Liquid film thickness inside two swirl injectors for direct injection (DI) gasoline engines was measured at different injection pressure conditions ranging from 2.0 to 7.0 MPa and then previous analytical and empirical equations were examined from the experimental results. Based on the evaluation, a new equation for the liquid film thickness inside the swirl injectors was introduced. A direct photography using two real scale transparent nozzles and a pulsed light source was employed to measure the liquid film thickness inside the swirl injectors. The error in the liquid film thickness measurement, generated from different refractive indices among transparent nozzle, fuel and air, was estimated and corrected based on the geometric optics. Two injectors which have different nozzle diameter and nozzle length were applied to introduce a more general empirical equation for the liquid film thickness inside the pressure swirl injectors. The results showed that the liquid film thickness remains constant at the injection pressures for direct injection gasoline engines while the ratio of nozzle length to nozzle diameter (L/D) shows significant effect on the liquid film thickness. The previously introduced analytical and empirical equations for relatively low injection pressure swirl injectors overestimated the effect of injection pressure at the operating range of high pressure swirl injectors and, in addition, the effect of L/D ratio and swirler geometry was rarely considered. A new empirical equation was suggested based on the experimental results by taking into account the effects of fuel properties, nozzle diameter, nozzle length and swirler geometry.  相似文献

The gasoline spray characteristics of a pressure-swirl injector were investigated with various exit plane tilts. The analysis focused on the correlation between tilt angle and flow angle. Mie-scattering technique and phase Doppler anemometry were employed to analyze the macroscopic spray development and droplet size distribution of the spray. An analytical method for mass flux estimation was applied to understand the velocity distribution at the nozzle exit. The results showed that the spray shape and velocity distribution of the spray were more asymmetrical at high tilt angles. In particular, an opened hollow cone spray was formed when the tilt angle is greater than the complementary flow angle. The pressure drop inside the spray, one of the crucial factors for the swirl spray collapse at various surrounding conditions, was attenuated in this opened hollow cone spray since the pressure inside the spray was assimilated to the surrounding air pressure. The spray collapse at high fuel temperature and back pressure conditions did not appear when the tilt angle is larger than the complementary flow angle due to the reduced pressure drop inside the spray. However, tilt angle should be optimized to fulfill the requirements of spray robustness and avoid the locally rich area. The droplet size of 70° tilted nozzle spray shows a value similar to that of the original swirl spray in the plane that includes nozzle axis and the major axis of exit surface ellipse (Major axis plane) while it shows an increased value in the plane that includes nozzle axis and the minor axis of exit surface ellipse (Minor axis plane).  相似文献

Atomization of liquids with high viscosity is always a challenge, especially when small diameter droplets and high liquid flow rates are simultaneously required. In the present research, the performance of a Venturi–vortex twin-fluid swirl nozzle is examined, attending to its capabilities to generate droplets with diameters below 20 µm when atomizing pure glycerin at room temperature. In this nozzle, air is injected tangentially in a central convergent section, and discharges suctioning the liquid fed to a coaxial chamber, here using a gear pump. The resulting spray is visualized and analyzed. Droplet size distributions are measured with a laser diffractometer. As expected, droplet diameter increases with liquid flow rate, and quickly diminishes when air flow rate is increased. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) below 15 µm can be obtained even when atomizing pure glycerin. However, these values are obtained for relatively low glycerin flow rates (∼5 l/h), and with rather wide distributions. For 10 l/h and an air-to-liquid mass flow rate ratio (ALR) of 13.7 more than 26% of the glycerin volume is atomized in droplets smaller than 20 µm. Liquid ligaments are observed near the nozzle exit, but they tend to break up while moving downstream.  相似文献

