We show that for a d-dimensional model in which a quench with a rate tau(-1) takes the system across a (d-m)-dimensional critical surface, the defect density scales as n approximately 1/tau(mnu/(znu+1)), where nu and z are the correlation length and dynamical critical exponents characterizing the critical surface. We explicitly demonstrate that the Kitaev model provides an example of such a scaling with d = 2 and m = nu = z = 1. We also provide the first example of an exact calculation of some multispin correlation functions for a two-dimensional model that can be used to determine the correlation between the defects. We suggest possible experiments to test our theory.  相似文献

The effect of shear on the ordering kinetics of a conserved order-parameter system with O(n) symmetry and order-parameter-dependent mobility Gamma(straight phi-->) approximately (1-straight phi-->(2)/n)(alpha) is studied analytically within the large-n limit. In the late stage, the structure factor becomes anisotropic and exhibits multiscaling behavior with characteristic length scales (t(2alpha+5)/ln t)(1/2(alpha+2)) in the flow direction and (t/ln t)(1/2(alpha+2)) in directions perpendicular to the flow. As in the alpha=0 case, the structure factor in the shear-flow plane has two parallel ridges.  相似文献

A model for thermally activated dynamics in disordered systems shows that the linear and nonlinear susceptibility follows a generic exponential form with a "critical rounding," chi(1) proportional to chi(3) proportional to [T ln(t/tau(0)')/K](gamma/b phi) exp - [Tt(g)(phi b)ln(t/tau(0)'/K)](nu/b) (T=temperature, t=time, K=barrier constant, t(g) = 1 - T(SG)/T, and T(SG) = transition temperature; gamma>0 for chi(3) and <0 for chi(1)). This model, also valid in the presence of resonant tunneling states at energies K(0) < K [provided that K is replaced by K(0)+2T ln (1/Gamma(0)), where Gamma(0)(2) proportional, variant tunnel splitting of a spin S=1], is potentially applicable to a wide variety of systems opening the way for the study of thermally activated quantum phase transitions. The famous spin-glass system LiHo(x)Y(1-x) seems to follow this model.  相似文献

We study the autocorrelation function of a conserved spin system following a quench at the critical temperature. Defining the correlation length L(t) approximately t(1/z), we find that for times t' and t satisfying L(t')infinity limit, we show that lambda(')(c)=d+2 and phi=z/2. We give a heuristic argument suggesting that this result is, in fact, valid for any dimension d and spin vector dimension n. We present numerical simulations for the conserved Ising model in d=1 and d=2, which are fully consistent with the present theory.  相似文献

We consider the shadow system of the Gierer-Meinhardt system in a smooth bounded domain Omega subset R(N),A(t)=epsilon(2)DeltaA-A+A(p)/xi(q),x is element of Omega, t>0, tau/Omega/xi(t)=-/Omega/xi+1/xi(s) integral(Omega)A(r)dx, t>0 with the Robin boundary condition epsilon partial differentialA/partial differentialnu+a(A)A=0, x is element of partial differentialOmega, where a(A)>0, the reaction rates (p,q,r,s) satisfy 10, r>0, s>or=0, 1or=0. We rigorously prove the following results on the stability of one-spike solutions: (i) If r=2 and 11 and tau sufficiently small the interior spike is stable. (ii) For N=1 if r=2 and 11 such that for a is element of (a(0),1) and mu=2q/(s+1)(p-1) is element of (1,mu(0)) the near-boundary spike solution is unstable. This instability is not present for the Neumann boundary condition but only arises for the Robin boundary condition. Furthermore, we show that the corresponding eigenvalue is of order O(1) as epsilon-->0.  相似文献

A model of random walks on a deformable medium is proposed in 2+1 dimensions. The behavior of the walk is characterized by the stability parameter beta and the stiffness exponent alpha. The average square end-to-end distance l approximately equals (2nu) and the average number of visited sites approximately equals (k) are calculated. As beta increases, for each alpha there exists a critical transition point beta(c) from purely random walks ( nu = 1/2 and k approximate to 1) to compact growth ( nu = 1/3 and k = 2/3). The relationship between beta(c) and alpha can be expressed as beta(c) = e(alpha). The landscape generated by a walk is also investigated by means of the visit-number distribution N(n)(beta). There exists a scaling relationship of the form N(n)(beta)approximately n(-2)f(n/beta(z)).  相似文献

At a generic quantum critical point, the thermal expansion alpha is more singular than the specific heat c(p). Consequently, the "Grüneisen ratio," Gamma=alpha/c(p), diverges. When scaling applies, Gamma approximately T(-1/(nu z)) at the critical pressure p=p(c), providing a means to measure the scaling dimension of the most relevant operator that pressure couples to; in the alternative limit T-->0 and p not equal p(c), Gamma approximately 1/(p-p(c)) with a prefactor that is, up to the molar volume, a simple universal combination of critical exponents. For a magnetic-field driven transition, similar relations hold for the magnetocaloric effect (1/T) partial differential T/ partial differential H|(S). Finally, we determine the corrections to scaling in a class of metallic quantum critical points.  相似文献

