Recent years have witnessed the rapid growth and sale of new products in the field of functional materials, together with a relative decline in new products and new processes in the field of commodity chemicals. Different from the commodity chemicals which arecommonly produced by continuous processes in megaquantities, the functional materials are usually produced bybatch processes in small quantities. The utility of the functional materials depends not only on their chemical composition and purity but also on their structures and surfaces,which are governed by what occurs at a molecular/nano scale rather than at the process scale. Concern over the health effects of fine particles in the ambient environment led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop the first standard for PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 μm) in 1997. The Particle Technology Laboratory at the University of Minnesota has helped to establish the PM2.5 standard by developing many instruments and samplers to perform atmospheric measurements. In this paper, we review various aspects of PM2.5, including its measurement, source apportionment, visibility and health effects, and mitigation. We focus on PM2.s studies in China and where appropriate, compare them with those obtained in the U.S. Based on accurate PM2.5 sampling, chemical analysis, and source apportionment models, the major PM2.5 sources in China have been identified to be coal combustion, motor vehicle emissions, and industrial sources. Atmospheric visibility has been found to correlate well with PM2.s concentration. Sulfate, ammonium, and nitrate carried by PM2.s, commonly found in coal burning and vehicle emissions, are the dominant contributors to regional haze in China. Short-term exposure to PM2.s is strongly associated with the increased risk of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in China. The strategy for PMzs mitigation must be based on reducing the pollutants from the two primary sources of coal-fired power plants and vehicle emissions. Although conventional Particulate Emission Control Devices (PECD) such as electrostatic precipitators in Chinese coal-fired power plants are generally effective for large particles, most of them may not have high collection efficiency of PM2.5. Baghouse filtration is gradually incorporated into the PECD to increase the PM2.5 collection efficiency. By adopting stringent vehicle emissions standard such as Euro 5 and 6, the emissions from vehicles can be gradually reduced over the years. Two methods,namely solid-state grinding and solution crystallization,were used to prepare discontinuous solid solutions of phenanthrene(PHE)-carbazole(CAR)with different PHE and CAR molar fractions.The thermal properties and structure of the solid solutions were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry,hot stage microscopy,and powder X-ray diffraction,and the experimental results revealed that the two compounds could form discontinuous solid solutions where PHE and CAR alternately acted as the host and guest with limited range.This was demonstrated using molecular simulations based on lattice energy calculations using the Materials Studio 8.0 software.The crystal morphology and solubility of the solid solution changed significantly as the molar fraction of the guest molecules changed.  相似文献

The state of bentonite gels at the start of the ageing experiment must be well-defined, and this required the gels to be at a constant surface chemistry condition. This is achieved by allowing the freshly prepared gels to rest for a day. At this state, the yield stress is constant, provided that the gel is at an equilibrium breakdown state after stirring prior to each measurement. This point is also the yield stress at zero aged time. Ageing study then commenced, and the behaviour is generally characterised by an increasing yield stress with wait time. Alkali metal ion type and concentration affect the gel ageing and stability behaviour significantly. The ageing behaviour is most pronounced at low salt concentrations for the smallest and most strongly hydrated cations, Li +and Na +. The yield stress at any given aged time and its rate of increase are generally larger. Coarsening of these suspensions was observed. The opposite is true for the weakly hydrated K +and Cs +ions. At high concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 M Cs, K and Na ions, the gels became unstable over time and phase-separated. The stability time of these weak gels was found to increase with decreasing cation size, Na > K > Cs. This stability time displayed a very strong quantitative correlation with the hydration bond length. Coarsening was also expected, but not observed due to the lack of integrity of these weak aggregates during particle size measurement. The recovery or ageing behaviour was fitted with both the Nguyen–Boger and Leong models.  相似文献

In this paper we study the interaction of a shock wave with a cylindrical vortex. The objective of the study is to characterize the shock and vortex deformations and the mechanism of sound generation. The approach relies on the solution of the two-dimensional Euler equations by means of a high order finite volume weighted-ENO scheme. In order to provide some guidance into the analysis we have also developed an acoustic analogy of the problem by formulating a wave equation for the pressure disturbance that is solved analytically by means of Green's functions. A systematic study has been conducted by investigating the effects of vortex intensity and shock strength. Specifically, we have determined the dependence of shock distortion and vortex compression, and its subsequent nutation upon shock and vortex strengths. The acoustic field generated through shock--vortex interactions has been found to evolve in three stages and to exhibit a three sound quadrupolar directivity. In the early stages of the interaction the sound generated due to shock distortion shows a dipolar character, which then changes to a quadrupolar one due to a restoring mechanism that acts during the interaction of the shock with the rear part of the vortex. In the third stage secondary sounds are formed, which also show a quadrupolar directivity. The acoustic analogy applied to weak shock--vortex interactions also confirms the numerically predicted sound generation mechanism. Received 12 July 1999 and accepted 18 November 1999  相似文献

