained the most difficult element to determine accurately. The combination of LIBS and PCR shows potential for in-situ on-line determination of ore composition.  相似文献

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been developed for determining the percentage of uranium in thorium-uranium mixed oxide fuel samples required as a part of the chemical quality assurance of fuel materials. The experimental parameters were optimized using mixed oxide pellets prepared from 1:1 (w/w) mixture of thorium-uranium mixed oxide standards and using boric acid as a binder. Calibration curves were established using U(II) 263.553 nm, U(II) 367.007 nm, U(II) 447.233 nm and U(II) 454.363 nm emission lines. The uranium amount determined in two synthetic mixed oxide samples using calibration curves agreed well with that of the expected values. Except for U(II) 263.553 nm, all the other emission lines exhibited a saturation effect due to self-absorption when U amount exceeded 20 wt.% in the Th-U mixture. The present method will be useful for fast and routine determination of uranium in mixed oxide samples of Th and U, without the need for dissolution, which is difficult and time consuming due to the refractory nature of ThO2. The methodology developed is encouraging since a very good analytical agreement was obtained considering the limited resolution of the spectrometer employed in the work.  相似文献

Trace analysis of nuclear materials in solid particles collected in the environment or particles in liquid slurry generated in nuclear material manufacturing processes can pinpoint elemental, organic, and isotopic signatures of nuclear fuel cycle activities and processes. Such information can support nuclear safeguards programs by increasing our ability to detect undeclared nuclear materials, routine activities for safeguarding at declared facilities, and illicit activities. However, trace radioactive material analysis in liquids and slurries is challenging using bulk approaches. For example, one drawback of sensitive analysis such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is that sample is consumed or destroyed as a result of the technical approach. We developed a vacuum compatible microfluidic interface to enable surface analysis of liquids and solid–liquid interactions using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). In this work, we illustrate the initial results from the analysis of liquid uranium oxide standard solutions using in situ liquid SIMS. Because the liquid SIMS analysis is almost nondestructive, the same sample can then be analyzed by other analytical techniques or saved for future reference. Consequently, multimodal analysis is possible. Our results demonstrate that in situ liquid SIMS can be used as a new approach to analyze radioactive materials in liquid and slurry forms of relevance to diverse applications.  相似文献

This paper presents studies on direct non-destructive determination of uranium in sintered deeply depleted (DD) uranium oxide (UO2) pellets by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) spectrometry. A special collet was designed and fabricated for holding the sintered DDUO2 pellets for direct analysis, thus avoiding the sample preparation steps. The samples were analyzed using a calibration plot obtained from WDXRF spectra of matrix matched calibration standards. The WDXRF determined uranium values were found to be in very close agreement with titrimetric values and has reproducibility better than 0.05% (RSD, 1 s, n = 10) for the sintered DDUO2 pellets having U: 86.81–88.04 wt%.

The application of laser induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) aiming the direct analysis of plant materials is a great challenge that still needs efforts for its development and validation. In this way, a series of experimental approaches has been carried out in order to show that LIBS can be used as an alternative method to wet acid digestions based methods for analysis of agricultural and environmental samples. The large amount of information provided by LIBS spectra for these complex samples increases the difficulties for selecting the most appropriated wavelengths for each analyte. Some applications have suggested that improvements in both accuracy and precision can be achieved by the application of multivariate calibration in LIBS data when compared to the univariate regression developed with line emission intensities. In the present work, the performance of univariate and multivariate calibration, based on partial least squares regression (PLSR), was compared for analysis of pellets of plant materials made from an appropriate mixture of cryogenically ground samples with cellulose as the binding agent. The development of a specific PLSR model for each analyte and the selection of spectral regions containing only lines of the analyte of interest were the best conditions for the analysis. In this particular application, these models showed a similar performance, but PLSR seemed to be more robust due to a lower occurrence of outliers in comparison to the univariate method. Data suggests that efforts dealing with sample presentation and fitness of standards for LIBS analysis must be done in order to fulfill the boundary conditions for matrix independent development and validation.  相似文献

A radiochemical procedure is described for the fast and sensitive measurement of uranium isotopes in gaseous and liquid effluents of nuclear facilities. Equally, this procedure is suitable to measure uranium isotopes in all kinds of environmental samples. Uranium is leached from ashed sample materials with HNO3, HF, and Al(NO3)3 solution and separated from matrix elements by extraction with trioctylphosphinic oxide and backextraction with NH4F. After radiochemical cleaning by coprecipitation with LaF3 and anion exchange, uranium isotopes are electroplated on stainless steel discs from HCl/oxalate solution. The preparation is measured by alpha-spectrometry using surface barrier detectors. The detection limit for 1000 minutes of counting time is 2 mBq per sample and nuclide, the chemical yield is in the range of 50 to 80%.  相似文献