The Large Eddy Simulation model was introduced to study the micro spray characteristics under ultra-high injection pressure (>220 MPa). EFS8400 spray test platform was set up to verify the accuracy of the numerical model. The mechanisms of micro spray characteristics were studied intensively under different injection pressures (180 MPa, 240 MPa) and nozzle diameters (0.1 mm, 0.16 mm). The results indicated that the micro turbulence vortex structures can be captured, especially in the liquid spray core area. Large Eddy Simulation model combined with the small grid size of 0.25 mm show a huge advantage in studying the micro spray characteristics under ultra-high injection pressure; The turbulence vorticity and spray velocity for injection pressure of 240 MPa are more intensive than that of 180 MPa, and also the ultra-high injection pressure can contribute to strong turbulence disturbance between spray and surrounding air, which is helpful to improve the quality of spray; The spray velocity field extended wider for the diameter of 0.16 mm, and also the values of velocity in the spray center is higher than that of the diameter of 0.1 mm; The entrainment vortex appeared at the edge of the large velocity gradient between spray and surrounding air, and the higher velocity gradient for ultra-high injection pressure (240 MPa) between the spray and air is easier to increase the generation of entrainment vortex in the downstream of the spray, which can significantly increase the quality of spray and atomization.  相似文献

A special spray model is applied to study the spray behavior with high injection pressure and micro-hole nozzle. To reveal the cavitation in diesel nozzle and its influence on spray and atomization, the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is adopted to detect the cavitation, and then the special spray model coupling the cavitation is build. From research results, three important conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, the cavitation flow can raise the effective velocity at the nozzle exit and such effect become even more obvious with higher injection pressure, e.g.180 MPa. Secondly, the applied spray model is in good agreement with the spray characteristics and images obtained from the EFS8400 spray test platform. Thirdly, the cavitation with high injection pressure and micro-hole nozzle can increase the spray cone angle and reduce the spray penetration; the cavitation intensity has a great impact on the spray velocity field and vorticity intensity, especially at the initial spray field under the condition of high injection pressure.  相似文献

Future fuel stocks for spark-ignition engines are expected to include a significant portion of bio-derived components with quite different chemical and physical properties to those of liquid hydrocarbons. State-of-the-art high-pressure multi-hole injectors for latest design direct-injection spark-ignition engines offer some great benefits in terms of fuel atomisation, as well as flexibility in in-cylinder fuel targeting by selection of the exact number and angle of the nozzle’s holes. However, in order to maximise such benefits for future spark-ignition engines and minimise any deteriorating effects with regards to exhaust emissions, it is important to avoid liquid fuel impingement onto the cylinder walls and take into consideration various types of biofuels. This paper presents results from the use of heat flux sensors to characterise the locations and levels of liquid fuel impingement onto the engine’s liner walls when injected from a centrally located multi-hole injector with an asymmetric pattern of spray plumes. Ethanol, butanol, iso-octane, gasoline and a blend of 10% ethanol with 90% gasoline (E10) were tested and compared. The tests were performed in the cylinder of a direct-injection spark-ignition engine at static conditions (i.e. quiescent chamber at 1.0 bar) and motoring conditions (at full load with inlet plenum pressure of 1.0 bar) with different engine temperatures in order to decouple competing effects. The collected data were analysed to extract time-resolved signals, as well as mean and standard deviation levels of peak heat flux. The results were interpreted with reference to in-cylinder spray formation characteristics, as well as fuel evaporation rates obtained by modelling. In addition, high-speed images of single droplets of fuel impinging onto the array of the heat flux sensor were acquired with simultaneous sampling of the heat flux signal in an attempt to provide further interpretation. The single droplet tests showed ability of the signals to quantify droplet mass impinged on the sensor. Analysis of the peak heat flux at static engine conditions quantified values of fuel temperature at impingement in agreement with the wet bulb temperatures predicted by the droplet evaporation model. Comparison of the static and motoring engine heat flux signals around the bore showed the effect of the intake flow on the spray’s pattern at impingement and demonstrated fuel presence on the liner that survived at exhaust valve open timing. The general behaviour was different for the alcohols to that of the hydrocarbons, with ethanol exhibiting the effect of its high latent heat on the signals and butanol exhibiting effects related to poor atomization and slow evaporation.  相似文献

