We consider the parametrized family of equations tt ,u- xx u-au+u 2 2 u=O,x(0,L), with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This equation has finite-dimensional invariant manifolds of solutions. Studying the reduced equation to a four-dimensional manifold, we prove the existence of transversal homoclinic orbits to periodic solutions and of invariant sets with chaotic dynamics, provided that =2, 3, 4,.... For =1 we prove the existence of infinitely many first integrals pairwise in involution.

Summary The problem of flow development from an initially flat velocity profile in the plane Poiseuille and Couette flow geometry is investigated for a viscous fluid. The basic governing momentum and continuity equations are expressed in finite difference form and solved numerically on a high speed digital computer for a mesh network superimposed on the flow field. Results are obtained for the variations of velocity, pressure and resistance coefficient throughout the development region. A characteristic development length is defined and evaluated for both types of flow.Nomenclature h width of channel - L ratio of development length to channel width - p fluid pressure - p 0 pressure at channel mouth - P dimensionless pressure, p/ 2 - P 0 dimensionless pressure at channel mouth - P pressure defect, P 0P - (P)0 pressure defect neglecting inertia - Re Reynolds number, uh/ - u fluid velocity in x-direction - mean u velocity across channel - u 0 wall velocity - U dimensionles u velocity u/ - U c dimensionless centreline velocity - U 0 dimensionless wall velocity - v fluid velocity in y-direction - V dimensionless v velocity, hv/ - x coordinate along channel - X dimensionless x-coordinate, x/h 2 - y coordinate across channel - Y dimensionless y-coordinate, y/h - resistance coefficient, - 0 resistance coefficient neglecting inertia - fluid density - fluid viscosity

The technique to determine by capacitance measurements heat transfer, thermal transport and dielectric properties of fluids introduced recently is now analyzed for a simple system of spherical geometry. The temperature distribution under programmed heat input to a fluid annulus between solid walls is computed by finite difference method for the determination of the capacitance time function of the arrangement. A system of heavy wall structure and heated long enough will produce a capacitance-time curve which is a function of thermal conductivity only. Thermal diffusivity is of influence in thin wall systems. The capacitance change of a heavy wall arrangement is related to the thermal conductivity of the test fluid by a modified Fourier equation. This equation describes the heat flow through the fluid layer but includes the thermal expansion of the solid walls. The change of geometry with T is therefore accounted for. For other multicomposite structures the Fourier equation must be further modified by including the thermal expansion of all materials of the structure and possibly also their compressibilities.

Direct numerical simulation data for the lateral velocity derivative u/y at the centreline of a fully developed turbulent channel flow provide reasonable support for Wyngaard's analysis of the error involved in measuring this quantity using parallel hot wires. Numerical data in the wall region of the channel flow also provide a useful indication of how to select the separation between the wires. Justification for this choice is obtained by comparing several measured statistics of u/y with the corresponding numerical data.

In this paper the fundamental solution of the singular governing equation of plate static bending is taken as the Green's function, which can satisfy the governing equation precisely in the plate region. Based on the principle of superposition, let the function values on the plate boundary, induced by a set of the Green's function sources (including the known sources in the plate region and the unknown sources in the fictitious region), satisfy the prescribed conditions on specially chosen boundary matching points, and the corresponding semi-analytical and semi-numerical solution can be obtained, which is free from the restraint of boundary forms and boundary conditions. The more matching points there are on the boundary, the better the accuracy of results is. Finally, in static bending problems a set of linear algebraic equations has to be computed; in buckling problems the minimum value of buckling eigenvalue equation has to be found; in natural vibration problems the eigenvalues of the frequency equation have to be calculated. Numerical examples are given and the results are compared with those by the analytical method and other methods. It can be seen that they are very close to each other.

An analysis is presented for the primary resonance of a clamped-hinged beam, which occurs when the frequency of excitation is near one of the natural frequencies,n . Three mode interaction (2 31 and 3 1 + 22) is considered and its influence on the response is studied. The case of two mode interaction (2 31) is also considered to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. The straight beam experiencing mid-plane stretching is governed by a nonlinear partial differential equation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system of nonautonomous ordinary differential equations. The method of multiple scales is applied to solve the system. Steady-state responses and their stability are examined. Results of numerical investigations show that there exists no significant difference between both modal interactions' influences on the responses.

