Optimally super-edge-connected transitive graphs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Jixiang Meng   《Discrete Mathematics》2003,260(1-3):239-248
Let X=(V,E) be a connected regular graph. X is said to be super-edge-connected if every minimum edge cut of X is a set of edges incident with some vertex. The restricted edge connectivity λ′(X) of X is the minimum number of edges whose removal disconnects X into non-trivial components. A super-edge-connected k-regular graph is said to be optimally super-edge-connected if its restricted edge connectivity attains the maximum 2k−2. In this paper, we define the λ′-atoms of graphs with respect to restricted edge connectivity and show that if X is a k-regular k-edge-connected graph whose λ′-atoms have size at least 3, then any two distinct λ′-atoms are disjoint. Using this property, we characterize the super-edge-connected or optimally super-edge-connected transitive graphs and Cayley graphs. In particular, we classify the optimally super-edge-connected quasiminimal Cayley graphs and Cayley graphs of diameter 2. As a consequence, we show that almost all Cayley graphs are optimally super-edge-connected.  相似文献

A dominating set for a graph G = (V, E) is a subset of vertices VV such that for all v ε VV′ there exists some u ε V′ for which {v, u} ε E. The domination number of G is the size of its smallest dominating set(s). For a given graph G with minimum size dominating set D, let m1 (G, D) denote the number of edges that have neither endpoint in D, and let m2 (G, D) denote the number of edges that have at least one endpoint in D. We characterize the possible values that the pair (m1 (G, D), m2 (G, D)) can attain for connected graphs having a given domination number.  相似文献

For any positive integer n and any graph G a set D of vertices of G is a distance-n dominating set, if every vertex vV(G)−D has exactly distance n to at least one vertex in D. The distance-n domination number γ=n(G) is the smallest number of vertices in any distance-n dominating set. If G is a graph of order p and each vertex in G has distance n to at least one vertex in G, then the distance-n domination number has the upper bound p/2 as Ore's upper bound on the classical domination number. In this paper, a characterization is given for graphs having distance-n domination number equal to half their order, when the diameter is greater or equal 2n−1. With this result we confirm a conjecture of Boland, Haynes, and Lawson.  相似文献

Let G be an infinite locally finite connected graph. We study the reconstructibility of G in relation to the structure of its end set . We prove that an infinite locally finite connected graph G is reconstructible if there exists a finite family i)0i (n2) of pairwise finitely separable subsets of such that, for all x,y,x′,yV(G) and every isomorphism f of G−{x,y} onto G−{x′,y′} there is a permutation π of {0,…,n−1} such that for 0i<n. From this theorem we deduce, as particular consequences, that G is reconstructible if it satisfies one of the following properties: (i) G contains no end-respecting subdivision of the dyadic tree and has at least two ends of maximal order; (ii) the set of thick ends or the one of thin ends of G is finite and of cardinality greater than one. We also prove that if almost all vertices of G are cutvertices, then G is reconstructible if it contains a free end or if it has at least a vertex which is not a cutvertex.  相似文献

Given a graph G and a positive integer d, an L(d,1)-labeling of G is a function f that assigns to each vertex of G a non-negative integer such that if two vertices u and v are adjacent, then |f(u)−f(v)|d; if u and v are not adjacent but there is a two-edge path between them, then |f(u)−f(v)|1. The L(d,1)-number of G, λd(G), is defined as the minimum m such that there is an L(d,1)-labeling f of G with f(V){0,1,2,…,m}. Motivated by the channel assignment problem introduced by Hale (Proc. IEEE 68 (1980) 1497–1514), the L(2,1)-labeling and the L(1,1)-labeling (as d=2 and 1, respectively) have been studied extensively in the past decade. This article extends the study to all positive integers d. We prove that λd(G2+(d−1)Δ for any graph G with maximum degree Δ. Different lower and upper bounds of λd(G) for some families of graphs including trees and chordal graphs are presented. In particular, we show that the lower and the upper bounds for trees are both attainable, and the upper bound for chordal graphs can be improved for several subclasses of chordal graphs.  相似文献