Near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was examined as a potential tool for the determination of forensic signatures indicative of the chemical process history of uranium oxides. The ability to determine the process history of nuclear materials is a desired, but underdeveloped, area of technical nuclear forensics. Application of the NIR technique potentially offers a quick and non-destructive tool to serve this need; however, few data have been published on the compounds of interest. The viability of NIR was investigated through the analysis of a combination of laboratory-derived and real-world uranium precipitates and oxides. A set of reference uranium materials was synthesized in the laboratory using the commonly encountered aqueous precipitation reactions for uranium ore concentration and chemical separation processes (ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, and magnesia). NIR spectra were taken on a range of samples heat treated in air between 85 and 750 °C. X-ray diffraction patterns were also obtained to complement the NIR analysis with crystal phase information. Similar analyses were performed using a set of real-world samples, with process information obtained from the literature, to provide a comparison between materials synthesized in the laboratory and samples representative of industrial processes.  相似文献

A simple but accurate method has been developed for the determination of carbon in uranium carbide powders/pellets as well as in solutions of uranyl nitrates. The methodology involves quantitative conversion of carbon present in the sample to carbon dioxide that is subsequently absorbed in a dilute solution of barium hydroxide. The conductivity shift of the barium hydroxide solution is monitored on-line continuously using a laboratory-built PC-based conductivity measurement system that has been developed in-house based on the direct conversion of conductance to the digital pulse frequency. A new gas absorption cell has been designed to ensure quantitative absorption during the residence time of the gas in the cell. The method is sensitive, accurate and precise to 1-3% at 600-1000 mug of carbon in samples of uranium carbide.  相似文献

The homogenization of samples of gold ore by methanol mixing has been examined by neutron activation in the Safari-1 nuclear reactor. Activity ratios of gold-198 to neptunium-239 (for gold to uranium contents) and arsenic-76 to neptunium-239 (for arsenic to uranium contents) have been analysed to study the homogenety of the samples. In these post-cyanide residue samples, residual gold is found to be considerably less homogeneously distributed than in chemically untreated ore samples. The distribution of uranium in ore samples is not affected by chemical treatment.  相似文献

The oxygen to uranium ratio in uranium oxides such as U(3)O(8), UO(2+x) powders and UO(2) fuel pellets has been determined by a new spectrophotometric method. The method can be used for determination of O/U ratio in UO(2) pellets and powders on a routine basis. In the described method, uranium oxides in the powder form are dissolved in 2M sulphuric acid containing a few drops of HF. The concentrations of U(IV) and U(VI) are directly determined by means of the absorbances of these species at different wavelengths. For determination of the O/U ratio in U(3)O(8) powder samples, 630 and 310 nm are the wavelengths chosen for U(IV) and U(VI), respectively. For UO(2+x) powder, where the O/U ratio lies between 2.04 to 2.15, U(IV) and U(VI) are determined at 630 and 300 nm respectively, whereas for UO(2) fuel pellets, where the O/U ratio is less than 2.01, 535 and 285 nm are used. The molar absorptivity of U(IV) at 630 and 535 nm is 21.4 and 6.8 l.mole(-1).cm(-1) and that of U(VI) at 310, 300 and 285 nm is 178.1, 278.6 and 585 l.mole(-1).cm(-1), respectively. Standard deviations of +/-0.002 O/U ratio units for pellets and +/-0.004 O/U ratio units for powders have been achieved.  相似文献

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become an analytical tool for the direct analysis of a large variety of materials in order to provide qualitative and/or quantitative information. However, there is a lack of information for LIBS analysis of agricultural and environmental samples. In this work a LIBS system has been evaluated for the determination of macronutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg) in pellets of vegetal reference materials. An experimental setup was designed by using a Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm and an Echelle spectrometer with ICCD detector. The plasma temperature was estimated by Boltzmann plots and instrumental parameters such as delay time, lens-to-sample distance and pulse energy were evaluated. Certified reference materials as well as reference materials were used for analytical calibrations of P, K, Ca, and Mg. Most results of the direct analysis of plant samples by LIBS were in reasonable agreement with those obtained by ICP OES after wet acid decomposition.  相似文献

A large suite of natural carbonate, fluorite and silicate geological materials was studied using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Both single- and double-pulse LIBS spectra were acquired using close-contact benchtop and standoff (25 m) LIBS systems. Principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were used to identify the distinguishing characteristics of the geological samples and to classify the materials. Excellent discrimination was achieved with all sample types using PLS-DA and several techniques for improving sample classification were identified. The laboratory double-pulse LIBS system did not provide any advantage for sample classification over the single-pulse LIBS system, except in the case of the soil samples. The standoff LIBS system provided comparable results to the laboratory systems. This work also demonstrates how PCA can be used to identify spectral differences between similar sample types based on minor impurities.  相似文献

A simple, inexpensive PC based potentiometric titration technique for the assay of uranium using low volumes of sample aliquot (25–100 μL) along with all reagents (total volume of solution being less than 2.5 mL) is presented. The technique involves modification of the well known Davies and Gray Method recommended for assay of uranium(VI) in nuclear materials by introducing an innovative potentiometric titration device with a mini cell developed in-house. After appropriate chemical conditioning the titration is completed within a couple of minutes with display of online titration plot showing the progress of titration. The first derivative plot generated immediately after titration provides information of end point. The main advantage of using this technique is to carry out titration with minimum volumes of sample and reagents generating minimum volume of wastes after titration. The validity of the technique was evaluated using standard certified samples. This technique was applied for assay of uranium in a typical sample collected from fuel reprocessing laboratory. Further, the present technique was deployed in investigating the optimum conditions for efficient in situ production of U(IV). The precision in the estimation of uranium is highly satisfactory (RSD less than 1.0%).  相似文献