The theory of a vibrating-rod viscometer
The paper presents a complete theory for a viscometer based upon the principle of a circular-section rod, immersed in a fluid, performing transverse oscillations perpendicular to its axis. The theory is established as a result of a detailed analysis of the fluid flow around the rod and is subject to a number of criteria which subsequently constrain the design of an instrument. Using water as an example it is shown that a practical instrument can be designed so as to enable viscosity measurement with an accuracy of ±0.1%, although it is noted that many earlier instruments failed to satisfy one or more of the newly-established constraints.Nomenclature A, D constants in equation (46) - A m , B m , C m , D m constants in equations (50) and (51) - A j , B j constants in equation (14) - a j + , a j wavenumbers given by equation (15) - C f drag coefficient defined in equation (53) - c speed of sound - D b drag force of fluid b - D 0 coefficient of internal damping - E extensional modulus - f(z) initial deformation of rod - f(), F m () functions of defined in equation (41) - F force in the rod - force per unit length near t=0 - F dimensionless force per unit length near t=0 - g m amplitude of transient force - G modulus of rigidity - h, h* functions defined by equations (71) and (72) - H functions defined by equation (69) and (70) - I second moment of area - I 0,1, J 0,1, K 0,1 modified Bessel functions - k, k functions defined in equations (2) - L half-length of oscillator - Ma Mach number - m b added mass per unit length of fluid b - m s mass per unit length of solid - n j eigenvalue defined in equations (15) and (16) - R radius of rod - R c radius of container - r radial coordinate - T tension - T visc temperature rise due to heat generation by viscous dissipation - t time - v r , v radial and angular velocity components - y lateral displacement - y 0 initial lateral displacement - y 1, y 2 successive maximum lateral displacement - z axial coordinate - dimensionless tension - dimensionless mass of fluid - dimensionless drag of fluid - amplification factor - logarithmic decrement in a fluid - a , b logarithmic decrement in fluids a and b - 0 logarithmic decrement in vacuo - j logarithmic decrement in mode j in a fluid - spatial resolution of amplitude - v voltage resolution - r, , , s, , increments in R, , , s , , - dimensionless amplitude of oscillation - dimensionless axial coordinate - angular coordinate - f thermal conductivity of fluid - viscosity of fluid - viscosity of fluid calculated on assumption that * - a , b viscosity of fluids a and b - m constants in equation (10) - dimensionless displacement - j j the component of - density of fluid - a , b density of fluids a and b - s density of tube or rod material - dimensionless radial coordinate - * dimensionless radius of container - dimensionless times - spatial component of defined in equation (11) - j , tm jth, mth component of - dimensionless streamfunction - 0, 1 components of in series expansion in powers of - streamfunction - dimensionless frequency (based on ) - angular frequency - 0 angular frequency in absence of fluid and internal damping - j angular frequency in mode j in a fluid - a , b frequencies in fluids a and b

In this paper, the flow of a visco-elastic liquid between two parallel plates has been studied when one plate is stationary and the other plate suddenly starts oscillating. Both finite Fourier sine transform and Laplace transform technique have been employed to solve the basic differential equations. The flow phenomenon has been characterized by the parameters, and and the effects of these on the flow characteristics have been studied through several graphs.Late professor of the department, who died in an accident on 7th July 1978.