The tendency of today’s fuel injection systems to reach injection pressures up to 3000 bar in order to meet forthcoming emission regulations may significantly increase liquid temperatures due to friction heating; this paper identifies numerically the importance of fuel pressurization, phase-change due to cavitation, wall heat transfer and needle valve motion on the fluid heating induced in high pressure Diesel fuel injectors. These parameters affect the nozzle discharge coefficient (Cd), fuel exit temperature, cavitation volume fraction and temperature distribution within the nozzle. Variable fuel properties, being a function of the local pressure and temperature are found necessary in order to simulate accurately the effects of depressurization and heating induced by friction forces. Comparison of CFD predictions against a 0-D thermodynamic model, indicates that although the mean exit temperature increase relative to the initial fuel temperature is proportional to (1  Cd2) at fixed needle positions, it can significantly deviate from this value when the motion of the needle valve, controlling the opening and closing of the injection process, is taken into consideration. Increasing the inlet pressure from 2000 bar, which is the pressure utilized in today’s fuel systems to 3000 bar, results to significantly increased fluid temperatures above the boiling point of the Diesel fuel components and therefore regions of potential heterogeneous fuel boiling are identified.  相似文献

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of a plain orifice nozzle issuing pressurized high-temperature liquid hydrocarbon, in order to simulate injection of aviation fuel after being used as coolant in an active cooling system in a hypersonic flight vehicle. The fuel was heated to 553 K (280°C) using an induction heater, at an upstream pressure of up to 1.0 MPa, and injected to atmospheric pressure conditions through a sharp-edged orifice of diameter 0.7 mm and length 4.3 mm. It has been observed that the isothermal lines on the plane of the mass flow rate versus the square root of the pressure drop (ΔP) were clearly affected by increased fuel temperatures, and the discharge coefficient (Cd) decreased sharply with increasing fuel injection temperature (Tinj) above the fuel boiling point of 460 K. The Reynolds number (Re) for three ΔPs with respect to Tinj reached maxima and then began to decrease as Tinj increased for each ΔP case, and the fuel temperature of maximum Re at a given pressure condition increased as ΔP increased. The effects of cavitation on the hydraulic characteristics of the high temperature fuel were explored by representing Cd with respect to three cavitation numbers and dissipation efficiency. The behaviors of Cd showed a clear dependency on cavitation number, and all of the results collapsed to a single curve, regardless of ΔP. In addition, the curve indicated that the Cd characteristics was divided into non-cavitating and cavitating regions by the critical cavitation numbers near the fuel boiling point, and a sharp decrease in Cd was found to be typical in the cavitating region. The relationship between Cd and Re showed that when Tinj exceeded the boiling point the high temperature liquid jets experienced a sharp decrease in Cd at a determined Reynolds number, due to the collapse of the mass flow rate induced by the choked cavitaiton.  相似文献

