Density-dependent parametrization models of the nucleon-meson coupfing constants, including the isovector scalar δ-field, are applied to asymmetric nuclear matter. The nuclear equation of state (EOS) and the neutron star properties are studied in a relativistic Lagrangian density, using the relativistic mean field (RMF) hadron theory. It is known that the δ-field in the constant coupling scheme leads to a larger repulsion in dense neutron-rich matter and to a definite splitting of proton and neutron effective masses, finally influences the stability of the neutron stars. We use density-dependent models of the nucleon-meson couplings to study the properties of neutron star matter and to reexamine the (~-field effects in asymmetric nuclear matter. Our calculation shows that the stability conditions of the neutron star matter can be improved in presence of the δ-meson in the density-dependent models of the coupling constants. The EOS of nuclear matter strongly depends on the density dependence of the interactions.

Because of the complicacy of the interaction between the nucleon-nucleon for high density matters, up to now the equation of state (EOS) of the unsymmetrical high-density nuclear matter is still uncertain. In order to investigate the imprint on the global properties by some special part of the EOS, we designedly modify part of the EOS and explore the corresponding effect on the stellar properties, especially on the radius of the typical neutron star (1.4 M) and the maximum stellar mass of the neutron star sequence for a given EOS. It is further proved by our calculation that the EOS around 2 times of the saturation nuclear density has an obvious imprint on the stellar radius of a typical neutron star. In addition, we also investigate the dependence of the mass-radius curve and its slope (dM/dR) on the EOS. It is found that the slope (dM/dR) is mainly determined by the EOS above the saturation nuclear density. In fact, the investigations above will provide some useful theoretical reference. This is expected to conversely constrain the EOS of dense matter by using the future astronomic observation data of neutron star.

An equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter with explicit inclusion of a spin-isospin dependent force is constructed from a finite range, momentum and density dependent effective interaction. This EOS is found to be in good agreement with those obtained from more sophisticated models for unpolarised nuclear matter. Introducing spin degrees of freedom, it is found that it is possible for neutron matter to undergo a ferromagnetic transition at densities realisable in the core of neutron stars. The maximum mass and the surface magnetic field of the neutron star can be fairly explained in this model. Since finding quark matter rather than hadronic matter at the core of neutron stars is a possibility, the proposed EOS is also applied to the study of hybrid stars. It is found using the bag model picture that one can in principle describe both the mass as well as the surface magnetic field of hybrid stars satisfactorily.

Recently there have been important developments in the determination of neutron star masses which put severe constraints on the composition and equation of state (EOS) of the neutron star matter. Here we study the effect of quark and nuclear matter mixed phase on mass radius relationship of neutron stars employing recent models from two classes of EOS’s and discuss their implications.

The equation of state (EOS) of dense matter are constructed covering a wide range of temperature, proton fraction, and density for the use of supernova simulations. The relativistic mean field theory is employed to describe the uniform matter, while the Thomas Fermi approximation is adopted to describe the non uniform matter. The EOS of neutron star matter is discussed with the inclusion of hyperons. It is found that the EOS at high density can be significantly softened by the inclusion of hyperons. The 1S0 superfluidity of Λ hyperons may exist in massive neutron stars.

We investigate the properties of hybrid stars consisting of quark matter in the core and hadron matter in outer region. The hadronic equation of state (EOS) is calculated by using nonlinear Walecka model. Strange baryons are included in the hadronic EOS calculation. The chiral colour dielectric (CCD) model, in which quarks are confined dynamically, is used to calculate quark matter EOS. We find that the phase transition from hadron to quark matter is possible in a narrow range of the parameters of nonlinear Walecka and CCD models. The transition is strong or weak first order depending on the parameters used. The EOS thus obtained, is used to study the properties of hybrid stars. We find that the calculated hybrid star properties are similar to those of pure neutron stars.