In marine geophysical seismological prospecting extensive use is made of towed receiving systems consisting of extended flexible cylinders containing acoustic sensors over which the water flows in the longitudinal direction. The boundary layer pressure fluctuations on the cylinder surface are picked up by the sensors as hydrodynamic noise. This paper is concerned with the study of the energy and spacetime characteristics of the pressure fluctuations in the turbulent boundary layer on an extended flexible cylinder in a longitudinal flow. The pressure fluctuations on the cylinder surface have been investigated experimentally for ReX=(2–4)·107, a dimensionless diameter of the pressure fluctuation sensors d p + =dpu*/=500, where dp is the sensor diameter, u* the dynamic viscosity, and the viscosity coefficient, and frequencies 0.02311.259 (=*/U). The spectral and correlation characteristics of the pressure fluctuations on the surface of the flexible cylinder are found to differ from the corresponding characteristics for a rigid cylinder [1–4].Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i aza, No, 5, pp. 49–54, September–October, 1989.

An analytical approximation for the frozen laminar boundary layer flow of a binary mixture
An analytical approximation is derived for the frozen laminar boundary layer flow of a partially dissociated binary mixture along a strongly cooled flat plate. The concentration at the wall is shown to be a universal function of the Damkohler-number for the wall reaction. The Damkohlernumber also serves as a parameter of shape for the concentration profile which is presented in analytical form. The heat transfer at the wall depending on a conduction and a diffusion flux is derived and discussed. The ratio of these fluxes is expressed as a function of the Damkohler-number if the boundary conditions are known.

Stochastic subsurface transport theories either disregard local dispersion or take it to be constant. We offer an alternative Eulerian-Lagrangian formalism to account for both local dispersion and first-order mass removal (due to radioactive decay or biodegradation). It rests on a decomposition of the velocityv into a field-scale componentv , which is defined on the scale of measurement support, and a zero mean sub-field-scale componentv s , which fluctuates randomly on scales smaller than. Without loss of generality, we work formally with unconditional statistics ofv s and conditional statistics ofv . We then require that, within this (or other selected) working framework,v s andv be mutually uncorrelated. This holds whenever the correlation scale ofv is large in comparison to that ofv s . The formalism leads to an integro-differential equation for the conditional mean total concentration c which includes two dispersion terms, one field-scale and one sub-field-scale. It also leads to explicit expressions for conditional second moments of concentration cc. We solve the former, and evaluate the latter, for mildly fluctuatingv by means of an analytical-numerical method developed earlier by Zhang and Neuman. We present results in two-dimensional flow fields of unconditional (prior) mean uniformv . These show that the relative effect of local dispersion on first and second moments of concentration dies out locally as the corresponding dispersion tensor tends to zero. The effect also diminishes with time and source size. Our results thus do not support claims in the literature that local dispersion must always be accounted for, no matter how small it is. First-order decay reduces dispersion. This effect increases with time. However, these concentration moments c and cc of total concentrationc, which are associated with the scale below, cannot be used to estimate the field-scale concentrationc directly. To do so, a spatial average over the field measurement scale is needed. Nevertheless, our numerical results show that differences between the ensemble moments ofc and those ofc are negligible, especially for nonpoint sources, because the ensemble moments ofc are already smooth enough.

Summary In this paper there are established various conditions which allow a variational formulation of the problem described by the two (systems of) nonlinear differential equationsA(u, ) = q, B(u, ) = and boundary conditions together with the nonlinear algebraic relationsq = C(u, ), = D(u, ). Besides a close relationship is revealed to the principles of virtual displacements and virtual forces which are wellknown in solid mechanics. The systematically constructed variational functional contain many functionals in physics as special cases, mainly those of Green, Castigliano, Hellinger, Reißner, Hu and Washizu in elastomechanics.

The two-dimensional interaction of a single vortex with a thin symmetrical airfoil and its vortex wake has been investigated in a low turbulence wind tunnel having velocity of about 2 m/s in the measuring section. The flow Reynolds number based on the airfoil chord length was 4.5 × 103. The investigation was carried out using a smoke-wire visualization technique with some support of standard hot-wire measurements. The experiment has proved that under certain conditions the vortex-airfoil-wake interaction leads to the formation of new vortices from the part of the wake positioned closely to the vortex. After the formation, the vortices rotate in the direction opposite to that of the incident vortex.List of symbols c test airfoil chord - C vortex generator airfoil chord - TA test airfoil - TE test airfoil trailing edge - TE G vortex generator airfoil trailing edge - t dimensionless time-interval measured from the vortex passage by the test airfoil trailing edge: gDt=(T-T- TEU/c - T time-interval measured from the start of VGA rotation - U free stream velocity - U vortex induced velocity fluctuation - VGA vortex generator airfoil - y distance in which the vortex passes the test airfoil - Z vortex circulation coefficient: Z=/(U · c/2) - vortex generator airfoil inclination angle - vortex circulation - vortex strength: =/2  相似文献