A graph is called supereulerian if it has a spanning closed trail. Let G be a 2-edge-connected graph of order n such that each minimal edge cut SE(G) with |S|3 satisfies the property that each component of GS has order at least (n−2)/5. We prove that either G is supereulerian or G belongs to one of two classes of exceptional graphs. Our results slightly improve earlier results of Catlin and Li. Furthermore, our main result implies the following strengthening of a theorem of Lai within the class of graphs with minimum degree δ4: If G is a 2-edge-connected graph of order n with δ(G)4 such that for every edge xyE(G) , we have max{d(x),d(y)}(n−2)/5−1, then either G is supereulerian or G belongs to one of two classes of exceptional graphs. We show that the condition δ(G)4 cannot be relaxed.  相似文献

We describe two classes of graphs for which the stability number can be computed in polynomial time. The first approach is based on an iterative procedure which, at each step, builds from a graph G a new graph G′ which has fewer vertices and has the property that (G′) = (G) − 1. For the second class, it can be decided in polynomial time whether there exists a stable set of given size k.  相似文献

An irredundant set of vertices VV in a graph G=(V,E) has the property that for every vertex uV′, N[V′−{u}] is a proper subset of N[V′]. We investigate the parameterized complexity of determining whether a graph has an irredundant set of size k, where k is the parameter. The interest of this problem is that while most “k-element vertex set” problems are NP-complete, several are known to be fixed-parameter tractable, and others are hard for various levels of the parameterized complexity hierarchy. Complexity classification of vertex set problems in this framework has proved to be both more interesting and more difficult. We prove that the k-element irredundant set problem is complete for W[1], and thus has the same parameterized complexity as the problem of determining whether a graph has a k-clique. We also show that the “parametric dual” problem of determining whether a graph has an irredundant set of size nk is fixed-parameter tractable.  相似文献

We study the problem of designing fault-tolerant routings with small routing tables for a k-connected network of n processors in the surviving route graph model. The surviving route graph R(G,ρ)/F for a graph G, a routing ρ and a set of faults F is a directed graph consisting of nonfaulty nodes of G with a directed edge from a node x to a node y iff there are no faults on the route from x to y. The diameter of the surviving route graph could be one of the fault-tolerance measures for the graph G and the routing ρ and it is denoted by D(R(G,ρ)/F). We want to reduce the total number of routes defined in the routing, and the maximum of the number of routes defined for a node (called route degree) as least as possible. In this paper, we show that we can construct a routing λ for every n-node k-connected graph such that n2k2, in which the route degree is , the total number of routes is O(k2n) and D(R(G,λ)/F)3 for any fault set F (|F|<k). In particular, in the case that k=2 we can construct a routing λ′ for every biconnected graph in which the route degree is , the total number of routes is O(n) and D(R(G,λ′)/{f})3 for any fault f. We also show that we can construct a routing ρ1 for every n-node biconnected graph, in which the total number of routes is O(n) and D(R(G1)/{f})2 for any fault f, and a routing ρ2 (using ρ1) for every n-node biconnected graph, in which the route degree is , the total number of routes is and D(R(G2)/{f})2 for any fault f.  相似文献

Let ω be a bounded open set in Rn with smooth boundary ω We are concerned with a fourth order semilinear elliptic boundary value problem Δ2u + cΔu = bu+ + s inω under Dirichlet boundary condition. We investigate the existence of solutions of the fourth order nonlinear equation (0.1) when the nonlinearity bu+ crosses eigenvalues of Δ2 + cΔ under Dirichlet boundary condition.  相似文献

Block graphs with unique minimum dominating sets   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For any graph G a set D of vertices of G is a dominating set, if every vertex vV(G)−D has at least one neighbor in D. The domination number γ(G) is the smallest number of vertices in any dominating set. In this paper, a characterization is given for block graphs having a unique minimum dominating set. With this result, we generalize a theorem of Gunther, Hartnell, Markus and Rall for trees.  相似文献

If the paths of length s, joining two non-adjacent vertices u, υ of a graph cannot be destroyed by deleting less than t vertices, then there are at least t internally vertex-disjoint paths joining u and υ, each having length less than . Some constructions show that using paths of length at least s/t−1t might be necessary.  相似文献

A note on compact graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An undirected simple graph G is called compact iff its adjacency matrix A is such that the polytope S(A) of doubly stochastic matrices X which commute with A has integral-valued extremal points only. We show that the isomorphism problem for compact graphs is polynomial. Furthermore, we prove that if a graph G is compact, then a certain naive polynomial heuristic applied to G and any partner G′ decides correctly whether G and G′ are isomorphic or not. In the last section we discuss some compactness preserving operations on graphs.  相似文献