K- condensation and quark deconfinement phase transitions in neutron stars are investigated. We use the modified quark-meson coupling model for hadronic phase and the MIT bag model for quark phase. With the equation of state (EOS) solved self-consistently, we discuss the properties of neutron stars. We find that the EOS of pure hadron matter with condensed K- phase should be ruled out by the redshift for star EXO0748-676, while EOS containing unpaired quark matter phase with B1/4 being about 180 MeV could be consistent with both this observation and the best measured mass of star PSR 1913+16. But if the recent inferred massive star among Terzan 5 with M>1.68M is confirmed, all the present EOSes with condensed phase and deconfined phase would be ruled out.

Whether or not the deconfined quark phase exists in neutron star cores is an open question. We use two realistic effective quark models, the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and the modified quark-meson coupling model, to describe the neutron star matter. We show that the modified quark-meson coupling model, which is fixed by reproducing the saturation properties of nuclear matter, can be consistent with the experimental constraints from nuclear collisions. After constructing possible hybrid equations of state (EOSes) with an unpaired or color superconducting quark phase with the assumption of the sharp hadron-quark phase transition, we discuss the observational constraints from neutron stars on the EOSes. It is found that the neutron star with pure quark matter core is unstable and the hadronic phase with hyperons is denied, while hybrid EOSes with a two-flavor color superconducting phase or unpaired quark matter phase are both allowed by the tight and most reliable constraints from two stars Ter 5 I and EXO 0748-676. And the hybrid EOS with an unpaired quark matter phase is allowed even compared with the tightest constraint from the most massive pulsar star PSR J0751+1807.

Neutron stars with isovector scalar correlations
Neutron stars with the isovector scalar δ-field are studied in the framework of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach in a pure-nucleon-plus-lepton scheme. The δ-field leads to a larger repulsion in dense neutron-rich matter and to a definite splitting of proton and neutron effective masses. Both features are influencing the stability conditions of the neutron stars. Two parametrizations for the effective nonlinear Lagrangian density are used to calculate the nuclear equation of state (EOS) and the neutron star properties, and compared to correlated Dirac-Brueckner results. We conclude that in order to reproduce reasonable nuclear structure and neutron star properties within a RMF approach, a density dependence of the coupling constants is required.

The relativistic mean field(RMF) FSUGold model extended to include hyperons is employed to study the properties of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields. The chaotic magnetic field approximation is utilized. The effect of anomalous magnetic moments(AMMs) is also investigated. It is shown that the equation of state(EOS)of neutron star matter is stiffened by the presence of the magnetic field, which increases the maximum mass of a neutron star by around 6%.The AMMs only have a small influence on the EOS of neutron star matter, and increase the maximum mass of a neutron star by 0.02M_(sun).Neutral particles are spin polarized due to the presence of the AMMs.

Deconfinement phase transition and condensation of Goldstone bosons in neutron star matter are investigated in a chiral hadronic model (also referred as to the FST model) for the hadronic phase (HP) and in the color-flavor-locked (CFL) quark model for the deconfined quark phase. It is shown that the hadronic-CFL mixed phase (MP) exists in the center of neutron stars with a small bag constant, while the CFL quark matter cannot appear in neutron stars when a large bag constant is taken. Color superconductivity softens the equation of state (EOS) and decreases the maximum mass of neutron stars compared with the unpaired quark matter. The K0 condensation in the CFL phase has no remarkable contribution to the EOS and properties of neutron star matter. The EOS and the properties of neutron star matter are sensitive to the bag constant B, the strange quark mass ms and the color superconducting gap Δ. Increasing B and ms or decreasing Δ can stiffen the EOS which results in the larger maximum masses of neutron stars.

Hybrid stars composed of a strange matter core surrounded by neutron matter are investigated. We apply star models based on phenomenological equations of state (EOS) from nuclear reactions including a phase transition between the hadronic phase and the quark gluon plasma. For specific equations of state hybrid stars might exist. While the nuclear part of the EOS has only a minor influence on the properties of hybrid stars, the EOS for the quark gluon phase has a crucial impact on the existence of such objects.

The equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter, i.e., the thermodynamic relationship between the binding energy per nucleon, temperature, density, as well as the isospin asymmetry, has been a hot topic in nuclear physics and astrophysics for a long time. The knowledge of the nuclear EOS is essential for studying the properties of nuclei, the structure of neutron stars, the dynamics of heavy ion collision (HIC), as well as neutron star mergers. HIC offers a unique way to create nuclear matter with high density and isospin asymmetry in terrestrial laboratory, but the formed dense nuclear matter exists only for a very short period, one cannot measure the nuclear EOS directly in experiments. Practically, transport models which often incorporate phenomenological potentials as an input are utilized to deduce the EOS from the comparison with the observables measured in laboratory. The ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model has been widely employed for investigating HIC from the Fermi energy (40 MeV per nucleon) up to the CERN Large Hadron Collider energies (TeV). With further improvement in the nuclear mean-field potential term, the collision term, and the cluster recognition term of the UrQMD model, the newly measured collective flow and nuclear stopping data of light charged particles by the FOPI Collaboration can be reproduced. In this article we highlight our recent results on the studies of the nuclear EOS and the nuclear symmetry energy with the UrQMD model. New opportunities and challenges in the extraction of the nuclear EOS from transport models and HIC experiments are discussed.

The eigen frequencies of radial pulsations of neutron stars are calculated in a strong magnetic field. At low densities we use the magnetic BPS equation of state (EOS) similar to that obtained by Lai and Shapiro while at high densities the EOS obtained from the relativistic nuclear mean field theory is taken and extended to include strong magnetic field. It is found that magnetized neutron stars support higher maximum mass whereas the effect of magnetic field on radial stability for observed neutron star masses is minimal.

Compact stars such as neutron stars (NS) can have either hadronic or exotic states like strange quark or colour superconducting matter. Stars can also have a quark core surrounded by hadronic matter, known as hybrid stars (HS). The HS is likely to have a mixed phase in between the hadron and the quark phases. Observational results suggest huge surface magnetic field in certain NS. Therefore, we study here the effect of strong magnetic field on the respective equation of states (EOS) of matter under extreme conditions. We further study the hadron–quark phase transition in the interiors of NS giving rise to HS in the presence of strong magnetic field. The hadronic matter EOS is described based on RMF theory and we include the effects of strong magnetic fields leading to Landau quantization of the charged particles. For quark phase, we use the simple Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) bag model, assuming density-dependent bag pressure and magnetic field. The magnetic field strength increases from the surface to the centre of the star. We construct the intermediate mixed phase using Glendenning conjecture. The magnetic field softens the EOS of both the matter phases. We finally study, the mass–radius relationship for such types of mixed HS, calculating their maximum mass, and compare them with the recent observations of pulsar PSR J1614-2230, which is about 2 solarmass.

The matter state inside neutron stars (NSs) is an exciting problem in nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics. The equation of state (EOS) of NSs plays a crucial role in the present multimessenger astronomy, especially after the event of GW170817. Thanks to accruing studies with advanced telescopes and radioactive beam facilities, the unknown EOS of supranuclear matter could soon be understood. We review the current status of the EOS for pulsar-like compact objects, that have been studied with both microscopic many-body approaches and phenomenological models. The appearance of strange baryonic matter and strange quark matter are also discussed. We compare the theoretical predictions with different data coming from both nuclear physics experiments and astrophysical observations. Despite great progresses obtained in dense nuclear matter properties, there are various challenges ahead, such as the model dependence of the constraints extracted from either experimental or observational data, the lack of a consistent and rigorous many-body treatment of all parts of the star, the dependence of many observables on the turbulent dynamics of relevant hot dense system. As LIGO is about to run again and discover more NS merger events, multimessenger observations are expected to finally unravel the mystery of NS structure.

We review the calculation of the equation of state of pure neutron matter using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. QMC algorithms permit the study of many-body nuclear systems using realistic two- and three-body forces in a non-perturbative framework. We present the results for the equation of state of neutron matter, and focus on the role of three-neutron forces at supranuclear density. We discuss the correlation between the symmetry energy, the neutron star radius and the symmetry energy. We also combine QMC and theoretical models of the three-nucleon interactions, and recent neutron star observations to constrain the value of the symmetry energy and its density dependence.