Before the First World War, Tullio Levi-Civita (1873–1941) was already a well-known mathematician in Italy and abroad, in particular in France. Professor at the University of Padua since 1898, he had published important contributions to tensor calculus, theory of relativity, differential geometry, hydrodynamics, and the three-body problem. In 1918, when he moved to the University of Rome, he created an international school of mathematics. In this paper, we focus on d'Alembert's paradox to which Levi-Civita and some of his Italian and French followers contributed remarkable solutions. This case-study is used to illustrate Levi-Civita's approach to hydrodynamics and its influence in Italy and France, especially in the period 1910–1914.  相似文献

A general discussion of the behavior of the shallow circular arch is presented. It is shown that, irrespective of specific loading or boundary conditions, it is possible to arrive at general conclusions regarding buckling, postbuckling, and imperfection sensitivity. General methods of analysis are established which lead to the determination of points of bifurcation and of postbuckling paths under symmetric loads. Modifications accounting for antisymmetric load components are introduced, with special emphasis on their asymptotic and limit load effect.

A typical numerical example is carried through in detail. The solution is “exact” in the sense of shallow arch theory. Its asymptotic behavior conforms to the asymptotic theory of Koiter.  相似文献

The fourth-order nonlinear Boussinesq water wave equation, which explains the propagation of long waves in shallow water, is explored in this article. We used the Lie symmetry approach to analyze the Lie symmetries and vector fields. Then, by using similarity variables, we obtained the symmetry reductions and soliton wave solutions. In addition, the Kudryashov method and its modification are used to explore the bright and singular solitons while the Hirota bilinear method is effectively used to obtain a form of breather and lump wave solutions. The physical explanation of the extracted solutions was shown with the free choice of different parameters by depicting some 2-D, 3-D, and their corresponding contour plots.

Fractional Dispersion,Lévy Motion,and the MADE Tracer Tests   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The macrodispersion experiments (MADE) at the Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi were conducted in a highly heterogeneous aquifer that violates the basic assumptions of local second-order theories. A governing equation that describes particles that undergo Lévy motion, rather than Brownian motion, readily describes the highly skewed and heavy-tailed plume development at the MADE site. The new governing equation is based on a fractional, rather than integer, order of differentiation. This order (), based on MADE plume measurements, is approximately 1.1. The hydraulic conductivity (K) increments also follow a power law of order =1.1. We conjecture that the heavy-tailed K distribution gives rise to a heavy-tailed velocity field that directly implies the fractional-order governing equation derived herein. Simple arguments lead to accurate estimates of the velocity and dispersion constants based only on the aquifer hydraulic properties. This supports the idea that the correct governing equation can be accurately determined before, or after, a contamination event. While the traditional ADE fails to model a conservative tracer in the MADE aquifer, the fractional equation predicts tritium concentration profiles with remarkable accuracy over all spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

. We find new stable solutions of the Ginzburg‐Landau equation for high κ superconductors with exterior magnetic field h ex. First, we prove the uniqueness of the Meissner‐type solution. Then, we prove, in the case of a disc domain, the coexistence of branches of solutions with n vortices of degree one, for any n not too high and for a certain range of h ex; and describe these branches. We show how to formulate two-point boundary value problems to compute laminar channel, tube, and Taylor–Couette flow profiles for some complex viscoelastic fluid models of differential type. The models examined herein are the Pom-Pom Model [McLeish and Larson 42:81–110, (1998)] the Pompon Model [Öttinger 40:317–321, (2001)] and the Two Coupled Maxwell Modes Model (Beris and Edwards 1994). For the two-mode Upper-Convected Maxwell Model, we calculate analytical solutions for the three flow geometries and use the solutions to validate the numerical methodology. We illustrate how to calculate the velocity, pressure, conformation tensor, backbone orientation tensor, backbone stretch, and extra stress profiles for various models. For the Pom-Pom Model, we find that the two-point boundary value problem is numerically unstable, which is due to the aphysical non-monotonic shear stress vs shear rate prediction of the model. For the other two models, we compute laminar flow profiles over a wide range of pressure drops and inner cylinder velocities. The volumetric flow rate and the nonlinear viscoelastic material properties on the boundaries of the flow geometries are determined as functions of the applied pressure drop, allowing easy analysis of experimentally measurable quantities.  相似文献