The exact joint multifractal distribution for the scaling and winding of the electrostatic potential lines near any conformally invariant scaling curve is derived in two dimensions. Its spectrum f(alpha, lambda) gives the Hausdorff dimension of the points where the potential scales with distance r as H approximately r(alpha) while the curve logarithmically spirals with a rotation angle phi=lambdalnr. It obeys the scaling law f(alpha,lambda)=(1+lambda(2))f(alpha)-blambda(2) with alpha=alpha/(1+lambda(2)) and b=(25-c)/12, and where f(alpha) identical with f(alpha,0) is the pure harmonic measure spectrum, and c the conformal central charge. The results apply to O(N) and Potts models, as well as to stochastic L?wner evolution.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of conductivity sigma(T) of a two-dimensional electron system in silicon has been studied in parallel magnetic fields B. At B = 0, the system displays a metal-insulator transition at a critical electron density n(c)(0), and dsigma/dT>0 in the metallic phase. At low fields ( B < or approximately equal to 2 T), n(c) increases as n(c)(B)-n(c)(0) proportional, variant Bbeta ( beta approximately 1), and the zero-temperature conductivity scales as sigma(n(s),B,T = 0)/sigma(n(s),0,0) = f(B(beta)/delta(n)), where delta(n) = [n(s)-n(c)(0)]/n(c)(0) and n(s) is electron density, as expected for a quantum phase transition. The metallic phase persists in fields of up to 18 T, consistent with the saturation of n(c) at high fields.  相似文献

Finding the impedance of the organ of Corti   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Measurements of the nonlinear response of the basilar membrane to a pure tone are shown to have a simple form for moderate membrane velocities: V(x,f;Vu)/Vu approximately [V(x,f)/Vu]v(x,f), f less than or equal to fc(x), where the response V is the velocity of the membrane at measurement position x, Vu is the umbo velocity, f is the frequency of the stimulus, and fc(x) is the local characteristic frequency. The frequency dependence of the functions v(x,f) and V(x,f) is determined from the data, and v(x,f) and ln V(x,f) are shown to be analytic functions in the lower half of the complex frequency plane, with Re [v(x,f)] a monotonically increasing function of f at fixed x. The linear limit of basilar membrane motion is characterized by a transfer function T(x,f) = (V/V1)v/(1-v), estimated by extrapolating V(x,f;Vu)/Vu to a small membrane velocity V1.T(x,f) and ln T(x,f) are shown to be analytic functions in the lower half of the complex frequency plane. The inverse of the amplitude of the transfer function, which has both a deep dip at f approximately fc(x) and a broad shoulder at lower frequencies, bears a striking resemblance to the neural threshold tuning curve. The functional form of T(x,f) is used to deduce the equation governing the motion of a section of the organ of Corti. Each section acts like a negatively damped harmonic oscillator stabilized at time t by a feedback force proportional to the velocity at the previous time t-tau. The time delay tau is proportional to the oscillator period [tau approximately 1.75/fc(x)]. Like a laser, the organ of Corti pumps energy into harmonic traveling waves. Unlike the laser, the direction of energy flow abruptly reverses as the traveling wave approaches the point of maximum membrane velocity [fc(x) approximately f]. All accumulated wave energy is then pumped back into a small section of the organ of Corti where transduction presumably occurs. Outer hair cells are conjectured to be active elements contributing to the negative damping and feedback of the cochlear amplifier.  相似文献

We investigate a class of reaction processes in which particles move ballistically and react upon colliding. We show that correlations between velocities of colliding particles play a crucial role in the long time behavior. In the reaction-controlled limit when particles undergo mostly elastic collisions and therefore are always near equilibrium, the correlations are accounted analytically. For ballistic aggregation, for instance, the density decays as n approximately t(-xi) with xi=2d/(d+3) in the reaction-controlled limit in d dimensions, in contrast with the well-known mean-field prediction xi=2d/(d+2).  相似文献

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the relaxation and short-time diffusion of polymer chains in two-dimensional periodic arrays of obstacles with random point defects. The displacement of the center of mass follows the anomalous scaling law r(c.m.)(t)(2)=4D(*)t(beta), with beta<1, for times t相似文献

We study the distributions of the resonance widths P(gamma) and of delay times P(tau) in one-dimensional quasiperiodic tight-binding systems at critical conditions with one open channel. Both quantities are found to decay algebraically as gamma(-alpha) and tau(-gamma) on small and large scales, respectively. The exponents alpha and gamma are related to the fractal dimension D(E)(0) of the spectrum of the closed system as alpha = 1+D(E)(0) and gamma = 2-D(E)(0). Our results are verified for the Harper model at the metal-insulator transition and for Fibonacci lattices.  相似文献