Centrifugal spray injected at various angles in gas crossflow has been studied experimentally using PIV visualization system and image-processing techniques. Experiments were carried out inside a rectangular duct (95 mm × 95 mm in cross-section) at ambient temperature and pressure, with different gas Reynolds numbers (vary from 12,900 to 45,000) and three injection angles (60°, 90° and 120°). The spray angle of the centrifugal nozzle is 80°, with D32 of 80 μm. The instantaneous images of droplets distribution and the values of the line-averaged D32 at different positions on the cross-sections along the flow field for each condition were obtained, and their flow field configurations were achieved. Quantitative assessments of mixing degree between two phases for different injection angles were determined using a spatial unmixedness parameter. It is found that the addition of droplets into the gas crossflow enhanced the turbulence intensity of the gas crossflow and caused different-scale vortices. The flow field structure, to a great extent, is dependent on the injection angle. The entrainment and centrifugal force of large vortex lead to uneven droplet distribution and moreover influence the mixing of droplets and gas crossflow. A better mixing result can be obtained with the injection angle of nozzles of 60°.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to investigate the dependence of effervescent spray unsteadiness on operational conditions and atomizer internal design by the ideal spray theory of Edwards and Marx. The convergent–divergent effervescent atomizer spraying water with air as atomizing medium in the “outside-in” gas injection was used in this study. Results demonstrated that droplet formation process at various air to liquid ratio (ALR) led to the spray unsteadiness and all droplet size classes exhibited unsteadiness behavior in spray. The spray unsteadiness reduced quickly at ALR of 3% and decreased moderately at ALR of other values as the axial distance increased. When the axial distance was 200 mm, the spray unsteadiness reduced dramatically with the increase in radial distance, but lower spray unsteadiness at the center of spray and higher spray unsteadiness at the edge of spray were shown as the axial distance increased. The spray unsteadiness at the center region of spray increased with the injection pressure. Low spray unsteadiness and good atomization performance can be obtained when the diameter of incline aeration holes increased at ALR of 10%. Although short mixing chamber with large discharge orifice diameter for convergent–divergent effervescent atomizer produced good atomization, the center region of spay showed high spray unsteadiness and maybe formed the droplet clustering.  相似文献

In-line flow segregators based on axial induction of swirling flow have important applications in chemical, process and petroleum production industries. In the later, the segregation of gas bubbles and/or water droplets dispersed into viscous oil by swirling pipe flow may be beneficial by either providing a pre-separation mechanism (bubble and/or drop coalescer) or, in the case of water-in-oil dispersions, by causing a water-lubricated flow pattern to establish in the pipe (friction reduction). Works addressing these applications are rare in the literature. In this paper, the features and capabilities of swirling pipe flow axially induced by a vane-type swirl generator were investigated both numerically and experimentally. The numerical analysis has been carried out using a commercial CFD package for axial Reynolds numbers less than 2000. Pressure drop, tangential and axial velocity components as well as swirl intensity along a 5 cm i.d. size and 3 m long pipe were computed. Single phase flow experiments have been performed using a water–glycerin solution of 54 mPa s viscosity and 1210 kg/m3 density as working fluid. The numerical predictions of the pressure drop were compared with the experimental data and agreement could be observed within the range of experimental conditions. The experiments confirmed that swirl flow leads to much higher friction factors compared with theoretical values for non-swirl (i.e. purely axial) flow. Furthermore, the addition of a conical trailing edge reduces vortex breakdown. Visualization of the two-phase swirling flow pattern was achieved by adding different amounts of air to the water–glycerin solution upstream the swirl generator.  相似文献

The two-phase flow of a hydrophobic ionic liquid and water was studied in capillaries made of three different materials (two types of Teflon, FEP and Tefzel, and glass) with sizes between 200 μm and 270 μm. The ionic liquid was 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}amide, with density and viscosity of 1420 kg m−3 and 0.041 kg m−1 s−1, respectively. Flow patterns and pressure drop were measured for two inlet configurations (T- and Y-junction), for total flow rates of 0.065–214.9 cm3 h−1 and ionic liquid volume fractions from 0.05 to 0.8. The continuous phase in the glass capillary depended on the fluid that initially filled the channel. When water was introduced first, it became the continuous phase with the ionic liquid forming plugs or a mixture of plugs and drops within it. In the Teflon microchannels, the order that fluids were introduced did not affect the results and the ionic liquid was always the continuous phase. The main patterns observed were annular, plug, and drop flow. Pressure drop in the Teflon microchannels at a constant ionic liquid flow rate, was found to increase as the ionic liquid volume fraction decreased, and was always higher than the single phase ionic liquid value at the same flow rate as in the two-phase mixture. However, in the glass microchannel during plug flow with water as the continuous phase, pressure drop for a constant ionic liquid flow rate was always lower than the single phase ionic liquid value. A modified plug flow pressure drop model using a correlation for film thickness derived for the current fluids pair showed very good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