Remarks on the bondage number of planar graphs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The bondage number b(G) of a nonempty graph G is the cardinality of a smallest set of edges whose removal from G results in a graph with domination number greater than the domination number γ(G) of G. In 1998, J.E. Dunbar, T.W. Haynes, U. Teschner, and L. Volkmann posed the conjecture b(G)Δ(G)+1 for every nontrivial connected planar graph G. Two years later, L. Kang and J. Yuan proved b(G)8 for every connected planar graph G, and therefore, they confirmed the conjecture for Δ(G)7. In this paper we show that this conjecture is valid for all connected planar graphs of girth g(G)4 and maximum degree Δ(G)5 as well as for all not 3-regular graphs of girth g(G)5. Some further related results and open problems are also presented.  相似文献

A weighted graph (G,w) is a graph G together with a positive weight-function on its vertex set w : V(G)→R>0. The weighted domination number γw(G) of (G,w) is the minimum weight w(D)=∑vDw(v) of a set DV(G) such that every vertex xV(D)−D has a neighbor in D. If ∑vV(G)w(v)=|V(G)|, then we speak of a normed weighted graph. Recently, we proved that
for normed weighted bipartite graphs (G,w) of order n such that neither G nor the complement has isolated vertices. In this paper we will extend these Nordhaus–Gaddum-type results to triangle-free graphs.  相似文献

Choosability conjectures and multicircuits   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This paper starts with a discussion of several old and new conjectures about choosability in graphs. In particular, the list-colouring conjecture, that ch′=χ′ for every multigraph, is shown to imply that if a line graph is (a : b)-choosable, then it is (ta : tb)-choosable for every positive integer t. It is proved that ch(H2)=χ(H2) for many “small” graphs H, including inflations of all circuits (connected 2-regular graphs) with length at most 11 except possibly length 9; and that ch″(C)=χ″(C) (the total chromatic number) for various multicircuits C, mainly of even order, where a multicircuit is a multigraph whose underlying simple graph is a circuit. In consequence, it is shown that if any of the corresponding graphs H2 or T(C) is (a : b)-choosable, then it is (ta : tb)-choosable for every positive integer t.  相似文献

Some results on integral sum graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Let Z denote the set of all integers. The integral sum graph of a finite subset S of Z is the graph (S,E) with vertex set S and edge set E such that for u,vS, uvE if and only if u+vS. A graph G is called an integral sum graph if it is isomorphic to the integral sum graph of some finite subset S of Z. The integral sum number of a given graph G, denoted by ζ(G), is the smallest number of isolated vertices which when added to G result in an integral sum graph. Let x denote the least integer not less than the real x. In this paper, we (i) determine the value of ζ(KnE(Kr)) for r2n/3−1, (ii) obtain a lower bound for ζ(KnE(Kr)) when 2r<2n/3−1 and n5, showing by construction that the bound is sharp when r=2, and (iii) determine the value of ζ(Kr,r) for r2. These results provide partial solutions to two problems posed by Harary (Discrete Math. 124 (1994) 101–108). Finally, we furnish a counterexample to a result on the sum number of Kr,s given by Hartsfiedl and Smyth (Graphs and Matrices, R. Rees (Ed.), Marcel, Dekker, New York, 1992, pp. 205–211).  相似文献

Let C1,…, Cn and C1,…, Cn be two collections of equal disks in the plane, with centers c1,…, cn and c1,…, cn. According to a well-known conjecture of Klee and Wagon (1991), if |cicj| ≥ |cicj| for all i, j, then Area(∩i Ci) ≤ Area(∩i Ci).

We prove this statement in the special case when there is a continuous contraction of {c1,…, cn} onto {c1,…, cn}.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a new heuristic for orthogonal graph drawings, which creates drawings by performing a depth-first search and placing the nodes in the order they are encountered. This DFS-heuristic works for graphs with arbitrarily high degrees, and particularly well for graphs with maximum degree 3. It yields drawings with at most one bend per edge, and a total number of mn+1 bends for a graph with n nodes and m edges; this improves significantly on the best previous bound of m−2 bends.  相似文献