Bentonite clay is a vital ingredient of drilling mud. The time-dependent and high shear thinning yield stress behaviour of drilling mud is essential for maintaining wellbore stability and to remove cuttings, cool and clean the drill bit of debris. As-prepared 3, 5 and 7 wt.% bentonite clay slurries displayed time-dependent behaviour where the yield stress (measured after quick stirring) decreased with time of rest. An equilibrium value is reached after 24 h. Despite the low solids concentration, the yield stress is already relatively high and is displayed at all pH level. The yield stress is maximum at pH 2 and minimum at pH ∼ 7. This yield stress is due to the formation of gel structure by the swelling clay particles. However the addition of phosphate additives such as (PO3)19 − , (P3O10)5 −  and (P2O7)4 −  completely dispersed the clay slurries at pH above 6. At pH below 6, yield stress is still present but is 3-folds smaller than that of the pure bentonite slurry. With phosphate additives, the magnitude of the critical zeta potential at the complete dispersion pH is ca 48 mV. However for the pure bentonite, the slurry remained flocculated at zeta potential of >50 mV in magnitude. Interestingly, (P2O7)4 −  anions is more effective than the other two phosphate additives in reducing the yield stress at low pH, ∼ 2.0.  相似文献

The Stroh formalism for two-dimensional deformation of an anisotropic elastic material does not give the stress ij explicitly in a symmetric form. It does not give an explicit expression for the strain ij at al. Mantic and Paris [1] have recently derived an explicit symmetric representation of stress. We present here a new and elementary derivation that is more straight forward and transparent. The derivation does not require consideration of the surface traction or the normalization of the Stroh eigenvectors. The new derivation also provides an explicit symmetric representation of strain. Moreover, it allows us to deduce two of the three Barnett–Lothe tensors L, S [2] and the associated tensors L ( ), S ( ) [3], resulting in a physical interpretation of these tensors and the component ( L S )21.  相似文献

The Poynting effect, in which a cylinder elongates or contracts axially under torsion, is an important nonlinear phenomenon in soft materials. In this paper, analytical solutions are obtained for homogeneous and bi-layered cylinders under torsion, axial and combined loadings, employing second-order elasticity and Lagrangian equilibrium equations. Explicit parameters for judging the sign of the Poynting effect are given. It is found that the effect in a soft composite may be significantly amplified over that in homogeneous materials and that it is strongly influenced by the interface position and by the material configuration in the composite. A coupled axial force–twist effect under combined loading, i.e., the twist of a torsionally loaded cylinder can be affected by the axial loading, is also found. Comparison of the predictions with the torque-tension-twist data for cardiac papillary muscles shows reasonable agreement. The solutions also provide the basis for a mechanistic method of determining third-order elastic constants.  相似文献

Recent advances in the experimental and theoretical study of dynamics of neuronal electrical firing activities are reviewed. Firstly, some experimental phenomena of neuronal irregular firing patterns, especially chaotic and stochastic firing patterns, are presented, and practical nonlinear time analysis methods are introduced to distinguish deterministic and stochastic mechanism in time series. Secondly, the dynamics of electrical firing activities in a single neuron is concerned, namely, fast-slow dynamics analysis for classification and mechanism of various bursting patterns, one- or two-parameter bifurcation analysis for transitions of firing patterns, and stochastic dynamics of firing activities (stochastic and coherence resonances, integer multiple and other firing patterns induced by noise, etc.). Thirdly, different types of synchronization of coupled neurons with electrical and chemical synapses are discussed. As noise and time delay are inevitable in nervous systems, it is found that noise and time delay may induce or enhance synchronization and change firing patterns of coupled neurons. Noise-induced resonance and spatiotemporal patterns in coupled neuronal networks are also demonstrated. Finally, some prospects are presented for future research. In consequence, the idea and methods of nonlinear dynamics are of great significance in exploration of dynamic processes and physiological functions of nervous systems.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to investigate the fundamental problems of retardation and radiation caused by non-uniformly moving point sources using the theories of electrodynamics and elastodynamics. This paper investigates and compares the retarded electromagnetic fields and the retarded elastodynamic fields. For the non-uniform motion of a general point source, the Liénard–Wiechert type potentials and the radiation and nonradiation fields are derived for a point charge and for a point force.  相似文献