When nonzero, the ζ function is intimately connected with numerical information processing. Two other functions play a key role, namely, η(s)=∑n≥1(-1)n+1/ns and λ(s)=∑(n≥0)1/(2n+1)s. The paper opens on a survey of some of the seminal work of Euler [Me?moires Acad. Sci., Berlin 1768, 83 (1749)] and of the amazing theorem by Voronin [Math. USSR, Izv. 9, 443 (1975)] Then, as a follow-up of Chatelin [Qualitative Computing. A Computational Journey into Nonlinearity (World Scientific, Singapore, in press)], we present a fresh look at the triple (η,ζ,λ) which suggests an elementary analysis based on the distances of the three complex numbers z, z/2, and 2/z to 0 and 1. This metric approach is used to contextualize any nonlinear computation when it is observed at a point describing a complex plane. The results applied to ζ, η, and λ shed a new epistemological light about the critical line. The suggested interpretation related to ζ carries computational significance.  相似文献

We fitted C(k,tau, epsilon) proportional to exp([-sigma(k,epsilon)tau] to time-correlation functions C(k,tau, epsilon) of structure factors S(k,t,epsilon) of shadowgraph images of fluctuations below a supercritical bifurcation at V(0)=V(c) to electroconvection of a planar nematic liquid crystal in the presence of a voltage V=sqrt[2]V(0)cos((2pift) [k=(p,q) is the wave vector and epsilon identical with V(2)(0)/V(2)(c)-1]. There were stationary oblique (normal) rolls at small (large) f. Fits of a modified Swift-Hohenberg form to sigma(k,epsilon) gave f-dependent critical behavior for the minimum decay rates sigma(0)(epsilon) and the correlation lengths xi(p,q)(epsilon).  相似文献

We study the current relaxation of a wave packet in a nonlinear random sample coupled to the continuum and show that the survival probability decays as P(t) approximately 1/t(alpha). For intermediate times tt(*) and chi>chi(cr) we find a universal decay with alpha=2/3 which is a signature of the nonlinearity-induced delocalization. Experimental evidence should be observable in coupled nonlinear optical waveguides.  相似文献

The nature of quantum criticality in CeCoIn5 is studied by low-temperature thermal expansion alpha(T). At the field-induced quantum critical point at H = 5 T a crossover scale T* approximately 0.3 K is observed, separating alpha(T)/T proportional, variant T(-1) from a weaker T(-1/2) divergence. We ascribe this change to a crossover in the dimensionality of the critical fluctuations which may be coupled to a change from unconventional to conventional quantum criticality. Disorder, whose effect on quantum criticality is studied in CeCoIn(5-x)Sn(x) (0 < or = x < or = 0.18), shifts T* towards higher temperatures.  相似文献

With a high-performance Monte Carlo algorithm we study the interaction-induced shift of the critical point in weakly interacting three-dimensional /psi/(4) theory (which includes quantum Bose gas). In terms of critical density, n(c), mass, m, interaction, U, and temperature, T, this shift is universal: Deltan(c)(T) = -Cm(3)T(2)U, the constant C found to be equal to 0.0140+/-0.0005. For quantum Bose gas with the scattering length a this implies DeltaT(c)/T(c) = C(0)an(1/3), with C(0) = 1.29+/-0.05.  相似文献

Nutation echoes are generated by radiofrequency (RF) pulses with an inhomogeneous amplitude, B(1) = B(1)(r), in inhomogeneous magnetic fields, B(0) = B(0)(r). The two gradients of strengths G(1) and G(0), respectively, must be aligned in parallel for a maximum echo signal. After two RF pulses, two echoes appear at times tau(a) = 2 tau(1) + tau(2) + (G(1)/G(0))tau(1) and tau(b) = 2 tau(1) + tau(2) + 2(G(1)/G(0))tau(1), where tau(1) is the RF pulse duration and tau(2) the interpulse interval. It is shown that these echoes can favorably be employed for the determination of self-diffusion coefficients even in the poor experimental situation one often faces in low-resolution or low-field NMR. The signal intensity is comparable to that of ordinary Hahn echoes. Diffusion coefficients and spin-lattice relaxation times can be evaluated from the same experimental data set if both nutation echoes are recorded. Test experiments are in good agreement with literature data. Applications of the technique to "inside out" NMR, well logging NMR, surface coil NMR, toroid cavity NMR, etc., are suggested.  相似文献

We developed the foam drainage rheology technique in order to perform rheological measurements of aqueous foams at a set liquid fraction epsilon and fixed bubble radius R without the usual difficulties associated with fluid drainage and bubble coarsening. The shear stress exhibits a power-law dependence on strain-rate, tau approximately gamma[over]n where n approximately 0.2. The stress exhibits an inverse dependence on liquid content, tau approximately (1+h'epsilon)(-1), where h'=theta(10) exhibits a diminishing logarithmic trend with gamma[over]. We propose a model based upon film shearing as the dominant source of viscous dissipation.  相似文献