The rapid development of two-phase microfluidic devices has triggered the demand for a detailed understanding of the flow characteristics inside microchannel heat sinks to advance the cooling process of micro-electronics. The present study focuses on the experimental investigation of pressure drop characteristics and flow visualization of a two-phase flow in a silicon microchannel heat sink. The microchannel heat sink consists of a rectangular silicon chip in which 45 rectangular microchannels were chemically etched with a depth of 276 μm, width of 225 μm, and a length of 16 mm. Experiments are carried out for mass fluxes ranging from 341 to 531 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes from 60.4 to 130.6 kW/m2 using FC-72 as the working fluid. Bubble growth and flow regimes are observed using high speed visualization. Three major flow regimes are identified: bubbly, slug, and annular. The frictional two-phase pressure drop increases with exit quality for a constant mass flux. An assessment of various pressure drop correlations reported in the literature is conducted for validation. A new general correlation is developed to predict the two-phase pressure drop in microchannel heat sinks for five different refrigerants. The experimental pressure drops for laminar-liquid laminar-vapor and laminar-liquid turbulent-vapor flow conditions are predicted by the new correlation with mean absolute errors of 10.4% and 14.5%, respectively.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of experimental studies on atomization of the emulsions flowing through twin-fluid atomizers obtained by the use of the digital microphotography method. The main elements of the test installation were: nozzle, reservoir, pump and measurement units of liquid flow. The photographs were taken by a digital camera with automatic flash at exposure time of 1/8000 s and subsequently analyzed using Image Pro-Plus. The oils used were mineral oils 20–90, 20–70, 20–50 and 20–30. The studies were performed at flow rates of liquid phase changed from 0.0014 to 0.011 (dm3/s) and gas phase changed from 0.28 to 1.4 (dm3/s), respectively. The analysis of photos shows that the droplets being formed during the liquid atomization have very different sizes. The smallest droplets have diameters of the order of 10 μm. The experimental results showed that the changes in physical properties of a liquid phase lead to the significant changes in the spray characteristics. The analysis of the photos of water and emulsions atomization process showed that the droplet sizes are dependent on gas and liquid flow rates, construction of nozzle and properties of liquid. The differences between characteristics of atomization for water and emulsions have been observed. Analysis of photos on forming the droplets in air–water and air-emulsions systems showed that droplets are bigger in air-emulsion system (at the same value of gas to liquid mass ratio). The values of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) increased with increase of volume fraction of oil in emulsion. The droplet size increased with emulsion viscosity.  相似文献

A detailed numerical simulation of kerosene spray combustion was carried out on a partially premixed, prevaporized, three-dimensional configuration. The focus was on the flame temperature profile dependency on the length of the pre-vaporization zone. The results were analyzed and compared to experimental data. A fundamental study was performed to observe the temperature variation and flame flashback. Changes were made to the droplet diameter, kerosene flammability limits, a combustion model parameter and the location of the combustion initialization. Investigations were performed for atmospheric pressure, inlet air temperature of 90 °C and a global equivalence ratio of 0.7. The simulations were carried out using the Eulerian Lagrangian procedure under a fully two-way coupling. The Bray–Moss–Libby model was adjusted to account for the partially premixed combustion.  相似文献