A microscopic laser-induced breakdown spectrometer was used to evaluate the analytical matrix effect commonly observed in the analysis of geological materials. Samples were analyzed in either the powder or pressed pellet forms. Calibration curves of a number of iron and aluminum compounds showed a linear relationship between the elemental concentration and peak intensity. A direct determination of elemental content can thus be made from extrapolation on these calibration curves. To investigate matrix effects, synthetic model samples were prepared from various iron and aluminum compounds spiked with SiO2 and CaCO3. The addition of these matrices had a pronounced analytical effect on those compounds prepared as pressed pellets. However, results indicated the absence of matrix effects when the samples were presented to the laser as loose powders on tape and results were compared to certified values, indicating the reliability of this approach for accurate analysis, provided the sample particle diameters are greater than ≈100 μm. Finally, the simultaneous analysis of two different elements was demonstrated using powders on tape.  相似文献

The hyphenation of lab-on-valve (LOV) and multisyringe flow analysis (MSFIA), coupled to a long path length liquid waveguide capillary cell (LWCC), allows the spectrophotometric determination of uranium in different types of environmental sample matrices, without any manual pre-treatment, and achieving high selectivity and sensitivity levels. On-line separation and preconcentration of uranium is carried out by means of UTEVA resin. The potential of the LOV-MSFIA makes possible the fully automation of the system by the in-line regeneration of the column. After elution, uranium(VI) is spectrophotometrically detected after reaction with arsenazo-III. The determination of levels of uranium present in environmental samples is required in order to establish an environmental control. Thus, we propose a rapid, cheap and fully automated method to determine uranium(VI) in environmental samples. The limit of detection reached is 1.9 ηg of uranium and depending on the preconcentrated volume; it results in ppt levels (10.3 ηg L−1). Different water sample matrices (seawater, well water, freshwater, tap water and mineral water) and a phosphogypsum sample (with natural uranium content) were satisfactorily analyzed.  相似文献

The fission track registration technique using Melinex-0 as the detector has been applied to estimate uranium concentration in soil and plant samples collected from different parts of this region of India. The soil samples were powdered and plant samples were ashed to form pellets which were then irradiated with thermal neutrons. Uranium was found to vary from 0.023 to 0.430 ppm in soil samples and 0.026 to 0.216 ppm in plant (Mesophyte group) samples. Fission track technique provides simple, inexpensive, reliable and sensitive method and has high potentiality for uranium analyses in plants and agricultural crops and getting information about underlying ore and mineral deposits.  相似文献

Quantitative and isotopic measurement of actinide elements is required in many circumstances in the nuclear industry. For example, determination of very low levels of these alpha emitters in human urine samples is used to assess the internal committed dose for nuclear workers. Quantifying actinide isotopes in radioactive waste from nuclear processing and nuclear facility decommissioning provides important information for waste management. Accurate determination of the uranium isotopic ratios in reactor fuels provides fuel burnup information. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been used for the determination of Th, U, and Pu in various samples including urine, nuclear waste, and nuclear fuel in our laboratory. In order to maximize the capability of the technique and ensure quality analyses, ICP-MS was used to analyze samples directly, or after pre-treatment to separate complicated matrices or to concentrate the analyte(s). High-efficiency sample introduction techniques were investigated. Spectral interferences to minor isotopes caused by peak tails and hydride ions of major actinide isotopes were studied in detail using solutions prepared with light and heavy waters. The quality of the isotopic ratio measurement was monitored using standard reference materials.  相似文献

A simple and rapid laser fluorometric determination of trace and ultra trace level of uranium in a wide variety of low uranium content materials like soil, basic and ultra basic rocks, plant ash, coal fly ash and red mud samples is described. Interference studies of some common major, minor and trace elements likely to be present in different, geological materials on uranium fluorescence are studied using different fluorescence enhancing reagents like sodium pyrophosphate, orthophosphoric acid, penta sodium tri-polyphosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate. The accurate determination of very low uranium content samples which are rich in iron, manganese and calcium, is possible only after the selective separation of uranium. Conditions suitable for the quantitative single step extraction of 25 ng to 20 μg uranium with tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and single step quantitative stripping with dilute neutral sodium pyrophosphate, which also acts as fluorescence enhancing reagent is studied. The aqueous strip is used for the direct laser fluorometric measurement without any further pretreatment. The procedure is applied for the determination of uranium in soil, basalt, plant ash, coal fly ash and red mud samples. The accuracy of the proposed method is checked by analyzing certain standard reference materials as well as synthetic sample with known quantity of uranium. The accuracy and reproducibility of the method are fairly good with RSD ranging from 3 to 5% depend upon the concentration of uranium.  相似文献