We examine the case when equally sized small moons arrange themselves on the vertices of a regular n-gon for n 7. For n 4, there are at least 3 pure imaginary characteristic exponents, each of which has multiplicity = 1, a surprising result that makes it possible to apply the Lyapunov center theorem to verify the existence of some periodic perturbations. For sufficiently large n, when the regular n-gon is the unique central configuration, the number of families of periodic perturbations is at least equal to 2n – (n + 1)/4, where x is the greatest integer less than or equal to x.

The behavior of the neutral stability curves is investigated for various values of the particle relaxation time and mass concentration 0 100 and 0 f 0.1. It is shown that as increases from zero the flow is at first destabilized and then at >6 becomes stable, while at >40 the stabilizing effect of the dispersed phase grows weaker. It is found that there is a certain interval 10< <40 on which the flow is most stable.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 46–53, January–February, 1986.

Summary This paper is devoted to a study of the flow of a second-order fluid (flowing with a small mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow m, taken negative for a net radial inflow) over a finite rotating disc enclosed within a coaxial cylinderical casing. The effects of the second-order terms are observed to depend upon two dimensionless parameters 1 and 2. Maximum values 1 and 2 of the dimensionless radial distances at which there is no recirculation, for the cases of net radial outflow (m>0) and net radial inflow (m<0) respectively, decrease with an increase in the second-order effects [represented by T(=1+2)]. The velocities at 1 and 2 as well as at some other fixed radii have been calculated for different T and the associated phenomena of no-recirculation/recirculation discussed. The change in flow phenomena due to a reversal of the direction of net radial flow has also been studied. The moment on the rotating disc increases with T.Nomenclature , , z coordinates in a cylindrical polar system - z 0 distance between rotor and stator (gap length) - =/z 0, dimensionless radial distance - =z/z 0, dimensionless axial distance - s = s/z0, dimensionless disc radius - V =(u, v, w), velocity vector - dimensionless velocity components - uniform angular velocity of the rotor - , p fluid density and pressure - P =p/(2 z 02 2 , dimensionless pressure - 1, 2, 3 kinematic coefficients of Newtonian viscosity, elastico-viscosity and cross-viscosity respectively - 1, 2 2/z 0 2 , resp. 3/z 0 2 , dimensionless parameters representing the ratio of second-order and inertial effects - m = , mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow - l a number associated with induced circulatory flow - Rm =m/(z 01), Reynolds number of radial outflow - R l =l/(z 01), Reynolds number of induced circulatory flow - Rz =z 0 2 /1, Reynolds number based on the gap - 1, 2 maximum radii at which there is no recirculation for the cases Rm>0 and Rm<0 respectively - 1(T), 2(T) 1 and 2 for different T - U 1(T) (+) = dimensionless radial velocity, Rm>0 - V 1(T) (+) = , dimensionless transverse velocity, Rm>0 - U 2(T) (–) = , dimensionless radial velocity, Rm=–Rn<0, m=–n - V 2(T) (–) = , dimensionless transverse velocity, Rm<0 - C m moment coefficient

The work describes a way to obtain loss modulus and storage modulus master curves from oscillatory measurements of silicone oils. The loss modulus master curve represents the dependence of the viscous flow behavior on · 0 * and the storage modulus master curve — the dependence of the elastic flow behavior on · 0 * .The relation between the values of the loss modulus and storage modulus master curves (at a certain frequency) is a measurement of the viscoelastic behavior of a system. The G/G-ratio depends on · 0 * which leads to a viscoelastic master curve. The viscoelastic master curve represents the relation between the elastic and viscous oscillatory flow behavior.