Several laser diagnostic measurement techniques have been applied to study the lean premixed natural gas/air flames of an industrial swirl burner. This was made possible by equipping the burner with an optical combustion chamber that was installed in the high-pressure test rig facility at the DLR Institute of Combustion Technology in Stuttgart. The burner was operated with preheated air at various operating conditions with pressures up to p = 6 bar and a maximum thermal power of P = 1 MW.The instantaneous planar flow field inside the combustor was studied with particle image velocimetry (PIV). Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of OH radicals on a single-shot basis was used to determine the shape and the location of the flame front as well as the spatial distribution of reaction products. 1D laser Raman spectroscopy was successfully applied for the measurement of the temperature and the concentration of major species under realistic gas turbine conditions.Results of the flow field analysis show the shape and the size of the main flow regimes: the inflow region, the inner and the outer recirculation zone. The highly turbulent flow field of the inner shear layer is found to be dominated by small and medium sized vortices. High RMS fluctuations of the flow velocity in the exhaust gas indicate the existence of a rotating exhaust gas swirl. From the PLIF images it is seen that the primary reactions happened in the shear layers between inflow and the recirculation zones and that the appearance of the reaction zones changed with flame parameters. The results of the multiscalar Raman measurements show a strong variation of the local mixture fraction allowing conclusions to be drawn about the premix quality. Furthermore, mixing effects of unburnt fuel and air with fully reacted combustion products are studied giving insights into the processes of the turbulence–chemistry interaction.  相似文献

A water-air impinging jets atomizer is investigated in this study, which consists of flow visualization using high speed photography and mean droplet size and velocity distribution measurements of the spray using Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA). Topological structures and break up details of the generated spray in the far and near fields are presented with and without air jet and for an impinging angle of 90°. Spray angle increases with the water jet velocity, air flow rate and impinging angle. PDA results indicate that droplet size is smallest in the spray center, with minimum value of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 µm at the air flow rate of Qm = 13.50 g/min. SMD of droplets increases towards the spray outer region gradually to about 120 µm. The mean droplet velocity component W along the air-jet axis is highest in the spray center and decreases gradually with increasing distance from the spray center. SMD normalized by the air nozzle diameter is found firstly to decrease with gas-to-liquid mass ratio (GLR) and air-to-liquid momentum ratio (ALMR) and then remain almost constant. Its increasing with aerodynamic Weber number indicates an exponential variation. The study sheds light on the performance of water-air impinging jets atomizers providing useful information for future CFD simulation works.  相似文献

A new prediction method for the frictional pressure drop in annular two-phase flow is presented. This new prediction method focuses on the aerodynamic interaction between the liquid film and the gas core in annular flows, and explicitly takes into account the asymmetric liquid film distribution in the tube cross section induced by the action of gravity in horizontal tubes operated at low mass fluxes. The underlying experimental database contains 6291 data points from the literature with 13 fluid combinations (both single-component saturated fluids such as water, carbon dioxide and refrigerants R12, R22, R134a, R245fa, R410a, R1234ze, and two-component fluids such as water-argon, water-nitrogen, alcohol-argon, water plus alcohol-argon and water-air), vertical and horizontal tubes and annuli with diameters from 3 mm to 25 mm, and both adiabatic and evaporating flow conditions. The new prediction method is very simple to implement and use, is physically based and outperforms existing pressure drop correlations (mean absolute error of 12.9%, and 7 points out of 10 captured to within ±15%).  相似文献

 The paper describes the atomisation process of a liquid in an axissymmetric shear layer formed through the interaction of turbulent coaxial jets (respectively, inner and outer jets), with and without swirl, in a model airblast prefilming atomiser. The atomisation process and spray quality was studied using different visualisation techniques, namely laser shadowgraphy and digital image acquisition. The experiments were conducted for different liquid flow rates, Reynolds numbers ranging from 6600 to 66000 and 27300 to 92900 for the inner and outer air flows, respectively, for different outer flow swirl levels, and two liquid film thicknesses −0.2 and 0.7 mm. All the tests were carried out at atmospheric pressure and using water. The results include the analysis of the film structure at break-up and of the break-up length, and suggest that the deterioration of the liquid film close to the atomising edge exhibits a periodic behaviour and is mainly dependent on the inner air velocity. Film thickness strongly affects the time and length scales of the break-up process for the lower range of air velocities. For higher inner air velocities, the break-up length and time become less dependent on liquid flow rate and initial film thickness. Received: 14 March 1997/Accepted: 27 October 1997  相似文献
